- The Nanki (南紀) is a limited express train service in Japan operated by Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central), which runs from Nagoya to Shingū and Kii-Katsuura. The service passes through several notable and important locations, situated on the Kii Peninsula, such as Matsusaka. Travelling the entire 246 km (152.9 mi) journey from Nagoya to Kii-Katsuura takes just under four hours, whilst the 231.1 km (143.6 mi) section from Nagoya to Shingu takes approximately three and a half hours. As this train is a Limited Express service, a Limited Express fee is required to ride this train, on top of the basic fee.
The best feature for many of Limited Express Nanki trains is the window that wraps around the cockpit offering un-interrupted views of the tracks in front of behind the train.

I'm not a big train enthusiast - I just dabble. But I'm disabled with limited mobility. Traveling used to be one of THE most favorite things in life. Most people hate traveling - the hustle-bustle of the airport, jostling for seats on a train, dealing with other people in close quarters. Me? I love it. Even the smell of diesel fuel and stale cigarette smoke gets me pumped for a trip somewhere. Even now the smell of coffee in the morning reminds me of getting up early to start a long road trip to somewhere exciting. I didn't even care where I was going. These kinds of videos are the only way I get to go anywhere now and I cherish them - even though you only get to use two senses (sight and sound - and both are limited) I can still almost smell the train, feel the wind, sense the exotic nature of the places these trains go. It always amazes me how one person's boring everyday work commute is someone else's first time, awe-inspiring, journey to the unknown. I do live in a beautiful area surrounded on three sides by a national forest. People from the city come to visit me and they are floored by the natural beauty, some even calling this place an Eden. To me, it's just a little town, some hills, a river valley and lots of trees. I have to remind myself that to someone from the city where it's all cement, asphalt, and bricks, seeing endless virgin forests and wide, unspoiled, undeveloped rivers is strange for them. And so, I watch these train videos to try and recapture just a little piece of that excitement I used to feel when we were on a trip somewhere. I really miss it.

It amazes me the enthusiasm so many Japanese people have for railways and train spotting. At the 2:01:49 mark, between Aso and Ise-Kashiwazaki, you can see two rail enthusiasts waiting to photograph this train as it passes.
The train spotters are everywhere, even at little walkway crossing spots. Much more than what I see in real life. Thought it was neat.

Thank you so much for posting this video. I lived in Shingu for three years, and took this train often. Sometimes I feel nostalgic about the small, everyday things that I experienced, and this video really helps me to remember what it was like.

Same! There's so many places I would go see just for the fun of it if the US had a similar rail system.
We have a now unused narrow gauge freight line like this going right through the most populous areas of our city (only 260k people) and our government refuses to use it for light passenger rail, they are wedded to highways and parking spaces.

伊勢鉄道を含む河原田以南が非電化なだけでなく単線区間も多いのがネックですが走行性能は良いですね

I used to have similar uninterrupted views of the countryside in UK.... but I was a train driver for over 40 years... now happily retired... great video though... It is amazing how similar the Japanese & British railway signalling standards are.... even the track gauge of 3ft 6in/1067mm sounds like British railway engineering got here first...
Actually Japan first built it's railways pretty much to british standards, although they used the 3.5 ft gauge because of the mountainous terrain.
The signaling system is a hybrid of route and speed signaling though. Wikipedia has some pretty in depth articles about it.
Always enjoy seeing the Japanese landscape and countryside. Was there a driver change at Kii-Nagashima station? And Shingu?

When I finally managed to travel to Japan, I want to travel as much as possible by these trains too see as much as the countryside as possible, so it doesn't just whizz by at a blur like it does in the Shinkansen.

Thanks for the upload. Didn't seem to be many people on many of the trains though. Is it a route not often used or traveled as much anymore ? Or did the time of the day have something to do with it ?
The first section is a relatively suburban line that was originally built as a bypass for Mie and Wakayama bound trains (Ise Line). Previous to the opening of this line, trains had to do a switch back at Kameyama station from the Kansai main line to the Kisei Line. It’s quite far from any population centers and is directly parallel the Kintetsu Nagoya line which goes through multiple towns along the coast. If you look at around the 58 minute mark, you can see that the line was originally supposed to be double tracked to Tsu station but that was shelved since not many passengers uses the line. The latter half from Matsusaka to Kii-Katsuura is entirely rural and mountainous. There definitely aren’t as many commuters from that section(Kisei Line).

Funny line to watch: single track but stations with 3 tracks. Single track where there is enough space for double track. Electrification that suddenly stops in the middle of stations. Still single but room for double at 57:52 and beyond. Big station at 1:05:26 but no platform for the line we are running on. Also strange: lights at the left AND right side of the track. Most confusing. Good to see the driver pointing at them.

Thanks very much for a great video of some more of Japan. others have said similar about the lovely views and countryside. A lovely sunny day as a bonus. I loved a lot of the Classic Japanese buildings styles. A lot of tunnels which would be good to name and the lengths of the same. Thanks for all the station names. We knew you were stopping at stations where you made us wait for its name. I still have not had an answer about the driver's points or waves at something particularly in this video in earlier, perhaps more built-up areas? Is it a substitute for the "Dead" handle where the driver must keep his hand on the control at all times, or the train would stop? Letting the controllers know he is still alive and well? Thanks again.
