NARROWBOAT Living - How do we get OFF this LOG?! DEBRIS in the canal! Ep84

  • This week’s vlog sees us cruising our NARROWBOAT floating home from Foxton, along the Market Harborough Arm of the Grand Union canal. A couple of days before, we had been to BoatLife at Birmingham with our friends from Narrowboat Spudley, this is in a separate video, Episode 81, link below. Firstly, Julie has many huge puddles to negotiate, whilst walking to the road swing bridge. The bridge is renowned for being a really tough cookie and it definitely was! Luckily a boater walking his dog, doubled back to help and thank goodness he did too! After this, we had quite an EVENTFUL JOURNEY, what with lots of water coming off the land and detritus in the water……and speaking of the water, just look at the colour of it!! Martin can’t resist hitting that double hooter! 🙉 We have a huge bough of a tree right across our path that proves quite difficult to dislodge, but working together, we conquer the art of ‘LOGGING OFF’! There’s branches and logs galore, lots of DEBRIS, as we weave our way down to Market Harborough basin, where getting water is not straight forward and we find out there’s no room to moor either! We get a little frustrated by the mooring situation, but in the end, does our patience pay off and can we get moored…..?
    Hope you enjoy this week’s vlog! xx😃

      Hiya Nicholas! We love seeing your comment every week, we feel that we have a ‘UA-cam family’, a lovely group of friends, we feel so lucky! 🥰 Martin does really look after the boat well, he’s very careful when driving and we’re always conscious not to scrape the boat into bushes and trees. But with regard to our boat looking nice, thank you! Our boat only has two polishes a year, the rest of the time and most days, Martin uses a leather to wipe the boat down with water only. Have a lovely week, see you next time! xx

    That's the best view of Electra that I have seen. Usually I just see the bow. I love that color. 😊 It was definitely a gorgeous day but the canal and the towpath were really a mess. It really does looks like spring is on the way. I've got crocus and daffodils up and soon there will be yard work. 🙄 That's the bad part of spring in a house. ❤

      Hi Dorothy, Electra is a beautiful boat! It was definitely an eventful cruise, what with all the debris and water coming into the canal, and the colour of that water! 😳 It is lovely when everything starts springing into life and nature starts to wake up, but yes like you say, it means you’ll need to start tending to the garden again! Thank you Dorothy, we look forward to your comment each week xx

      @@JulieandMartinonRIB Thanks. ❤ I love the color. First time I'd seen the pink hat. 😊 Yardwork 'ruins' so much of the year. I have so much cleanup to do but want to wait as long as possible because critters will be nesting under the pile of limbs and in the yard. I don't like to mow till the dandelions are gone because they support bees. 🐝

    Stunning view at the end there - made the stress of mooring worthwhile. It must be so frustrating when boats leave huge gaps in between which waste space but not enough to moor in. Very thoughtless. The canal looked like liquid mud - horrible, plus of course all that mud and silt will eventually drop and clog up the canals. Between that and all the tree debris it’s no wonder so much dredging is needed. I’m constantly amazed how shiny and clean your boat looks despite the muddy water and rain! Have a great week guys xx

    Hi Julie, Hi Martin
    Seeing how much soil has washed into the canals from the fields, do you not have to wonder how much fertilizer is being washed into the canals as well. If that is true then the fertilizer will encourage the growth of water plants causing the canals to become overgrown in weeds.
    The soil being washed into the canals also gets me thinking about how much good soil the farmers are losing.
    Mark
    Alberta, Canada

    • @JulieandMartinonRIB
      @JulieandMartinonRIB  6 місяців тому

      Hi Mark, you’re right, there’s so much being washed into the canals which as you say will accelerate weed growth and also silt up the channel too! We’ve had so much rain though, it’s unbelievable, the ground is so waterlogged! Hopefully drier weather is on the way 🤞 so things will start to get better. Thank you so much Mark! xx

    Lovely video this week! Some of the swing bridges on the L&L are devilishly hard to swing. And every single one seems to have a different configuration: all manual, all electric, manual gates but electric swing, electric gates, manual swing. I am loving and addicted to your vlogs, so relaxing and peaceful. Brilliant the way you incorporate black and white still photos. Please explain " toe paths" or is that " tow paths" obviously a narrow boat term. How easy is it to steer, I would think it's a real knack.. God Bless from New Zealand. Aroha and Kia ora

    • @JulieandMartinonRIB
      @JulieandMartinonRIB  6 місяців тому

      Hi Adrian, thank you for this lovely comment, can’t help thinking this may have been meant for our friends ‘One Day More Aboard’ as they use the b&w photos, but am hoping you find our vlogs relaxing too. The term ‘towpath’ refers to the now ‘footpath’ that runs alongside the canals. In the old days when the original traditional narrowboats did not have powered engines, they used horses to tow them from the path, hence the term towpath. The canals have been here hundreds of years, before trains and powered engines and were used for transporting goods around the country. There’s a lot of history on the canals, as they were used primarily for industry, whereas today they are for leisure use. With regards to steering a narrowboat, it does get some getting used to at first lol, but they pivot in the middle, so once you get a feel for the pivot it becomes easier, you push the tiller to the right if you want to go left, and to the left if you want to turn right. Hopefully this makes sense and we really hope to hear from you again soon. Thanks Adrian, from Julie and Martin xx

      Good day Julie,
      Considering what the CRT have to work with and the vast size of their territory, they really do a decent job. Unfortunately upper management seems to be the issue in so many situations.
      I really hope that they either chip the branches and logs of wood up or use it i some friendly manner.
      Safe journey,
      Mark@@JulieandMartinonRIB

      @@markrant1460 yes, they do a great job. Often they chop the larger boughs up into fair size pieces and leave them by the towpath for boaters to use with their log burners, and other times they shred it and add it to the ground under and between the trees. Really hoping for a dry spell if weather without these high winds we are now getting! 🫣 Thanks! xx

      Good to hear that the wood is not wasted.
      Be careful what you ask for when it comes to weather. Remember how hot it got last summer lol?As for us right now we have about 2 feet of snow and have just gone through a cold spell of about -20. This next week will be much warmer and in the + temperatures.

    Is your boat electric, only it's very quiet when you talk to, Martin. What camera are you using, only you don't appear to get a lot of shake without a gimbal!

      Hi Nigel, thank you! Our boat is not electric, it has a Beta Marine 43 diesel engine with a hospital silencer, so that’s a lovely compliment! I only use my old iPhone 11 Pro Max to film with, which seems to be ok, I really wouldn’t know where to start with action cameras, so will stick to this for a while yet 🤪. I do have a bridge camera which I use for stationery close up shots of wildlife, but don’t get to use that whilst moving. Thank you so much! xx
