  • The Walther PD380 is a 380 ACP handgun with a 9+1 Magazine capacity, Locked Breech Short Recoil Action for softer shooting and an Easy rack Slide. Based on the Walther PDP Slide Serrations and Grip Texture, this makes an excellent choice for 1st time shooters, small hands and weak hand strength. Thank you to Walther Arms for providing the PD380 for this review. ‪@Waltherarms‬

Look into Underwood, American Gunner, Lehigh and Civil Liberty Defense for great .380 ACP carry ammo. Ammo choice is EXTREMELY important for the .380 round, doubly so when you have a shorter barrel, although the Walther P380 is a bit longer than most .380s that I would consider carrying.

I've become somewhat enamored with the .380 round again. I actually swapped my Sig P365 9mm for the .380 version. I also purchased the Beretta 80X in .380 earlier this year. I like the looks of this new Walther - might have to check it out if they rent it at the gun club...

I swapped my original Sig P365 9mm for the 380 version as well. I'm perfectly happy with a 380 defensive round and while I have a Ruger LCP Max and Glock 42, I shoot my Sig P365-380 much better than those two. While this Walther is not a small and light as the Sig, I will have to try one out and see if I like it enough to add to my rotation.

My .380 Glock42 is my EDC and all I carry in it is the Extreme Defender.
I was going to carry some of their Penetrators in it but the G42 is finicky - LOVING the Defender, but FTF w/the Penetrator.

politely disagree ...Ruger really shit the bed with that gun...it's way too chunky, the grip is awkward as all hell; and worse with the extended mag , the trigger pull isn't bad but not good enough for a hammer fire design, and when dry firing, it sounds like the entire trigger system is made of cheap plastic

I LOVE MY PDP Compact. This looks like it. I don't think the optics cut really matters that much in a low profile deep cover gun. It just adds bulk and to me this kind of gum is more for the 10 yard gun. It looks like this is aimed at the deep carry space. I also love my P30sk and I get really great accuracy from it. I like hammer fired carry guns because they are less susceptible to limp wristing and you get 2nd strike. I know exactly what they were going for and I think they nailed it. This is more like the LC9S or the Shield EZ or the Bodyguard but smaller and more for sensitive shooters or
new shooters. It is designed to be low drag.
In my experience all Walthers are well thought out and high quality. I never experienced a Walther I didn't like and the PDP is outstanding.

@@Shadow__133 When putting in time at the range, I find it way more pleasant, fun even, to load a single stack mag vs a double stack (even with a maglula loader). When you consider that the average shooting is resolved between 2-4 rounds within 7 yards, having a 15-round capacity doesn't seem so important. If 10 rounds of .380 defensive ammo center of mass don't solve your problem, then you need to get the bigger gun from your truck.
But different strokes for different folks. Some people carry six-shot revolvers, and if that's what they're going to train with and be competent at, then more power to them.

Its hilarious how so many people have no idea who this firearm is for. It doesn't compete with firearms that are double the price or double the capacity. This is basic, reliable, and easy self protection. A store can put this firearm on display right next to some brightly colored talon grips and they won't be able to keep them in stock.

There really wasn't any options for Micro 9s at the time so I picked up this gun as soon as it hit the streets. It was soft shooting, light, and accurate, but it just wasn't completely reliable, even with ball ammo. As much as I wanted to like it, I sold it off and went back to my jframe until the Ruger SR9c and later SW Shield came out.

Cute firearm and well designed, however I think that most people, (women especially) will not like this pistol, even though it is light on recoil. Got her a Security 380, but the ergos on this PD look much nicer.

This is an interesting firearm for sure, I was on the Walther subreddit and many users there disliked it a lot and seemed to miss the point. They thought that if it wasn't what they expected it couldn't be for any other market.
I think these larger .380 ACP caliber handguns are great for all sorts of people who lack confidence, grip strength or even time to practice diligently to control for recoil. This is meant to compete with the Shield 380 EZ and Security 380.
Personally for my first handgun, if I could do it again something like this I would have gotten. Shame that Smith and Wesson didn't make their Shield Plus in .380 ACP but instead 30 SC.

It is meant to be a 380 Shield EZ and Security-380 competitor. The problem is that Walther's marketing team would rather make a James Bond short than accurately advertise what the gun is. This thing is most certainly not built to be a "covert carry" gun like they want to pretend it is.

My wife has a very peculiar problem with a gun being "right" for her. She has very small hands. As such, she needs a small gun to be able to hold it and to reach the trigger. HOWEVER, the sub-compact guns are too snappy for her to control. She typically limp wrists it and then gets a failure to feed, very regularly. If she were to use a larger gun it would not be as snappy and she wouldn't limp wrist it, but a gun larger than a sub-compact has a grip too big for her hands (Her longest finger is as long as my pinky) and she cannot reach the trigger. THIS gun may be the happy medium she needs.
