Welcome brave Adventurer!
In this UE5 Tutorial, We will learn how to create an Open world landscape with Snow using Unreal Engine 5 and Gaea using heightmap. We will create our landscape, texture it and bring it to Unreal Engine.
This landscape will be used in the next video to create and simulate vegetation and derive textures from it.
Using the same, you can create a open world of any size in Unreal be it 16x16 km, 32x32 km or 52x52km.

Great tutorials, I'm looking forward to the rest of this series. I subbed to the Patreon immediately after seeing how well these tutorials are made and how helpful the content is. Can't wait to see more in the future!
Thank you for your support!
Amazing tutorial, very well put together. Thank you Klaus!
Omg, your videos are just awesome and very high quality!!!
Oh this looks great, bookmarked for this weekend!
Wow! Such a great tutorial with amazingly good explanations! You definitely have a talent at teaching! And that editing is a cherry on top! Cheers from Ukraine.
Thank you klaus
your tutorial was so easy for me to follow and i got the results i wanted!
man you're so underrated. thankyou so much
Looking forward to what you bring
Sir, Can You please describe how to add water quickly and precisely in landscape after the full landscape has been created.
keep goin bro and ur channel wil be big
Using RAW files for height maps removes a lot of the annoying triangles. Awesome tutorial though! ♥
Love the intro Klaus!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So Amazing!
i have been waiting 2 weeks for this video, no cap

Awesome video with lots of information. Could you do a video with adding the water/multiple water bodies to a map that allows a player to swim in it.
Swimming mechanics aside, I have a playlist on the Unreal's Water system which might help.
Great video, i'm not even a game dev but this was still fascinating to watch
are there any existing open world games heavily featuring snow that you particularly enjoy?
I have to say Red dead redemption 2. I can hunt forever in the snow.
Other than that from what I can remember Star wars battlefront 2 (Hoth) and Horizon Zero Dawn The Frozen wilds.
in love!, 🤩
Thank you Klaus - awesome tutorial! A quick question: Part#2 seem to be missing? Thanks.
It's a patreon exclusive episode. You can find the link to it in the video description.
Nice ❤
honestly amazing videos. and has helped me a ton so far! but am still wondering if it is possible (somehow) to use gaea to make planets/the surface of a planet and then making them in UE5 with their own gravity/ atmosphere etc.
Possible but not necessarily Gaea specific. Gaea only gives you a heigtmap, All the other tricks to create the planet will have to be done separately..in Unreal or a mix of other apps.
@@CrowBiomes yea like using gaea height map(s) on like a sphere inside UE5 to get a ''planet'' and then adding gravity/ atmosphere etc. to it.
@@ZeroNyte That's right, You are on the right track
Do i need GAEA for this to work for me LOVE the made That's what I been looking for would work great in my survival game.
This video really helped me out! But do you have a video for the Runtime Virtual Texture? Like how to create one etc..
None at the moment that goes in detail.
@@CrowBiomes Alright, thanks anyway
Amazing tutorial. Thanks alot.
Do you know the Errant World plugin to fill the massive Worlds in no time? This Tool in combine with your tutorials is unbeatable. Please go on and make a massive Open world with Multi bioms like conan exiles map or something like that. This would be amazing
I haven't heard of that actually. Is it like Forest Pack?(Google the name). If so, Arboreal(Gaea node for vegetation) can do that nicely while keeping the landscape feature in mind
@@CrowBiomes thanks For that Information. No its like a procedural Tool where you can paint diffferen bioms ans dense Vegetation and more.
Its a really cool tool.
Hey, whenever I import FO_RIVER, and adjust the scale, my terrain is flat and not big. How can I fix this??
Thanks for sharing the content friend... I'm a bit lost with the Virtual Materials issue because I don't know what it's about or how it's done... I would also like you to please share the names of the materials or the textures that you use of bridge to do your master material... Thank you
It hardly matters what textures you use if you have a good material. I have a video on how to setup the material, "Remove/Hide Texture Repition"
Did you smooth whole landscape by hand? I wonder if there is a better solution for this spike problem?
hi I want to share my knowledge with you about UE measurement of landscape imported from GAEA: Resolution = 2017
Height = 2600
Scale = 5000
Real scale = 2.441m/px
Height-Scale Ratio: 00.52
UE Unit = 100
Top Height = 500m
A = (500/00.52) = 961.5384615384615
B = (2600/500) = 5.2
C = A * B = 5000
Ratio = 1 / 512 = 0.001953125
C * 100 * 0.001953125 = 976.5625
---------------------------------------------------------
Scale:
x = (100*Scale/Resolution) = (100*5000/2017) = 247.8929102627665
y = (100*Scale/Resolution) = (100*5000/2017) = 247.8929102627665
z = (100*C*Ratio) = (100 * C * 0.001953125) = 976.5625
Location:
z = 199997.1
I made the landscape material as it was shown in the video (with the greenish texture samples going into each layer), but now when I try to paint the cliffs, moss etc. it just paints them all with that same greenish color. No rivers, no lakes just that same green moss. Any help? I looked up here and someone had similar issue, but modifying the texture sampler to warp didn't help. Seems like that green color will override all else.
cant find the video where you go over your landscape material creation, could you post link please. would be lost without your videos
Whenever I put the lakes down the whole map gets covered in blue, Is there any fix to this? The whole tutorial is great though!
heyy please i've been stuck on 37:11 can't seem to figure out how you got the layer action to pop up so i can import the texture.
What version of Gaea is this made in?

Community, other than a few other things all the versions are the same except the final resolution you can build.
Hi, i jsut found your video, and it's fantastic and well explain, thank you for all of this
But i have a question, i'm still new on Unreal engine, and you said to import as a mesh the water (River, and lake), but i don't know how to do this, can you make a video about it or something ? (And sorry it might be sounds like a total new, which i am ahaha)
Thanks a lot
I have a playlist on Unreal's Water system which might help in the case. It's still experimental and has quite some limitations. As for the mesh import method, I'll make a video on it once the next build of Gaea releases.
@@CrowBiomes So i try to do with the water system, but i think the heightmap is too big for it, and i can't make lake or river
Anyway thank you for your advice, i'll wait for your next video then
Can you share maps created from arboreal nodes ?
Hello, I have followed the tutorial 100% and everything is correct.
The problem comes when I load the textures and create the map, it doesn't do it right, when I remove the fog there is still a lot of fog and the terrain looks black and blurry.
I have tried deleting everything and doing it again several times.
By erasing the material the terrain looks perfect.
could you help me?
Thank you very much and greetings.
I loved your tutorial.
love the ideas, hey do you know how to add more then one tree variant in a procedural box? when i put more then 2 only one tree type spawns but i want to add like 8 different trees spread out and mixed evenly but i can not figure it out . even when i press grow in shade and add multiple tree types only one tree type will spawn and doing the priority will not work for then 2 tree variants
It's probably the spawn setting for that tree species. Spawn settings are controlled individually for each species, Try removing all the other species keeping the one that's not spawning to see how many of it spawns without other species.
@@CrowBiomes they all have the same setting tho, idk what spawn setting to use so i just use one spawner per tree
@@chrishansomeanimations3147 every static mesh foliage in the procedural foliage spawner has different settings. I have a video on spawning foliage that you might wanna check out
@@CrowBiomes I WATCHED IT MULTIPLE TIMES AND I WATCHED A BUNCH OF OTHER VIDEOS FROME OTHER PEOPLE NO ONE HAS MORE THEN 2 FOLIAGE TYPS , ITS OKAY MAYBE ILL FIGURE IT OUT SOME OTHER TIME
HELP PLEASE
the folder with all the landscape and stuff not there for me
I followed each second of the video but when I import the landscape there is no materials. It is really frustrating since there are tens of tutorials and in all of them the materials as seen on Gaea magically appear in UE5
Whenever I export the map into unreal engine I cant see the map. I saw my map once but there was a giant line through the middle of it
dude when implementing a description please list a code of the assets you used
Is this one large map? or can it be use in world partition?
It can be used with World partition
Nice! Do you know how to make desert with mesa?
Indeed, Fractal terrace + Erosion was one way to create a mesa. You'll find quickstarts to help with that.
@@CrowBiomes What about biomes? If I want to create a mountain landscape and beside that a desert and beside that a lowland, is that possible? If so how?
@@zeon3d755 You'd have to custom mask different biomes, then a few layers to blend things together altho It'll require a good understanding of Gaea.
It was all going well, but then things that we didn't follow with tutorial started to appear and link provided for Patreon claims to be Part 2 of this tutorial, one would think it is continuation of this. The patreon page is also very complicated, some stuff ask for 10 usd subscription, some ask for 15 usd; and it is very difficult to find what is needed for this tutorial.
I got an error in unreal "imported layer is not grayscale. Results in the editor will not be consistent with the source file in the unreal engine" What can I do?
Hi can you show your 2nd part of video?
i have problems with materials
I have a question. I'm going to use this map in a game,
but I'm going to make several maps and use them like continents.
However, all maps created in this way have square borders.
I want to make these maps as natural as one continent on the sea,
is there a way?
(Sorry for my poor English, I used a translator.)
Yes, there are several ways.
You can either start with an island shape, you can do that in your terrain creation software (like Gaea)
Or
If you already have a map, then you can manually sculpt the edges to make an island shape.
@@CrowBiomes thanks! your reply become very helpful.
Any Idea why when I import my files it stacks all the squares/tiles on top of each other? like instead of actually building the map out it just stacks each square at 31:39 in 1 big pile like they are papers.
Are you importing multiple files...tiles? Are you scaling it right? Hard to say what's happening. What happens to the landscape after clicking import?
@@CrowBiomes Turns out apparently unreal engine 5 doesnt quite like my GAEA level but unreal engine 4 imported it completely fine. I read somewhere that unreal engine 5 doesnt work well with the textures and whatnot layered on top of everything. All good now tho, thanks for the great tutorials!
I am getting the same thing what did u do to fix it?
Hello, is part2 available? I've found part 1, 3,4 and 5 but can't see part 2. Thanks!

@@CrowBiomes Booooooooooooo. Just joking :D Thank you!
Actually i don't have megascan folder so how can i get it?
how the trees are imported right after the landscape @klaus
???
This tutorial is missing some parts so I got stuck.. Realruntimematerial making is missing, adding rest of the layer materials..
I am learning that I had NO IDEA how detailed GAEA could be! LOL
Question... I apparently have a river running though a lake and it comes out as bright blue whereas the lake is more subtle. Is this an issue and how do I fix? Cheers
It's probably when both water material renders overlap. (Water system uses a separate material to blend so you can mimic that if it's bothering you.)
@@CrowBiomes Well, as long as it looks ok in the finished product I don't really care LOL. Thanks for the quick reply.
Oh - and you've earned another subscriber! :D
The lake part didn't do the same thing for me, I added the mask and eddited where I wanted the rain to be pronounced and it populated other areas... HELP!
even tho it's a mask, the water will still follow the flows and settle in lower areas. The mask determines where the rain starts from. Try lowering the water level if the water is overflowing from a smaller lake
Hello I want to add ocean and islands how can I do
Great Work. Just wish to get that material files. Can u share this file ?
Hi there,
The project files are shared on Patreon.
Great tutorial, however when I import the textures, the entire world turns into the default texture. What could have caused this?
Something wrong with your material. Let the shaders compile and change the textures sampler source to shared: warp
@@CrowBiomes Thank you so much. That helped. Keep up the great work, looking forward to the next tutorial :)
Can you import layers @37:53 in UE4.26/4.27?
yes, In UE4 right click any layer and import file directly
Hey Klaus, i have a Problem, when i "import" the textures like you, 40:31 (moss, FlowTop, FlowBot, Lake, Snow) a error appears, "err0r X4510: maximum ps_5_0 sampler register index (16) exceeded" my lake texture wont load and i see only white and black blocks like a Chess board where my Lake is supposed to be. Pls help if you can, i am so close to finish this.
It's your material, It's basically saying you have too many textures. Also make sure to change your texture's sample source to warp

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti
and i have 16 GB Ram (9.9 GB usable)
The error always says:

Use -d3ddebug to enable the D3D debug device.

1. Update GPU Drivers
2. Change to Studio Driver
3. Undervolt GPU
