  • Shogun: Lord Yoshi Toranaga (Lord Of The Kwanto; Lord Of The Eight Provinces; Chief Daimyo; played by Toshiro Mifune) continues his war cry speech to his Samurai Warriors in Yedo, Japan. Toranaga makes Anjin-San (Pilot-Major John Blackthorne played by Richard Chamberlain) a Samurai Warrior, after Anjin-San saved Lord Toranaga’s life on several occasions. Lord Toranaga gives Anjin-san a Fishing Village in the south of Yedo, Japan, the right to recruit 200 Samurai Retainers, 10 Horses, and 20 Kimonos, and a Special Katana Sword, made by the Master Craftsman, Yoriya. You, Anjin-san, you are now... Samurai!
Shogun, the novel, was written by James Clavell. The masterpiece television miniseries was directed by Jerry London, screenplay by Eric Bercovici, and Andrew Laszlo as Director Of Photography. There was an A-List Cast, an A-List Director, an A-List Musical Score from Maurice Jarre, and A-List production with amazing sets and intricate costumes, detailed in that time era.
There is a new Shogun coming out on the FX Channel in February 2024, but honestly, I do not see how any version of Shogun can top this amazing production of excellent cinematography. If you haven’t seen Shogun (Directed by Jerry London), you ought to watch it and enjoy the beauty and quality of this masterpiece.

Hai, DavidColeman2796-San. Very Keen and Excellent Observation and Point. It was an incredibly smart move for Toranaga to trap Blackthorne into obedience, but it worked. It is such a hidden nuance, that I don't know if many could see Toranaga's planning, even then. Excellent Comments! Arigatou Gozaimashita.

It's beneficial for Anjin as well. Now with new found status, he will not be dragged like a dog or treated like horse dung in comparison to the previous episodes. He may be a tool, but a tool with a sword and a rank to enforce it.

I only heard about the new Shogun miniseries about 3 or 4 weeks ago and I can't wait for it to come out. If it's half as good as the original it will a huge success. And having Hiroyuki Sanada in the lead role is a fitting tribute to Toshiro Mifune, who was one of the finest actors of any generation or country. I must have read Shogun 4 or 5 times before the miniseries came out and it sparked an interest in Japan and its culture that continues right up until today. So many great movies, Yojimbo, The Hidden Fortress, Seven Samurai and all those greats. Coming to Japan is # 1 on my bucket list. Primarily it is to see my favorite musical groups on their home turf. I turned 76 this year, so it will have to happen within the next year or so.

I think, possibly, because Toranaga was a Lord, that he didn't address the people under him with "San" or "Sama". Also, he never did address Mariko as "Mariko-San", but simply "Mariko." I think perhaps this was in VHS video era, not HD 4K. The producer might have decided to put a bit more sparkle to make it more enjoyable to non-Japanese audience. Debating about costume is like comparing classical music played on modern instrument vs period instrument.

I'm comparing this scene to the 2024 version, while Sanada does give a good performance, Mifune's version wins with very little effort.
    1. Everyone (who aren't familiar with the novel, the newbies to Shogun due to the 2024 version) are speculating that Toranaga's smile/laugh in the scene (2024 version) where Blackthorne offers his swords (Fujiko's) is because Toranaga knows the true history of those swords. I look at it and see it as Toranaga is smiling at how Blackthorne is coming to understand a bit more about their culture and relationship between lord and retainer.
    2. In the comparison of these two scenes where Toranaga rewards Blackthorne, Toshira Mifune delivers his speech with more flair. Mifune's Toranaga would be better at rallying and raising the morale of his troops better than Sanada's.
    3. This scene is where Blackthorne officially becomes a Samurai. Before he was only Hatamato.
4.The giving of the swords is better done in the 1980 version. The 2024 version has Toranaga indicating to Blackthorne to take the swords and that's it. No explanation, no words, nothing. It's like the giving of the swords is not important. And 1980 Blackthorne has a better understanding and appreciation for what he is given.
This scene is another pivotal moment for Blackthorne. Now, everyone else has to truly recognize that he is now a samurai and their 'equal', in terms of the respect and deference they must show each other.

Excellently stated and logically presented, ALwinDigital-San. I agree: Toranaga's smile in Shogun 1980 included silent innuendos, of Toranaga knowing the history of the swords. Hai, Toshiro Mifune is super powerful, both in speech presentation and troop motivation: He is a true leader, as you excellently said, rallying his troops for battle. Motivating. And the giving of the swords in Shogun 2024 is practically meaningless. Becoming a Samurai was a life-changing event, and Shogun 1980 properly displayed this. I agree: Very much a pivotal moment in the novel, and in Anjin-San's life and walk. Great comments. Arigatou Gozaimashita.

Horses and silk kimonos were extremely valuable commodities.
Livestock was used as a measure of wealth in pretty much all ancient cultures. Even still so today in many third world countries.

20 kimonos from Toranaga. Those would be pure silk, and worth a fortune.

Hai, Lechiffre-San. That appears to be a War Cry or Battle Cry of Lord Toranaga. It is used to motivate the Samurai Soldier Warriors, and prepare them for battle. Similar cries can be found among different cultures. This Battle Cry was also done, differently, in Shogun 2024. Arigato.
