    There is nothing wrong with being a housewife or a househusband. It's all about the choices. As long as both men and women have the same choices available to them, then it's fine. When the choices are taken away from the men or the women because of their gender, now, that's a problem.

      You said any girlfriend would break up with her boyfriend in that situation and I agree with you. Honestly, I think any boyfriend would break up with his girlfriend as well if she loses her job and makes no attemp to find a new one.
      But if I were married and I had a child, and my husband were the one to stay at home with them for a few years while I work to support my family, I would be okay with that.

    • @AnzuBrief
      @AnzuBrief 6 років тому +12

      I don't agree with you. Sure, what you say sounds right - but it is not always like that. I have friends and family who are in equal relationships - and even one uncle and an aunt where he is the one taking care of their kid.
      My parents on the other hand, my dad is the main provider of the family and he is the boss at home - he also takes care of my mom even better than she does herself.
      I suposse different people workd differently. For me, if the relationship is not equal I rather be alone.
      But equality means equality. Same rights for everyone. It does not mean that when they get a divorce the wife gets a ton of money from the husband... wtf?

    My Sis was kind of a hard core feminist in high school and she went to Japan as a foreign exchange student during the early 2000's, before going she was big into studying Japanese culture and history, learned to speak it fluently etc ( I think she even considered becoming a translator or have some other role there after she finished school). When she came back to the U.S. she dropped all interest in Japan, she was horrified by the way she saw ladies being treated there ( especially the mother of her host family).
    I am sure her experience was an extreme one and I believe we should respect other cultures way of looking at things but I do hope the country will embrace seeing ladies as equals as it really should be

    It is true that there is an inclination for men and women to strive to certain positions based on their gender (hormones, physique etc.) But there's obviously something lacking, if the society doesn't give you an equal premise to pursue the position in spite of your gender. I think this is a hot topic and unfortunately in many Asian countries it's not even under discussion yet. Luckily, access to information is getting easier all the time and it has lifted people's awareness of this subject. It's great that you've brought this up!

    Personally, I think everyone (man or women) should live their life as they want to, not to conform to a standard etc.
    And IMO a lot of feminism campaigns are quite superficial, since they're just as much telling females they "should be" working despite having kids etc. rather than promoting a freedom of choice.
    As a guy, I also find it kinda confusing that we're getting blamed as a whole constantly by various campaigns, but I've never seen something like "you don't have to wear a ton of makeup or unhealthy shoes" because the ones making those campaigns know there would be some controversy.

      That's one of the biggest problems with the 3rd wave idiots. They don't let the other women choose for themselves. If a woman wants to stick to "traditional" role, she gets attacked by these idiots. So they're just trying to enforce their madness on others.
      Never have I seen a reasonable or sane proposition from these 3rd wave ones as of yet. Then again, it would be hard for them to come up with an issue that hasn't been fixed already in the west. Though I must admit they're pretty imaginative at coming up with nonsense issues.
      Wage gap=myth, rape culture=myth (in the west), 24/7 harassment=myth and so on.

      MadIIMike actually most of us do, its those ladder (don't know if I used that term right but I'm trying to say those people who you primarily see in media or the internet) that try and force woman to do that stuff. The majority of us actually prefer the idea of women having the CHOICE to be a worker/housewife/etc. etc. not the other way around. Also saying those couple of feminists you see every now and then represent all of us is idiotic, its like saying that since you see a bunch of gay guys on the internet act really feminine doesn't mean we all are its legit always the ladder (again don't know if I'm using that term correctly) that make or break a community of something, especially if its a stereotype as well which can most definitely brake a community

    • @themakeshifthero8653
      @themakeshifthero8653 6 років тому +8

      My issue with these "standards" is that there aren't really any...not in modern societies anyway. Like, you can say all your siblings and friends and parents told you that you should be a house wife. But really, is that a standard you have to conform to, or is that just people's opinion? It seems to me, a lot of the time, these people are complaining about other people's views, which you can't fix. Anyone can tell you anything, but you can do whatever you want. Everyone you know can tell you that as a woman you shouldn't start a business, you should start a family instead, but there's actually nothing stopping you from starting your business. These people just come off as mentally weak and whiny, and are in need of validation. Which is why they don't actually want freedom to do things, they want everyone's approval instead, which is why freedom isn't enough. We have to think like them too. A LOT of people told me I couldn't be anything, now I'm a computer network engineer. It doesn't matter your gender, you're always gonna get people telling you you can't do things, and frown at you for doing otherwise. That's LIFE. You should not spend time legislating against those people if systematically speaking, there's nothing standing in your way. If you complain all day about them rather than controlling your life, you probably deserve where you end up.

    • @mccauleyii6887
      @mccauleyii6887 6 років тому +3

      TheMakeshiftHero that's another part of it too. Some people lack the courage to go against their families wishes. For the longest time I thought I would have been rude or disrespectful to tell my family I wasn't a Christian so I forced my self to be one for the longest until it staters to mess with my life and my mental health. I'm not saying everyone out there is gonna feel like their family decides what they will be in their future but if their family gives off impressions or discomfort or "you should do this because that's what I expect from you" or their parents are verbally manipulative and force you into these situations without realizing it, it causes a sense of "my family "needs" me to do this so I have to". Again not everyone is like this or is in this situation but its very likely that at least 40-50% of people are. Some are lucky to have parents that actually support the idea of discovering themself but many quite a few don't

In our household it just so happens that, naturally and without pressure from media and family, I the husband make the money and my wife stays at home. It was a natural decision because my job just so happened to make more money, and my wife happens to really enjoy being at home with our kid, but it's funny how that conforms to the stereotype. I really feel the show would be much more interesting and actually have some more meaningful content if the interviews we're done with a much wider and range than just the 17 to 21 year old group.... very very few people in that age group have enough experience to have any real insight besides an incredibly superficial one or one they were fed by the media.

    I hope some day Japanese women feel encouraged enough to talk their hearts out and complain about abusive relationships, about sexual assault and about all the harmful behavior that men force into them. I feel like feminism isn't as powerful there because women may still be afraid of saying their opinion out loud. But modern feminism is a far cry from what it used to be. Feminists say it’s about equality but it’s more about male bashing. When women are treated equally they want special treatment for being women. And feminists want everyone to respect women’s rights but ignore men’s rights.

It also is interesting to me that they didn't know there are areas only men are allowed (although they looked very young so the areas I'm thinking of they shouldn't know about at that age anyway!)
    I feel like the feminist movement in Japan is only just beginning to bloom and young people are slowly starting to realise that society is very male dominated (such as men having higher wages and being able to secure higher up jobs etc)

      I'm never have been in Japan, but because of this kind of videos and the japanese industry of entretainment I'm be able to see how traditional gender rolles still in Japanese culture in a really deep way, maybe because Japan is so far from the Occidental side and its culture as well, which is more close to the ideologys like feminism since it's originate there. I just hope some day more and more japanese womens fight and believe in a change in order to get more equal life and both men and women can do wherever they want without any kind of opression like toxic masculinity (for example being harsh just because you are a man) or fear for being violented in any way just because you were born being a woman.

    I've taught many Japanese families English for a decade now and I can say that generally, majority of them have the wives stay at home with the kids and the men go to work. It's fine if that's what both parties want but some women want to work and are labelled "demon women/mum". After they have kids, many of them can only get part-time jobs and the kids tell their dads "see you tomorrow" at breakfast because they don't see their fathers until the next morning because he is working throughout the day until midnight and sometimes even beyond that. The fathers end up missing their family because they are working and the mothers have no choice but to take care of the kids.

    I'm rather off topic, sorry, but I have a question about the English subtitles where the word for railroad car is often rendered as "cart". In the US this is almost always spoken of as a "car" and AFAIK in the UK it's usually called a "carriage". I don't know what other English speaking countries use, but I don't think they use the word "cart" although I think all three words are closely related to each other and also to the word "carpenter" which means a maker of carts or wagons. I'm being a little long winded? Sorry, I'm wondering, if you know, what the native language of the person who writes the English subtitles is?TIA

    • @Mari-hb5do
      @Mari-hb5do 6 років тому +1

      NEO character designer I’m from Portugal. But, like I said: you need to do what you enjoy and not care about what others think of it. I used to be like that and people never got satisfied because I was a goody two-shoes who just wanted everyone to get along. I went through some bad ordeals who made me lose it almost completely and ever since I stopped caring about what others think of me, it’s like a weight has been lifted off of my shoulders. For example, my country is very religious (well, most of the older generation is) and believes that people only exist to marry and procreate. i really like kids for example but I don’t see myself having one as I have already quite the trouble paying for my own illnesses meds, and I don’t want to marry either since I’ve seen so many divorces and I don’t believe in religion anyways. That doesn’t mean however that I would mind having a significant other, quite in the contrary. And people mock me for it but it’s none of their business since it’s not their life but mine. Your own happiness is your own responsibility, so you must do what makes you feel happy even if others mock you for it. Those who do so are weak enough to not fight against the society’s norms and go after their dreams after all.
      Honestly, those women who are like that or as equally, men who despise that example are just the less smart majority. I don’t see anything wrong with that. It’s just not the majority of men who choose that but so what? If anything I rather admire someone who goes after their dreams even if others mock them than quit them due to others’ stares. But that is my point of view there. If I were to have someone like that as my partner it wouldn’t bother me one inch at all. What I don’t like is that kind of people who are like depending on the other too much or/ and getting in debt while not taking any responsibility for their actions. I have a friend whose father is like this and the mother recently divorced him since they have already a huge debt and are selling the house to pay some of it. He didn’t want to do anything and kept wasting money. Now, that is something to despise.

    When I first moved to Japan I thought I wanted to work full time forever, but now that I am married I think I would rather do baito and raise kids than keep working full time. Having both parents working full time while raising kids means the kids would miss out on a lot. I wasn't raised in a two-parent household, and I think not having a parent at home negatively affected my upbringing.
    In my marriage, I give my half of the money for the mortgage and utilities to my husband every month. So he manages the finances actually. I only keep what I need for my everyday needs, my student loans from America, and savings. I am also paying my own pension, insurance, etc. His name is the only name on our home, so maybe I am in a weak position, actually. I think he is being unfair but he won't budge. To be honest, if he would pay the mortgage and utilities himself (his salary is twice mine), I'd consider working just under the spouse deduction limit (recently raised to 1.5 million yen a year, which is almost 75% what I'm making now at full-time) and start having kids, but it seems he doesn't understand that. He wants kids even more than I do though. He makes no sense. lolol I'll keep working full time for now I guess. He keeps saying "...when your student loans are paid off". Hmm I could pay them off in 1/3 the time if he didn't take half of my paycheck! Does he want me to have my first child at 38? If that's the case, I'll skip kids. :P

    There really should be a part on where you ask a couple of guys about Feminism in a second part, but otherwise, there are some good takes on the matter. As of my stance on Feminism, it's going to ruffle feathers with no way around it however: In the case of my country (USA), it was far more about female superiority than equality and mainly about the vilification of the male gender. Alongside a lot more problems, Feminism is also a huge part of why a many homes and families turned out to be broken as well as a part of why the government for my country is heavily against men and boys. As of this post, things are at the point of severe damage with only a societal collapse to look forward to unless something gives. Once again, just my two cents.

    i dont speak japanese, so i can only go off the subtitles, but i would really like to know if you potentially used an incorrect term to refer to advantages women have (or maybe theres a mistake in the subs)?
    because their responses seem to be very literal, as if you asked "what are areas only women are allowed in", or "what can only women do", rather than for instances of advantages women have.
    not a criticism btw, i'm just curious, since many of the responses do sound like very odd choices to cite as advantages, while perfectly normal responses if you asked for places only women are allowed in.
    its just... those train cars and the women only onsen, i cant believe that someone (especially a woman) would cite those 2 things as advantages women have, considering why those areas exist in the first place.
    anyways, about the topic, i feel like most people would agree with the sentiment that men buying women stuff, is an advantage women have.
    im not so sure about that though.
    there are usually some expectations coupled with the stuff, and its sadly not that uncommon for men to react with anger if the expectations arent met.
    that doesnt sound like an advantage to me, at least not one for women.
    if the expectations werent there, sure, but they are, lets not pretend that men buy women stuff because they love buying women stuff so much, at least not in the context of dating.
    and with the expectations there, it feels like the girl gets the shorter stick in that interaction, the guy knows how much money he spends, while the girl can only guess what the expectations are or what the reaction will be if the expectations arent met.
    lmao, this one is 5 years old, why did you suggest it to me susan? suggest their new videos to people ;)

    I really don't know about the kindergarten thing. Maybe it's better that way. Many kids feel neglected because both their parents work. I think when a couple has children, they should be their top priority. Not the mother that wants to feel independent by working nor the father that maybe expects to be the leader of the family. I think it is necessary that one of the two parents need to be at home to take care of the children. Many say that the maternal love is better than the paternal. But I guess that depends.

      While you're making a good point, there's also situations such as the one I grew up in, where by parents had to work when my brother and I were little kids, because the household needed two salaries. :/ As a consequence, we grew up with a nurse, but it was better to spend some monthly money on it than having only one salary for the family. :/

    Japanese feminism seeks preferential treatment for women and cold treatment for men instead of equality between men and women. People help women, but men abandon them. The happiness of men and women is overwhelmingly higher for women. It's hell for men😅 people in the comments don't understand it lol

    Because of their so called *Technological advancements* or their *Peculiar* culture..
    The only thing they care about and think about is to find a *Native* guy to.....with him😉

    2:26 The flaw in her thinking is that patriarchy is not equality. If a man is willing to take care of the financial, emotional, and physical desires of his wife and his family, they should submit to him and obey him. The problem comes when a man takes advantage of his authority abusively or his wife doesn't trust in his ability to provide for her. Equality in a family is impossible because a husband will always be expected to physically protect his wife. The double-standard can't be avoided so equality in marriage is a feminist fiction.

    • @AnzuBrief
      @AnzuBrief 6 років тому +8

      Physically protect his wife from what? I'm not denying men are a lot stronger, but I'm 24 and I have never needed anyone to protect me... simply because the 21 century is pretty, pretty safe. And no, it is not equality if both the men and the women don't have equal choices. They don't have to do the same thing, obviously, but the same choices should be open for both of them. What and how they decide it's up to them.

    • @MiguelDLewis
      @MiguelDLewis 6 років тому +1

      Equality is a mathematical concept so we can put this in mathematical terms.
      Man ≠ Woman
      A ≠ B
      0 ≠ 1
      Apple ≠ Orange
      Black ≠ White
      In order for two things to be equal, they must be exactly the same. Ergo, equality can never exist amoung the sexes. I don't expect my wife to defend me physically or pay my bills or massage my feet. And she doesn't expect me to cook or clean or make a budget for our home. We know that we are not equal so we do what we are good at, not what makes us "equal".

    • @AnzuBrief
      @AnzuBrief 11 місяців тому

      @@MiguelDLewis that's a dull argument, since not all men are the same. In fact, I'd say every human being is different. But we all deserve the same freedom to decide what we want to do, regardless of gender, personality, nationality, etc

    Why would you want to work as a woman with a providing husband and kids to raise ?
    I believe this idea is artificially pushed on women. Work doesn't bring happiness, vocation does.
    When you don't have anything pushed on you as a woman, it is perfectly natural to feel raising the kids and taking care of the family as your vocation. You would be happier than ever.
    On your death bed you won't think about how much money you made or how many dresses you managed to buy. You are going to think about your family and how well of a job did you do to raise it!

      I personally think that working would make me happier than being a housewife. I like putting my talents to use and I would be disappointed in myself if I wasted them. I can do more than one thing. I can take care of my children when I have them and work. In fact that’s what most people do. If you go through life thinking that you can only have one thing or the other you will miss out on a lot. I buy things I have by myself and figure things out myself. Which makes me happy because I know that my work payed off. I may not be fully grown yet. But I understand the nature of what I want to do, what I want to see, and how I want to live. And I’m not going to be put under a label called “housewife”that is irrelevant to my future.

    • @AleksandarIvanov69
      @AleksandarIvanov69 6 років тому +2

      Let me make something clear - I'm not against women working :) If you don't want to have kids, then work your ass off, I'm all for it!
      HOWEVER!
      Of course women do it all the time, but how well really ? Research how your absence affects your child, I think you would be terrified.
      Now think about "What is work ?", baseline is "something you contribute to society, that also makes you money" and if the making money part is not your prerogative, rather contributing to society is no one is actually stopping you from doing it anyway, so working is not really the issue is it :)
      The core of the issue is doing what your kid needs, not what you want right ? So if your kid is going to benefit immensely more from you staying and home, taking care of it, what is so bad about being a stay-at-home mom ? Are you not having kids, because you want to raise them to the best of your ability ?
