I like the variety of comments on this. The work done is fine and will last. I agree that putting down fabric in the mud will make the gravel last longer, and compacting the gravel more times in thinner layers will compact it more. But the work is good and normal.
No geo textile? It's recommended by icpi for any type of clay soil, but regardless of soil composition, it stops the migration of aggregate into the soil over time. The soil composition only determines how fast migration will happen.
6 inch depth of crush and run is recommended for a standard walk way. 3 inches then compact. Add another 3 and compact again. For anything that has heavy traffic like a driveway. It's suppose to be 12 inches but still done in 3 inch increments for uniform compaction. He also didn't put down geotextile. Which is the icpi standard. It helps mitigate the migration of stone over time.
the only issue i have with this as a professional hardsacper of nearly two decades is that you used no fabric to isolate that stone. Use at least 4oz black permeable fabric. not cheap crap from menards or nothing like you did. surrounding soil will contaminate that rock system
As a fellow horoscope was 25 years experience you don't need any fabric up under your pavers that's going to retain and hold water in the fabric and keep it moist drainage rock is just fine they're doing it right. Never use any type of filter fabric on anything. It's a hold back in time for water drainage. This coming from the institute of ICPI certification of hardscapes.
I need to do this! 1940s, they poured concrete up against house front. Have post/sill rot. Obviously need to fix that but I’m afraid to pull that concrete walkway up. There is settling and my water/gas lines are 6’ or so beneath. Would a jackhammer cause enough vibration to damage? (CBYD aside) Are y’all in New England? lol. ❤
I have to be in in the Hardscape business for over 30 years I can honestly say that this is not the right materials that you use for a paver walkway base.
And you’ve been doing it wrong it appears. 3/4” clean stone for base and 3/8” stone for bedding is exactly what’s recommended and required now. You must not like drainage
@@Toronto6ix It’s pretty much 90 percent compacted once it goes down. But it will help it that extra 10 percent and will leave a flatter cleaner surface to work with. I typically use dense grade gravel which will absolutely compact

Hard to compact such a deep layer of gravel. I would suggest road base and compact it in two inch layers.
clear stone is near 90% compaction when you simply dump it so "seating" the stone with a plate compactor is fine.

@davidg9401 for sidewalks we always use a crush mix 50% ¾gravel and 50%limestone mix minimum of 5" compacted you should never have an issue
pavers always move.....
So does everything else including concrete
