  • Celebrity culture has invaded the church. Pastors, who should be shepherds serving the flock, have become idols attracting adoring fans and commanding six- and even seven-figure salaries.
What has happened to the church? How did we get here? And what can be done to counter this truly anti-gospel culture?
On this latest podcast, host Julie Roys explores this pervasive problem with Katelyn Beaty, author of ‘Celebrities for Jesus: How Personas, Platforms, and Profits Are Hurting the Church.’
In light of scores of people becoming disillusioned with the church, Katelyn describes the historical development of celebrity culture in the church, the three major temptations celebrity culture has spawned and what believers can do to counter celebrity culture in the church.

I would not point to Billy as he made millions and his son is still making millions. Where do we see in Scripture Jesus having a "harvest crusade"? I completely agree with your premise but using Billy reminded me of the Calvinist pointing to a commentary, book, or Calvin as if Scripture is NOT sufficient. We simply need to get back to what the Early historical Christians did prior to Catholicism or the Reformation both of which are heretical. Catholicism has Mary as their idol and The Reformers have "saved by faith alone" combined with easy grace without good works and "once saved always saved" as their idols. Why is it that "decerning ministries" are decerning within their own doctrine instead of the teachings of Jesus in Matthew chapters 5-7? Because they unknowingly make the same mistakes as Eve of not TRULY knowing what God said.

A time will come instead of Shepards Feeding the flock, we will have clowns entertaining the goats

I'd add Voddie Baucham to the list. What he preaches and talks about is so disturbing. He always makes himself an example too.

The points made by this guest are true in some smaller churches.😢😢. I was hurting, and the leaders did not care.

When the church is built on the wrong foundation there is nothing you can do, you have to destroy it and rebuild it again while you still have time. Otherwise, God by His grace is going to do it for you.

Reverend Billy Graham was limited to technology to reach people, Jesus uses His Holy Spirit and His outreach will always be endless!🙌🏼🙏🏼🙌🏼

The error of Hierarchy does harm the body of Christ. I'm optimistic that we will see the day where there are no more stages, no more VIP areas, no more one part of the body called Pastor having authorty and dominating the gathering, no more beleivers just sitting idle in the pews but encouraged to speak up & contribute. No more traditions of men.

Billy Graham held alter calls to give your heart to Jesus, which cannot be found in the Bible. I think he was sincere, but sincerely deceived. Repeating a sinner’s prayer does not make a person a follower of Christ.

Your are right. Leadership is barely mentioned. Paul said "Follow me as I follow Christ." The point is following...

“ Fallen into sin.”….OR… walked right into sin! Stepped through an open door. Or kicked open a door in order to enjoy a sinful way of living. But “Fallen”…let’s find a better and more aproro term. 🙃

Fallen Christian leaders can certainly be forgiven and also rehabilitated. However, they now should be eliminated from leadership. It should be very simple. No one is that unique to the market of Christian leadership.

Celebrity dynamics and the church. My experience over the years has demonstrated to me that those in “ leadership “ positions like the public forum but are useless at helping or pastoring people thru real day to day problems. They like being the go to guy but have no interest in getting to know people just because they are in the flock. In 43 years of being a believer I have had one pastoral visit . Pastors have no interest in their people until there is a perceived problem. Imagine the impact if these men actually knew their people on a personal level before a problem rose up.

I haven't attended a single church in the last 30 years where the pastor wasn't attempting to be a celebrity. All of these churches were small, but the pastor was trying to get his sermons on radio or put them on UA-cam or get a bunch of social media followers or getting close to bigger celebrities that can get their books published and put them on the speaking circuit. At only one of these 6 or so churches have I seen the pastor squat down to talk to a preschooler with a "silly" question about Jesus's superpowers. I'm not sure what the solution is for our modern pastors. Maybe less broadcasting the gospel and more living it. We need servants.

Just a very insightful interview!!! Thank you for your offerings here!!! Yes, celebrity ministry needs to end!! It's a sign of our media times of obsession. But in someway this 'leader worship' seems to be part of human nature. It's a very strange human tendency, that all have experienced, at times; I'd say. The desire to be identified with a certain "person or thing," either AS a leader, or AS a follower; of the same. The consequences become ensnaring either way; with too much egocentric identity happening!! Of course we are admonished to follow Jesus, (our Lord), and have our identity in him alone!!! Paul told believers to only follow himself, in as much as he followed Christ!! When they began saying "I am of Paul" or "I am of Appolos" he rebuked them by telling them not to do so; and asking "Which of us died for you??" (basically)... Paul said "For me to live is Christ..." He lived and encouraged total identity with the Lord!! I think that the "influence of the world system on the church," has brought in the 'pseudo hero worshiping way'. Not to mention, the branding, and marketing, and money; that moves on in with it; as well!! All such things would have been "unimaginable" in the ways of the early apostles!! And Jesus himself who WAS truly worthy of worship (because he was God incarnate), still came in the form of a humble servant, yet doing the works of God in great power, and in 'loving service to man'. His "..meat was to do the will of the Father" and to proclaim and establish the kingdom of God!! As well as to "give his life a ransom for many," and "to seek, and to save, the lost!!" Even he only did what he saw the Father do, and said what he heard the Father say!! So we learn the lesson of identity with GOD ..and never with 'mere' humanity!! And of course Jesus loved the church beyond all others!!! And Paul loved the church with deep fervor as well; as the beloved people of God!! Because, "God so loved the world (..the people, ..not the systems}.. that he gave his only begotten son..That whosoever believeth in him, should not perish but have everlasting life"!!! The lesson is, being in a "living relationship with God Almighty" through faith in his Holy Son, and his sacrifice for our sin. And then to live daily, in that real and loving relationship with God; through the indwelling Holy Spirit ("the Lord is that Spirit.." the Bible says..) Then to both, know him deeply, and make him known, through the Spirit and power of the Lord Jesus Christ!! WE the church need to 'return' to the original WAY, of living in CHRIST alone!!! Then we wouldn't be having all of these carnal issues, with pseudo identifications, with people and structures that cannot be trusted, with the adoration that belongs only to God!!!.. Whether leaders, or followers; we simply must live..."doing all as unto the LORD!!! "Our lives are hidden with Christ in God!!" This is our only identity!!!

I believe one of the answers for exposing problems in the church is in Acts 20. Paul calls for the Ephesian elders and gives them a dutch-uncle talk about true ministry and leadership:

Lord, help these ladies to continue to be transparent, truth-focused in their research and discussions.

I believe the first mega church was Amy simple, McPherson, also known as sister Amy at the Angeles Temple in California. That would be a really good deep dive to get into for one of your podcast.

Anyone familiar with the celebrity “Pastor” Rod Parsley of World Harvest Church in Columbus, OH? In the late 90s, I was a member of that church, a member of the horn section, and a student at their bogus (unaccredited at the time) “Bible college“. Wow, what an experience that was. It really opened my eyes to this realm of celebrity Christianity.

George Whitfield - a Calvinist spreading the system - and the more prolific a system, the more people “appreciate their work” when we have no idea the motive of the writing of a systematic theology, book, or church statement. It isn’t real unless you know the person personally - only Jesus do we trust in faith❤️❤️ when abused in a reformed, more liturgical setting, it’s NOT about that. It’s about following Him wherever you are- so sad that abuse is everywhere - but Satan can’t stifle the true remnant everywhere - the liturgical or not liturgical setting
