  • Mark Fuller is the eccentric owner of what could be the most technically advanced water fountain-maker on the planet (the Fountains of Bellagio in Las Vegas being among his more famous). In this episode of "Hello World," Ashlee Vance travels to Burbank, California, to chat with Mark, and see how his $200 million water features are created.

    A fountain company is able to invest so deeply into their own custom factory? Wow, whats the revenue and profit? Supremely impressed.

    • @valleyhack
      @valleyhack 5 років тому +21

      Yeah, that's kinda the amazing thing about it. Am sure the margins on the projects are fantastic. But it's gotta be tricky when you're dependent on the next big thing always walking through the door. And, I think, they're facing competition from knock offs. My impression mostly was that Mark is determined to do all this stuff in house and has been burned by outsourcing in the past because he needs one-offs and not mass production, so doesn't get the love from suppliers. I've been to just about every kind of factory there is, and this is one of the most impressive.

      Ashlee Vance that’s a great point, I guess making reliable equipment is super important, a fountain with a missing stream would instantly look rough kind of like a neon sign with one letter burned out. But like Tesla making seats in house, that stuff is expensive! PCB boards and casting, all under one roof, so many disciplines to become an expert in is not easy. Awesome work, this season is gonna be fun!

      probably because they dont really have competition and many of their clients are pretty well off

    Goodness gracious....what a dream job!
    I’ve spent years of my life immersed by each category in their Factory!
    Electronics, microscopy, optics/lasers, material science/analysis, machining & tool technology, metallurgy/casting/forging, industrial control/process solutions, and woodworking (obviously).
    Their facility is a dream! A place where MANY categories of discovery and experimentation mix together into something new! No boundaries in that place!
    That must be lovely.

    How much money does it cost to solve the housing crisis and homelessness? How much pollution can we clean up with 200 million dollars? What does it cost to create renewable energy and fresh water for 2nd and third world country? How much money does it take to fix the infrastructure in Flint? How much does it cost to replant trees around the world for every tree we take down? What can we do with 200 million to offer the biggest impact to combat rising natural disasters? How do we reduce the cost of college education to increase the longevity of our nation health and economy? What can we do with 200 million to reformat our educational curriculum that hasn't changed with the times to teach our kids about basic finance, taxes, accounting and how to survive a natural disasters? How do we get 200 million to spread the message of how to get more volunteers to sign up for good works? How do we incentivise college students to make learning more hands on and to learn what it's like to get paid for their time? What can we do with 200 million to Foster our younger generations to become smarter and less wasteful for the future?
