Loki legitimately has some of the best character development across the movies in the MCU. Coming from where he is here to where he is now... has been such a satisfying ride. The best really is still to come.
Also, funny side-note... Tom Hiddleston _apparently_ had originally tried auditioning for Thor before being offered Loki. I really can't fault the casting department. It has all worked out for the best, in my opinion. Hiddleston really does a fantastic job of conveying the intensity of Loki's emotions throughout his appearances... and he gets across how much more complex of a character he is than he first appears to be.

FYI, Dr Donald Blake was the original human alter ego/secret identity of Thor in the 1960s comics. He was eventually (like 25 years later) revealed to be a false persona created by Odin to teach Thor humility. So the movie using that name to get Thor freed from SHIELD custody was a fun nod to that.

This remains my favourite MCU film to date. Fun fact: the first guy to find Mjolnir in the desert is J. Michael Straczyncski, creator of Babylon 5 and one of the co-writers for this film. Oh and that scene at the end STILL makes me tear up haha

  • @cmlemmus494

One of the key points about this film that a lot of reactors miss is that the director is Kenneth Branagh, who is best known for directing Shakespeare and classic literature on both stage and screen. Many of the supporting cast is also made up of major theatre actors: Anthony Hopkins as Odin, Rene Russo as Frigga, Stellan Skarsgård as Eric Selvig, and Colm Feore as Laufry all started out playing Shakespeare on stage.
This is why the film feels so epic despite being a story about a jerk who needs to learn to be nice so he can get his magic hammer back. The story is simple enough for kids to enjoy, but the actors and director know how to make simple stories feel real. Not saying other MCU movies are bad, but Thor feels like an entirely different thing.

I don't believe Loki's end plan was his starting plan when he let the frost giants into Asguard. That was just for fun to ruin Thor's big day. It was after learning where he came from that his plans changed.

Hello there! I've just discovered your channel (thanks to the Jurassic Park reaction), and ive been binging your MCU reactions all day! As others have said, yours is the first I've seen that includes the One Shots.
One little detail that is often overlooked is that Thor calls Coulson "Son of Coul", which is where a lot of Norse/Western European second names come from - you are the son (or daughter) of your father - i e. Thor's full name is Thor Odinson. Loki is Loki Laufeyson.

  • @lordmortarius538

In the myths, Loki is actually Thor's uncle, and sired the three greatest threats to Asgard and the Realms: the Fenris Wolf, fated to devour the sun and moon at Ragnarok; Jormungandr the World Serpent, whose venom brings down Thor the Thunderer at the Last Battle; and Hel, half-living and half-dead (literally split down the middle), set to rule the realm of the same name, where the dishonored dead go in the afterlife. She leads this army during the Final Days. Loki also sired Odin's 8-legged horse Sleipnir in an interesting tale that saw him in a lot of hot water after promising Freya's hand in marriage to a giant in exchange for building the walls of Asgard.
Loki is the god of mischief, and he did get into some shenanigans. He shaved off Thor's wife Sif's beautiful blonde hair as a prank, and when faced with his nephew's wrath, he promised to make it up to him and the other gods, and so he enlisted the aid of the sons of Ivaldi, dvergr craftsmen, to forge three grand gifts: a wig of pure gold for Sif, that lived and grew as real hair; the collapsible ship Skidbladnir which went to the god Freyr, who could fold up the ship to fit in his pocket; and finally Gungnir, the Spear of Fire, for Odin. On his way back with the gifts, Loki met two other dvergr, Brokkr and Eitri, and bet them his head that they couldn't possibly make better items than these. To prove they were the best, the two set to work, and forged three wondrous items; Gullinbursti, a great boar with golden bristles that shone so bright that it could see in the darkness, and could travel over any land or sea, and fly through the air; the golden ring Draupnir, which every ninth night would drip eight new rings from it; and finally the great and powerful hammer, Mjolnir the Mullicrusher, which would never fail to hit any target it was thrown at, and would always return to its wielder's hand. During the forging of each of these, Loki took the form of a fly and bit Brokkr to distract him so that the gifts would not be as good as the others, so he could keep his head. It wasn't until Mjolnir was being made that Brokkr slapped at the fly, and accidentally cut the handle off short.
Loki returned with the gifts, and presented them with Brokkr and Eitri, while Thor, Odin, and Freyr sat in judgment. Brokkr gifted the boar to Freyr, the ring to Odin, and the hammer, of course, to Thor. After some time the gods decided that of all the gifts presented, Mjolnir was the best one as it gave them the greatest chance against the giants in the coming battles. Loki tried to run but was caught, although Odin decided that losing his head was a bit much for such a bet. Instead, he allowed Brokkr to sew his mouth shut with golden wire, so that his schemes would be stopped for a time.
There are all kinds of great stories in Norse myth. I especially love the Thor as Valkyrie Bride one :D

If you're familiar with Norse mythology at all, you can tell that Marvel intended this to be the in-universe origin of that mythology, that the gods are actually aliens with powers and such.

I actually really do remember. It was a huge part of that movie. I just meant that I know there’s a little more to learn about the cube as far as origin story goes and what exactly it is. Because to be fair, I really don’t know much about it. I know that it’s a cube that holds great power and was put into the wrong hands. It was used to make dangerous and scary weapons 😂 I’ve heard a few facts about it already since the upload yesterday. After watching Captain America those weeks ago, I never would’ve put 2 and 2 together that the cube has relation to Odin. The parts Schmidt mentioned or hinted about where the cube came from flew over my head because I made a mistake of notttt watching Thor first 🤣 But now it’s starting to make a little more sense? maybe?

@@kaylyptic I think it's fair to assume that the average human in the MCU is at least a little bit less breakable than in the real world. Obviously you've got people with super powers like Cap and Hulk, but even a normal human... Tony survived that fall in Iron Man (after escaping from the cave and flying away, then crashing) that *should've* killed him. Stuff like that happens in the MCU with more regularity than it should. I assume people aren't necessarily unnaturally durable or anything, but just luckier? Like, people in the real world have survived some crazy stuff, done some crazy stuff, it's just remarkably unlikely. I assume in the MCU that stuff, while still rare, is more like "can happen from time to time" rather than "essentially never happens".
Which doesn't necessarily matter for being frozen, specifically, but something to keep in mind when people survive some rough stuff.
ALSO, not every person - not every non-superpowered being - is human. I'm still not sure how "tough" Asgardians are supposed to be. Thor is a little-g god, so of course he's an SPB, but non-god Aasgardians apparently can live hundreds of years? Thousands? I don't know if they're supposed to be special in any other way beyond living longer; it's never been explicitly addressed.
