One thing I love about Dead Space 1 and 2 especially, is that as a new player, playing on harder difficulties will result in enemies getting up and close to you, so you will see the quick time attacks and often the unique deaths per enemy. Inspired clearly by RE4, but a great design choice nonetheless.
It is almost shocking how well this has held up; re-played it myself a few months back and it truly is one of the greatest games ever made. I get the argument that it took RE in a different direction, but just by itself, it’s just so amazingly well-made and so friggen fun EDIT: also, best inventory system of all time
The thing that made me so willing to accept this game (and give it a chance early on) was specifically because of the inventory system. With a bad inventory system this game might have gone the other way.
yeah even playing it again (after the 20th time) on PC before the big remake comes out. Second playthrough on professional now, will always stay in my personal fav top 10
Honestly, I'd argue that a game's impact on the rest of the franchise isn't relevant in a review of the game itself. That says more about the games following this than this game, imo.
EA: Dead Space!? How about more online only focused soulless corporate crap! At least Village is getting dlc unlike RE3 Remake. Although, we don't know when they'll release and how much they cost too.
Blame Kojima for making Konami almost go bankrupt during his 2 years as VP, greenlighting insane budgets for games that flopped (most of them, his own). Konami literally CANT make a AAA game.
I've played this game so many times... Watched so many reviews/retrospectives... And yet, when a creator I like posts a review about it? You bet your ass I'm going to join to reminisce. At the end of the day, probably my personal GOAT.
Ashley is the OG example when people talk about escort missions, but it's because the game was so important. Ashley is probably one of the best examples of how to do it right.
20:15 Judging from how they changed Carlos in 3make (Charming but slightly sleazy puerto rican who shamelessly hits on Jill the minute he meets her to simping nice guy who showers Jill with praise endlessly) I seriously doubt Luis's persona will make it into 4make unmolested.
I think I like the developer idea of put a challenge at the very beginning of a game and if you can pass it, you can beat the whole game. Bloodborne was my first experience with that idea fighting father Gascoigne. But other games do it too. Much better than spending 20 or so hours to hit a brick wall making you give up.
I originally played this on GameCube after purchasing a used game console from a local GameStop my last year in high school. As an N64 fan, I still have no idea why I waited so long to get in on GameCube (PS2 mainly), but GameCube had a treasure trove of games available with Wind Waker, Metroid Prime, Mario Sunshine, etc. What a time to be alive. RE4 is a classic always and forever. Please Capcom don’t mess up the remake.
M celus912 ps2 and xbox were amazing as well. The last generation that had true killer app exclusives on all consoles. There's really no point in owning all 3 consoles nowadays but back then you had the likes of tekken, final fantasy, morrowind, halo, REmake, metroid prime 1 and 2...all on the list of best games of all time for people exclusive to a certain console.
@@alanlee67 absolutely. That really was a golden age for video games. I never had an Xbox, but PS2…FFX, GTA, God of War, Metal Gear Solid 2 and especially 3…absolute classics! I feel like game development has changed so much nowadays with the primary focus being commercial appeal. Which, it is what it is, at the end of the day, it’s a business. While I did enjoy RE8, I don’t think it will generate the same nostalgic feeling as RE4 several years from now.
Back in the day I bought the GameCube specifically because Capcom said that RE4 was going to be exclusive to that console. That's the only reason I bought. But it really was a great system. Ended up playing alot of games on it.
Yuu can use it in mercenaries I think they removed it because it clipped through his model too much in the cutscenes and made it awkward to animate the action sequences, also you probably already know but you can see one of the villager zombie guys wearing it in seperate ways
Funny you mentioned it, because Capcom just announced they’re removing the “ballistics” line,, “how bout we do some overtime?” as well as looking up Ashley’s skirt in VR.
With the revelation that it was Facebook that was responsible for the censorship, I hope future re-releases of RE4 keep it in… especially since the Censorship makes Ashley look like a total asshole
@@omniscension8967 the part where he talks about her ballistics was cut but not her negative reaction to it so in the VR version Luis shows up and she immediately just goes off on him for no reason
RE4 is probably the most well put-together game I have ever played. It's not even my personal favorite game (I have a couple of Mario, Metroid, Zelda, and Castelvania games over it) but I can't deny its quality. The more time passes and I revisit RE4, there's absolutely no doubt in my mind that this is a "once in a lifetime" type of experience. I hardly doubt any other game can recapture its harmony between the core gameplay systems available, supreme level design, masterful encounter design, excellent pacing, attention to detail and the complementary yet untouchable artistic vision behind its music tracks and visual fidelity. It's a mesh of accidental and very deliberate creative decisions that took form in such a balanced result, so hard to replicate that not even Mikami himself was able to with The Evil Within 1 and even the Resi team while creating RE5. Not really about the way it holds hostage the very best of enemy encounters, surprisingly deep currency system, reliable and still open enough gameplay loop, crazy boss fights, the unapologetic bizarre world surrounding it, secrets and somehow infinitely replayable campaign. It's all about how everything mentioned previously blends so well together, because...? It really shouldn't feel this good or even work this well, except it somehow does and it's mind-boggling to even consider how a creative vision held everything together in such an effective way. There's nothing quite like it, and for me it's hard to believe that there will be again, which is insane to consider.
I believe Nier Automata has that in common with RE4, there is just ALOT of gameplay there. And also different kinds of gameplay. It will hold up forever because it's FUN. For example, they did the opposite with the latest god of war Ragnarok. Man i hated that game because there virtually is no gameplay other than the thin combat.
If you look at a top boss battles for RE games list, most the entries will usually be RE4 bosses lol Only boss I hate is Salazar cause he takes way to much ammo. I usually just rocket launcher his ass.
i finally gave this game another chance and pushed past the awkward controls and im so glad i did. this is such a great game. and now that im used to the controls i cant stop playing it 😂
@@neurohack9038 The controls are awkward for many people who try it for the first time nowadays because most 3rd person games in recent years don't control like RE4 does. In RE4 you can't strafe, you can't move while aiming, and the camera is more restricted than in many newer 3rd person games. Those differences can take some getting used to.
I compare RE4 to Ocarina of Time, Final Fantasy VII, and Breath of the Wild. Where developers are given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to do to something new with an established, successful franchise, and they go absolutely fucking nuts. They cut loose with their imagination and go way above and beyond what has gone before in terms of content, production values, structure, design, everything, and forge ahead with the kind of assured confidence and financial muscle that only a franchise with a substantial built-in fanbase can provide. They go the extra mile, because they're on an unprecedented, literally game-changing roll. It doesn't happen often, but it's almost always special. RE4 is an all-time great that is required playing for anyone who loves game design.
For me, it's all about milking the mechanics as to why people who love game design should play RE4. Mainly because throughout the game if you're not interacting with something with the action button, you're shooting, knifing, or throwing a grenade at it. And it's in shooting, knifing, and grenading interactable objects that truly lend the game its depth.
@@thelegendofthem6120 Not so much, he has some right addictions but not all of them true, for example RE 4 ruined RE franchise, and it was not the game changer there was Gta and other games before THAT changed the game industry forever in a good way then it went bad with the 2017-2021's games but there are still good games at least.
I love the first fight in the village, just cause in one quick cinematic it tells fans of the old games: “Remember everything you’ve learned in past games? Yeah, none of that works here. Here’s twenty enemies at a time that can coordinate and go anywhere you do. Oh, and one of them has a chainsaw. Have fun!”
I liked the horror in the first DEAD Space and silent hill horror more than Resident Evil but I love the action as long as its RE4, RE3 type of action.
In every RE boss there’s a “trick” to defeat, & even knowing that is a trick. As this was my 1st RE game I didn’t know that. So after dying to Gigante the first time, I maxed out all my ammo, health etc. After an epic 20-45 minute battle, every hut demolished, all ammo gone, all health gone, in my still most bravest gaming moment, I charged it with just my knife, and then popped up a banner that said “cut the growth on it’s back”, and it was “ooooooh, that’s what you need to do to defeat it!”
Watching this video with the background ambience made me realise how beautiful RE4’s soundtrack is, especially in the village. I hope to play it some day, maybe when it’s remade :)
The music in this game is legendary. I agree, but the the castle always did and still to this day creeps me out especially with the music. Re4 will always be in my top favorite games.
I think you should give it a shot on Evil Within, it has a lot in common with RE 4 and the weapons are just too fun to use, the sequel to it is just perfect, it's a big open area for you to explore and lots of stuff to collect and some pretty horrendous monsters
Good video! Still one of the best RE games and one of the best games of all time. Now let's all sit back and pray that Capcom doesn't cut a bunch of content from the remake and does it justice 🙏
I got a Nintendo Gamecube for this and Metal Gear Solid The Twin Snakes. Discovered Resident Evil Remake. Don't sleep on the Cube. Excellent system with an excellent library.
This is the first Resident Evil game where Umbrella isn't responsible for the monsters and bio organic weapons (BOW) creations. Umbrella is gone by this point, and may yet come back. The Matilda handgun was named after the character with the same name from the movie Léon: The Professional (1994), which also had a main character called Leon. This Resident Evil used all new enemies that were not in any of the previous games. No zombies, no Cerberus, no crows, no giant spiders, no tyrants, no hunters, no lickers made it to this installment. This is the first Resident Evil presented in 16:9 widescreen. All previous entries were displayed in 4:3 fullscreen. This is why when the game is played on an 4:3 television it appears to be letterboxed. The gameplay was changed after Mikami realized that many of the game designers were tired of the same formula used in other Resident Evil games. The cult name Los Illuminados translates to "The Enlighted" in English. The parasites, Las Plagas, translates to "the plagues" in English. During the end boss battle, Ada Wong suddenly appears and throws a special rocket launcher that can be used to kill the boss. The same thing happens at the end of Resident Evil 2 (1998). Albert Wesker, long-time nemesis in the Resident Evil series, is only mentioned in the main game as the mastermind behind Krauser's and Ada's involvement in obtaining a Las Plagas sample. He makes a visual appearance in the 'Separate Ways' side-missions, though. When Ada and Leon meet up in Salazar's quarters, Ada sneaks up from behind and (after a brief fight) tells him: "Long time no see". Albert Wesker says the same thing when he approaches Chris Redfield from behind in Resident Evil: Code: Veronica (2000). Those infected and controlled by Las Plagas are called Ganados. In Spanish, "ganado" means "cattle" or "livestock". However, it is rarely used in the plural (except as a form of the verb "ganar", which means "to win" or "to earn"). The original GameCube version contains a unique glitch where sometimes after reopening a save file, Leon will move sideways instead of forward. If you reset the game and reopen the save file though, Leon will walk straight again. Another glitch caused Leon to move much faster than normal, making shooting and slicing a knife much easier. During any cutscene in which Leon draws his weapon it will always be the handgun that you start the game with that he draws, even if you've sold it and bought a different one. The Killer 7 handgun was named after Killer7 (2005), another Capcom game produced by Shinji Mikami. This is the only weapon in the game not to feature an exclusive upgrade. In addition to the Mathilda, the game pays home to the movie Léon: The Professional (1994) in an unlockable "Professional" difficulty.
Yay to more Mercenaries content, boo to yet another lame multiplayer only game. A proper Outbreak or Operation Raccoon City game or nothing multiplayer from Capcom again.
The quick time events in Resident Evil 4 are perfect, there implemented into the gameplay smoothly and the few that are in cutscenes are really just there to keep you paying attention and active
I don't care. There are no good quick time events for me. If you want me to watch the cutscene & pay attention, do it through good dialogue, story, or voice acting. QTEs are incredibly annoying.
Bro i got resident evil 4 on wii, iphone 3g, PlayStation 4 and recently bought it again on the switch. I FUCKING LOVE THIS GAME always have always will. Ill never get tired of replaying it
I'm quite surprised you haven't played The Evil Within it's IMO one of the greatest horror games of all time, great atmosphere, sound design, enemy design and it's full of RE references! and it's not easy! You should give it a go sometime it will probably surprise you :) and great review for this game!
i know the remake was later but i LOVE how near the first regenerator all you hear is the breathing, and very low ambient music, people who played re4 original would tense up like i did, and maybe people who never played the original
When this game came out for GameCube it was pleasantly surprising how long the game was. You got a lot of content for the money. Then the ps2 version came out and you got the Ada missions which were great. The game has aged very well and that virtual reality version looks really fun
The verdugo fight is probably the most memorable fight in the game...( among others ) but this horrible creature can do in very rare occasions , wiggles his index finger and moving left to right in plain "Don't do that "
Lmao Gothic 2 has a similar Easter Egg - if you swim too far away from the harbor, you get Gobbled up by a Leviathan-like creature. Nice video btw - the only RE game I played was the third one on the PS1 back in the day, but I sure enjoyed your take on 4!
I always like this game in the series the most, because it gave Visceral the inspiration for Dead Space. Which is one of my favorite games to ever come out of EA when they a had spell of risk taking and encouraged developers to just throw stuff against the wall and see what sticks.
@@lanceelopezz223 fatal frame and silent hill are the only non-Resident Evil games you mentioned that I have on my list. You, sir, have just expanded my list. Thanks a million bruh
Bro…. Since 2005 and 4 remasters, 30+ play through and I still love it. Always hop on again playing new game professional. Too good of a game that the remake better not fuck up on. Don’t let it be like RE3. Don’t cut shit it and keep to its roots like RE2 remake
You simply had to be there. My only experience with Resi back in the 90's was seeing that cover art for the original game, and playing the opening level of RE2 at my uncle's place. Only when I got the Gamecube in 2002, I had to buy REmake, because it looked out of this world. It was one of the greatest video game experiences for me. A year later, I bought RE0, liked it a lot, and then 2, 3 and CVX came out on Gamecube. Bought them, loved them all. When RE4 was announced, I was worried about the change in gameplay and perspective. Yet, I bought it on day 1. And it's still one of my most vivid gaming memories. It fastly became my favorite game of all time, even to this day, and I replay it once a year. RE5 was a disappointment for me, but the game grew on me with every subsequent playthrough, and I really like it now. I guess the abomination that was RE6 helped a little with my view of RE5 ^^ A little correction: it's definitely Spain, because they namedrop Madrid in the game, so there is no ambiguity.
The track that starts playing at 11.30 is probably my favourite video game song ever. It’s so fucking cool. It’s scary, it’s unsettling, it fills you with adrenaline, it’s weird. Such a cool track. I bet any other game would have typical action music playing, not this.
I remember being insanely scared of the village part in re4 cause it felt so real. Reminds me a lot of those mid 2000's horror flicks like hills have eyes and texas chainsaw massacre.
Currently doing my first VR playthrough of re4 and man this is awesome. This is also my first VR experience and I don't think I could have chosen a better first game.
I think the remake is gonna be good. In my opinion, the reason RE 3 remake failed is because it was rushed. It was released just 1 year after the amazing RE 2 Remake. With RE4 remake, they actually had time to make it good. I'm optimistic about it. But, if RE 4 remake fails, I'm never trusting another RE remake again.
Resident evil 4 was at the start anyway a GameCube exclusive, I believe it got a release a year early from all other consoles which I think it only got those other console releases because of how popular it was, I know it was my first resident evil game and rated m game I ever played
Okay. I want to actually bitch about that lawsuit. I think CAPCOM is in the right, and the original author is in the wrong. First off, that was almost certainly a single artist or producer who was _truly_ responsible for using those photos. I don't think CAPCOM at large should be thrown under the bus, even if they are a money-hungry publisher. If the suits had no problem buying everyone Autodesk and Adobe licenses, they wouldn't mind buying a single photo library, which they, in all honesty, probably thought that they did. And nobody should lose their job for it. Second, at first I was on Ms. Juracek's side. But upon looking through the book itself, the way its advertised, as well as her plaintiff document... I'm sorry but this is some bullshit. The book itself states the photos and materials provided on the included CD are "ready to be used". It does not mention a single time throughout the book that you must contact her for permission to use the CD contents. It is stated only once, at the ass end of the book, that "Original images can be obtained from the author." And even then, this literally doesn't say anything about needing to ask her for permission to use the TIFF files on the CD, the way it's advertised, but that is _exactly_ the basis of her entire lawsuit. Her argument is literally that since CAPCOM didn't contact her for the original high-res images, they weren't allowed to use the CD contents at all. So what does this mean? The CD is just lawsuit bait, and should have (and could have) been watermarked if she ACTUALLY did not want people to use them without her permission. Could she _technically_ be right in spite of her bullshit and plausible deniability? Well maybe there's an actual copyright lawyer in the comments who can educate me, but as it stands, this lawsuit is so ambiguous at best that it's likely down to whoever has more lawyer money (which will definitely be CAPCOM). And at this point, I hope she loses, because this is clearly just a boomer looking to make a quick fortune.
This is a pretty simple case, and she’ll win it. They used her assets and didn’t pay her for it. Pretty open and shut. It doesn’t matter if the content on the disc wasn’t watermarked, it’s up to the publisher to make sure that they had the rights to use the material in the game they publish. Also, Ms Juracek will lose her intellectual property if she doesn’t sue, so she has to. The first film that I worked on, BTW, was a documentary made by an independent filmmaker, and my entire job was to make sure that we had every single license fo revery single clip that we used. Some footage you can download doesn’t have watermarks. That doesn’t matter. Does it belong to somebody? Then you make sure you have rights to use it.
@@JasonBoyce That is pretty interesting, thank you! I also forgot about the whole losing the IP aspect, good point bringing that up. I'm not entirely convinced yet she'll slam-dunk CAPCOM's lawyer army, but I hope we get to hear more on this someday.
This game is truly just amazing and will have a important place in my heart, to think that I used to be so scared while playing this but I enjoyed it too much to quit so I used to listen to my favorite music list while playing it.
This, Resident Evil 1:HD Remake Remastered, and Resident Evil 2 Remake are my favorites. I'll admit, 2 and 3:Nemesis hold soft spots in my heart (Jill starting out with the assault rifle and nato rounds gunning down enemies is one of the most memorable entrances in gaming for me).

This was perfect timing because I just completed this game yesterday I love it
I originally played this on GameCube after purchasing a used game console from a local GameStop my last year in high school.

Beautifully put
Wow...well said 👏👏👏😉👍💯
I believe Nier Automata has that in common with RE4, there is just ALOT of gameplay there. And also different kinds of gameplay. It will hold up forever because it's FUN. For example, they did the opposite with the latest god of war Ragnarok. Man i hated that game because there virtually is no gameplay other than the thin combat.
Will Claire ever get with Leon? Will Chris have Leon and Claire together, continuing the bloodline? World may never know.
If you look at a top boss battles for RE games list, most the entries will usually be RE4 bosses lol

RE4 will never get old to me. There is nothing like it anywhere in the gaming universe. This was a great essay. Very enjoyable.

Re4 may have more versions than skyrim, but at least capcom came out with loads more resident evil games after it since lol
