      Don't forget this is titled Gallic Tribes... They ruled across northern Germany, Belgium, all of France, and even pushed as far south as Rome. (We are all family.) And this was prior to Rome pushing north to attempt to conquer in what is now Scotland and Ireland. :-) The Gallic tribes really gave back to the Romans as much as they dished out!

      @@TheMschick22 They didn't even touch northern Germany dude, the hell are you talkin about? The furthest north the Gallic tribes ever got on the mainland was the southern Netherlands. Unless you're talking about the Frankish empire but that was controlled by the Franks, a Germanic tribe.

      @@svefnhnuturthorgeirsson The DNA project proves it. They were literally right across from each other. A quick swim. The Galls were called that by Rome (after they conquered what we call France) the true name was Gaul and they were a "Gaelic tribe." Anglo-Saxon, Franks, East Saxon, Goths, etc, were ALL Germanic tribes. They (the Gauls) are who was across all of France. In the southern area of France near what is northern Italy, the best uprising against Rome happened - read about Vercingatorix. He made the mistake of warring with the Germanic tribes AND Rome. After Rome finally defeated them, they pushed further to conquer the Gauls. There was also conflict with the Germanic tribes. This resulted in the tribes pushing further north in England, Scotland, and encroaching the Picts which is why there were Anglo-Saxons in "AEngland," and Gaelic as well. Some findings even show that these tribes near the France-Italy border believed in a God with one eye, and even believed in a mystic tree or life or tree of knowledge. The question scientists are trying to answer is did these myths migrate north and inspire the Vikings, or the other way around? But the archeological finds and DNA don't lie about the locations.

    The problem with the Gauls was that they could never put aside their differences, same problem the Germanics had, they constantly war'd against eachother. Vercingetorix had some of the most battle-hardened, fiercest Gauls fighting under his lead 3 of which were the Belgae, the Helvetii and the Volcae, him uniting fellow Gauls into his army proved to be very successful. If the rest of the Gaulish tribes stopped bickering at eachother, followed Vercingetorix lead and rose together as 1 mighty Gaulish army its very possible Vercingetorix could've won against the Romans, it actually makes me sad. The French and the Belgians should know how brave, powerful and badass their ancestors were.

    If only they had waited, had resolved to out last Caesar instead of the eagerness to fight, for siege warfare, waiting on the enemy to starve, was not the Gallic way. Fighting was to be done honorably, for that is how you might enter eternity. But not when fighting the Romans. There is no honorable way to fight Romans.

      EtEL commonly known as Attila The Hun rejects your view on Roman army.

    • @cinaedmacseamas2978
      @cinaedmacseamas2978 2 роки тому

      @@hondacbrification Please elaborate. Of course one had to regard a Roman army seriously, but there was a universe difference between Gallic and Roman warfare, principally that a Roman army was a state sponsored, professional endeavor, with supply trains and a sophisticated command structure. A Gaul fought with a sense of honor quite differently from that of Rome. For instance, fighting had to be with swords and shields or spears, and archers were considered cowardly. Warfare meant someone was going to enter eternity, so the fighting had to be done in an honorable manner. The Romans, and Gaius Iulius especially, were not so constrained.

      @@cinaedmacseamas2978 Being a Hun-Han Gerian which is a GaL group like ManGaL from which MonGoL as word derives I find it important to see my ancestors views as well rather then blindly believing in Greeko-Roman narrative.
      Far as I understand GaL moved between PortuGaL,BenGaL and MonGolia who connected Iberian peninsula with CaucaSIAN Iberian Kingdom and Siberia which even do divided in different groups they where interconnected.
      While maybe the western GaL haven’t had a cavalry like eastern ones or Romans it was more due to dense forest which requires a different type of warfare .Where Roman mercenaries had succeeded in conquering and exterminating a huge Gælic population in the west they success was a result of western Gælic tribes to unite as one against Roman intruders and not because of some sort of Roman mercenaries somehow being superior in any way.
      Rome spread its influence via money giving people a opportunity to earn money by things with it that they fundamentally didn’t need which was the reason why Roman mercenaries where often Gælic as well which was another issue out of many and is pretty much why in Hungarian and other languages in what we today call central-eastern Europe Deutsch are called Német,Nemci…for Ne means No but Nem means Not meaning there was a general rejection of them as being a traitors to they own people that persist to this very day since while MonGol ManGaL like Hun-Han is some sort offensive word as Barbaric-VárErik in our land it was Roma that was the most insulting word that ever existed where so called Gypsies are not called Roma because they where Romans but a insult of they past betrayal and alliance with Romans.

      The earliest genetic match found which according to genetics a 100% match is in today BulGeria and it’s over 4000 years old which simply points out that Ger and not actually a Deutsch-Dutch identity but actually GaL,GeL,Gael,GauL …just as Sian-Scythian who had a different warfare then Romans and Greeks.

      @@hondacbrification I must apologize, but I don't understand how that applies to Romans and warfare, except to understand that the method of warfare was different. Over time, the Romans had adapted their method of fighting to better combat their dreaded menace in Gaul. The problem for the Gauls is that they did not counter the Roman changes with changes of their own. Head to head, shield against shield, Roman maniple formations were very difficult to beat, and a primary way to beat the Romans was by not allowing them to get into their standard, battle-ready formation, the maniple. Several ancient commanders figured this out independently: Viriatus, the Iberian-Celtic shepherd turned war-lord, successfully beat the Romans by luring them into an extended march through mountainous terrain and narrow passages and assaulted the Roman column along its length. This was done by Hannibal Barca at Lake Trasimene, and Hermanus, the German, Cherusci Roman officer who turned against Varus in the Teutoborg Forest. Each leader applying the same tactic in different times and circumstances.
      Vercingetorix beat Julius Caesar at Gergovia, then retreated to Alesia. Big mistake.

      Yeah, this song is great, thank you! And you´re right; most of the called "celtic music" is not how the music of the Iron Age Celts might have sounded, but tradicional music from the called "celtic nations" (Ireland, Scotland, Island of Man, Wales, Cornwall and Brittany, places where the celtic language was preserved), and the north of Spain. Nevertheless, these types of music, despite having features in common, are very different. So "celtic music" is more marketing (the word "Celtic" recalls green fields, faeries, beautiful things etc. for most of the people) than a proper label. Actually, I have lived in Ireland, and they use to avoid the term "celtic music" (but for touristic events), trad music is the more used. And apart, there exist celtic rock, metal, punk, hip hop, etc...

    The Celts,a people of hard work,peace and joy, who live happy lives,but are also courageous, fearless and no strangers to war. Who's bravery even put the Germans to shame. It's too bad that they are gone in Gaul for they have lost in the end,yet they still fought on even against great ods .And unlike the modern french who always surrender,the Gauls never gave up,for they would rather die slain in battle than loose the freedoms their forefathers fought for dearly. Glory to the dead!!!

    Both sides of my family were in the battle of Culloden on the Celtic side as there were Welsh and Irish combatants fighting with the Scots. My dads side laid low in the highlands while my mom's side went to Brittany, got involved with the thirty year's war and some are considered martyrs by the Catholic Church. My parents met in Texas, I'm mixed between Celtic, Norse, and Comanche ancestry. The farthest we can trace my family back on my mom's side is a relative of Brian Boru, while on my dad's side we go back to a soldier in William the Conqueror's army.
    Grew up hearing stories from my mom's side of our ancestry and the rare moments where various family members met or were saved by luck/the family guardian who seems to be Lady Artio. I grew up hearing of my Celtic ancestry so I see myself as a Celt with the adaptability of the Comanche, and Northern blood lust.

      @@erikbloodaxe9774 Perhaps the best Historical comparison to use as an indicator about how things would have worked out had The Gallic Tribes defeated Rome, would be the Germanic Tribes defeat of Rome in 9AD. The fate of Arminius, murdered a few years after the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest. The reason given is that the tribes didn't want a King. I believe the nature of Ancient European people was that they didn't want to be ruled by a King that lived far away, favouring a Chieftain, Clan Leaders.
      Their leaders suffered beside them, drank and feasted together, fought beside them, would die for their freedom. Quiet a contrast to who we chose as leaders today. No one can doubt that Rome provided one of History's greatest Leaders in Caesar, it is through his written word that we know of the ferocity, greatness of the Gallic Tribes and their selfless leader Vercingetorix. I often think about what could have been if things worked differently.

    Beautiful!! I love the Celts. I have a question.... Do you know if the different celtic tribes usd the same instruments? For exemple, did Gauls knew the Bodhran ?

    • @KeithOSullivanmusic
      @KeithOSullivanmusic  7 років тому +13

      The Bodhran is the Irish Frame Drum as you know, I'd imagine that different European Celtic Tribes had their own type of Frame Drums known by different names. As the Frame Drum is an Ancient Musical Instrument used by many different Cultures spread throughout the World, due to it's basic simple design. Frame Drums differ from region to region in size, material used, for example different animal skin used and wood used to make the frame. Giving it a different tone. I have seen some Medieval Frame Drums with small cymbals around the frame giving it an extra Tambourine sound quality. Which may have their origins in Middle Eastern and Persian Music.
      There is so much that still today remains unknown about the Ancient Celtic peoples of Europe, but they were a very creative and artistic people, and one can only assume that when it came to music that they would have been equally creative. For example The Carnyx, the Celtic War Horn is a work of art, such intricate design. Which they used as they went into battle to put the fear into their enemies. I can well imagine that they would also use drums for the same effect. Have a great weekend. Best wishes to you from Ireland.

      Thank you for your answer ! Indeed they were a creative people. I guess the importance of the bards in their society show your theory must be the right one.

    One þing I hate þe most is þe fact þat in modern times, we have completely lost þe spirituality and þe joy in simple þings, we are distracted so much by politics, forced morals and inner repression, such þat we forgot how it is like to be connected to one's ancestors, to have gods which reflect one's own nature properly, to have broþers who share þe same blood and feel each oþers sentiments, alike.
    It is difficult enough for us Þeedishfolk (🇩🇪) to reconnect wiþ our roots, despite us speaking þe evolved language of our forefaþers.
    I can't possibly imagine, how much of an identity crisis þe French went þrough, when gaulish variants of celtic languages were repressed þis early on by þe romans.

    where did you get a carnyx from?

    • @KeithOSullivanmusic
      @KeithOSullivanmusic  7 років тому +1

      Sorry it took me a while to respond, I've been busy. It was recorded in a studio, a few different carnyx replicas, created exactly like the original archaeological finds from different countries, and converted into a Virtual Instrument. Thanks for listening.

      if I wanted to use a carnyx, where would I get one?

    • @KeithOSullivanmusic
      @KeithOSullivanmusic  7 років тому +3

      The one I used, as I say was from a Virtual Instrument by Eduardo Tarilonte titled ' Era II ', available at Best Service in Germany. If you were seeking an actual replica, which would be a very cool thing to have, the only man I know who creates the carnyx today is a man called John Kenny. But, I'm not sure that he sells them. Check him out on UA-cam, and you'll learn more, and then if you google him you'll probably get his details. I'm sorry it took me a week to answer, but UA-cam doesn't seem to be notifying me to the comments. Best of luck in your quest Rory, if you track one down let me know.

    • @KeithOSullivanmusic
      @KeithOSullivanmusic  7 років тому +5

      I think that they were called the Belgae. Who were descended from Germanic tribes. The reason I think one can't be certain about all of the details is that most of the sources come from the Roman Empire. Check it out, the History of the European tribes is a fascinating subject, it really makes you think about your ancestors. Thanks for listening.

      Keith O Sullivan,as much as I enjoy reading about ancient europe and its peoples,I wonder how many perceived ideas about ancestry would be changed if 23 and ME was used.

      +Brian MacPherson. I think that you are correct in what you say. If we just use England as an example, there wouldn't be many who believe that they have say what would be described as I guess you'd say Celtic DNA, genetically referred to as the Oisin gene. But so many English males carry this gene, from the studies I've read. I think a genetic test would reveal much about who we are, and no doubt it would surprise many, and in truth disappoint many.
