I installed a brick walk (about 50 ft. long and 4 ft. wide, running bond) at my house 20 years ago. The ground is clay and I set the brick in about 2 to 3 inches of sand. No problems at all, the sand base worked great in my case. The only thing I have done is replace the sand in the joints with a polymeric sand which has prevented any weed growth. Still level and no-maintenance.

I think the main problem was that it didn't have concrete along the sides, the way he did it is the best but on walkways most of the time you just need to compact the dirt a little bit and some concrete on the edge. On driveways you have to do all this process cause the weight of the cars

The edging seals moves about inch away from the border pavers and I think this seems to happen when the ground dries up. Anyway to prevent this?

I would be inclined to use a cast in place concrete substrate. My thinking is; I have better control over dimensions during construction and over time, I should experience less settling/undulation of The brick surface. Also, much less labor to install. Concrete is relatively cheap.
    Anything wrong with my approach?

so by using a stone dust pack and stone dust leveling goes against ICPI standard, you can achieve the same results with the sand and 57 (3/4) stone mix and leveling sand, the reason why the sailor course didn't held up is because you didn't have an edge restraint
