I'm not a big fan of the Lopez family, but his accomplishments can't be ignored. Great talent, and that he's still fighting is something to be commended.
I did taekwondo when i was young and this is the sport that i loved . Not the taekwondo this days it sucks they are looking just for pointe and they dont have fun fighting
people can sit there and talk bad about Lopez all they want but he dominated his sport for so long. You can say he isnt a real fighter and this and that but he is the best at what he does. How many of us can say we are the best at something. He could have retired on top but he loves his sport. He is 37 and still kicking ass. Tae Kwon!
Trust me bro...it's not like you think. I've fought in TKD and now train in MMA. I see the hole's in the game of TKD, but I see holes in every fight sport. The nature of the rules is what dictates how fighters fight. If an MMA fighter wanted to fight a TKD guy using TKD rules they woudl get smoked! Just try blocking all those kicks, and some how throw your own attacks too. On the flip side a TKD fighter would get pummled in most other types of combats sports. We have to respect them all.
What bashers don't seem to understand about Olympic style Taekwondo is that no serious or high level competitor thinks of it as a form of brawling or street fighting. It is first and foremost a SPORT. The reason I personally love it is because it allows you to ignore what is practical and focus on a highly strategic game based primarily around relatively aesthetically pleasing kicking techniques. It's also a lower pressure sport with less risk of injury.
4 world championships and an Olympic gold medal. He fought throughout the 80's and was always victorious. And with all of his success, he was and still remains humble and kind. He is a true champion in every sense of the world.
when I was practicing tkd in cerritoes. ca. there was a master steven choi, who came to visit out studio. He was amazing! He was so dang fast and powerful, no one stood a chance against this man. I am not saying he was the best, but he made this guy look like snoop dog in a sprinting race.
Now, Taekwondo as a martial art was something developed in the 50s through the unification of the styles of various Korean martial arts experts. It is much broader than the sport, encompassing grappling and hand techniques in addition to kicking techniques. It's further employed by the Korean military as their primary form of training in unarmed combat. It's hard for me to say what this traditional form of TKD is like because I don't practice it, and neither do most Taekwondo practitioners.
As we say in boxing, if you were never defeated, you never fought enough guys who counted. Being undefeated is not the mark of greatness. Losing and coming back to beat the guy who beat you is. The best fighters in all fighting sports have lost at least once.
i think hes a lot better than the rest of the tkd fighters because he keeps his balance theres a lot of tkd fighters that go for the head shot but trip over there own feet right afterwards this guy always seems to have his balance in check
i agree completely. he's good, his kicks are crazy fast and powerful, but his form is all over the place. don't get me wrong, i'd be scared as hell to go up against him in a sparring match, but he doesn't cover himself well and his hands don't offer much for attack or defense. still, those damn roundhouse kicks...
HE HAS A SCHOOL IN OREGON IF ANYONE IS INTERESTED IN TRAINING UNDER HIM. I BELIEVE ITS CALLED CHAMPION TAEKWONDO OR WORLD CHAMPION TAEKWONDO. HE DOESN'T OWN IT, BUT HE'S A MASTER THERE. THE GUY IS FREAKING AWESOME. SAMSUNG TEAM, KOREAN NATIONAL TEAM, DONG A UNIVERSITY TEAM. WORLD CHAMPION, OLYMPIC CHAMPION. ABSOLUTELY DESTROYED EVERYONE IN HIS PATH. HE WON WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS WITHOUT EVEN TRYING. PASCAL GENTIL WAS THE ONLY PERSON TO LAND A HEAD SHOT ON HIM ONCE. THAT WAS IT.
Steven is good, I know him personally. But if you notice he had a very set fighting style back then: cut kick then counter, or axe to the head. Those were his two major point kicks, other than hit the person with a flurry of kicks to score, because he was VERY fast when he was young. Now, in his mid 30s, he has lost alot of that speed, which is why he didn't medal in this Olympics. Aaron Cook knocked him out cold in 2009, if I remember right... so he is no longer the best around anymore.
In summation. Olympic style Taekwondo is a fun and exciting sport that requires a great deal of training, athleticism, skill and discipline. If you recognize it for what it is, you wouldn't be engaged in pointless bashing. Thank you, and goodnight T.T
hmmm i do TKD too, this guy is freaking crazy, but one thing i noticed is that any kicks that did get in could have been blocked if his arms werent either out to the side or lodged in the other guys jaw, no t that the second point matters but yeah
Andy...I hear you! If it wasn't a style that I practiced since I was young I woudl think the same thing. I'm just so used to seeing it. I think the same thing about Karate forms (tricking). The thing is...if you go into a high level TKD match with your hands up like a kickboxer you'll get KOed! The rules of the game dictate the players stance, movement, etc... I think any martial artist that becomes too "stylized" is not going to be effective. Take what works and throw away the rest..
Aaron Cook has never even medaled in one of the big championships. (World/Olympics) As for his knockout of Lopez, review the fight. Cook grabs Lopez's dobok pinning Lopez's left arm then throws a closing kick. The closing kick forces Lopez to drop his head to the right since he couldn't use the pinned left arm. As Cook is falling to the mat he throws a wild kick and catches Lopez on the chin. Cook will never be in the mix when discussing the best of all time.
Give him time. There are guys out there who have never lost - like Calzaghe. But then he never fought Ottke, never fought Michalczeksi, didn't fight RJJ until Roy was WAY past his best days. There is no such thing as an unbeatable fighter. You fight enough and someone's style is going to trouble you. It's inevitable. No one man beats all comers. Fighting doesn't work that way.
Steven Lopez is a distant second to Kuk Hyun Chung who completely dominated in the 1980s. Chung is the ONLY man to fight his whole career without loss including 4 worlds and an olympic gold in Seoul before retiring. I beliece Mr. Lopez was knocked out during his career? I've seen both fight and am confident that Chung was the better Tae Kwon Doist. Today's fighters are extremely one dementional. Roundhouse kicks are all they know.
with all due respect, as much as i have utmost respect to master lopez, my question to the op, why is it you keep repeating steven's match and kicks like, 10 times???? i strongly believe all his matches, videos are enough to last more than 10 minutes of compilation of his kicks. and u decided to repeat same kick same match like 10 times. it really annoyed me. thanks
all that says is that you have been to a lot of tournaments that have had a lot of easy fighters. Wait till your fourteen seventeen and get to do full head contact it gets much harder trust me I know I go to Junior Olympics every year.
looks to be WTF ( world tae kwon do federation ) which is said to be the south Korean style as far as style is concerned but it also appears to be competing all over so you can fix a single organisation to it. hope this helps
Steven Lopez: number of hits >>>>>>>>> points achieved normal fighter: number of hits >>> points achieved mature fighter: number of hits > points achieved reason: Too much aggression case closed :D
Nice random, irrelevant comment there. But I still think it's down to the individual, not the martial art. I can't speak for WTF TKD but in ITF we learn just as much practical self defense and fighting systems as we do the cool spinning kicks and sport aspects.
@TheTerrorUforgot that's funny man. I've got MMA guys hating on me for liking TKD and I've got TKD guys hating on me for liking MMA. That's right were I like it :)
Steven lopez was already Olympic champion 2time world champion when he was 24 or 25. Forgive me if i am ignorant if tazegul won the olympics in 2012 i or not i stop following taekwondo a long time ago
I think Steve is great but these are not good clips to show...he does a lot of kicks below the belt and pushing which he gets away with a lot. Leg kicks are effective but are not allowed in these comps. He is still one of the greats in TKD.
The man is good I beat him tho in a colorado Olympic qualification Mike shaw sahn tkd... I shattered my knee or I'd still be throwing some feet!! Glad you stayed healthy steven and always remember sahn and the martinez bros
i agree,he is definetly the most proven fighter, but in my opinion moon dae sung, servet tazegul and aaron cook are better.cook will just become better he is only 21 yrs old and will improve his skill even more.
Also, the fighters of years gone by never felt they needed to raise their hands to help out the judges. This is not in keeping with the spirit of the sport.
I've been into combat sports for quite a while now as I'm in college, and started Judo and Taekwondo when I was 4 (I also wrestled throughout high school) so please don't just say that I'm some internet troll. Obviously Steven is a very high level athlete and Taekwondo fighter but I believe the disrespect he shows to his opponent is completely unacceptable. It doesn't matter if he is a "nice guy" off the mats if he behaves this way during every match. He probably celebrates more during every match than I have ever done throughout my entire life. I truly admire his skill but It's such a shame that has such a huge lack for humility. Honestly, slapping your opponents ass?? That's not only disrespectful towards his opponent, but also towards the whole martial arts community as a whole. Is this the kind of individual we want to represent us? This is just disappointing...
haha i doubt he slapped him for disrespect but you got to understand that eventhough is a sport, they are still trying to kick your head off; and they can. you got to have attitude as a fighter.
Francis Regala he is ultra competitive. He is American after all lol they're a cocky bunch. But seriously, at this level, you are in the zone man!! every point is to be celebrated, and MANY athletes carry on like that, not just Lopez.
Don't most Tae Kwon Do Tournaments give out gold colored medals regardless of place? At least the ones I've competed in do... (including a few state tournaments)
I'm not a big fan of the Lopez family, but his accomplishments can't be ignored. Great talent, and that he's still fighting is something to be commended.

How many of us can say we are the best at something. He could have retired on top but he loves his sport. He is 37 and still kicking ass. Tae Kwon!
This is true, he was the only non-Korean fighter who dominated in his weight class in the era when Koreans literally dominated the sports
Excelents words!!!

Fought through the 90's.
I’ve actually had Lopez coach me
Steven Lopez is very good player
I have the greatest respect for you
언제나 응원하겠습니다.!!
One insane thing that lopez do,, he play at 2000,2004,2008,2012, and 2016 olympic games,,
He Punches!!! Thank God someone in the sport does. And he does it like he means it.
If you could upload those old USTU matches in their regular uncut version from 2000 Olympic Trials... you'd be a legend...
Lopez won Gold in 2000, 2004, and Bronze in 2008.....The man doesn't only know how to score a point, but he is a FIGHTER, he hurts you in the process.
The best days of Olympic style TKD right there!
he has a great stamina and strength
El Mehdi .Hakkou He was SUPER FIT!!!
That's my goal bro, welterweight division here i come
I really think that he was the best taekwondo fighter of our time when we had the regular system and hoguns, but now there is so many better fighters!
when I was practicing tkd in cerritoes. ca. there was a master steven choi, who came to visit out studio. He was amazing! He was so dang fast and powerful, no one stood a chance against this man. I am not saying he was the best, but he made this guy look like snoop dog in a sprinting race.
Complete taekwondo, thanks Steve Lopez
Hey Steven I got a picture with u and a signature with u at the junior Olympics!:) i know u will do great at the Olympics and I will pray for u:)
You are good men!! this video is entertaining : )
Now, Taekwondo as a martial art was something developed in the 50s through the unification of the styles of various Korean martial arts experts. I've got those old videos...that's how I made this one. I'll work on getting them up. I'd like to be a legend!
As we say in boxing, if you were never defeated, you never fought enough guys who counted. Being undefeated is not the mark of greatness. Losing and coming back to beat the guy who beat you is. The best fighters in all fighting sports have lost at least once.
Nice one 1.00 three kicks, moving up the body to a kick under the chin, really good.
Happy Birthday Steven Lopez!...
i think hes a lot better than the rest of the tkd fighters because he keeps his balance theres a lot of tkd fighters that go for the head shot but trip over there own feet right afterwards this guy always seems to have his balance in check
Hello youtube anyone have Steven Lopez's first fight of the 1996 USTU Nationals ??
I’ll check. My brother was a Tx elite here. Went to state, nationals, world and junior Olympics. Maybe we have some footage somewhere.
No, but I fought him in the finals at the 1996 Texas State Championship and lost. Also, lost the video.
Steven Lopez trained in the TKL (Texas Karate League) and i'm training there
+ChaoticPoop no he didnt
There will always be someone better... and the best... don't get knocked out.
You, my friend, have never won an Olympic Gold Medal!
You won an Olympic Medal?
i agree completely. he's good, his kicks are crazy fast and powerful, but his form is all over the place. don't get me wrong, i'd be scared as hell to go up against him in a sparring match, but he doesn't cover himself well and his hands don't offer much for attack or defense. still, those damn roundhouse kicks...
Lopez is the artist of Kicks in TKD.....
Kook Hyun Chung is the the greatest TKD fighter of all time. He was never defeated.
Wow, what an amazing fighter. This is what Tae Kwon Do should look like and not what we see today in the Olympics...anyways, congrats from Iran 🇮🇷
*player
Its not about the Martial art in the fighter, its the fighter in the Martial art. ALL ART ARE THE SAME :)
HE HAS A SCHOOL IN OREGON IF ANYONE IS INTERESTED IN TRAINING UNDER HIM. I BELIEVE ITS CALLED CHAMPION TAEKWONDO OR WORLD CHAMPION TAEKWONDO. HE DOESN'T OWN IT, BUT HE'S A MASTER THERE. Representing
I go to his School
Are you still alive?
Right said bro!The big problem begins from the lack of respect...which comes from the ignorance.
there is no denying that aaron cook is another great of our generation
Steven is good, I know him personally. But if you notice he had a very set fighting style back then: cut kick then counter, or axe to the head. WOW........the kick combo @ 1:00 was NICE!!!
In summation. Olympic style Taekwondo is a fun and exciting sport that requires a great deal of training, athleticism, skill and discipline. If you recognize it for what it is, you wouldn't be engaged in pointless bashing.
Thank you, and goodnight T.T

Is no other tkd fighter with his record so is simple ...he is the BEST!!!
I think that the butt tap at 1:23 looked pretty respectful and affectionate
I LOVE taekwondo old school
We do to!
내가 제일 좋아하는 선수❤
Does anybody know the music name?
(in the video)
The Chemical Brothers - Galvanize
Andy...I hear you! If it wasn't a style that I practiced since I was young I woudl think the same thing. I'm just so used to seeing it. I think the same thing about Karate forms (tricking). What's with all the hate? Just appreciate what there is and if you don't like it, watch something else.
Master David Jordinson RIP the best of his time
wonderfull ^^
I heard the second music that was moroccan ^^ cool
very nice video
Quando o Taekwondo valia a pena assistir...
You can't say that he is the best fighter. You van only say, he is the best fighter in his weight
your the best!
Aaron Cook has never even medaled in one of the big championships. (World/Olympics) As for his knockout of Lopez, review the fight. Exactly!!!
steven lopez
2 olympic gold medals
5 world chap gold medals
Disculapa una pregunta como se llama la segunda cansion de este video esta chida la rola si me pueden dar el nombre porfa
This guy is good, but i wouldn't say he's the best. Many better ones around the world.
What a cannon! Second song name?
who are those songs by ?
Steven Lopez is a distant second to Kuk Hyun Chung who completely dominated in the 1980s. I've seen both fight and am confident that Chung was the better Tae Kwon Doist. Today's fighters are extremely one dementional. Roundhouse kicks are all they know.
he is awsome
What's the second song called?
with all due respect, as much as i have utmost respect to master lopez, my question to the op, why is it you keep repeating steven's match and kicks like, 10 times???? i strongly believe all his matches, videos are enough to last more than 10 minutes of compilation of his kicks. and u decided to repeat same kick same match like 10 times. it really annoyed me.
thanks
That's just the competition rules. The Olympic Committee made them do that. That's why Olympic boxing is much more padded up than pro boxing.
wouldn't say he's the best fighter (for that you'd have to look to boxing or mma) but he's certainly a great athlete
Por fin... un tkd q quiere golpear... no uno q quiere tocar para puntito
agree!
He's a two-time gold medalist and world gold medalist. How does that make him a clown?
all that says is that you have been to a lot of tournaments that have had a lot of easy fighters.
His time is over now. He got clowned in London and KOed before that. He had a great career though.
I don't think anyone could beat Tomaž Barada in his prime.
because aaron cook is also one of the best fighters in the sport if not the best
...Iranian mans are kind people that habit that effort and get star with Limited resources
HE IS GOOD!!
Steven Lopez:
number of hits >>>>>>>>> points achieved
normal fighter:
number of hits >>> points achieved
mature fighter:
number of hits > points achieved
reason:
Too much aggression
case closed :D
super n speed kick in tkd, lv it ^^
@desibomb for the reason that most tkd players are looking for the counter so do not block the kick but look to slide out and kick
I'm one of his students
Did he sexually assault you too?
let's just see if they make 4 olympic games (including london) and win 2 gold medals and a bronze and become 5 time world champions
Nice random, irrelevant comment there. But I still think it's down to the individual, not the martial art. I can't speak for WTF TKD but in ITF we learn just as much practical self defense and fighting systems as we do the cool spinning kicks and sport aspects.
@PsypherDeus Well said! I definitely agree with you!
well....now...steven lopez lost the london 2012 in the first round....so sad
@TheTerrorUforgot that's funny man. I've got MMA guys hating on me for liking TKD and I've got TKD guys hating on me for liking MMA. That's right were I like it :)
Saw him today at my school
1:01 to 1:09 woooohooooo thats beast right there
Ele é uma lenda
Steven lopez was already Olympic champion 2time world champion when he was 24 or 25. Forgive me if i am ignorant if tazegul won the olympics in 2012 i or not i stop following taekwondo a long time ago
All Americans think they're top. Fact being, there's always someone better.
anybody knows the name of this style tkd? or type of org?
I think Steve is great but these are not good clips to show...he does a lot of kicks below the belt and pushing which he gets away with a lot. Leg kicks are effective but are not allowed in these comps. He is still one of the greats in TKD.
