The Plymouth GTX is an automobile introduced as the Belvedere GTX in 1967 by the Plymouth division. It was positioned as a mid-sized upscale-trimmed performance muscle car through the 1971 model year.
The GTX was based on the Belvedere, and was differentiated by a blacked out grille and special rear fascia, fiberglass simulated hood scoops with optional racing stripes, a chrome "pop-open" fuel filler cap, and a tachometer mounted on the center console.[1]
The GTX was positioned as a "gentleman's muscle car".[2] Standard was Plymouth's 440 cu in (7.2 L) V8 engine called the "Super Commando 440" rated at 375 hp (280 kW). Optional was Chrysler's 426 cu in (7.0 L) Hemi. A heavy duty suspension system was also standard.
Chrysler introduced major changes in the design of the 1968 model Plymouth B-bodies and the GTX was given a completely new look. A new hourglass body replaced the previous rectilinear design. The high performance 440 was standard in the GTX as was the TorqueFlite automatic transmission, while it was an extra cost option in the Road Runner. The GTX used the Sport Satellite trim and was offered in two body styles, a two-door convertible and a two-door hardtop (no B-pillar). All featured dual horizontal "racing stripes" on the lower sides ending with a GTX emblem ahead of the rear wheel openings.
The GTX was positioned to be an upscale model of the Plymouth Road Runner by adding luxury to performance.[3] The new budget performance version of the Belvedere featured the new 383 cu in (6.3 L) "Super Commando" V8 (renamed the "Road Runner 383"). It also had less insulation and comfort items, which reduced weight and kept it in the low price field.
In 1969, the GTX's sales dropped when the Road Runner was also offered in a convertible body style. The GTX received minor cosmetic changes to the tail lights and grille, as well as the side marker lights. An optional "Air Grabber" hood (standard on Hemi-engined cars) featured functional openings on both sides of the hood that were controlled from the dash.[4]
The 1969 GTX had standard black lower-body side paint in place of the previous stripes. The standard 440 V8 was still rated at 375 hp (280 kW). This was the last year that the convertible model was available on the GTX. Total production was 701 GTX convertibles in 1969. Of those, eleven were equipped with the 426 Hemi; four were 4-speeds and seven had TorqueFlite automatics.
The 1970 GTX received a minor redesign with a new grille and rear taillights. Sales were low as the car did not look much different from the Road Runner. Stylists made the lines smoother, and a "power bulge" hood was introduced, as well as non-functional rear-brake air scoops. The convertible body style was no longer available. The Air Grabber hood returned, but instead of having two narrow openings running length-wise as in 1969, it had one opening scoop located on the power bulge. The GTX was available with the standard 440 four-barrel carburetor. Optional were the 440+6 barrel (three 2-barrel carburetors) and the 426 Hemi. In keeping with the GTX marketing strategy, the 1970 model included many standard features.
The B-body was redesigned for 1971 and featured rounded "fuselage" styling with a raked windshield, hidden cowl, and a loop-type front bumper around a deeply inset grille and headlights. This was the final year for the GTX as a stand-alone model. The convertible body style was dropped.
Engine choices were 440 four-barrel, 440 with three two-barrels (Six Pack), and 426 Hemi. Emission restrictions such as lower compression ratios and faster-acting choke operation lowered the base 440 output by 5 hp (3.7 kW), to 370 hp (280 kW). The 440 Six Barrel was down to 385 hp (287 kW), but the Hemi was still rated at 425 hp (317 kW). Due partly to rising insurance rates on muscle cars, sales were low. There were less than 3,000 units produced in 1971.
For 1972 through 1974, any Road Runner ordered with the optional 440 was renamed Road Runner GTX and included the badging of both previous models.
The only other performance luxury model in Plymouth's lineup was the full-size Sport Fury GT, built on the C-Body platform. The GT was added to the lineup in 1970. - Авто та транспорт
Man, I wish I had an ounce of your talent. I can never get my weathering/wear and tear to come out right. I love the way you get your wheels washed. Mine comes out aweful. Not to mention your color choices! Wow! Hats off to you on all your builds!
Hey Chris, I know this build was a year ago but it popped up when I did a 1969 GTX search.
I got this kit September 2021 and it’s my next build. The last couple builds I’ve done have had some engine compartment details, ect.
After watching your easy going build of this kit I decided to take it easy and build this kit the HPI guy way.
Just wanted to thank you for encouraging all us model builders to “build it how we want it”
👍👍😎😎
Just keep having FUN, you got it!
Thank God the exhaust lines arent molded all the way back, thats a life saver
YES YES YES YES.... I have 2 of this kit and haven't opened it yet. The GTX doesn't get the credit it deserves because it's not a cuda, charger, or challenger but these things equipped with the correct factory parts were absolute BEAST. THANK YOU
Totally agree!
Just wanted to say Thank you for your videos, in my opinion they are the absolute best model building videos out there. You give great tips and you address known and unknown problems, the biggest part you address is that it doesn't have to be perfect because it's yours to make it whatever. And 1 of the biggest reason I love your video are there is no politics and your are having fun
Really been enjoying your model assembly videos. You have struck a very good balance between speed and fidelity. Never thought rattle cans could look so good. Thank you for providing great content during lockdown-2020. 👍😁
Thank you very much!
That purple metallic is spectacular, highlighted by your choice of a white stripe.
Enjoyed tour discussion of overspray on the chassis. Make your model tell a story!
Sharp lookin’ streeter! I always enjoy your uploads - very pleasant and informative - tips and tricks I can use every time. Big thanks!
Awesome, thank you!
Wonderful color
I don’t know if you know this or not but on your flat black parts if you’re going for a dark metal look take some powdered graphite on a cotton swab a rub it on the part you want that metal look it works incredibly well.
Thanks for another awesome build.
Yup, using that on a figure build right now.
Awesome job, love the color Thank you for sharing. I wanted to give a shout out to the person whom gave the idea for sanding the tires, Genius.... Thank you. Keep building everyone and remember to keep smiling and have fun. Keep yourself, family, and friends safe and healthy.
It was a great tip, I requested the best tip for tires on the FB page and was not disappointed!
I remember building the '68 Roadrunner version of this kit as a kid in the 90's. Was my favorite build. Cool trip down memory lane
Thanks!
Looks like a really nice kit to have. You did an excellent job of building it!
Thanks a bunch!

Great Job My Friend!
It looks ! " All Go! Not JUST All Show "
You got that right!
Love me some purple Mopars, and I love cars with some MEAT on the back.
Such an awesome build.
Thanks 👍
Your videos are the best! This kit brings back a lot of memories. My best friend had the same car in high school, except his was grey primer and had a highly modified 440 magnum! I can still smell the burnt rubber! 😎🤘☠️
Thanks for watching!
Good build. Nice work with the detailing.
Glad you like it!
This brings back some memories.. My dad had a 68 Road Runner which was kind of similar to this 69 GTX...
He bought it about a year after he finished his service in Vietnam...
Nice job Chris. Love those muscular MOPARS.
Thanks 👍
Awesome looking build Chris, great job, love the color. Rick
Thanks a bunch!
Super cool!!! Great work as always!!
Thanks again!
Real nice build, I like that it is a pro street. Would have looked good with a matte black hood too and some white shoe polish numbers on the windshield for the car number and et. Guess Ill have to get one and try a build of my own now. I really like your evidence of the original paint color, good call there. Enjoyed the video a lot, thanks for sharing it. Be well.
Thanks Norman!
Nice I built it back in the 90s they added parts to it and it was a 69 roadrunner minus the gtx trim both are great
Didn't have the custom gauge panel or the edelbrock air cleaners
Looks like a pretty nice kid turned out real good
Thanks man!
Sweet build love the gtx one of my favorite muscle cars
Same here!
Pro street? More like pro- fairgrounds, then pro-barn. Lotsa those cars are coming out of storage now. You nailed it by calling it '90s.. nice work!
Thanks Rick!
That looks amazing, I really love the color. Keep up the great work and Rust In Peace.
Thanks Chopper!
Sweet Dripping Styrene Goodness Brother Chris!
Right on!
Very nice color combination! Great job.
Glad you like it!
Really nice GTX!...Keep the builds coming!

Great choice of colour similar to plum crazy one of my favourite colours.👍👍
Mine too!
Man your videos have helped me so much become a better modeler absolutely great videos Man keep up the great work
Hello sir. Thank you for all your great vids. They inspire me and I have really learned alot. I dont want to seem like a jerk but that is a chrome electric fan. m sure you figured that out. Only reason I know is because I just built a similar kit. Please keep posting the reviews and please post some new tech info.
Yes that is covered in the video.
Hi Chris l was looking forward to this one.l still have my original one from the late 80 s.I liked how this one was designed just for pro stock with those awesome rear tires. Your version turned out really nice and thanks again Chris
You and me both!
Why am I Thirsty For Grape juice 🤔🤔 LOL, It's Another Masterpiece of Mighty Mopar Muscle AND 1 More Kit I Gotta Get !! Thanks For Sharing Sir, Stay Safe n Healthy n God Bless You and All Yours.
Thanks Gary!
sweet old school muscle love the slicks.
Thanks!
looks awesome my friend! i love hotrods
Me too!
Beautiful model!
Thank you! Cheers!
The Mopar guys will tell you the firewall, and inner wheel wells should be body color. LOL! Cool kit.
Yup, and if I was worried about a factory perfect day one restoration I'd do so. Thanks!
Very nice car. I never tried work with 1/25 scale
You should!
Nice GTX Chris and a great lookin build looks like a decent kit by AMT
Thanks 👍
Another killer build and the purple metallic is the chef's kiss of paint choice for any GTX. Modelers, take note: leave off-white basecoat for 2019 Toyota Corollas, not classic Detroit muscle.
Thanks for watching!
Great color 👌 great build
Thank you! Cheers!
Pretty. I have the stock version of that GTX when AMT was an ERTL property. I hope it's in a similar shape to this, 'cuz we all know that Round2 had to fix and clean LOTS of the molds.
I hope so too
And you got quite the steady hand
Purple Pavement Eater, nice build Chris.
Thank you!
Nice build as usual. I like your "get down to business" style of building. And an aside........I was secretly hoping this kit would have had the "Cammer" Hemi option that was in the Coronet Pro Street kit. I was assuming they just changed body between kits.
Cool, thanks!
Awesome job 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
Awsome build buddy....color fits the car....
I think so too!
Cool i love Plymouth cars but my fav would be the Domination version of the superird bid wing on it think was nass race car 👍, Keith 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Thanks for keeping the videos flowing through tough times..
Glad you like them!
I enjoy watching your review and builds, keep up the great work
Much appreciated!
Oh my god I love this car.
Thanks!
A very 😎 looking build!..
Thanks Thomas, as always!
A lot of nicely detailed parts with this kit too!!
Sweet build. It’s always a pleasure to watch the spray can master at work. And the stories top it off.
Glad you enjoyed it! More to come!
A big hunk of Detroit muscle. The color looks like Grape Crush. Stay safe Chris!
Thanks you too!
I built the dirty donnies version years back. It had the experimental dual overhead cam cylinder heads. Looks like I'll be building another gtx. As always beautiful work!
Very cool!
I truly appreciate your work and all the hard work you put in every week excellent. What I would like to see with your channel is all the parts bits and decals that you have to go off script and do some customizations truly using your imagination to create something wild to create an exquisite hot rod, some exotic sports car arson mean looking off-road vehicle, but truly using your imagination I think it could come up with something amazing 😺✌️
I've always loved building from the box, but maybe some day I'll have time to kitbash something.
Very nice looking build
Thank you kindly!
Hi Chris. Great job as always! How long do you typically wait after priming parts before putting a topcoat/different color on? I know the Rustoleum primers dry pretty fast. Thanks!
Less then 30 minutes. The process goes really fast.
Great work Chris are the rims 2 different sizes?
I enjoyed watching this one. I've got bits and pieces of those 68/69 plymouth kits in my parts that I've collected over the years. Looks like I have enough to build one now without having to buy a new kit.just use what I already have..Im starting with a 1/25th 69 gtx convertible body that I just converted to a hard top using a roof I cut off a parts 1/24th 70 roadrunner body shell. I cut/scaled it down to fit and will make it look like a vinyl top instead to bend it in better at the cut and splice lines. Thinking about just building it as the sage green version of yours before the guy painted it.
Rock on!
Good looking car Chris love the color choice, just another model I have to get 👍
Go for it!
Its nice to 👀 other model collectors out there.that watch.at least modeling is still out there.some Wal-Mart's do sell model cars &trucks.during this viras thing.take care ❤ 4-26-20
Thanks for the info!
Really nice build there Chris, luv the color but luv that year even more buddy! Any car made in 69 is a beast... Thanks for sharing and I will have this car real soon. Also thanks for being so positive people really need to hear that at this time in life. God bless...
Right on!
I’m working on a kit my self
Love it! The decals makes it stand out
Thanks!
This has been encouraging for me!! I have an AMT 70 supeebee that's almost identical I'm actually painting it plumb crazy also!! I like that you make a story for each too !! Keep it up!!
Go for it! Thanks!
The glue I really like is the Revell Practa Pro.
Whatever gets the job done!
Holy cow Chris ,too bad you live too far ,I would love to meet you and talk model kit,you got so much good idea
Thanks a lot!
Again this brings back memories of the 68 Road Runner my Dad had back in the day...
A friend of mine had something very similar to Center Lines..Cragar Super Tricks that were gold and chrome on his V8 Vega.
Cool!
Cool kit
Thanks!
Hey bro, I love your vids and you build some awesome creations but my friend, lol, I think its time to clean your filter in your spray booth! I dont want to see ya choke to death from the blocked filter lol! Anyway, keep up the great work !!!
Thanks for watching!
Enjoy the builds and tips. Do you ever wire your motors?
😎 metalflake paint job!
Thank you very much
No worries!
Hi I'm Dave from NY. Love your show. Keep up the awesome work. A question that I have is when glueing the chrome parts. Do you scrap off the chrome for adhesion. I'm a minimal builder. Have about 50 to 60 kits in my collection. Retirement fun. I have a double kit with 2 dragsters don the snake perhdonme. Funny car and top fuel. Have you ever seen one . I may possibly be able to get some pics of it. Anyway. Love the channel 😍 . Thank you. Dave
Thanks for watching!
I'm sure the kits were sold as a set in the past, that was common.
Nice job
Thank you! Cheers!
Just found this build. Can you explain more about how to paint the wheels to give the realistic look? What flat clear did you spray them with.
Great build, nice review of the kit. Wonderful color choice.
Thank you kindly!
Another awesome job, sir! Why don't we ever see you (hands excepted)?
My face doesn't build a model, my hands do.
