We owned the 2008 version of this car for several years, until my wife accidentally drove it over an embankment. It's probably the best car we'll ever own. I discovered that when ordering dealer parts, try to get them through Toyota rather than Lexus. They use the same engine, but there's an extra hundred bucks of luxury tax tied to anything Lexus. I paid $40 for an OEM block heater at Toyota, it was $150 at our local Lexus dealer, for the exact same part and exact same part number. The thing about their battery cooling fan is the way the motor will die and electronic components will overheat if you get the intake plugged with dog hair, etc. The intake is close to where the dogs would sit in the back. I've heard of other difficulties with that cooling fan, it seems to be a vulnerable point. On learning that I routinely cleaned out the blower intake. Brilliant diagnostics, Chad!
I never had much of an issue with hair in the inlet vents even though I have a golden retriever until Valerie started taking her parents lab on the morning hikes. That lab sheds 10x more hair than my golden does and now all the nooks and crannies are filled with lab hair. Our 07 highlander is by far my favorite vehicle. Great economy and tons of horsepower. More HP and torque than the tundra from the same year range. I’m afraid I’ll have to locate another one just like it if anything ever happened to it. I like the look of the new Toyota Venza but haven’t driven one yet. I don’t know if they offer a V6 hybrid anymore and the 4 cylinder hybrids are disappointing in the Colorado mountain passes.
Very informative video Chad. In general I find that it seems the quality and quantity of good service info available to you lucky technicians in the U.S. is far superior to what we get here in the U.K. To be able to correctly diagnose and repair such an infrequent failure must feel very satisfying indeed. I’m sure you have acquired genius status in the eyes of your customer with this one 👍
I appreciate that! I have not had the pleasure of testing any service information providers from across the pond but I often here that the information is lacking. Is it the lack of providers or just poor information from the vehicle manufacturer?
I’d say mainly a lack of providers of the depth and quality of info that we often need. We don’t have anything that equals your ‘right to repair’ legislation either!
Great job again man! I find it crazy that the dealer condemned an interior wiring harness rather than the fans. Surely they knew about the fan issue. It's there in the service info., just not under that particular model, although it's the same problem with the same effect. The power of sharing info again helps us to fix these cars. I've noticed all dealerships declining in accurate diagnosis these days. I believe most dealership techs don't utilize a scope. I kinda get it though, I believe they're not getting paid for diag time so they tend to replace parts. Anyway, thanks again for the lesson. Awesome job!
I agree. I couldn’t believe it either the first time the car showed up. And as I expected, there was zero corrosion issues. We are overwhelmed with new customers who are leaving the dealerships because of poor customer service and lack of quality repairs.
You are a great technician and Your videos are very well argued, I like your modesty and it seems good to me to test the CAN communication lines by activating the components, thanks for being there
Thank you very much! I wish I would have though about activating components on the first visit but it is jot something that normally causes issues. It will be a test I perform in the future when I’m fighting communication issues.
if you fix the p3105 issue and clear all the code the c1546 shouldn't come back. The c1546 code is just a code in the power steering module stating that there is an issue with the HV battery.
Díaz. Not yet. Let me get on it. Can you please help identify a merchant that has the part available. My local dealership do not have the fans in stock.
I have a 2007 rx400h with a p3105 code, Lexus wanted to charge $1000 just to remove the rear seat. I don’t have all the nice testing tools so I assumed the hybrid batteries were getting hot. Turns out the previous owner had a dog in the car anytime he went for a ride. Located and found the vents, Cleaned them, assumed the fans were faulty so changed them out, haven’t had the problem since.
Service info is pretty terrible most days, especially when you spend more time going through multiple sources and they differ from each other or theyre both incorrect. Which happens more lately for whatever reason. I mean fixing some of these things is difficult enough, but there cant be guessing when it comes to wiring. Manufacturers should just face the fact that not everyone is going to bring their vehicle to a dealership. Just give us the info we need to do an already difficult job. Thanks for another great video. Sorry for my rant.. No one else understands it except other techs.
It’s a daily occurrence for diagnostic and repair technicians alike. I have found different torque specs listed for Subarus depending on what provider I use. It makes it difficult to accurately diagnose and repair for sure.
Thank you very much for your video and sharing your knowledge with us. It sure seems like the dealerships are pushing us right out of repairing our cars especially using used computer parts. I also am getting into the key cutting and immo aspect, eeprom work. I believe we are going to have to get creative on work arounds to help people out. It sure does cost alot to keep up. Be safe out there and God Bless!!!
More and more obsolete parts daily. Many good vehicles are going to leave the road because parts are no longer available. I’m really worried about the 2020-2023 vehicle build quality. I think those vehicles are going to be a nightmare for reliability. Part shortages and labor shortages will likely reveal many defects in production.
Thanks for another great video, Chad. I’d love to hear your take on your new Launch tablet/scope once you’re more comfortable using it. I’m sure it’s nowhere near as good as a Pico or Snappy but maybe it’s a decent value. Thanks again!
I will continue to use it and hopefully become fluent in the operation of the scope and multimeter. The scantool is very similar to previous launch platforms so I’m somewhat used to the terminology and operation of that side of the tool. I will have more videos for sure using this tool.
I feel your pain and frustration Sir. As far as Dodge or FCA vehicles are the absolute worst. I've encountered OE wiring diagrams be completely wrong and the Non-OE be accurate. I've also seen instances of the SI being different if you search using the VIN instead of the YMME. Even though the VIN populated the same Year Make Model Engine. And I'm constantly submitting library requests for connector views and locations. I've seen a OE diagram for a Lincoln be missing important foot notes that was only included when viewed through Ford tech site and were not available on the same diagram viewed through aftermarket sources. I feel all of that. But I'm glad you touched on the fact that the aftermarket SI is only as good as what the OE presents to them for publication. I know for a fact ALLDATAs information is almost an exact carbon copy of the OE information including specs and illustrations. But being in the aftermarket where we work on EVERY make, it's incredibly difficult to keep ALL that information current and up to date. It sucks but it's the reality of the business unfortunately. So just like the situation where not one aftermarket scan tool can do everything you need and you would be progressive to have one or two different ones available; so does it go with the aftermarket Service Information.
I honestly wish I had instant access to all aftermarket and OEM service site but the cost is just too much. I am fortunate to have access to prodemand, alldata and identifix. I will occasional pay for OEM if I’m struggling to find the correct information. In this situation I had no reason to believe the information would have changed or I would have paid for the dealer access. Live and learn I suppose.
Chad, I got curious and looked up this DTC on Toyota TIS. The oem information differs from what you showed coming from alldata. It made mention of the blower motor, had the hints, and pretty much mirrored the info you found on the highlander hybrid. The document also showed that it was updated 8-23-22. The alldata information likely reflected an outdated document that lacked the information necessary for accurate diagnosis. Dealer technicians have the ability to submit repair manual corrections and this change was a probably a result of that.
Where can I find a battery replacement for my Lexus RX400h? I kindly request your assistance, as my car has been parked for almost a year due to a battery issue.
@@matthewdeck3246 absolutely. Original HV battery and 205k miles so far. No oil usage, no codes, no problems other than getting hail damage last summer.
Hi, thanks for the video. Same auto, code, symptom.... I'm thinking fan,.or fans as well.... But the dealer in your case diagnosis was harness.... My symptoms happened twice in 600 miles.... Thinking cleaning is first step,... Would you agree? Thanks.
I think the dealer was wrong. It only happened during longer drives where the cooling fans would likely reach full speed. I would use a scantool to command the fans on high speed and see if the code resets.
Very good video I have already complained to Mitchell and to all data about some of their material I've done extensive homework and find out that the following year sometimes would be exactly Dead on where the information was missing on the year I was looking things up plus through the years I've seen a lot of data it's written totally wrong
Great video, thanks for the info. BTW what was the problem with the dodge ? I have one dodge what has the same problem and we have now new valvebody pressure sensor and ps-sensor connector... and still acting 2-3 times in month..
The harness was rubbed through on the transmission dipstick tube bracket. After doing some preliminary testing I found that the control circuit was intermittently grounded even when the computer wasn’t commanding it. On the lab scope while driving it looks like the transmission controller was supplying a duty cycle to the solenoid. But in actuality, the computer normally just varies the voltage to the solenoid and does not duty cycle it. When I first saw the duty cycle wave form. I assumed it was normal. The duty cycle was that wire vibrating against the transmission dipstick bracket. This truck was setting codes every couple of months for the solenoid. When the problem started happening daily they dropped it off and I was able to figure it out.
Nice video and ya i agree i think the fans pulling to much current used to work if FL on shuttle busses and the condensor fans would go out due to over use and i hate hate when service info is spotty i mean its supposed to be used to help you but you still have to reverse engineer a system 😮💨
I feel like service information has been getting worse and worse. I suppose if I would have interviewed the customer better I may have found out that the issue only happened after driving under load for a while and maybe they would have mentioned the increased noise from the fans. Those condenser fans on shuttle busses can be a nightmare. Let’s run 4 high output condenser fans on one 40 amp relay and then install the relay behind the overhead AC unit cover so you have to search for it. Plus the condenser fan wiring will not be sealed up so it always gets corroded. 🤦🏼♂️
