Note: Since I made this video I realised that an out turned (chod style) hook works best with this rig. If you use heavy material like the 35lbs Nash Skinlink then I would recommend the Nash Chod Claw as it has a larger eye of any hook I’ve tested. The Nash Chod Twister works well too but it's better suited to the 25lb Skinlink material.

Carp fishing doesn't have to be complicated 😊 You can also bury the swivel into the bait and use the cut and blob technique for extra tangle resistance. I think you'll find my latest rig video (the mono d rig) of real interest too. It’s easy to tie, tangle free, and uses the minimum amount of bits (all of which aren’t necessary as you’ll see!) Hi Matt, thanks for the comment. Glad you like the video. The Nash claws have a massive gape which is why they work despite the in-turned eye. For more normal gape hooks try an out turned eyed (chod style) hook. 20lb N-Trap works well with a size 6 chod hook if you want to go a bit more delicate. Straight points or beaked points work well. If you want to fish the multi rig with my inline lead system then try and choose a nice firm spot so that the stiffer combi hooklink lays flat. You don’t want to fish it over anything soft or the hooklink will loop up on you. Have fun with it. Cheers, Matt.

Interesting method with the floss. I tend to run it through the swivel or rig rings first, then pull the tag ends through the bait and burn off the ends with a lighter.
Hi James, absolutely, what you describe works very well too. If you are fishing at max range or with softer baits or with nuisance species this “belt and braces” method works well. I use it here on the river. Cheers, Matt.

@@leegray8950 Hi Lee, mainline strength isn't what's important here actually. What’s more important is hook eye size. I think you wanted to fish with size 6 hooks. I’d recommend the Nash Chod Claw rather than the Nash Claw I used when I filmed this (the chod patterns work better I found). I’d use the skinlink in 25lbs with a size 6 Nash chod claw.
I got the Nash chod claw hooks, Nash sinklink in 25lb and the only running rings I could get from Angling Direct were drennan ones.

Another really simple bug looks to be hugely effective multi-rig. I’ll definitely use this one, I like the fact you say it’s very tangle resistant at long distance. I’m often fishing at 120-140yds on one of my syndicate lakes so this will work brilliantly for me I suspect. Many thanks Matt, or should I say Carp guru man😁😁😁😁
Hi mate, thanks again for your amazing comment. This rig is devastating in all forms when combined with the Beausoleil running lead system (I don’t recommend my lead system for weed, it’s best to dump the lead on the take). To optimize this for long range don't strip any coating off. At that range you need to consider aerodynamics too. It might not sound like much but a 25lb coated material is thinner than 35lbs which will keep the knots smaller therefore improving the aero. I'd also consider dropping a hook size and using a small popup rather than a 20mm bottom bait. Do let me know how you get on. Cheers, Matt.

No worries mate, to be honest with you I think there’s a lot of B/S about Carp rigs. It just seems to me it’s Blokes trying to outdo each other with the newest, latest, most complex rig trying to prove that they are the new Billy Big Nuts of the Carp world. Personally I believe simplicity is the key to consistently successful Carp fishing. Simple, basic, common sense stuff like ultra mega sharp hooks, a rig that doesn’t tangle when casting it, a rig that kicks aggressively on the take, and skilled work with a marker float so you know what kind of lake bottom your actually fishing over. I will try your multi-rig with the Beausoleil semi-fixed/running in-line lead system, I suspect with the exception of very weedy lake beds when you simply have to fish a choddy this set-up will pretty much fish anywhere. Thanks again mate for really helpful and straightforward, no B/S advice. Very impressed😁😁😁😁
@@captpicard6894 Yes mate, 100% agree with you there! It’s a really simple sport that anglers like to make complicated just for the sake of it! I also believe that carp fishing is meant to be fun. This seems to be lost on many as they bemoan their luck and blame everything else, other than themselves. You mention marker floats. TBH in recent years I’ve moved over to a leading rod, rather than a marker rod. You don’t even need a fourth rod, just carry a spool of 40lbs fine braid with you. At the start of the session I tie on a suitably sized lead (3oz dumpty pears works great) and just lead around and have a bit of drag back here and there. To roughly measure depth you can count the drop in seconds. I find this setup gives me much more feel than a marker float (the float seems to dull the sensation of what’s down there somehow). It also creates less disturbance than a marker float, and can be cast further with less effort. When fishing on a water with other anglers they’ll have a real hard time keeping up with you as it’s a very stealthy approach ;) Have fun, Matt.

Im just getting back into carp fishing, great video. What are your thoughts on adding a small mesh pva bag buddy? Would this hinder anything? Thank you in advance.
Hi Dean, glad you liked the video and thanks for the feedback. The multi rig is one of the few rigs where adding a small bag of PVA mesh could be a bad option. If you make up a PVA mesh bag and just hook it on the hook, when you cast out, the force of the water onto the surface area of the bag can easily shift the hook on the hooklink and pull the bait right up to the hook eye. This is not what you want at all obviously. The larger the PVA bag, the further you’re casting out, the worse this problem becomes.
If you want to create a small bit of attraction around the hook, here are some other options:
* The only time it’s possible to get away with nicking on a bag like this is when using a really stiff hooklink and dropping it using a bait boat, rowing boat or gently underarm in the margin.
* Or you can solve the problem by tying the D loop onto the shank securely with PVA tape but even then I wouldn't want to cast this very far.
* The other option would be to use what’s called a parachute bag (a solid PVA bag with the lead outside the bag). Again these are not suited to casting very far.
* Personally when I use the multi rig I tend to use the supple braid version and stick the whole lot into a solid PVA bag (lead inside the bag). This overcomes all the issues and means I can get a bit of extra flavour round the rig.
Hope that’s helpful, it’s a bit of a minefield this carp fishing lol. Cheers, Matt.

Quick question - do you ever find that the hook loop pulls back and tightens against the hook eye when you cast? I’m guessing that the selection of a thicker of hook-link material is designed to give maximum resistance and therefore hold the loop’s position on the shank?
Hi Andy, I totally understand your concern, I had the same, but on the cast, when the bait hits the water, it actually locks the d in place. So it won’t move. The only scenario where the loop can move is if you hook on pva mesh bags onto the hook, as when you cast, the bag pulls on the hook and that will move the d. If you’re fishing the multi rig, and after you wind in, the loop is closed down, then you’ve been done. Hope that helps. Cheers, Matt

Hi Lewis, thanks for commenting. At the end of the day, it's a personal choice. By leaving the coating unstriped it means that the loop stays securely in place on the cast. If you strip off all of the coating below the loop you'll have to secure the loop in place by other means. Either with a kicker (which I don't use) or with some PVA tape. The rig, in the form I've done it, may seem crude but it works and it's easy to fish with. The ability to change hooks quickly is a massive plus with this rig. Hope that helps. Cheers, Matt.

Great videos..ive just watched a few of them and noticed some errors I've been doing 😳. With the multi rig can you use widegape hooks ? Also can you do a video of how you attached your mesh pva bag to it.

The Nash claw hook I use in this video only works because it has a massive gape and a big eye. You’re far better off using a chod style pattern like the Nash chod twister.
Attaching a PVA bag to the hook when fishing the multi rig is not a good idea because the D will slide up to the eye on impact with the water. The best way to do it is to use some PVA tape, thread the tape through the D loop and then tie the PVA mesh bag to the tape. This will lock the D in place on the cast. Good idea for a video 😊
yet another awesome vid, matt! Just a couple of questions; is this rig hook-fussy?(i.e does it have to specifically be the type youre using here, or can it be a chod, unturned eye etc?)

Hi Clive, there are a number of options that work but since I made this video I found that out- turned eyed (chod style) hooks actually work the best. Even within the range of chod patterns available there are differences though so you have to be a little bit careful as certain hooks and materials won’t be compatible. I love the size 6 Nash Chod Twisters for my mono rigs but the eye is a little small with 25lb skinlink so I actually prefer the size 6 Nash Chod Claw which is the chod version of the hook I originally used. The eye is larger than the Chod Twister and this makes it a piece of cake to get the 25lbs skinlink threaded through without the need for a special tool. That’s all that matters really so if you’ve got some chod hooks and a coated braid where you can do this with then I’d say you are good to go. After that it’s just down to stiffness and that depends on range and personal preference.
With regards to your other question, I assume it’s about PVA mesh? The multi rig is not ideally suited to PVA mesh and as load on the hook will move the hooklink material up the shank which you don’t want. You can tie it into place but it’s a pain. If you can attach the PVA mesh to the hooklink loop next to the bait then this works as it will only serve to lock it in tighter. Personally I just bait up separately. Cheers, Matt.

Does it only work with straight shanked hooks or can it be used with a curve shank
Hi Barry, thanks for commenting and I'm glad you like the video. I know that curve shank hooks are very popular and I used to fish with them but every now and again the hook hold would make a nasty cut before taking hold. For that reason, and like many French fisheries, I have banned curve shanked hooks at Beausoleil. If I set that aside, I still wouldn't use a curve shank with the multi rig. I know a few people do but I really don't like the way it looks in terms of rig mechanics. Cheers, Matt.
If you put a small piece of stiff tube over the loop of the floss before you fold it over around the boilie the stiff tube pressed into the boilie stops it from splitting when you tighten it....very useful for softer baits....!!

Nice video Matt, have you ever tried the perfection loop instead of the overhand Knott. Also just wondering if you looped through to the swivel instead of tieing the loop to the swivel weather you would get a better hinge action when the fish picks it up. 👍
Hi David, thanks for commenting. Sure it’s definitely an option and I have tried to master the perfection loop a number of times but TBH I struggle to tie it reliably lol. I've also tried putting the swivel into the loop to give it extra movement and it made no difference whatsoever. For me the most important thing is to be able to tie strong, reliable knots… day or night with or without eyes open lol. It’s also nice to be able to swap out the whole rig with that simple loop to loop connection. It just gives me more options that are easy and quick to do. For me it’s all about getting a fresh rig back on the spot ASAP. All the best with your fishing. Matt.

Would u have your bait runner set quite stiff or tight, to help kick the hook over more or have it set more lose so it can run more on the take
Hi Mark, that's a good question actually. If you fish with a bait runner, I’d set it as stiff as your setup can cope with, whatever rig you’re using. It will make sure the carp are better hooked so you’ll lose less fish. I’m going to throw you a curve ball here and say that I never use a bait runner facility. For the last 15 years, I’ve fished semi locked up no matter where I’m fishing. It has loads of advantages and I’ve converted lots of anglers during tutorials at Beausoleil, but I know that if you’re used to fishing a bait runner then it takes a massive leap of faith to change. Hi mate, yeah as I said on the PM any quality widegape hook or even out-turned eye pattern works well for this rig. I don't bother curving the hook loop myself but then again I mainly use bottom baits so I don't really feel the need. I also found that this rig works fine as a pop-up without the curve but there's no reason why you shouldn't take the time to curve it if you fancy. Cheers, Matt.
I like the idea of tihs rig. But I tried it wih just a swivel on the hook loop and when I pulled on it it just slipped over the eye of the know, I'll need to find a smaller swivel. But the real question is how do you keep the loop set to what you desire. As there is no real restriction to prevent the loop from just simply going forward.
I really like the idea of trying your bait on with dental floss. Are there any negative to doing thie instead of using bait stops. I am using a type of cain growing around the lake for bait stops. I did a dental floss on a pellet shaped pop-up and the fish just nibbled off one side of the pop-up, LOL.

I totally get where you are coming from. I didn't understand the multi rig myself until I tied some up! Ideally to start with you need to use a heavy coated braid like Skinlink 35lbs. I like the stiff version as it holds really well. My other concern was what happens when you cast the rig. What you’ll find is that when pressure is applied to the bait and the hooklink is tensioned, this locks the loop really tight on the shank of the hook so it doesn’t go anywhere. If you are struggling to find a stiff coated braid you can use a regular braid but you need to add a small bead or blowback tube onto the bait loop behind the eye of the hook. This provides just enough friction to hold the loop in place. You can’t use PVA mesh (hooked onto the hook) with this setup as the extra load will move the loop. It’s a massive advantage to be able to change the hooks regularly and I love to use this rig when river carping as it’s such a time saver. I hope you have the confidence to try it and test it. It’s the only way to wrap your head around it really! Cheers, Matt.
If using coated braids such as Jel Y wyre.....its best to use a figure 8 knot as the overhand knot is a strangulation knot and breaks Jel y wyre at the knot at low breaking strains I have found !!
Thanks for sharing. I've never used jel y wire myself and based on your observation that it can fail if you use the wrong knot I doubt I'll be adding it to my collection. The only coated braid I use nowadays is the Nash skinlink. A guest showed it to me a few years ago and I was amazed by its strength and abrasion resistance compared to other makes.

Hi Geoff, yes mate to all 3. That’s the beauty of the multi rig, it can rapidly be switched to cover a variety of situations. I use it with bottom baits very regularly. It’s my preferred choice when fishing solid PVA bags but I use Armourlink instead of Skinlink. I’ve also found that a chod style hook like the Nash Chod Twister is a much better option than an in turn eyed hook. When I need to use 35lbs Skinlink I swap to the Nash Chod Claw as the eye is larger than the Twister so it’s much easier to get the loop through. I’ve done another version of this multi rig specifically for solid PVA bag work. The video will be coming out in the Spring so do subscribe and hit the bell to receive a notification. Cheers, Matt.

Hi John, thanks for your question. I avoid using lead clips whenever possible. I know that they are the cornerstone of most anglers’ approach but the sooner you move away from them the better IMO. It does work over firm silt but if you want something that can tolerate a wider range of depths and softness then I’d go with my trick swivel running lead setup: ua-cam.com/video/hoHB1gi_sQs/v-deo.html I would spend some time with a leading rod and cast about until you find the firmer areas of silt anyway as these will always be more productive. Hi Robert, carp rigs are designed differently to rigs used in other types of fishing. No, hooklink doesn’t have to be a lower breaking strain than your mainline.
Because we have very large catfish here, I chose to use 35lb Nash skin link for this rig but this would be OTT for most regular carp fishing situations. I like Nash skinlink for the multi rig as it's very very robust and can be reused many times (just change the hook!) The 25lb version is a good all-rounder for general carp fishing and would work great with 15lb mainline. Hope that helps. Cheers, Matt.

Hi mate, glad you like the video. Yes mate you can do. Personally I don't use bait screws as it’s just another bit of metal work to buy and store lol. Make sure you buy ones that are compatible with the type of bait you want to mount though. The metal screw type works great with cork ball popups but would be useless for a standard bottom bait. I think there are some plastic types of screw available that are better suited to a standard bottom bait so do your research on this or your baits will drop off! Cheers, Matt.

I added a kicker but with a chod hook it didn’t look right so I removed it. I caught on the rig but is it ever a concern for you using a chod hook that the hook can slide around? Maybe not an issue with coated braid but on a solid bag with stripped braid it moved freely, or maybe that’s the edge? ..... on your advice in previous videos I bought a jag hook sharpening kit. My hook holds are much better and I’m catching a few so cheers for that
@@Mylo831 Hi Phil, I understand your concern about the braid loop moving but if you build the bag right it's perfectly possible to lock everything in place so this doesn't happen. It's a bit tricky to describe in words lol. You can solve the problem very easily with some PVA tape and just tie the loop tightly to the hook shank just below the eye. There's another trick with a bead I've been thinking about too. I'm really glad that you're seeing some results and that you've been able to up your game. Check out the Nash chod twister and the chod claw hooks. Very very sharp out the packet and if you find one that's not perfect, a few licks of the hone and it's good to go. When using this rig with PVA bags would you leave the coating on or strip it for a more supple rig? Tia
Hi mate, I don’t use coated braids for anything (virtually). For solid bags I would use my blowback multi (ua-cam.com/video/7VlmNHg0BD0/v-deo.html). 25lb Armourlink would be my go-to option. You’ll need to add a blowback tube to hold the D in place. Coated braids don’t like being coiled up inside a bag. Tie one up, lob it in a bucket and see how it sits. It will basically be a coiled up mess but it might work (occasionally). Coated braids are a pain in the XXXX to strip so I’d forget that option. Cheers, Matt.
Matt. Quick question, I notice you do not break the braid below the knot? Does this not make a better hinge in the material, it is how I was shown the rig, and it works for me? You can also make it into a pop up in moments? Just a thought, not saying you are wrong, just different?
Hi Richard, good question! It all depends on what I’m doing really. I demonstrated tying it this way because one of the biggest problems I see on the bank here is anglers struggling to hit the clip and land a rig properly. If you have a hinge you are introducing a tangle risk. I would also never fish this rig with a hinge if I was fishing bottom baits. If you tank test this you’ll find the hooklink will loop up badly. If I want to fish a popup then yes absolutely add a hinge but I have dedicated rigs set up for this. Hope that helps, Cheers, Matt.
Any slippage of the loop on hard casts?
Hi Andrew, that’s a good question. I avoided trying the multi rig for years because I didn’t believe that the loop wouldn't slip. It turns out that I was wrong! The reason it works is that the forces at play here only act on the bait because the bait has a much larger surface area than the hook. You can test this yourself, just hold the swivel and the bait and gently pull and you’ll see that the loop doesn't budge, in fact it just anchors itself tighter into position. On a hard cast the impact force will act upon the bait, not the hook so it doesn't matter whether you are clipped up or just firing it straight in, max power, no feathering. It was one of the first tests I did on this rig actually. I just cast out as hard and as far as I could 10 times, wound the rig in and inspected it. The results were clear: no tangles, no slippage and as long as you mount the bait securely, you can be sure it’s sat there perfectly ready to catch you a carp. The ability to change hooks quickly makes this rig a game changer . If you give it a go, let me know how you get on. Cheers, Matt.

Hi Dave, thanks very much mate. Glad you liked it. I was using the semi-stiff version in this video. TBH most decent combi link materials work well. Recently been using Koda's N-Trap in 20lbs. It isn't as tough and strong as the Skinlink but it's good enough for most venues. You might want to try this rig with an out-turned eyed hook (chod) style hook too. The Nash claws work well because they have a massive gape but most regular chod patterns will do the business. You can use straight point or beaked ;) You can also vary how you mount the bait. If you find bait has swung round and tangled because it's being knocked around by the the fish just push the bait fully onto the swivel and use the cut and blob technique with mono or floss. @@Yosser70 Well good for you mate! Yes, N-Trap 20lb works better with smaller hooks, stick to 4s and 6s, carp have big mouths lol. Caught my first carp some 37 years ago before carp fishing was invented lol. I had a break from fishing for some 10 years and everything had changed so much. It was quite a journey I can tell you. So much conflicting advice! Keep your rigs simple, hooks razor sharp and concentrate on finding and feeding the carp. All the best mate :)

Hi Paul, no I’m afraid that heavy duty mono would be a poor choice for the multi rig. It has too much memory and is too springy. If you want to use the multi rig then you’ll need to use high quality coated material like the Nash Skinlink.
If you only have heavy duty mono, then I would use a D-rig configuration. We haven't made a how-to on my heavy duty D-rig yet, but here’s a very short video and you’ll get the idea: ua-cam.com/users/shortsCh032Nsihcc?feature=share. Remember that mono rigs like these are designed to be disposable, that’s why I use cheap mono. The Nash Heavy Duty Mono Snag leader material that I use comes on 100m spools and costs £9. That’s easily enough for 200+ rigs!

Hi Aidan, I wouldn't recommend the Korda Kurv with this rig because curved hooks don't work well with unstripped combi materials. Since filming this video, I've gone over to chod style (out turned eye) pattern hooks with this rig and they work great. If you're familiar with Korda then look at the Korda Krank choddy or the standard Korda Choddy. The Kamakura are better than your standard out the packet hooks but personally I prefer to buy less expensive hooks and sharpen them myself. I highly recommend trying barbless. I made the change this year and I'm so glad I did. They go in deeper and if you sharpen or change them very regularly, you won't lose any fish. Safer too and easier to unhook. I have to use online retailers to get the hooks I want, Angling Direct are very good, if that helps. Good luck, Matt.

Hi Richard, thanks for commenting and glad you like the video. For me, the out turned/inturned eye is less important than the design of the point itself and how sharp it is in the first place. You can use a variety of patterns but as our lake is very hard and gravelly, a beaked point works better. Straight point hooks get damaged too easily. The Nash Claw is an excellent hook as it’s got a large eye and a very long thin sharp point. They only need a tickle with a hone on three sides to become deadly. I tried the Fox Edges range for some time but found the points got eaten away by the iron rich water we have here. Other patterns like the Korda Wide Gape X or ESP Cryogen are good hooks but need more work with a file to make them as good as the claws. I do use an out turned eye (Drennan Continental in a size 2) when using this rig on the river. I don’t use it because it’s an out turned eye. I use it because the point is shorter, stubbier and much stronger than the Nash claw and can take the rigours of fishing for 30 - 40lbs river carp. Hope that makes sense :) Cheers, Matt.

Hi mate, thanks for the comment, yes absolutely you can add an anti tangle sleeve. For me it depends on the range I'm fishing and the stiffness of the hooklink material that I'm using. With a more supple coated hooklink, an anti tangle sleeve is a good addition but personally I find the Nash skinlink to be stiff enough. If I was fishing at long range 100 yards + and not fishing to a clip I would consider adding tubing just to be sure. During testing at short/medium range I had no issues with the rig as I tied it in the video. Cheers, Matt.
Will a pva sock pull the loop back to the eye on the cast? Thats my only reservation with this rig as i always drop a sock on.
Hi mate, yes you’re absolutely right this is a drawback with the multi rig but there is a work around. Once you’ve made your PVA stick, take some 4mm wide PVA tape and thread a 10cm piece through the top (underneath the knot). Then thread the tag end through the loop that forms the D. Finish with two overhand knots to draw the PVA stick close to the rig. Trim off excess and cast out. Because the stick is now pulling from the loop rather than the hook, the loop will stay anchored in place. You can launch a stick mounted like this a very long way with absolute confidence, it won’t budge. Best of luck, Matt.

You should always push the swivel into the boilie up to the barrel. It’s better to tie the bait floss around the bait stop this will give better presentation and the boilie won’t flop around where it meets the boilie

Hi Emmanuel, thanks for your question. In this video I used the Nash Skinlink in 35lbs semi stiff in combination with a size 4 Nash Claw hook.
These hooks have a particularly large eye so they can take 35lbs hooklink without having to strip it back. I’ve now found that regular size 4 hooks work better with 25lb hooklink. If you are using size 6 hooks then you might want to drop to 20lbs to make the hooklink easier to thread. Nowadays, if I use a semi stiff coated material with other brands of hooks, I prefer out turned eyed (chod style) to avoid closing the gape.
This rig also works with softer coated materials but I also use braid a lot for this rig, especially when fishing solid PVA bags. Generally speaking, most 20lb coated braids will work well with most size 4 or size 6 out turned eyed hooks. Hope that helps. Cheers, Matt.

Hi Dennis, I’m not sure I follow your question. Carp suck and blow stuff into and out of their mouths all the time. It’s how they sort food from non-food items. The hook is a non- food item so once detected, the carp will try to blow the hookbait out. I cannot imagine a scenario when this wouldn't happen. If the carp doesn't spit out the rig, it's hooked.

Yeah, it will work as well. I’ve just never used a bait screw in my life. I don’t like the thought of the extra metal work, something else to buy or to lose in my case lol. I just don’t think it’s necessary.

Nice one Matt - I would be worried about how the bait is mounted where there are Crayfish (as in my lake in Amsterdam),
as they only have to cut through one strand of floss to compromise the mounting! Any tips to avoid that?
Hi Matthew, thanks for your question. I must admit I’ve never really had any problems with crayfish in my fishing. Sure I’ve had one of two baits scratched and a hooklink snipped but it’s rare so I might not be the best person to answer this question. In order to make the bait mounting more secure I would probably start by using the mono bait loop mount trick that I use in my mono D rig video: ua-cam.com/video/hoHB1gi_sQs/v-deo.html
I’m only using 0.40 mono for this loop but if you used a heavy duty material link, a chod link or a bit of heavy duty leader material, that might work. Do let me know how you get on. Cheers, Matt.

@@matthewcollinsangler Cheers fella. I'll give them a try for sure. I just like the versatility that floss gives me that I can add more than one bait of different sizes. I'm experimenting with tying bait stops with the floss to see if that strengthens it but with a snowman rig the bottom bait is coming back OK but the pop off has gone which leaves an unsightly length of bait floss exposed which might be enough to put the fish off... Will keep tweaking. Hopefully as the water cools down it won't be so much of an issue..
@@MatthewHarvey The longer (21mm) Nash bait screws have been designed for larger baits or a snowman presentation. I’d also use special hardened baits. I’d be perfectly confident just fishing a 24mm Scopex Squid hardened hookbait spritzed with some hookbait spray or just glugged. Loads of attraction. You wouldn't need the popup then. If you wanted to lighten the bait you could always core it out and plug with a bit of foam but TBH I never bother myself.

Hi mate, thanks for commenting. It's a good question but I can assure you that a simple overhand knot is very strong in this material. There's nothing wrong with the figure of 8 knot but I reserve it for making loop to loop connections in mono. You can use the figure of 8 knot in the skinlink but it's harder to tie and results in a much bulkier knot. I test all my knots with an 8kg kettle bell and the overhand knot in the Skinlink passes that test easily. This rig has also banked multiple 100lb + catfish which are capable of snapping all but the heaviest of terminal tackle! Tight lines, Matt.

Yes mate, absolutely. I switched over to those exact hooks for this rig last year. For the braided version of this rig I prefer the Nash chod Twisters. If I'm using skinlink then I use the Nash chod claws as the eye is bigger. Great hooks. Sharpest out the packet money can buy ;)

I've made some multi rigs using your tutorial but used 25lb Skin link and size 6 claw hook. The micro swivel to set the bait looks a lot smaller than the ones you used on your video. The ones I got are size 22, could you tell me what size the ones you used are? thanks
Hi mate, in this video I used micro ring swivels (possibly Nash). TBH any make/size will work and small is good. The other option is to ditch the micro ring swivel alltogether and just use a loop of mono (cut and blob style) like I do in my mono-D rig video. You can then choose how close or far the bait sits from the hook. Yes you’ll lose the spin action but that, as I proved with the mono D rig, doesn't make a blind bit of difference to the level of effectiveness. The size 6 claw will definitely work as it has a massive gape for the size of the hook. You might want to consider experimenting with an out turned eyed hook (chod style). If you like the Nash claw they do a chod claw version which maximises the available gape even further. Hope that helps, cheers, Matt.

The only thing I’d question is is the rig losing a bit of free movement being loop to looped on the swivel as opposed to something like a figure of 8 or a grinner type loop? Also, it would appear that you’re overshotting the pop up with quite a lot of putty?
Hi mate, thanks for commenting. I've chatted to Julian about multi rigs and there are quite a few differences in our approaches. His rigs have been perfected for the waters he fishes. Mine have be perfected for the waters I know. Try both, see what works where you fish. My apologies if various points weren't clear on the video. I use a size 8 ring swivel for my loop to loop connection which gives near perfect 360 degrees freedom at the base of the lead. You mention the figure of 8 loop. In the Skinlink material, the simple overhand knot is mega strong so no need for a bulkier knot. The rig as shown is a bottom bait rig, not a popup rig. Here I'm using a 24mm bottom bait with a size 4 claw. If you want to turn this into a popup rig then swap the micro ring swivel for a simple rig ring so that the popup sits tight to the shank. Personally I use out the bag, freshly rolled freezer bait for 95% of my fishing. Towards the end I show a wafter (critically balanced) version. The size of the putty has got nothing to do with overshotting as the wafter and the bottom bait rigs sit on the bottom on their own. It's just there to make the rig behave like it's mega short and turn the hook over even quicker. Hope that clears things up for you. Cheers, Matt.

I don’t know why, but I have real trouble using putty. I always squeeze it about first to make it more mould friendly but I find that it sometimes comes off, even when mounted on a shot. I’ve now started biting on a BB shot which generally slightly overshots the 15mm pop ups that I use.
I’ve only been using this rig with pop ups, but I’m going to start experimenting with both.

@@djdave29 That's great to hear mate, glad you're enjoying the content! I've tried most makes of putty and like always there is good stuff and some rubbish. I've been using the Korda Dark matter for years. Summer or winter it works great for me. Not too sticky, not too hard. Moulding it round a knot like I've shown here is very effective as there is more surface area for it to grip round. If I do use popups, I just use BB shot myself. My hand rolled cork balls are so buoyant sometimes I need three! Do give the version I've shown a go with a standard bottom bait. It works very well. Just remember that the most important part of the rig is a razor sharp hook ;)

Hi David, thanks for commenting. If you’re fishing over clean flat ground, then the trick inline setup from the other video works great with the multi rig. It's not ideal over anything soft though as the stiffer hooklink could loop up. I've been developing a swivel based trick running rig that you can find on my spring blog part 1. It's better suited to a wider range of fishing situations including long range and softer bottom types. We are going to film a full " How to " on this swivel setup but it's pretty easy and I'm sure you'll work it out from vlog 1. All the best with your fishing. Cheers, Matt.
I just watched that video, do you mean to say use the lead setup from the spring video with the multi rig or to use the mono rig aswell, I'm sort of in a pursuit to find a rig which works in most situations if you get where I am coming from

If you're looking for a truly universal go anywhere rig, then I'd combine the multi rig (this video) with the lead setup from the Spring Vlog 1 which is this video: ua-cam.com/video/LMG0aCceD64/v-deo.html. The mono rig featured in the Spring vlog 1 would also be a great option for you. My inline rig (this video: ua-cam.com/video/ED58TfFEcqM/v-deo.html is very good but it does have its limitations which is why I've come up with something new. Hope that straightens things out? @@davidhowell3430 Hi David, yes the solid PVA bag setup is perfect for my trick inline lead system. I wouldn't use it if the weed is heavy though. Best to use an out line inline setup and dump the lead on the take if you’re in weed. 👍
Matt can I ask your honest opinion on the best winter pop up your go to for the single approach
Hi mate, sure no problem. My honest answer is that if your rig and most importantly, your hook, are good enough, it won't matter what colour or flavour popup you use. There’s an awful lot of marketing bull in the bait game! I’ve been making and rolling my own for years as I want the best quality ingredients. I also roll all my own popups normally. This autumn I decided to fish with an off the shelf pot of something I fancied. This pot is Sticky Bait pineapple wafters with N-Butyric which I know from my fishery management research to be a proven attractor for carp. I have fished these as singles but I’ve also fished them over a scoop full of cereal pellet which takes 12 hrs to break down with the water temperature as it is. I’ve done very few rod hours and averaged a carp a night. Singles are a great bet in the winter so pick a pot of something that you have or fancy, be religious in your rig prep, make sure your hooks are stupidly sharp (I’m talking sharper than a Kamakura sharp) and fish with absolute confidence. Oh and most importantly don’t second guess yourself (pick two or three spots and leave them until they rip off or it’s time to go home!). Hope that’s helpful. Matt.

As it’s all handmade it’s already more expensive than commercially available products. If you factor in the carriage costs (really expensive in France), the costs would be way too high. @@thecarpfather5757 Hi Paul, so Beausoleil is exclusive hire only, you don’t share the lake or house with anyone else. The lake is 4 acres for a max. of 4 anglers. Most of the time, we have groups of 2 or 3 anglers only which is perfect for the venue. There’s also a fully equipped luxury lodge (sleeps 4 people). The price for 2021 is £1,435 for the week for up to 4 people. We get booked up quite far in advance and right now the first week available we have in 2021 is the 2nd of October. What hookbait is that? The big boilie?
That was a bait I made myself. We don’t make it anymore as I can’t get the ingredients. Nowadays we use Nash Scopex Squid.
Why is the swivel not pulled half way into the boilie so just the bottom half of the swivel is just sticking out?
Hi Shaun, that’s a good question, TBH it was just the way I was fishing at the time and it was working very well so I showed it this way for the video. As I continued to fish with this rig over the following months I tried the method you suggest and it worked just as well. If there are a lot of nuisance species kicking the bait around or if I was fishing at mega range and not clipping up then yes I would pull the bait onto the swivel as you describe as it makes it less likely for the bait to spring around the shank and ruin the presentation.

That was a 20mm bottom bait, I roll my own.
You dont have to pull the hook and bait tru you can make the same conection just With a small loop and a swivel but a big loop is better for anti tangle
Hi Bram, thanks for the feedback. When we filmed this I should have done it with the swivel tied to the mainline. It would have been clearer. I use a loop to loop connection to enable me to quickly change rigs. What you say is true if the swivel has not yet been tied to the mainline or if you haven’t put a bait on. I change the loop size depending on what size of bait I'm using. I make the loop just big enough to pass the bait through so if I'm fishing with 15mm baits I would tend to tie a smaller loop. Unless I was planning on swapping bait sizes, in which case I'd make the loop suitable for the largest size of bait. I hope that makes sense! Cheers, Matt.

Hi mate, thanks for commenting. Yes absolutely, you can use it for cats. It's good for any species actually. I’ve caught big chub and massive rudd on the rivers and had plenty of huge cats on this rig to 100lbs+. Just keep changing and/or sharpening the hooks to keep catching. I usually change the entire rig after a big cat as the pads damage the hooklink. For carp, you can use the same rig for many captures. Best of luck, Matt.

@@gljpestcontrol Isn't everyone lol. I fished with this rig for a year and it works great for both species. If you struggle to tie a decent knotless knot then I’d highly recommend it. Good for short sessions too, or busy sessions when you need to change hooks quick and get a rig back on the money pronto. I mainly used it in combination with my trick inline lead system. You also need to check out my Mono D-rig video: ua-cam.com/video/hoHB1gi_sQs/v-deo.html Very simple but absolutely deadly for carp and cats. You need to enjoy rig tying though as it's basically a new rig per fish as the mono damages easily. You can also combine the trick swivel lead system of the mono D with the multi rig. I used this rig today and lost some nice fish, I was propper pissed off at the time. Only thing different i added was a bait screw instead of the swivel and also i used a small hook aligner over the eye of the hook. Why was i loosing fish with this rig?
Hi mate, the addition of a bait screw should make no difference whatsoever. The so called line aligner or kicker can make a massive amount of difference! For me they can have a serious negative effect on the rig mechanics. They delay when the hook can turn over and catch which can indeed result in the carp lip being nicked rather than properly hooked. I was having a similar problem some 15 years ago and a top angler I knew told me to lose the kicker. I did and I never looked back as my results soared. If you lose the kicker and are still dropping a few then the only other possible cause of a hookpull is a damaged hook. Or if you're sharpening them, miss sharpened hooks. The damage can be so small it's impossible to see with the naked eye or by feeling with your finger. Learn to use a proper jewellers loupe x10 power. Not one you can buy on eBay for £5. Inspect every hook before you cast out. You will find duff ones! Do this religiously and hookpulls should become something of the past. Hope that solves your problem. This rig is catching some very tricky carp week in week out at mine so I hope it works for you. Cheers, Matt.

With this rig i am useing only bottom baits at the moment which is an 18mm single bait with a curv shank size 6 hook as i prefer bottom baits then pop ups for 99% of my fishing as i like the idea of keeping it to the same as the bait i am puting out there for offerings. I do have one more question if you don't mind but what size hook would you say to use with an 18mm bottom bait for this rig and also do you strip back the coating a little for some flexibility.
@@jayboy189 Hi mate, no problem. Firstly lose the curve shank hook. I know they are very popular but again I stopped using them years ago. I tried loads of patterns but no matter what I tried I found that they can make long cuts into the carp’s mouth before properly grabbing hold. That's why I and plenty of other commercial French venues ban them. By adding a kicker to a curve shank hook you've simply made the situation worse. Been there done that. Curve shank hooks also have a straight point. Straight pointed hooks are more prone to damage especially when fishing over gravel. I see this all the time at Beausoleil with guests as it’s very rocky and gravelly.
What you need are some quality Widegapes. The new Korda Kamakuras are deadly but a little too fragile for my work so I don’t use them much. I’m sure they would be a great choice for you though. Use a size 6 or even a 4 with your 18mm bottom bait. They are basically only good for one cast but, stick it in the right place and catching is just a matter of time. The new Nash claws are also excellent (that’s what I use). Not as sharp out the packet but a few deft strokes with a hone and they are also deadly. Try the size 6 with your 18mm bottom bait as the 4's are massive. I use them with 2x24mm bottom baits. If you’re fishing in flowing water or at max range then just use the coated material as is. For my fishing at Beausoleil I strip back 5-10mm just behind the knot closest to the hook. Then add a nice blob of putty. That way it creates a massive claw that's free to spin, twist and grab. This takes the rig to a new level.
Just as important as the hook and the hooklink is the lead system. If you’re fishing at range, use a lead clip system that dumps the lead effectively. That will automatically increase your hook to land ratio. For my short/medium range fishing at Beausoleil I use the Beausoleil lead system that can be made from a few simple, readily available bits and bobs. You probably already have everything you need. Set this up right and it’s phenomenally effective. Even for seriously pressured big carp with very hard mouths. Check out my other video here: ua-cam.com/video/ED58TfFEcqM/v-deo.html. Won't be going fishing now untill next week so will be testing this out for sure with this rig. I like to keep my lead so I do push the rubber all the way home on the lead clip but hopefully this should be fine I also want to have a rig like this as I like to keep my rig matireial as much as possible and for longer to save money on braids all the time and just generally going though so much of it. @@jayboy189 Hi mate. Do yourself and the carp a favour and don’t push the tail rubber on like that. I’ve found plenty of lost rigs over the years with the tail rubber pushed on like that. If you get snapped up or crack off, over time the tail rubber will literally weld itself to the leadclip. It’s then tether/death rig. I totally understand that for reasons of economy you don’t want to lose loads of leads which is why, in the main, I use lightly fixed running leads. There is another major downside to using a lead clip with the tail rubber pushed on tightly: you are costing yourself loads of chances just by doing that. I’ve seen it loads of times (and still do when guests don’t understand what the problem is) that’s why I invented the Beausoleil lead system. With a traditional semi fixed rig (i.e. a lead clip), the carp use the weight of the lead to throw the hook out 9 times out of 10. You're basically being done all the time! Yes mate, you're right, there are lots of easier ways to connect the boilie. I chose to show this method because it's less known and has a multitude of benefits: I could have just made a simple hair with the floss, threaded on a bait and mounted a bait stop. On many waters that's all you need but at my lake in the summer the roach are like piranha and bash the baits about so much that they can dislodge them. By mounting them in this way I'm more likely to still have a bait on the rig come the morning. I also use this method when fishing the river for the same reason but this time it's the chub and bream that are the problem. This method is also more secure when fishing at max casting range (130m). The floss spreads the impact load over a larger surface area than the hair stop which unless the bait is rock hard can get pulled into the bait. Cheers, Matt.

@@alanpartridge9549 haha I thought that bit was fairly easy lol. Secret is to cut off enough floss. Use at least 25cms. If all you need is something to thread a bait on just thread a loop of bait floss through a bait, stick a hair stop on then pop a tag end of floss though the swivel, tie the over hand knot with both tag end and pull down to the length you like. Do that step again to double secure, then blob. This is how I mount double baits.
Step 3. just the swivel put through the loop and you will have the same result with smaller loop.
Hi Karel, thanks for the comment. Yes, absolutely you can do this but you lose the interchangeability that a double loop to loop connection offers. Personally I’m not bothered about the large size of the loop at the swivel end but if that’s the way you prefer then cool. Cheers, Matt.

Just found this video, what a faff, could have fitted the swivel before the hook bait or before the hook, smaller loop, and why go through all that with the bait, pull floss through and blob with a lighter.
Can I use dental floss instead?
Hi mate, yes no issues using dental floss. I’ve used it in the past when I’ve run out of my normal stuff and it hasn't made a blind bit of difference. I do like my floss to have a little flex as it grips the bait better. Oral-B works well, as does the stuff Korda makes. Use whatever you've got and as long as the bait doesn't drop off, it’s job done ;)

I fish a range of waters from my own 4 acre estate lake, through to large public lake and rivers in France. On some of these waters I've fished I've had baits removed by others species while using the cut and blob method and other more conventional method such as hair stops. Hi Marisa, since I made this video I realised that an out turned (chod style) hook works best with this rig. If you are using heavy material like the 35lbs Nash Skinlink then I would recommend the Nash Chod Claw as it has a larger eye of any hook I’ve tested. The Nash Chod Twister works well too but they are better suited to the 25lb skinlink material. Cheers, Matt.
