What is Vector Displacement in Blender? (Get ready for Nodevember)

- Confused by Blender vector displacement? Don't worry about the math: we'll make it intuitive and simple.
In this quick CG Cookie intro tutorial by Chris Bailey (@CBaileyFilm ) you will learn how to generate geometry using nothing but a shader.
That is the basic idea: using color to "fake" geometry and shape or bend your material.
Chris will show you how to take an ordinary plane and turn it into an animated ocean wave using a single shader. We'll take an artist's approach to get you up and running in the most intuitive way possible.
You might even start to enjoy vector displacement - who knew it was possible!

I like seeing how you work with nodes. I find them so confusing but this has cleared up a few things for me.
Can't wait for Nodevember 😆
Agreed, it's shaping up to be a great one.
So glad you provided this info! Thank you!
HSV actually stands for Hue / Saturation / ‘Value’ en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/HSL_and_HSV I’m not quite sure why. Other parts of Blender also use ‘value’ to describe brightness
the vector displacment brush in blender woulld be so cool....
Lot to digest, nicely presented. Noob question: a compound curve along Y? I think it would be Y, not sure.
Hell Yeah!!
Nodevember this year is going to be a lot of fun
I love the blender rabbit hole. (out of context that sounds very scetchy haha )
Respect🙋♂️👌 I really admire your work and the way you teach stunning stuff in blender👍
Awe... thanks! You're not too bad yourself. Happy Blending!🍪
I shall use the info to lead my renders to vectory!
Kudos.
Great video😎
love your work
Awesome explanation of vector displacements! Thanks!
u explain it very well for the new dudes joining blender , if anyone complains , call me , imma bump these dudes xD
Cool i would like to see more examples on how it can be applied, i know its used alot in VFX and the same principles can be applied to create effects in other engines like unreal or unity
Thank you so much, this is the tutorial I needed to understand vector displacement !
thank you so much for your great tutorials! :)
MOAR!!!!!!!
You spent far more time wiring nodes than on vector displacement. Just use an iimage. Not knowing about adaptive subdivision was why I gave up on this technique. Thanks for the tip
Excellent! Man, it always impresses me how people (and Software Engineers) work this out. -*ps. Software Engineers are people too. ;)
I didn t know you could overhang, cool
👍👍, it's so powerful......I will try it
carton water so easy!cool
That is a great video.... Now I'm ready for nodevember 😍 (but I wont) 😊
Thanks for the video
I'm an active studet of Blender and a surfer. I would gladly pay for a "Add-on" that create a surfing wave that peels off a point or a peak that could be animated.
Are we going to get a Blender film review of Sprite Fright? PLEASE
very usefull
Great video!
My question is, could you create a tsunami wave entering a beach or a city to destroy it out of this?
Me who learned this and done this in my pc:
*makes something with this
My pc:
ALRIGHT EVERYONE TIME FOR A TAKEOFF FLIGHT TO GET EXPLODED
My pc temperature: hot lava
Amazing 😍😍
so good...
Awesome
Any idea on the pros and cons, as far as final rendering times and image quality?
Sorry to ask, but do you plan to have a discount sale on the Blender Market in the near future? I kinda want the retopoflow, but my budget is not scaling well on the Z axis these days >:(
We'll typically particpate in the Blender Market cyber weekend offering. 👍 That's just about a month away!
@@cg_cookie thanks, very nice :)
woooooooouuuuu!!!!
it is powerful but all the nodes discombobulate you
I'm new to Blender and I have been watching a lot of your videos, love the content and the way present everything. Regarding this Wave though, from the tip through the concave section till the end, we should have a more smooth texture, since the water is being pulled and sort of stretching the mass of the ocean, or something in those lines right? Is it possible to blend between textures on the same plane?
it's when you take the vectors and push them over there
is there a visual feedback for texture coordinates?
Wouldnt using a rgb curve node be a lot easier??
Can be use geometory nodes for next month?
Those are not mountains..... Those are waves!
helloo! thank very much for your tutorial, im thinking maybe you can help me, please. im doing these type of animations with displacement maps in nodes graphics but I need to export my animated to mesh to a format like fbx with the animation integrated, I want to open these on unity. Do you know how can I do? best thanks
Hi there I am trying to learn houdini and blender geometry nodes system but I am finding it really hard and confusing . If I get a basic Idea of Node.Js will it help me in blendee and houdini node base Animations .
Is this a lot better for rendering time than using actual geometry?
Probably just a little worse. It's for the challenge of creating something with just nodes
Stop swirling your mouse like crazy, please. Just pointing at a specific place is enough. Thank you.
It is a donut.
Are you British or Canadian?
