    I'd hope to get a video out every 2 weeks - alternating weeks with the podcast. I know the video is only 10 minutes - but that took me about 2 days to make, so please be patient folks!

    I don't fill all the pre calc values in on my hand written sheets, it just tends to make it look too hectic - I don't have Paul's neat handwriting so the Quick Reference chart gets regular access.
    However if anyone has the same issues I recommend using the digital precalc sheets from the Chaosium website, as all the scores get filled in very neatly and its all worked out for you.
    Very clear explanations in this video, I look forward to the whole series. Thanks for posting!

    As a new player, it´s very helpful to see how easy it is to transfer the rules to a character sheet. Your voice and explanations are quite pleasant! Even for me as a non native speaker it was easy to follow your tips and use them with my german rulebook and character sheet.

    I would like to play a Black investigator who's experiencing the 1890s or 1920s in motion. Me being black myself, I know for a fact that it would bring conflict, and that's perfectly fine...I want to know and even experience that sort of tragic nature. I hardly see anyone making African American/Black people as Characters. Maybe as NPCs, but I know for a fact that systemic racuism and paranoia are big factors in history, and its even more so when you see Horror related material.

    Okay, I just bought this game and am used to D&D/D20 rules. This is all new for me. This is the first video I have watched and it was really helpful. I plan to watch all of them to best learn how to set up a game. I do have a few questions for now though, do Investigators gain levels? And, are there any enchanted weapons, or the possibility of enchanting weapons or items? Thanks!

    • @thegoodfriendsofJE
      @thegoodfriendsofJE  6 років тому +1

      No levels, but you can gain skill points - see Investigator Development Phase. There are enchanted weapons, such as knives, but these tend to aid on in casting spells rather than be magic weapons as one would find in D&D. There are some mythos weapons, such as a lightening gun, but they can be dangerous to the unskilled human user. Hope that helps!

    I noticed you spread your allotted points across multiple skills vs putting a lot of points into one particular skill. I realize there's not a right or wrong way to do this, but can you comment if you personally prefer one over the other?
    What's that saying, "Jack of all trades, master of none." :)
    Great video as always. Thanks.

    • @thegoodfriendsofJE
      @thegoodfriendsofJE  8 років тому +7

      I tend to go for a spread of skills, but that's just personal preference. I prefer a more rounded character over min/maxing. However, if there is one skill that defines the character I'd put it really high. So if I was making a sharp-shooter, I'd max out their rifle skill. What approach do others take?

    I want to run a game, and was curious what you would recommend getting, the Keeper's handbook or the Investigator's? I can only get one as of now, and don't know if it is like D&D where you can just get the Player's and not essentially need the DM's? Or would the Quick Start Guide be better?

    • @thegoodfriendsofJE
      @thegoodfriendsofJE  7 років тому

      You can begin with just the free Quick-Start. If you want to buy just one book, get the Keeper Rulebook. It's not like D&D: the Investigator Handbook is a supporting book not the core rules. Hope it works well for you.

    The way to break the game is by creating a grad student character. Such a character is invincible since you can't kill that which has no life :)

    Can you have a character in mind and then roll the stars putting them where it would make the most sense? I mean, the ones that use the same dice anyway?

      So long as your group agree on the method, then I think do whatever you wish.

    Hello! I have a question, what do I need (as books) to make stories in different times and/or ages?

    • @thegoodfriendsofJE
      @thegoodfriendsofJE  7 років тому +2

      If you know about the era then you can probably get away with the core rulebook and your imagination. Beyond that, there is a slim volume called Cthulhu through the Ages which covers a range of periods. Then there are era-specific books such as Dark Ages, Roman and 1890s (Gaslight). Take a look on Chaosium.com

    What do the +1 and -1 next to the Move Rate block mean?

    • @thegoodfriendsofJE
      @thegoodfriendsofJE  6 років тому

      It was something that got added in to allow players to record a change in movement rate for something in their character background, such as an old injury (causing a lowering of movement rate by one). Can't think of an example of an example of why it would be increased right now.

    Do you find no one will make a 40+ year old character any more as the skills get reduced? Another thing, it's hard enough to roll success. How often are the difficult 1/5 and 1/2 rolls made? This makes it a little more complicated.

    • @thegoodfriendsofJE
      @thegoodfriendsofJE  7 років тому

      People do still create older PCs, but yes some characteristics do get reduced, but then EDU may rise. The principle has always been a part of the game, it's not new, just a little revised. Getting older isn't what it used to be!
      On skill rolls, the regular difficulty level, rolling under your full skill value, is intended to be far and away the most common. Hard and Extreme should be uncommon and rare - as you say, it's often difficult enough just passing a regular skill roll. Agreed it does mean things are not quite as simple as before. The numbers are there on the sheet, hopefully with a little experience both Keeper and players get used to it and the game flows.

    Isn't there a version without the need of dice? I really detest roll playing systems wich rely on luck for charakter creation. If You want to create a specific kind of charakter, you have to make like 700 Investigators and there is no possibillity for the GM to verify if a charakter is created by cheating, then by forcing the players to be utterly unprepared.

    Right away I notice how generating abilities seems really cumbersome; must be rolled in order & not assigned. This seems odd. Why wouldnt they work out a way to make it so you can assign numbers to stats for the type of profession you would LIKE to play. It makes sense that a athlete would have higher DEX. Just 3D6 x5 for everything is better & then assign the numbers.
    I wonder what the reasoning is for such a convoluted way of generating stats?

      True, but the new edition adds the 'push mechanic' and luck spends, presenting the player with options to succeed if they wish to (a) take a risk, or (b) use up a limited resource. But yeah, failure is an option too. If you're not familiar with pushed rolls, they are explained in the third video in this series: ua-cam.com/video/Jg-P3u9_KCY/v-deo.html
