    Wow, great video! I know it's an old one but I'm behind the times because I'm just now looking at getting a CTX 3030 and indeed it comes with the 17-in coil and I'm buying the 6-in in addition to that. I sure appreciate you guys' videos and I love how you guys can Goof when there's time to goof and be serious when it's time to be serious. Very entertaining video. And very informative. You guys keep it up and I'll keep watching.

    Thanks for the video. I've been using the CTX as much as possible for over a year now on land, beach and in the water. I still don't know the maximum depth of the 17 inch coil, but I did hit an 1841 largie (my first) at 18 inches. At the beach I recently found a very old 1 gram 10k ring at 8 inches that everyone else missed, so no doubt about getting tiny targets at depth.
    Couple suggestions on the settings. No need to ground balance the machine in most cases, just keep it in auto mode. Sensitivity works best in auto mode. Depending on conditions I usually set it at plus 2 or plus 3. In high iron I may drop it to minus 3. Manual sensitivity sets all frequencies to the same level and defeats the efficiency of using FBS. Don't use the saltwater setting unless you have no other choice as it will filter out small low tone signals. I missed a gold ring that way. Lastly, use the deep setting for best audio on those faint signals. Hope this helps! GL&HH

    Brilliant test. My Son has just bought the 17 inch. We have a site where we found a Bronze age Hoard. In aprox 4 acres of pasture. We have hammered it with the ctx with the stock. And my Etrac with a 14 inch detech coil. Last time we did it with poles 5 hours 2 pieces of junk only. We are going this weekend with the 17 inch. And I have a new 13 inch ultimate coil on the Etrac. Your video gives us hope that the 17 will punch Deeper. See if we can find any more Axeheads. All the best Dave

      +david hopper Oh man David! That sounds like an excellent site for it. It gets a little heavy after a bit. I shortend the shaft. It helped. Best of luck to you guys!

    Been hunting with the 11 and 17 for about 3 seasons now. I like to go back through a site with the 17 after getting skunked a time or two with the 11. Pinpointing with the 17 is tough for me sometimes it seems like it under the M on the coil and other times it seems like it should be just south of the shaft. I wouldn't be surprised if it has to do with the shape of the signal and depth. The 11 I am almost dead on with pinpoint if target isnt on edge. Nice review and happy hunting!

      Yes that 17" gets heavy quick but the depth is awesome. All the best!

    Great demonstration, Kurt. I like how you detected the openholes prior to the plants to show people this was an honest demonstration. I love my big coil, but only use it in the places we've hunted to death and cleared most of the targets. In trashy or high EMI areas, it's tough to use without some frustration.

    • @thehooverboys
      @thehooverboys  9 років тому

      +alwaysseekingsilver Yes. That's the prefect reason to use the larger coils. This site is impossible with stock coils. It tough to get signals here at all anymore

    Great job Kurt. I've used that fish'in line trick before on the Etrac so it was cool to see you suggesting the same thing. If the shaft was a little larger diameter or the knurled nut slightly smaller, the coil cables wouldn't be so hard to shove through.

    Good review Kurt. I had the 17 inch coil for about a year but found no real advantage over the stock coil. It ended up on eBay. For me, it did not consistently produce deep diggable signals and most of the time targets were 2 to 3 inches less than stated on the machine. It's a very common problem with the 17 inch coil. For us in the old home sites, it's hard to get a good signal under that coil without a few nails due to its ridiculous size.

    • @thehooverboys
      @thehooverboys  9 років тому

      +Hooked on History Thank you! Yeah around home sites the stock is the way to go. I'm only going to use this at sites we've already pounded or open fields. I wish they made a 12 or 13" coil for it. A NEL Tornado would be a killer coil for the CTX. NEL doesn't make them yet. The 17 is a monster. Best of luck to you two

    Whoa! 42 degrees,, stiff wind,,, I thought changing the AT Pro connections were not so easy,,, fingers were not functioning here in "Cow Hampshire". I know the minelab is a great machine, but that seems less than ideal swapping coils. Please keep the reviews coming, I want a second machine(love my AT, (with NEL)), and the reviews really help. I knew this video was coming and I sure was surprised in the review. I've seen other videos where the CTX 17 inch coil made no difference in depth... MUCH TO MY SURPRISE and other detectorists have said that it's depth is off as much as two inches. . i.e. if it reads a target is at 10 inches the target is really at 8 inches. However, I do not own the 17 inch coil but know others that have had such an experience. I've been tempted to purchase the 17 inch coil and your video certainly does make a strong case for one to take the plunge. Keep digging Kurt. Good luck and Happy Hunting.😆

      +Jps3bs Thanks Johnny. I am 100% super impressed with the coil so far. I can't wait to go back to that site and throw some time at it. I know I will be digging some great coins and relics out of there once again. That Happy Hunting Ground is no different. I know coins run deep there. It's a bit heavy but I shortened my shaft to take off some of the weight. Best of luck to you

  • @GaryGraham66
    @GaryGraham66 7 років тому

    Nice review, BUT one point is to not use ground balance just use the noise cancel.
    11" coil will hit every target at 11" BUT and its a big one anything below 11" will be slightly fainter (even with volume gain at max) the 17" will get targets at 13" deep BUT give you an extra 6" coverage per swing.
    width of coil = depth. length of coil = coverage (ie. nose to tail).

    I guess my soil is really harsh. I buried a clad quarter at 7" and it is all the 17" coil will do. I first buried it at 10" and got nothing. I tried all the different settings but to no avail. I tried open screen, different tones, and every configuration. I dug down and buried it in the side wall as well. I moved over and buried it at 8" and got nothing. I can hit it at 7" but it isn't real solid. Out in the wild, I have pulled coins 7-8" deep. The CTX is really a coinshooter's machine. It is stable and decisive. I like the target trace and keep it on at all time. It helps to understand what is in the ground better. I also tried my safari to check against the CTX. The safari will hit the quarter at 6" but not very well.

    • @thehooverboys
      @thehooverboys  9 років тому

      +Pull tab Patriot When the screen has a pattern on it its blocking out the shaded areas. That's your discrimination. The more discrimination the less depth you achieve. That's why on a flaky signal you can open up the screen and get more information/depth, hear if iron is close and hopefully have a better signal. It's an awesome machine. Thank you Robert!

  • @sobeit2842

    aluminium? You been watching too many English videos. lol. Btw, this isn't really a comparison of the two coils. I'm not mad I watched the video, I liked it, but the title is misleading. I dunno...minelab says the dd design results in coils of different sizes getting the same depth, only the footprint changes. I'm constantly making finds in hunted out areas, and I mean areas I hunted out myself, pounded to death myself, and yet out comes another target I shouldn't have missed earlier. It's uncanny, but I do think switching coils up or down can make a difference, for whatever reason it may be.

    For the price it should have no problem with the stock coil. Very sad on Minelabs part. A 2,500 dollar detector which isn't wireless. I would expect it to pick it up with a UFO saucer on the end of it 😂😂😂I'll keep my whites V3i over this any day and pocket the thousand dollars left over. Just my 2 cents
