My son just bought a pickup. The truck looked great with a few tiny damaged marks on roof, tailgate and hood. We told him when he went to pay to double check the vin number which he did. He paid the man cash. He did not look closely at the title though, and when he went to have the truck re-titled I recognized he had bought a "flooded rebuilt" vehicle. I wish he had seen some of the videos like yours about what to look for. Thanks for doing a great video.

This is not the case in California. A salvaged car remains salvaged even once you register it; however, "salvage" can mean anything from theft, to complete destruction. When an owner refuses to take car back after accident, the insurance scraps it (car must have damage exceeding certain percentage of cars value). If car is stolen, owner can refuse it too with good insurance.
I have purchased many salvaged cars over the years with damage to rear end, hail or theft. These cars are truly a good buy and didnt cause issues after purchase.

    • @unger4132
      @unger4132 7 років тому +10

No it works the same in every state. If you have a salvage title, you can't register the car. You have to get an inspection verifying none of the repaired parts were stolen. Then they hand you a sealed envelope with the salvage title in it saying whether or not it has passed inspection. You must bring that sealed envelope to your local tag agency where you can then register you car as long as it says your car has passed inspection when they open the envelope.

FrostyFooy lol, doesn't work the same in California. Salvage titles can be registered at the dmv, it's actually very simple paperwork and yes, an inspection is required by the dmv inspector or in some cases they sent you to a CHP (california highway patrol) for the inspection.

4 years later and I’m in the same boat, did you ever end up buying the rebuilt title car? I’m looking into a BMW that was flooded around 37k miles someone bought it and rebuilt the car had it until 90k miles and sold it to the guy I’m about to buy it from at 110k miles. He says the title is rebuilt but just skeptical because this would be my first time dealing with anything other than a clean title.

In TX all you have to do to get a salvage title car on the road is get it inspected (lights work, no check engine light, goes forward and stops, has mirrors) then sign the rebuilt papers stating your the rebuilder. You can vaugly list what you fixed and also give them copies of receipts. But I just said I got a door paid with cash and replaced lights. Tada rebuilt title, and there's the normal taxes and a 60$ fee

@@suspensefulness people sometimes list salvage rebuilt cars as salvage, the difference is a salvage car can not legally drive on the road. if you have a flood car that was deemed salvage but still drives fine it is not road legal until it has been inspected ( standard tx safty/ and if your near a major metro area like dallas, austin, etc etc emissions as well.) there are some cases when cars can be branded salvage unrepairable or salvage lemmon branding. but for tx its pretty simple

It depends on which state you live in. In MO a car with a salvage title can be driven on the road. I bought a 96 BMW that was impounded after being abandoned in a ditch. Had a hole in the gas tank and was missing the front bumper. Went up to the local Highway patrol they made sure that no stolen parts were used in the repairs and gave a title to me.

Here in AZ, they don't care if it's salvage. They'll let you register and drive it. Got my 12k silverado for 6k. Salvage title baby. Insurance marked the truck for salvage because the pickup bed was hit really bad and they thought the frame was destroyed. A dealer who sells cars out of his house put a used bed on it, painted it and sold it to me. Went and actually had the frame checked. Straight as an arrow. I just had to adjust the bed because when they mounted it, it was slightly crooked. Invested no more money than the inspection and bam, rebuilt title. Great vehicle for half price.

EVERY STATE HAS THEIR OWN WAYS. In WA state Rebuild and Salvaged are treated about the same. If person who sells has title on hand in his name - there is nothing to worry about its just like buying clean title. Just make sure you know what you are buying. I usually want to see pictures of the car from action like how bad was damage. If only front bumper, hood and head light were replaced its not that bad. But some cars are damaged in the front and in the rear and plus rolled over.?!?!... I would skip that car :) People who buy Rebuild Title cars are doing that because they want to get $15,000 car for $7000. That is usually the case

Clarity is important. Sometimes we speak clearly but our listeners do not really listen. Thanks for providing a "HEY, LISTEN TO ME!" video that states this information clearly and without distractions for the many who do not understand these terms.
I was taught by my grandfather that a salvage yard is a junk yard, so a Salvage title means you are buying junk, or a car that is not roadworthy. Something that has been rebuilt means it has been completed a second time, so a Rebuilt title means the car has been built again, and is ready to drive.

I recently bought a Toyota MR2 Spyder from a used car dealership with a clean title, however, I was notified (after I already decided I wanted to buy it) that the car had a rebuilt title in a different state, and that it was somehow cleared to a clean title when it was moved into my state (the dealer did not elaborate or even seem to know how or why), and they made me sign a disclosure agreement or whatever acknowledging I knew this. However, all of the panels appear to be original with matching VIN numbers and only a small dent can be seen on the back. The owner of the dealership came out and said his guess was the car had purely cosmetic damage that the insurance company deemed more than the car's worth. After I bought the car (it was very very cheap so I knew there was some shady stuff going on) I took it to get the oil change and found out the engine was completely replaced with a motor out of a Corolla (both cars have a 1zz engine but the layout is different or something). I didn't have CarFax or anything at the time (which I guess I should've had), but now I see that it has been salvaged and rebuilt, but I have no idea why (my guess is precat failure which blew up the engine, but I don't think that'd totally salvage the car, plus there is evidence it's been hit). But, my point is the dealership acted like the title was clean but it isn't (I guess? All I see on CarFax is that it has been salvaged and rebuilt at one point). Is that grounds to sue? I mean the car is running fine I'm just kinda pissed off the dealership claimed the title was magically clean and didn't mention that the whole engine was replaced (I have no idea how many miles are on it). Then again, I probably just shouldn't have been so impulsive and bought it right then and there.

Aiden is all Knowing sorry but you signed off acknowledged you knew the story from the selling dealer. Unfortunately they got you. That said, you said it was "very, very cheap" so enjoy the deal you got and move on. As far as being titled differently in other states, state to state communications are so poor that these title claims fall thru the cracks so to speak. The GOOD thing is it appears you have a rare car that was a "write off/salvage unit" due to a mechanical malfunction, NOT due to excessive cosmetic/structural damage. You got lucky, enjoy your "very, very cheap" car and move on, as trying to sue will only put $$ in the hands of lawyers

Kick Some Stones Yeah that's honestly what I was expecting. Used Car Lots are always sketchy and are as-is so I'm not shocked or too angry. The car runs and drives and is loads of fun and that's all that matters, and like you said- it's pretty damn rare which is what made me so anxious to buy it (when my other options were the Miata or z3 which are everywhere). It's a learning experience I guess lol

      @grajmahal 7 років тому

yeah, that's a good idea, put more money into the car that probably should be branded. I hate to say it, but you may think everything is all fine and dandy- but what if that car had structural damage and it's just a ticking time bomb and potential safety hazard. You should have used your head and refused to sign anything admonishing the dealership of wrongdoing.
My guess is that your frame was damaged up front- considering you needed a new motor. At the very least you should have insisted on having an independent body shop inspect the car before buying it.

This varies state to state. In Idaho I can register and insure a "Salvage" titled vehicle. I have had a couple cars deemed a "total loss" by the insurance company and I was reimbursed for the damages and retained the vehicle. I then applied for a salvage title through the state DMV.

Hispanics have a network of salespeople that work on commission. The buyers and repairers of wrecked cars use different people that work on commission, so they can skirt liability. When you contact the profile of the seller, they contact the real seller and that's who you will be dealing with. They pay a commission to the front man/woman. On paper, the seller doesn't sell enough cars to be considered a dealer and the law doesn't hold individual sellers accountable the way it does a dealer. It's an easy way for the front man to make 500 to a thousand bucks, without really doing anything.

I got a car at an auction, salvage title runs & drives and it only needed minor fixes and a lot of elbow grease. But little did I know...to register the car according to DMV online...I have to pay $1098. $1098 ? This is the first time I heard of such an amount to pay to register a car. Is this for real ? Is there any way to go around this ? I wanted and got the car for me... not to re-sale. I've never flip a car.
I heard that the DMV because of Covid 19 Is quite understanding now due to the hardship were experiencing.
This is an expensive learning curve for me ...Who really checks VIN #'s ? Auctioneer's has this notes of caution at times on some cars up for auction saying something like "if you plan to register this vehicle..contact customer service" or something like "Parts Only"...etc.
On my car there was no note of caution no red flag at all. I feel like I want to sue them. They knew it was my first time and I felt taken advantage of. It was a 2003 Mini Cooper 109748 miles on it. Total cost to get car in my drive way $1502 + the expense of a full maintenance service and lots of elbow greaase. (Labor is free) and finally the dreaded $1098. I should've just bought a car here . What happened to "Life is good", "Learning is free", "Happiness is a choice" I don't mind paying a couple of parking tickets or a penalty to register this car...But $1098 !!! Are you kidding ? Please advise if theirs still any . Thank you Samcrac
Keep up the video...you're helping lots of people. Sincerely, John

I bought a 2004 Dodge Neon that had a salvage title. I looked up the carfax on it. It was rear ended. The only damage was a small crack in the rear bumper cover and the paint was scuffed. The car's book value was $600, so the repair and paint would have cost more than the car was worth, so the insurance company totaled the car giving it a salvage title. I had it inspected and never repaired the damage. I just told the cop why it totaled. He just made sure all the lights worked and gave me a pass so I could get a rebuilt title. I have put about 50k more miles on it since I bought it as a to and from work car. The only thing I've bought for it is new tires. I paid $400 for the car at the abandoned auto auction.

I'm glad that in my country every consumer purchase has a form of warrenty by law. Even if you sign a contract buying a car that it is without warrenty, the law makes that contract null and void if you find problems that were not in the purchase agreement. The seller then has to either repair the car or give you a full refund. However this is only when consumers buy from a business and you usually do need to threaten them with legal actions or they won't budge. Even if the car isn't owned by the business selling the car they are still responsible so selling your buddies car in your showroom could bring trouble if you don't clearly state it's not yours.

It's not much work it all, it literally takes 10 minutes and 100 bucks, then any obvious title transfer and car registration fees which are mandatory on any vehicle purchase. I just bought a salvage truck and rebuilt the entire front end myself, took it to inspection, was in and out in a few minutes then drove over to my local tag agency and was finished in an hour.

Dude I don't know where this guy is getting all this about pictures and having it fixed and all that.. I've bought salvage cars in the past, you won't have any issues at all. As long as you fix the car which of course you have to do in order to drive it, everything else is the same. It won't cause you any more trouble than a clean title

QUENTIN30 CDUB. Pampers, kleenex, q-tip, band-aid, i'm trying to think of some more and I'm sure there are dozens but the fact is...these are all brand names not the items themselves. Kleenex is a brand of facial tissue. Companies spend millions to get us to say things like q-tip...as opposed to "can I get a cotton swab?"

Thoughts on purchasing an extended service plan on a rebuilt title vehicle? The plan is sold by the dealer that did the work but administered the by a 3rd party. Essentially it’s a plus +5 year / 100k mile plan that covers everything the manufacturer warranty covers. But it’s an insurance based claims plan.

The Rules and Laws change by State, In certain states all you need is a safety and emissions report, The emissions and safety report basically checks all the things that makes the car road safe.

  • @1Shignog

Also some state have laws when buying cars. if they are mislabeled, or other stuff will allow you to go after them regardless but you have to check with your state or the state you are buying the car from, what the laws are.

in Arkansas you can drive a vehicle with a salvage title or also known as a red title on the road without any inspections when i Bought mine all i did was go to the local dmv and hand them the red title and my insurance paperwork and paid for my tags and 3 weeks later they sent me a Salvage title with my name on it i got a $17,000 Chevy z71 4 door for $3500 and the only reason it has a Salvage title is because the rear bumper is bent and the tow package is bent a little bit i took it to 2 different body shops and both said that the insurance company should of never totaled it,
im looking into getting the title changed to rebuild that just go's to show you never know what you will find at a auto auction .

Depreciation is same. Just the selling price of Rebuild or Salvaged is sure bellow clean title. For example 2015 civic clean title will cost $15,000 when Rebuild will cost $10,000. or 2015 Ford Fiesta clean title cost $9000 when with rebuild sells for $7000. But it will depreciate the same no matter what title it has.

Just an FYI - the Windex and BandAid explanation is an example of proprietary eponyms.
Good video - something to not forget, even the two different types of titles, any car previously deemed a total loss with always have a Salvage history (I'm sure you know) and that carries onto subsequent owners. I can't stand when people say "I have a clean title in hand" even knowing the car was a previous salvaged vehicle.

*in most states there is no difference rebuilt is the same as salvaged the title still reads the same when you get it the only difference is that no bank or finance company will usually put their money out for those vehicles because if they had to repo them they aren't going to get the full return on their investment unless it's a really rare or hard to find vehicle that someone is willing to put the money out for just to have*
