My dad travelled a lot for his work, he brought back the wiz in the 70s. Whenever we went on any road trip we listened to this stage performance, it made any long journey extremely enjoyable. Now all these years on, the magic is still here. I remember the movie coming out later and how it disappointed me, this soul album musically was so much stronger than anything I heard in the movie adaptation.
I got to see the revival of the original cast with Ms. Mills and everyone in 1992 when they came to Philly. I grew up with the vinyl a first edition which I still have. Seeing her sing this in person was one of the most magical moments of my life.
My grandsons high school did this they were applauded as the best play ever done at their high school...He played the cowardly lion.. Those kids were magnificent. He won the best actor award from the school thst year..
Loved this play. OMG I will never forget it. Awesome, skintingling awesome! Stephanie Mills... indescribable! The actors and actresses, singing, music, costumes, If only we could go back to that time and space and see it all over again.
Having been performing in local theaters for 7-8 years now, I remember doing this show in school and how that was where I first met many of the friends I would credit for so many great times and precious moments on stage together. Thank you for posting this.

As another person in the comments stated , "I love the song home!" so do I! but "soon as I get home" is such a beautiful composition as well!! This song has so much stirring emotions and you feel them from the way Stephanie sings it! This is one of my best songs off the entire soundtrack for The Broadway musical. I hate the movie version of The Wiz starring Diana Ross!
There's a feeling here inside that I cannot hide and I know I've tried But its turning me around I'm not sure that I'm aware, If I'm up or down, if I'm here or there, I need both feet on the ground Why do I feel like I'm drowning When there is plenty of air Why do I feel like frowning I think the feeling is fear Here I am in a different place In a different time In this time and space I don't wanna be here I was told I must see the Wiz But I don't know what a Wizard is I just hope the Wiz is there Maybe I'm just going crazy Letting myself get uptight I'm acting just like a baby But I'm gonna be alright Soon as I get home Soon as I get home In a different place In a different time Different people around me I would like to know of the different world, And how different they find me “In my mind this is clear- Original Television Cast of the Wiz LIVE! & Shanice Williams And just what's a Wiz If it's big will it scare me? If I ask to leave Will the Wiz even hear me? And how will I know then If I will ever get home again Here I am alone though it feels the same I dont know where Im going I'm here on my own and it's not a game And The strange wind is blowing I am so amazed by the things that I see here Don't wanna be afraid, I just don't wanna be here In my mind this is clear What am I doing here I wish I was home
This always upsets me that they would devalue the ground breaking milestone that this production achieved on Broadway by featuring Diana Ross to even think her vocal ability could ever match up with this awesome talent.. PLEASE ENLIGHTEN ME FOLKS....
Stephanie does a nice job here with this song! On Thursday night on NBC, I expect Shanice Williams (the new Dorothy) to sing this justice after she falls from the tornado as NBC presents the Wiz Live where Ms. Mills will play Auntie Em in honor of the original Broadway production's 40th anniversary!
***** December 7th. It will feature Wiz Live director Kenny Leon with Harvey Fierstein leading the cast as Edna as well as writing the teleplay. Jennifer Hudson will be Maybelle, Martin Short will be Wilbur and Derek Hough will be Corny Collins. The show will be performed in front of a live audience in the Universal Backlot in Hollywood.
@@j.i.r608 There is a difference between a 'Broadway' vocal and a 'recording' vocal. To blow every night for months, even years is different than being on the road doing a round of concerts. They shouldn't be compared at all, they are in different genres. (The Lion King has been running on Broadway since 1997).
nobody ever did this better than Stephanie, Diana Ross singing this in the movie was awful, then in the HBO 1979 show she kicked ass on it, and again in the Central Park concert, Awesome, this girl who did this NBC show was badly miscast, her singing was flat she just didn't look the part. I would rather have Stephanie Mills do the lead as Dorothy, to me is was never about age, because there is no place like home. Stephanie even looked younger the that girl.
+Manuel Campuzano I thought Shanice's voice was unnaturally high when she sang, like her voice didn't fit what I expected to come out of her mouth I guess. And to be honest, I actually would not object if Stephanie returned as Dorothy for the 2016 run of the wiz of broadway again. It would be amazing and it would bring in a crowd. Height wise, she's still only about 4'9 tall and she's still got the voice. If she's still got the moves, I don't see why not. Although I did enjoy the NBC version
+Manuel Campuzano Well, Diana was evoking emotion in the movie version, keep in mind Dorothy is scared as shit being in a new and strange land. She's not going to sing the right key.
No way No way No way in Hell is this as good as the film version with Diana Ross. This sounds bubbly and almost kiddie like. At the start of the music on this version I almost imagined clowns coming out to do balloon tricks. But Miss Ross in the flim version is slowed down where you can actually feel her immense fear and uncertainty in a place unknown and strangely unfamiliar and frightening. Diana Ross sings this song in the movie with such raw emotion and depth and conviction like no other. Then sprinkled with Quincy Jones masterful arrangements makes Diana Ross's ballad version much more convincing and heartfelt. This version sounds to happy to be in a place unknown with fear. Diana Ross was Brilliant as Dorothy in THE WIZ movie. I thank God every day she was cast as Dorothy in the film. Stephanie was good for the stage version. More people on the planet and around the world are more familiar with the spectacular phenomenal movie version though with Diana Ross and Michael Jackson.

Charlie Smalls was amazing
You have to appreciate every aspect of experience...
Stephanie Mills was my idol when I was little. Her voice is perfection.
This song is a pure masterpiece!
Iconic Broadway Show and Cast

Really dig this tune, beautiful changes, jazz waltz leading into the soul-funk feel. Charlie Smalls was something else
Have you ever heard of Lizz Wright's jazz rendition?
Yes. I have never met a rendition of this song that I did not like.
I like the one from the movie as well.
My grandsons high school did this they were applauded as the best play ever done at their high school...He played the cowardly lion.. Those kids were magnificent. He won the best actor award from the school thst year..
Wow awesome!
I love this soundtrack. it helps so much because I have the part of Dorothy in The Wiz this fall
Piece of advice, make Dorothy 100% yourself and make the audience love you.
Loved this play. OMG I will never forget it. Awesome, skintingling awesome! Stephanie Mills... indescribable! The actors and actresses, singing, music, costumes, If only we could go back to that time and space and see it all over again.
One of my absolute favorites..Got to see it with Stephanie Mills and Ren Woods
My school just performed The Wiz this past weekend. Forever crying at the great memories we made :'(
What a gift to the world she is. So beautiful. Thanks for this great upload.
Agreed!

Love! I can see my 13 year old daughter singing this!!!
Absolutely LOVE it!!! Ms.Mills and the entire gifted musicians &composers..NAILED it!!what a timeless masterpiece👍
I love the arrangements of the songs, phenomenal! 💗
Thank you so much for posting this. God bless the incomparable Stephanie Mills.
I love this version and Lizz Wright's cover!
Dear child, this isn't a version. This is the original, the song. Everything else is a version.
My favorite song💕 from this play.
We are about to a play of the wiz soon. My audition for it is tomorrow. I am nervous but excited.
Try and keep your head up high
My song

I have to sing this as I’m playing Dorothy and I’m so scared but will never compare to this x😱😱😱

When there is plenty of air
Why do I feel like frowning
I think the feeling is fear
Here I am in a different place
In a different time
In this time and space
I don't wanna be here
I was told I must see the Wiz
But I don't know what a Wizard is
I just hope the Wiz is there
Maybe I'm just going crazy
Letting myself get uptight
I'm acting just like a baby
But I'm gonna be alright
Soon as I get home
Soon as I get home
In a different place In a different time Different people around me
I would like to know of the different world, And how different they find me

I love this musical.
I hope NBC does the remake this year.
+Matthew Bennett Wish them good luck Thursday night

That's because Diana "Boss" went behind the scene's securing ths role for herself. Even after her baby daddy Barry Gordy said no. Smh.
@@Hervinbalfour It saddens me knowing Diana basically bought herself the part. Imagine how well this young lady at the time could've done in the film.
This is rlly helping me since my school play is this and i really want to do good! :3 thx!

+Manuel Orozco honestly I like Shanice's better but Stephanie is great here
+Kevin Falk equally for me
+Kevin Falk Oh and if you want to know what NBC's next production is, It's Hairspray Live
***** December 7th. It will feature Wiz Live director Kenny Leon with Harvey Fierstein leading the cast as Edna as well as writing the teleplay. ***** Vocal wise yes but I prefer Diana as a singer than Stephanie.
I waswondering what was diff duh in the movie Diana sang this and she sounded ok but Stephanie did this honey!
Stephanie was pretty good for someone of her age, but Diana is a more experienced singer & actress

Yes she did, and she was only 14 or 15 years old when she recored this.
I think Home Is a masterpiece but "Soon as I get home" is just as beautiful! Stephanie Mills is the true OG. Not a fan of the movie version
This is dope but I just cant get Diana's version outta my soul💯💜
I’m singing this song for a play and it’s the wiz the one with Diana Ross I’m doing it for black history month
masterpiece
Well, I was looking for the Movie Version but this works too.
Way better than the Diana Ross version. Timeless Classic By Stephanie Mills.
Yes, this is much better, straight to the point and more cohesive.
1:42 is my favourite
😁😀😃😄
U am now doing it in year 7
Why wasn't The Wiz an animated film?

I think it was for the better that Stephanie had passed the torch

I didn't like the fast version of home...
