FILM DESCRIPTION:
After standing in as a female model for a painting by his wife Gerda (Alicia Vikander), Danish artist Einar Wegener (Eddie Redmayne) becomes enamored with his feminine identity and begins living as a woman named Lili Elbe. Although their marriage becomes strained, Gerda stands by Lili as she explores her true self and eventually undergoes one of the world's first gender-reassignment surgeries in the 1930s. This touching biopic was adapted from David Ebershoff's book of the same name, and helmed by director Tom Hooper (The King's Speech).

okaminess That's harsh, and untrue. Gerda's work was mostly erotica, and were considered too controversial for the time. Einar painted landscapes. That, coupled with the fact that he was a man back then, it's not hard to see why he was more successful.

Lili was always inside Einar. Einar said that he thinks Lili's thoughts and dreams Lili's dreams. Einar suppressed Lili within him. Einar doing feminine things awakened Lili more and more everyday. He didn't turn into a woman, she just finally accepted herself.

HE never turned into a woman. You can't TURN into a woman. He is a he and remained a he and tried to act and look like one. And the woman he supposedly loved and promised to care for had her heart broken in the meantime. HE tried to go the final step and took it too far into surgery and died because of it. Why can't people be happy with themselves? Fine. Look like a woman. You're not one. You have obligations and duties to your wife and she was more selfless than he ever was in their marriage.

Some men like dresses and more feminine things, it's because of gender roles that that's not socially accepted, and thus, men think they need to transition. But that doesn't make them women.

After reading up about the real story it’s actually much much sadder and not a happy ending for gerda lily passed from a womb operation but gerda spiralled into depression after lily died gerda is the epitome of true love and I am sad lily couldn’t love her back because Mân or woman gerda was there for her thorough everything even when she was being hurt. Love this movie, but wish they were more faithful with the ending. And not so abrupt
I agree so much. Lilli was brave, yes. (And please don't kill me but-) I think she was a little selfish and unfair to Gerda. She only thought about her own happiness. And well, has she never thought, What about Gerda?
I read that both Lily and gerda were both homosexuals, (lesbians) so they still loved each other even after Lily did her surgery

maria ordoñez I don’t know why we have to apologise for our opinions anymore. Just because we’re saying that Lili is selfish, doesn’t translate homophobia. Sometimes you just don’t like a person for the things they do, not for what they are.

This was, by far, Mr. Redmayne's most strong and heartbreaking performance of his career.

Now I don’t know what to think of Eddie...except for that he is an outstanding actor! He has been part of the wizarding world, became a girl because he needed to, and also won an Oscar for best actor! Great job, Eddie! Your family’s proud!

People did had an issue with him playing a trans character. This movie came out three or four years ago. That may not seem like a lot of time but for trans rights a lot of things change. And I feel the only issue is that the trans community have more of a voice compared to when this movie first came out. Another thing that is important is that throughout most of the movie Lili was pre op. So having a cisgender male wasnt that big of a deal since the real lili never took estrogen or have surgery until the end and that was only to remove her genetalia.
Quinn Samuels Same with character Johansson was going to portray. The real person was androgynous and didn’t go on hormones or have top surgery. So all the hate that the movie was getting really wasn’t justified. They’re aren’t many actors that are trans that haven’t transitioned.
Ariana Leras Okay that is true but Johansson looks nothing like this character. The character had a very large built which help their masculine look. Plus I believe its the factor that hollywood have an issue with transpeople playing cisgender roles. But when it comes to trans roles their still being represented by cis gender people. It's the aspect that they feel that they are prevented from doing most work and what little they received goes to cis gender actors. But again this role didn't have it's issue. Even though I love this movie, it should have went to a trans women.
Quinn Samuels You see that’s the unrealistic expectation. There are very few trans woman or men in Hollywood that haven’t transitioned. In this role the actor had to be comfortable being male presenting for the first half of the movie (which may be triggering for dysphoria) and had to look somewhat male. In Johansson’s case no one has cared about body type much in the past and while casting is evolving it’s a bit hypocritical. Trans actors should play trans characters but it’s difficult in cases when the character isn’t transitioned. Take the Broadway show Hedwig and The Angry Inch. The character is usually played by a male even though the character identifies as female, but since she hasn’t transitioned it would be nearly impossible to find an actress that fit the bill.
The thing is I know that feeling. And getting caught up in it. Getting scared when someone walks in the room. Eddie did a fantastic job portraying that feeling and I will always stand by loving this movie

Everyone quick to comment how brave and strong Einar is but what about Greta? No one really talks about the fact that Einar shattered his wife's heart and cheated on her. He broke vows and lied all because he thought he was a woman and what did it get him? (spoiler) it cost him his life. She was the one who had to deal with all that. Seriously people need to love themselves more and stop hurting others because of their own selfish desires.

As a MtF going through gender reassignment and identifying as female for along as I can remember. One thing has always stood out in my mind when I first dressed correctly. Eddies eyes speak volumes of the affirmation you feel at that sudden realisation moment. Eddie captures that perfectly. Made me cry.
This captures trans dysphoria so well. It's such a strange and upsetting feeling. I'm amazed by Eddie's acting as well and the sensitivity of the directing cinematography.

My favorite scene in the movie is the one where Einar/Lili was at the brothel emulating the striptease artist instead of getting the sexual pleasure. It was the best.

As what I observed throughout the movie, she want to be like her husband which she want to surpass her talent as him. Then it happens to be complicated when she want to be more perfectionist - which an unfinished painting on the legs that she wanted her husband to put the dress with stockings on. That lead to an unexpected transformation of her husband - which she knows it was her fault to cause this and accept it even he changed and love him while she can.
So in other words, Gerda caused her own heartbreak.
Just something as simple as that isn't the only reason. No one changes their sexuality solely through one thing. Lilli surpresseed the fact for years that she felt she was a woman. You shouldn't blame the wife, poor girl ended up broke after her wife's surgery and death, leaving her to die impoverished as well. She supported Lilli even though Lilli cheated on her with a man in the movie, supported her even when she was undeciding and afraid of herself. She's selfless. The most tragic type of selfless there is.
He didn't transformed , i don't know about real story but there is one thing for sure . He was a transgender different from sexuality and gender . He didn't transformed , lily was always there but putting that dress and on just made him realise his real self or i should say her real self .
