My name is Bre. I took two years of small engine repair at the local college. When I left school, I fell into a wonderful job at a local small engine shop where I worked the counter for a couple years. In 2010 my husband and I opened up our own small engine shop in central Arkansas where I am able to work alongside my family and best friends. We see over 2,000 pieces of small engine equipment every year, and answer 1,000's of small engine questions. We specialize in brands such as Briggs and Stratton, Kohler, Echo and Shindaiwa, but work everyday on MANY other brands like Stihl, Husqvarna, Honda, Craftsman, Remington, Red Max, Troy Bilt, Scag, Bad Boy, Hustler, World Lawn, Poulan, Mantis, Etc.. Hopefully, my experience I share, will save you Time, Money and Frustration in the future!

I just got one like that running too. A "mechanic" told them they needed a new engine, so they parked it-----5years ago. It was given to me last fall, but I didn't have time to look at it then. Pulled it in a couple weeks ago and found it had a bad cam lobe. Thirty dollars and six hours later, [forgive me, I'm 71 years young], I hit the starter and it came right to life and is one of the quietest mowers I have around here. I still have to do the deck, it's got grape vines growing through it and put a tube in one of the tires, but it's going to be worth around a grand here in Michigan. I don't have a bagger either, which would be worth 500 more here. Love your videos and have learned a few things along the way.

A lot of the problems with camshafts is improperly ground lifters. The lifters have to have a crown ground on the end that mates to the camshaft. Also the cam lobes are ground with a slight taper so as it turns it spins the lifter as it raises the valve. Some lifters are ground flat and that's what wipes out the lifter. The lifter is being hit in the same spot.

When I was in the RV and mobile home repair business, I used to do just that with awnings. Save good awning arms, awning tubes and other hardware to make a new old awning to sell.
The only thing that was never salvageable was the awning fabric. But replacement fabric was relatively cheap and labor to install was only two hours. I made money off old salvageable parts and saved customers money for a replacement awning.

That should be completely fine even today. I feel like the warning is more for newer equipment and newer users of equipment. I picked up a new push mower a couple years ago, and it has a big 10W30 sticker on it, which if followed could lead to people even putting synthetic oil into a mower. If they follow the engine manual, it won't be much of a problem as the manual tells people how often to change the oil. The trouble comes if people think putting the oil in is a once and done procedure and just use it until it has nothing left to give. It's why I prefer straight 30W oil, as I feel it is made more for small engines and is a little more forgiving if one doesn't change the oil as promptly as the manual requires.

I once had a riding mower & always put straight 30 in it for 15 years with no problems & I decided to put a synthetic oil in it and before I new it it had ran out of oil & locked the engine up, I think the synthetic evaporated because the engine never leaked or burned a drop until I put the synthetic in.

Thanks for your many videos. I couldn't find a video where you worked on a Kawasaki FH480V-BS20 engine, but thought you might have some wisdom nonetheless. The other day my mower it seemed like it wanted to stall at idle. I thought it might be out of gas, so I walked it to my driveway and took off the gas cap while it was still running, but it still had almost a half tank. Hmmm. Following your advice from a few days ago, I manually shut off the fuel supply instead of turning off the switch. It usually keeps running for a few minutes, but this time it died within a few seconds. Double-hmmm.
Today, thinking about your advice about water in the gas 70 percent of the time, I drug it back out onto the driveway and sucked a few cups of fuel out of the tank and into a pan. It looked okay to me, but I didn't put it back in the tank anyway. I then started it up and let in run at idle for about half an hour. Seemed to run fine. I then turned off the fuel, and today it ran for several more minutes before it ran out of gas, just as it normally does.
So I don't know what to do next...it has a fuel pump, Kawasaki PN 49040, so I thought I might replace or rebuild that, but it seems to have been discontinued. I then searched for generics, but kept seeing pumps with three ports, while mine has only two visible ports.
This engine is on an old Better Outdoor Products "Quick-36 Samurai" hydro walk-behind mower. It's an old machine, but I've never mowed more than five suburban yards per week with it, so it doesn't have the kind of hours on it that it would if it was in commercial service, so I feel like it could last a long time if I could just figure out how to get parts for it.
Any ideas on what might have happened, and/or what to do next? I swear I'd bring it to you, if only you were closer!

I’ve got a Briggs 21 hp v-twin in my shop with a huge hole in the side of the block. I have another 16 hp single OHV Briggs that need a governor replaced. Briggs OHV engines have a lot of problems. I try to avoid them on my own equipment. The absolute worst I’ve ever seen though are the single cylinder Kohler Courage - the “bucket” engines.

Great videos as always and always appreciate the help you give. I need help, 159cc craftsman push mower. New 3 years ago. Last year started running for 10 minutes then dies. Wait ten minutes, will run then die again after 10 minutes. Took to local repair shop, needed new. Carb, $240 later ran great all year. Second time mowing this year and it started doing something, please help can't seem to find video on your channel.

Until a few weeks ago I had an Ariens with the infamous 17.5HP B&S engine. The automatic compression release on that engine (cam) would break about every 2 years just like clockwork. It is currently on its third cam. I always changed the oil every 25 hours and used Mobil-1 synthetic 10W-30. Every time the ACR broke it munged up the governor gear and even with repairing it myself the parts were around $120. I will never purchase another machine of any kind with a single cylinder B&S engine.

Usually, if everything is up to snuff, you can get 60% of retail price.
    So, 60% of $3000 = $1800.
Take $1750 or bottom line $1500.
Not a bad profit if you're not counting your labor.

    • @seanthompson8071

Most modern engine oils that have the latest SAE ratings will be low on zinc & phosphorous. Consider using an HDEO oil (Chevron Delo & Shell Rotella are 2 of them) which are affordable and readily available in 10W30 ... the most common weight for OPE.
