  • The Amazon Kindle Timeline is a difficult one to understand. We have been in the business since around the same time people started catching wind about what the Kindle is. This video documents every single Kindle Amazon has ever made and talks about their effect on digital reading.
Check out this video to see everything from the 1st kindle all the way to the current Oasis 3
    Thanks so much everyone!

I remember it as, Amazon wanted all New Release books to be 9.99. Similar to how Apple wanted all digital songs to be .99 cents. I also remember at the time Publishers put their feet down and threatened not to put their books on Amazon if they did this. Soon after, Publishers got to name their own prices.

I have the Kindle 4 and the Kindle 8. The 4th, having analog buttons and no touch screen, no light, is the closest you get to a paper book. You don't accidentally touch the screen, and if you just read novels like me, it is still the best. I know it is slow to search for a word in the dictionary, but I take it as a learning process: you memorize the words better in the process. It is very well built, metallic on the front and rubbery on the back, very slim and sturdy, you feel the quality. It is nice to change pages actually with a physical button. I don't care about light or waterproof, who reads in a pool anyway, or in the dark, I just read pure text without distractions. So for me the 4th gen is my favorite.

I started carrying a purse again just to take it everywhere with me. I gotta say my biggest worry is ereaders becoming bigger as they make newer models. It's happened to phone and handheld games. Being portable doesn't mean just carrying it to places but being able to carry it comfortably! Hopefully ereaders stay a smaller size.

When e-readers first came out there was a lot of competition in the market. Each upgrade brought better hardware/software features and a sharper e-ink displays. The only one I didn't like was the first Kindle Touch. Back then, I would argue, the upgrades were always worth it. Once the Paperwhite came out though, I kept that for a number of years. Since then, I’m now 24 and have upgraded to a 2016 kindle paperwhite as of last year. I don’t see myself updating until this one breaks. If I want to use it in the tub I’ll use a plastic ziplock bag. The first e-reader I ever owned was the Kindle Touch back in 2012, and its battery life was amazing, even when reaching 0% you could still use it for a couple more days. After 7 and a half years of use, I decided to upgrade it to the 4th Kindle Paperwhite (Waterproof) recently this month, and I can't help but feel misgivings about its battery life compared to the Kindle Touch, maybe I was spoiled, but now I have to charge this thing roughly every other week, plus the sleep mode on it drains half of what's left if I leave it more than one day suspended, and the magnet cover contributes to that if I forget to turn it off entirely. Aside from the battery life, it is an improvement in every other aspect, but this newer model is giving me a hard time getting used to it...

The battery misgivings were not all true to be honest, it only took a few weeks for the battery to "settle in" since out of the box. Now it works just fine, battery lasts about 3 to 4 weeks and I'm very happy with it. You have a Oasis, my advice is that after a couple charges it'll work fine, it's only when they're new that the battery drains a bit faster. So it's OK.

What sort of customer base does the ereader appeal to these days, and is there significant growth potential there, considering the ubiquity of phones?

Voyage is the best; print is as sharp, razor sharp, and black as the print on a brand new newspaper. Then the Oasis 3's screen is the closest in size to an actual book. I just go back and forth between the two. I also have the first Oasis, but lost the evenly brightness lottery and reading on the dark is plain annoying, otherwise it's an excellent design. No better friend than a Kindle.

I got the Kindle Keyboard (3rd Gen then) in June of 2011 (my uncle got it from UK as they were not available in India then). My brother put his elbow on it and broke the screen and Amazon for some reason shipped me a brand new Kindle 4 for free all the way to India.
I used that for 1.5 years before it's screen also inexplicably broke.
My dad gifted me the first generation paperwhite in April 2013 which I used for about 3.5 years before upgrading to the 300 ppi white Kindle Paperwhite 3rd gen in Oct 2016. My dad took the old paperwhite.
And now 4.5 years later, the 3rd gen paperwhite is going strong.

Still going strong 11 years later, although I recently took it out of its OEM leather case and the case broke, so I'm now, after all of these years, riding bareback¬ 😱and loving it. There is a small scuff mark, on the front panel, near the Screen, but the longevity of this thing is amazing.
I'm weighing up whether, or not, to upgrade to the latest model, or to just get another case.

It's much thicker, which surprised me, the batteries aren't that improved, the screen quality and refresh speed are only negligibly quicker and the biggest thing, the plastics are very bad. The back part is slippery and often the device slips out of my hand. the front part attracts too many fingerprints whenever I touch the screen to changes. I like the kindle 10. I owned the original Kindle with free 3G. I got it after there was an Oprah promo discount (I think it was still $350). I think I've had 4 or 5 other models since. I currently have a Paperwhite and 2019 Oasis. Kindle still sucks for reading PDFs and word docs, but it is an excellent book reading experience. I have a remarkable tablet that is kind of crappy for books.
I want a relatively affordable all-in-one e-ink Android 10 tablet with a Snapdragon processor,, native Google Play, USB C charging and a stylus for note taking. So basically an upgraded Onyx BOOX Max3 with better pricing and better Google play software integration. Fingers crossed...

The special offers came about with the 4th gen Kindle. IIRC it was either $79 with special offers or $110 without. Something like that. I've had it since 2010 and it's the only ereader I've bought.

I bought one for around $10 a few months back in an old shop somewhere in Wales... turns out it's a gen 4 which seems to be the worst one, but I'm gonna try using it to see if I like eReaders.

Loved the video, however one thing you said stuck with me. You talked about Battery life and said it is pretty much the point of an ereader. I don't feel like that is the case tbh. It is important and great for sure, but I think the most important thing for an ereader is that it reads more like a real book and not like a digital screen that is backlit. Somehow, I think without that fact nobody would even want an ereader even if the thing lasted for 800 years. Unless we are talking end times. End times I want an 800 year device. :)

I bought a Kindle Keyboard in 2010 and it was the best one I've ever had. Easy to navigate and organise, 4G and I thought the battery life was reasonable. It lasted about 6 years and I'm a serial book-reader (no pun intended) None of the kindles I've had since could hold a candle to it. I still have it although, sadly, it no longer works

Edit: now have pw4 32gb model and loving it

I have the original Kindle with Box and the case. Along with Kindle 3, Kindle Paperwhite 2, Kindle Voyage, and Paperwhite 4. Over the years I believe quality control has gone downhill. I had to exchange my Voyage twice because the buttons wouldn't work. Now after 1 year I'm having problems with the Paperwhite 4 not registering my swips, and page turns. Or it jumps ahead 2-3 pages and I have to go back.

I have been choosing between PW 4 and Kobo Clara and I'm really happy I chose the Kobo. It is so much nicer, no ads, better front light. It manages to get the details right which make it so much nicer to use, the UI is great for reading not constantly showing into your face online features and stores, details like book cover from the book you are reading on the sleep screen. It is not waterproof but I would not trust any device which is waterproof but warranty doesn't cover the water damage. PDF support is not that great tho, but who the hell buys 6" ebook reader for PDFs. And the really important thing is the size, why is PW 4 so huge? It is bigger than many 7" devices. The only thing why would I consider PW 4 is the store, which is just best on the market.

I've had them all Including all the Sony models (yeah I'm an old fart). Truth be told, I don't like the flush screens. Just a couple months ago I bough my wife the Paperwhite while I bough myself the new basic. So, while I have tons of E-Readers hanging around the house I mostly use my Likebook Mars at home. I use my Kindle basic for travel (or my Jetbook Lite). Believe it or not the Jetbook Lite is still a capable E-Reader. I load it with 2800 mh AA's LiPo's and it has an incredible battery life With an very readable screen.

Although not used, I still have the 1st gen kindle purchased in May 2008 for $399. Not sure what I was thinking paying so much, but it does still work even today. The only thing that's degraded somewhat in its functionality is the scroll wheel. One thing is certain: the screensavers on the original are better than any that have come subsequently.

Watching this to see if it's worth upgrading from the 2010 gen 3 model and dam I'm pretty outdated as it turns out. Idk if I want the light tho? I like that the Kindle doesn't hurt my eyes over times unlike a phone, or is it different to that?
