Starting around 2002 Maynard stays in the back.... Currently the only way you will see him as the typical "front man" performing is at a puscifer concert, and it is awesome. That baby mask cracks me up every time I watch this video

He makes the best costume. Yes. In '93 after I saw them the first time. Maynard was in a unitard and then a nut sack.

Maynard’s comments on being in the back during concerts are based on acoustics for him. He wants to be able to hear and see the other guys better. He says being up and in the back help him give a better performance.
Is Maynard always in the back? No, not always... There are also videos of him performing at the front of the stage. There's even a video where he performs some Brazilian jiu-jitsu (throw and choke hold) on a pushy drunk or high fan...
That was some 25 years ago or something, though :D
