    What people forget is that neither Kuss or Vingegaard were meant to ride la vuelta. Therefore the giro / vuelta double would have been Rog’s primary goals, then last minute jonas and Sepp are drafted in…..I would be pretty annoyed too, wouldn’t anyone?

      Maybe it was Jumbo’s way to push Roglic out, knowing he would be upset. Or knowing he was leaving, not allowing him to win. Not sure on the timing of his departure decision.

    I dont understand an idea of "gifting" a grand tour to someone because he was helpful earlier... Kuss was paid for helping and that's his role. I like him, but he is just too weak to win grand tours. Roglic is quite old, and it is not sure how many chances he will have to win another GC. I would bet Vuelta 2023 was his last chance to win a grand tour. So... definitely, I would be angry as well if I would be forced to give it away to Kuss. Jonas is another story... he is younger, and he domiantes at TdF. He can afford to give away Vuelta. I am surprised that people dont understand why Roglic was angry.

    No, no, no on moving up to 8-9 kgs. Part of why we have some differences is that there still "climbing bikes" and "aero bikes". Manufacturers can't make a bike that looks like a time trial bike that hits the weight limit. You pretty much could do that, and all bikes would be at the limit and super aero....and look the same.

    Absolutely wrong about raising the minimum weight limit. If anything they should lower it. Technology as gotten so much better in the last 10 years. This is easily doable and would give us light weight aero bikes.

    Big Roglic fan and still am. I don't blame him a bit if he was angry about having to ride for Sepp. At the beginning of the season it was announced that Roglic would not ride the Tour because Jonas was to be the clear #1 there. No debate, he was the defending champ. Then Roglic's season goals I believe became the Giro and a 4th win in Spain. He prepared for that all year only to have plans change when Sepp managed to get the red jersey. If Sepp was truly the stronger rider, fine. Race for him. But I think it's clear that he wasn't.

    As much as I love Rogla the argument for him winning the Vuelta is rendered completely moot with Jonas participating. If JV had truly given the riders free reign it would've ended with Jonas as champion - he's a better climber PLUS he had additional motivation to win for his best friend Nathan midway thru the race. JV took their time with it but in the end they made the right decision - as did Roglic leaving the team. If he's as good as he thinks he still is we're gonna find out now that he's with Bora & is able to freely compete with his former teammates.

    Accusing Roglic of not being a team player is a bit unfair. Some people seem to conveniently forget he (while being badly bruised and beaten) helped to break Pogacar for Vinge at TDF.

    • @GregaJuvancic
      @GregaJuvancic 5 місяців тому

      The only selfish and not team player there was Vinge. First he attacked and won a stage "for his kid", then he attacked again and won "for his friend". All while his teammate was wearing the leader jersey with a comfortable leader over the others. Im surprised he hasnt attacked and won one for his dog, cat, goldfish... All Roglic did was went for a stage winfor himself as well and Vinge covered him instead of staying with and helping Kuss.

  • @dawnc5797
    @dawnc5797 5 місяців тому

    Jumbo-Visma were put in a hard position when Sepp got the red jersey and no other team took it. You never ever attack your teammate who is in the leader jersey so JV needed another team to take it so Roglic could get it back and win.
    A perfect storm was brewing on TV and behind the scenes you better believe Richard Plugge and the main sponsors realized what they had, quite by accident. Their goal at the start of the season was to win all three GTs with Jonas and Primoz and make history but with Sepp in the red jersey suddenly they have an even more exciting and a record to likely never be broken. Win all three GTs with three different riders.
    If anyone was being 'handled' it was the riders and it was by team management and sponsors. Sure, the emotions of Jonas, Primoz and Sepp were real but they weren't against each other until they were put in that position.
    How people still can't see this is beyond me.

    Interesting your concept of leadership. Leadership in many spheres does not mean I always get what I want. Ironically effective leadership always includes showing respect and gratitude for team members who have consistently contributed to the success of the team. Ask yourself, “Would Sepp Kuss be as likely to give an extraordinary effort in support of Roglic in the future had Roglic taken the red jersey from him?” I think Primoz went to Trump University to learn leadership skills.

He has elevated everyone's game that has ever played with or against and is a true leader who calls it how it is but supports his teammates. Not some insecure primadonna who cannot celebrate his teammate's accomplishments and allow them to shine when they have the ball.

So everyone let Kuss go and he got the red jersey and now Roglic can't race the tour and he entire season is wasted, and in a contract year??!??!?!

      I think there were more dynamics within the team. Sure Roglic wants to lead, Vingegard who was ahead of Roglic on time, wasn't going to let Roglic beat him - Vingegard was the best climber in that race and most likely would've beat everyone if so inclined. The issue as I understood it. was that Kuss had the best time and as the final result indicated he was able to hold the lead to the finish. The ethical question broached was does your own team cannibalize the race leader - historically this wouldn't be the case. IMHO Contador is the one who "readjusted" the way the peloton handles sportsmanship.
      Having said all this I do understand Roglic was going for a 4th Vuelta win so he had plenty of reasons to go for it. AS mentioned above I doubt he would've beat Vingegard anyway.
      As for the Sepp Kuss leadership question - he didn't enter that race as a team leader, but as a superdomestique, so he didn't assume the leader's position until well into the race. Once he was in the lead he was torn between being a good team mate and being the leader, understandably he expected the others to be good teammates in the way that he has supported them throughout his career. This season he will have some opportunities to showcase his leadership abilities - the Volta a Catalunya maybe a test for him - I believe he is sitting in 7th place currently (good but not great), about 1minute 10 seconds down from Michael Landa in 2nd place. Barring a crash or mechanical nobody is going to touch Pogacar for the win.

    A higher minimum weight limit wont hurt performance too much. That’s effectively only a 2kg difference and from a power to weight ratio difference it’s only 0.22 W/kg difference. The big benefit to the consumer is that it will lower the cost of entry to the sport to a aluminium bike to be competitive with a carbon fibre bike. It’s a good idea for the economic climate the world is in.

  • @stuartmisfeldt3068
    @stuartmisfeldt3068 6 місяців тому

    6.8 is easily reached for smaller frames, going to 7.5 would allow for larger frames to meet the minimums without compromising engineering. Smaller riders will be at a disadvantaged, but remember, until the advent or aluminum and carbon frames, most pros road on 8-9 kg frames and usually with small freewheels, not the 30-34 teeth of today. These bikes required muscle to climb in a low of 40 gear inches.

    I don't blame Roglic at all.
    The only reason Kuss had the red jersey is because the other teams could not worry about all 3 of the Jumbo riders, and were focused on Roglic and Vind. Expecting Roglic to just give Kuss charity and give up his chance when he can probably count on 2-3 fingers the number of years left where he even has a chance to win a GT is asking too much imo.
    Kuss used the "nice guy/ victim" deal to manipulate things for a win for himself. Now let's see him defend his title!
    Spoiler alert: He can't do it, not in a million years. Even Vind won't fall for "I am such a nice guy so let me win!" for a second year.

    I slightly disagree with the Michael Jordan analogy. He has famously given the winning shot to other players, like Steve Kerr. As far as roglic is concerned, it was clear he wanted to take the race from Kuss, instead of trying to help him. It wouldn’t have killed him to actually be a great teammate and pay back the guy that has ridden for him. Jonas, at least, seemed genuine in his ultimate decision to support Sepp. Primoz has never come across as ever being happy for him.

  • @matttilley8620
    @matttilley8620 5 місяців тому

    I know this will come across as overly cynical to some, but the "betrayal" that occurred at the Vuelta was largely a construct to distract journalists from asking questions about why Lotto Visma were so dominant. Remember there were a few days near the end where Kuss had the lead and there was nothing to talk about; there were no interesting narratives happening. It was just another dominant win. Once Kuss took the jersey, there was no doubt that he would keep it. Sure, his teammates might have been chomping at the bit knowing they could drop him in a heartbeat, and despite being "attacked" in the fog, he managed to claw his way back. That's a fantastic narrative to describe. Much more interesting than talking about doping.

    • @VancouverHeartHealth

      respectfully disagree. Kuss earned the victory, it was not gifted. Cycling is a team sport, and Sepp was in the best position to win, and should be supported by the team, just as Sepp supported the team for many years. Roglic and Jonas were no doubt stronger, but that is not the point. In the end, the right thing happened, so all is fine. Cycling legends are created through wins, but coloured by how they ride and carry themselves. There are leadership and life lessons here.

      You’re actually wrong OP. The team exists to give the sponsors exposure. The sponsors pay the salaries. The sponsors can exert their power of the pocket book and tell the manager/DS/riders we want this guy to win. PERIOD. It was a good strategy to have Kuss win the race for the sponsor’s goals - exposure and for a majority public/fans who wanted to see Kuss rewarded for his work for the team over that season of GTs and years prior. Now to the culture of cycling. It is fairly common for a team to select a leader prior to the race and ride for that person or once the race has begun and someone shows that they are stronger (almost always happens in the beginning of the race, though, not the last week). There are plenty of historical examples of the team riding for a leader who may not be the strongest on the road: Lemond and Hinault, Contador and Armstrong, Froome and Wiggins are examples that come to mind.
