Indeed. And this strategy did work to a large degree. They packed their ships with tons of missiles to compensate.

As a mechanical engineer, everthing I saw in this video regarding the submarine design, given the limits of their solid rocket missile design, makes lots of sense.

Soviet submarines only became relatively quiet in the mid-1980s, after the KGB got their hands on precision machine tools to make propellers in the West. Before that, they were the "Roaring Cows" of the ocean. You probably know the story, there's a lot written about it on the internet. If not, I plan to make a video about it in the future. For the Typhoon, the noise factor was also important, although her tactics were to stay under the ice in the Arctic, not patrol the American coast. Thanks for the comment.
The USSR obtained 9 axis milling machines in the 80s. It was Japanese technology funneled through a third country. The ships and submarines would go in to overhaul as relatively loud assets and come out much quieter. The difference was their screws (propellers) were sand cast and rough before but machined smooth with the new technology therefore much quieter. The Japanese company that sold us out is Toshiba. I remember going to the Navy Exchange after the news came out and all Toshiba products had been unceremoniously removed from the shelves. If you want more info look up the Toshiba-Kongsberg scandal.

It should also be mentioned that Russian surface vessels continue to provide the absolute worst living conditions for their sailors. With many finding it impossible even to shower on board during deployment.

Interesting that the Russia theories changed. Before it was produce a good relabel weapon that was easy to make and maintain, like AK RPG and T72.

If the songbirds die you know you have a problem. Extra crew amenities were propaganda. Go big or go home. It was a clever idea that worked, but at great cost.

I disagree. For me, it's the only modern (post WWII) submarine that actually looks cool, with the conning tower to the back the boat has a very elegant line. Most other submarines look like, well, just another a boat that goes under water. This one looks like something out of a sci fi movie.
