Podcast: Wolves in the Church

  • They’re ravaging the church and devouring the sheep. Yet instead of tracking and expelling these wolves, we’re actually helping-and, in some cases-protecting them!
On this episode of The Roys Report, Coleman Luck, author of 'Day of the Wolf: Unmasking and Confronting Wolves in the Church,' explains why. Dazzled by their ability to pack auditoriums and fill church coffers, Christians often mistake spiritual wolves for spiritual leaders.
He offers criteria for evaluating whether a leader is a shepherd or a wolf. Coleman also describes how to confront a wolf. But he warns-wolves are dangerous. And if you confront one, don’t expect to escape that confrontation without some wounds from the wolf’s attack.
This is a critical discussion for equipping believers to purge the church of its wolves.

I've met many in churches who still support church predators after they are caught. It is sad when the unbelieving world has higher honesty and moral standards.

This is why some such churches are dangerous; the perpetrator is protected, while the victim is punished, esp if he/she/they keep talking about it. Weak leaders around the perpetrator are almost as responsible because they do nothing, or not enough or in the right way. Weak leaders are dangerous leaders. This is why I say that some of these churches have become criminal organisations. Like a spiritual Mafia, with spiritual 'Godfathers!' ⚠️🚫🚫⚠️☢️

That’s what baffles me; when unbelievers have better morals or are able to call out what’s wrong in the church. Granted, all someone needs is a working conscience in these cases but still…how do you treat people so poorly even when surrounded by God’s Word?

@@Marlainasome are false but most are simply deceived sheep. There’s a reason why our Lord calls his followers “sheep”. He understands that most believers will choose to blindly follow the majority rather than making up their own mind. Every Christian starts out as a sheep but the Lord wants us to become snakes😉. Matthew 10:16 “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves”.

I find this topic not well received by most Christians, especially Charismatics, because they have been told they should not touch God's anointed. Wolves are anointed? All that represents wolves are easily seen by any believer who knows the Word well. Sadly, however, there is is great dearth for the Word within the body of Christ, and so when their ears get tickled, they rush into eventual disillusionment, and perhaps apostasy.

Thank you for sharing this helpful information. It perfectly describes the wolf and the pack that I became close to within the "inner circle" leadership of the church that I was a part of while working on staff as one of the "pastors" until the time that "The Pastor" realized that I was not approving of his showmanship and manipulative behavior.
I have been set free from the bondage to what I now deem a cultish church social club. From the moment that I was "Terminated" and lied about until these years since, The Lord has so faithfully confirmed to me that He "did for me what I wouldn't do for myself" by removing me. It was excruciating to be betrayed by the very Pastor that had been interviewed and hired years before by my Husband as head elder and the elder board. We brought on this born wolf who we all faithfully and mistakenly served (until we were able to see the light) and we were all discarded suddenly and unexpectedly and lied about to the rest of the dumb sheep, tares, and wolf pack.
I am somehow refreshed by the truth of your ministry that is bringing to light these wolves in the Christian social clubs that some believe are churches of The Lord Jesus Christ. Please keep shining the light of the Lord's heart on these predators.
Forgiveness is spiritually healing and real. Trusting a wolf is like trusting a cobra.
    Really.
    Signed,
Discarded by "the church wolf pack" in Raleigh...
accepted and deeply loved by The Lord Most High and Jesus my Savior forever.

Lots of wolves are around, and they get a pass from the followers they gather. Sometimes we feel like we have believed that the Holy Spirit has shown us that someone is genuine, and that He inspired their talk or writings, yet they turned out to be frauds. Satan uses this to try to make us question whether God cared about us, and whether there is a Holy Spirit at all. But think about it: sometimes, what moved us was the word of God, and the Holy Spirit uses His own word to do His work. Sometimes, charlatans escape notice for a long time, because they are saying true things, and God uses those things they say in our lives. They say them to conform to expectations, and create the expectation that they can be trusted. God uses His word because, even though the person speaking is a phony, that message of God is more important than the phoniness of the messenger. We read the person's trustworthiness into it, because we want to believe in them; we don't want to believe that this isn't someone we can trust. We want to take for granted that the people up close to us can be trusted. A lot of times, we push away the clues for a long time, preferring to believe we are among friends. More often than not, a wolf will have subtly twisted and corrupted the Bible's message, mixing truth and error, often subtly misquoting the Bible, and it will leave us in a mess, trying to disentangle the good intended by God, from the evil intended by the devil and his false teacher. But we need to always remember that God will not, and did not, deceive us. For very human reasons, we trusted other human beings, and that, sadly, has no guarantee.

Where I find CL most appealing, is when he is speaking about the phenomena associated with where we can make wrong decisions or choices. Where the wrongness of such choices, has an incremental and aggregating effect. (At the 2012 Paralympics in London, I heard a coach speaking about the "aggregation of marginal increments"; and that understanding has stayed with me).
What is distinctive about what CL has to say, seems to me to attach to the extent to which he exposes-to and penetrates these actual life-phenomena. So he's not speaking about them theoretically and at a theological distance; rather he's interfacing with them existentially and ontologically and empistemologically; and its that interfacing which fuels his capacity to continuously articulate perspective on what he is encountering.
JR speaking about getting it right in smaller things, speaks to the same "aggregation of increments", from another safeguarding direction.

Whew a lot of big words here. I guess google will be kept busy to night.
Anyway my husband and I were excommunicated 30 years ago and handed over to Satan for the destruction of our flesh. It was aLovely Village Missions church we helped build. We stood quietly by an elder, who was also a missionary who was falsely accused of child abuse. I have often contemplated writing a book but when you live in the sticks you have no idea where to begin. If only we had known we weren’t the only ones in the world. Headquarters was somewhere in the states and when we wrote letters pleading for help we were just told we were too far away and we would have to cave to local leadership. The charming, handsome,”cool” pastor could do no wrong. It was interesting to see what happened to all the elders who insisted we give them and the pastor our unconditional obedience. It became a huge story even though all of us members were warned sternly not to talk about it. But I was on the board of Christian Women’s Club and people from the neighbouring province came and asked what the trouble in our church was about I was shocked to find later it was none other than the pastor himself who spread the story. It didn’t help that my BIL was on the board. Time has proven we were right but to this day they have not apologized. About a year ago, very sadly the place burned down. Being strictly shunned was perhaps the hardest.
Is there a way your ministry can reach out to remote places or in Canada?? There’s a book called churches that abuse by Ronald M. Enroth. Copyright is 1992 two years before we were so devastated. It and the Lord saved our sanity. But it’s even worse than losing my father had been.

Thank you for that reference to the book(s) by Enroth. His sociological approach perhaps able to contrast usefully with more theological approaches to abuse in the Church.
A significant community exists around TRR and Julie Roy. Online interaction with its members across TRR content giving it reach into remote places.

We as a church, the bride of Christ must start looking for the fruit of the spirit in others to know them. " But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law." If the one in question has no character of Jesus, then we must question their motives.

CL is an interesting character. I take him to represent individual integrity: having a well-grounded basis for sustaining integrity; developmentally coming to having the capacity to continuously process and articulate an individual experiencing of the human world. His hermetic perspective fulcrummed in a concept of "wolves", then his primary resource. He then offers us an epistemology and ontology concerned with wolves as representing humanity gone wrong (this perspective explicated), and flagged as with-Satan; and a more implicit suggestion of humanity getting it right, which is rather flagged as loving-Jesus and allowing God. All this presented as relevant to keeping the Church cleansed and directed by good compass.
There are then other secular addresses of the same matters which CL attends to; many of them grouped as social science. Here the individual is not always, or perhaps primarily the centre of what is attended to. We have complex collectively-attached concepts, such as culture, societal structure and process, and much more.
There is then fruitful tension between these two broad hermetics. The one articulated by CL; and the other offered by social science and secular agency generally. Here the modelling in terms of wolves and sheep, might be tempered usefully by additional thinking.

I would want to talk at length with CL, about psychosis. My sense and understanding of psychosis, attaches to where we move beyond intellectually entertaining an understanding, to where we give over to believing that understanding; where the extent of such believing plays out on a spectrum. So psychosis so understood, attaches to much Christian "conversion" experience, as well as to outcomes we might flag as concerning mental health.

Sometimes I think, that my whole nation are wolves. That said, to the subject: I came to this video on the search words "John MacArthur throws woman out of church for divorcing abusive husband. What stuns me is not only that thing alone, but he is supposedly one of the greatest apologists for the faith. People continue to defend him, as he were just wrong in that situation, but he apparently even shamed the woman from the pulpit in church, while she were a congregant, which on it's own should NEVER happen, and for wanting divorce from a man, that ended up receiving a 20 year sentence for his abuse! Getting things wrong in small matters is one thing, but how can a saved Christian, that is my question, supposedly filled with The Holy Spirit, also called the spirit of truth in scripture, be so wrong and even further victimize the victim and in full public? It is just sickening. That apart, I do not like John MacArthur already and I do not recognize him as a great preacher and teacher at all. As we would say here in Denmark, he is good at sounding profound, while he speak with wool in mouth (we used to ridicule a former prime minister with those words). Also, John MacArthur pretends to be defending the one true gospel against the charismatic movement and the prosperity gospel, but he is a hardcore CALVINIST, believing in predestination and Lordship Salvation: He got no gospel message at all! How can people miss that fact. I also hate the fact, that John MacArthur and all of his many sidekicks and supporters has orchestrated, what I can only describe as one of the greatest attacks on the King James Bible, only for John MacArthur to sell his personal version of NASB with, what he claims is God's true name added, called the LSB. How many millions do an already multi millionaire in US Dollars pastor need to accumulate, who even makes a name for himself preaching against the prosperity gospel? Also, his church is so much deception, as are the Catholic church and the Mormons. One of the greatest versions of Amazing Grace will stun you has been sung by Mormons, who as a matter of fact do not believe in grace at all. Likewise, that John MacArthur calls his church and other business in that tree Grace is simply just word salad: Predestination rule out grace and makes us hopeless, because we can do nothing, because either God choose us for salvation or not. He is not a dispensational teacher either, as he continue to claim, but continuously misuse Old Testament scripture, also in matters, that relate to our gospel message, which is not to find in Old Testament at all, but entirely in the epistles of Apostle Paul, the apostle for the gentiles, as he named himself! There is many things I like about John MacArthur, not least his hard preaching against sin and daring to go up against the sodomite agenda of the world, but even the more I am horrified to note, that he is actually a very deceitful man in his preaching and on so many levels.

Incidental matter. Mel Gibson is arguably a wolf; in as much as the parts he plays, and his demonstrated character, are chalk and cheese different. Again, Hollywood manipulates human understanding to routinely questionable ends: so not only a haven for wolves; but a workshop for wolf-serving products. Mel Gibson in Braveheart sits in the sepsis centre of all that. William Wallace and Scotland and the facts and truths of events, are all misrepresented by the film. All in all, Mel Gibson is a poor choice to represent the individual who stands their ground against the wolves. Dietrich Bonhoeffer might have been better; or, from Scotland, Jane Haining.

We are called into a PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP with The LORD GOD The LORD JESUS CHRIST (His Hebrew Name and Title is Yehoshua Ha Moshiach). Read John 17. People were NOT called into any form of religion by THE LORD JESUS. Through Him we are to reign and live as He is, on this earth - 1John 4:17, Hebrews 2:11, Romans 8:29-34, Ephesians 2:6. We are to live as Sons of The LIVING GOD - Galatians 4:4-5.
There are TWO REALMS of information - the human reasoning realm and the spiritual realm - they can NEVER mix. Read Romans 8:5-8, 1Corinthians 2:4-16. evangelical christianity, which is what the author of the book identifies with, relies on human reason which is CURSED if it is a primary source of human wisdom - read Jeremiah 17:5, Jeremiah 25:6-7. As we are told in Matthew 12, if the tree is bad the fruit is bad. Yes there are wolves in ALL FORMS OF RELIGION as the tree is evil.
evangelical christianity produces spiritually weak people who do not demonstrate the POWER OF THE LORD GOD in Healing and casting out demons, and controlling the outcome of the unknown in the AUTHORITY OF THE LORD GOD Himself. It denies the Power (The Infilling of The HOLY Spirit - read Acts 1:8, Luke 24:49). We are COMMANDED to AVOID all those who deny the POWER - 2Timothy 3:5. The Power is the infilling of THE HOLY SPIRIT with the evidence of speaking in other Tongues - Acts 2: 36-39. THE HOLY SPIRIT is THE LORD JESUS CHRIST Who told us He will come to live in believers, who will be Temples of the HOLY SPIRIT - Read John 14:16, 17, 20, John 16: 7-13, 1Corinthians 3:16- Temples of The HOLY Spirit, 2Corinthians 6 - Temples of The HOLY Spirit, John 7:39, Luke 24:49, Acta 1:8, Acts 2:36-39, Acts 10:44-48, Acts 19:1-6. (Acts 2:38-39 tells us there is no time limit to the infilling of THE HOLY SPIRIT and speaking in other Tongues).
I was brought up roman catholic in a culture that had a plethora of religions and we were well acquainted with the dark spiritual side of which many in the west have little or no understanding. We knew demons were real and the deceptions of an intelligent darkness. No human can overcome that enemy without the discernment of The LORD GOD and His Mind. The realm of The WISDOM of THE LORD GOD cannot be compromised or denied if a person is to live an overcoming dominant life in The VICTORY of The LORD Jesus Christ- 1Corinthians 2:4-16, Colossians 2:7-15.
EVANGELICAL christianity is a greater HERESY in that unlike the pentecostals and charismatics who are also under the influence of pagan rome, it denies THE INFILLING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. To flee from the harlot of babylon as commanded in Revelation 18 - which is the influence of the sun worship cult roman catholic influence one has to flee any church that observes the practices/symbolism/pagan feasts/leadership styles of roman catholicism, which is contrary to the leadership style described in 1Corinthians 14. THE UNSEEN SPIRITUAL REALM is the realm of quantum realities, when it comes to the soulish realm,A so a frequency of unholiness affects the whole. As The Bible tells us a little leaven leavens the whole. If a person is BORN AGAIN of The HOLY Spirit His Peace within us will guide us. The battle for satanic dominance in such people is in the soulish realm. All sins are paid for but we have to be quick to understand that reality, ask for forgiveness of The LORD and return to The Peace of The LORD within us, when we sin. His Peace is Our Guide - Colossians 3:15, Ephesians 2:14, Isaiah 55:12

Paul acknowledged as believers, those who didn't speak in tongues, and he meant real, human languages, too. The litmus test, "with evidence of speaking in tongues" is not a qualification for salvation in the Bible, but added on by the Pentecostal and Charismatic movements, because there were believers in New Testament times, who also had the indwelling Holy Spirit, but who never spoke in tongues.

      @@ktermalkut8332 Of course.
There were those who were believers, acknowledged so, by apostles, who did not speak in even the real tongues. All the mentions of tongues in the Bible are of real languages, and not a single one is of a "prayer language", which sounds like gibberish. Which not only sounds like gibberish, but those who teach it, instruct practitioners-to-be, to relax their minds and just let whatever sounds come out of their mouths, to come, and that's how you "do" the "gift" of tongues. Charlatans, like the ones on television, preach whole sermons about not being afraid to sound foolish, but tongues in the Bible were nothing like that. There are no tongues "lessons" in the Bible. There certainly weren't on the day of Pentecost, so why dishonor the coming of the Holy Spirit to indwell us, by calling manipulated, gibberish, so-called tongues, "pentecostal"? And why let all your eggs ride in that unbiblical basket? Why make your faith go through that? It is better to have a small, quiet, but REAL experience of God, the Holy Spirit, guiding and comforting us, testifying to our hearts of Jesus, than to have plenty of something that is manipulated and false.
I knew a little girl, from the time she was four, whose mother took her to the "apostolic" church of the man and woman who had taken her off the streets: good for them for doing that. They would come in to the Wendy's I spent a lot of time in, so their mom could keep a watch on her husband, the night manager, really, and it got her out of the house for awhile, without having to spend very much money, if any. I became the unofficial, unpaid babysitter, but it was a joy to me, because I didn't have children of my own. One night, when she was about 12, the family came in. LeK___, the oldest, said, "Guess what I learned tonight? How to DO the Holy Spirit!" I had been involved in three total charismatic churches, over a period of about 5-7 years for a few years, anyway, and I also remembered having seen signs on the front of a holiness church, near where I had lived, before, of a school for "how to get the anointing'". I tried to tell her that the Holy Spirit is God, not just something you learn to "do". About two months later, she announced she was an atheist. And there was no talking to her about it; now it was all about being a "diva", like Beyonce or Niki Minaj. I hope for the best for her, that she wake up from this darkness. But that "learned" experience was not of the Holy Spirit at all.
And other false teachers, now even say that we have no experience of the Holy Spirit, despite the Bible telling us just the opposite. If we try to get them to see their error, they point to charismatic charlatans who lead people to wild, ungodly laughter, to screaming and barking like dogs, to shaking with terrible tremors, to obvious experiences of "Kundalini"-like spirits, but not at all of the Holy Spirit. That must be what we're talking about, but it isn't at all. I am going by the Bible, but the Bible doesn't teach these false tongues or false miracles. The Holy Spirit also leads us into discernment. We should be able to recognize the falsehood of the charlatans, but instead, we just let them say just anything is the Holy Spirit, just so we can pretend that miracles (of God) are happening. That neglects the fact that the greatest miracle is salvation of someone's soul. I'm through with fake miracles; they are an abomination. No true miracle of God would be done through a lying charlatan, the leaders of the Charismatic movement. This is one of the main things that discredits the whole charismatic movement.

Hmm, I wonder that in his shaming of others he's trying to appear to be morally and ethically righteous. But....... Reports reveal the opposite, and this is a cover for his own unethical conduct.

After nearly 40 years in ministry, both in the U.S. and other countries, most often assisting with physical needs opens the door to sharing one's faith. Even just sitting with dying people gives the opportunity to share as they are often lonely and in need.
