The answer might surprise you, it surprised Alex for sure. From the Acura MDX to the Jeep Wagoneer and ever minivan in between (including the all-new Grand Highlander), some 3-row SUVs that I thought would do well actually score well below average. My apologies, we'll have an updated video in the fall that will include the Atlas, EV9 when we have more detail, Aviator and Q7. Those were not available at the Chicago or NY Auto Shows for some reason (they chose not to attend), We somehow forgot about the Ascent. Oops. Check out those videos on the channel however!
The new Defender was missing as well I think.
The optional tiny 3rd row in the 4Runner is also missing.
Can we get all those figures in spreadsheet for comparison

WOW! Thanks!
Was excited to see how Atlas stacked up. Excellent review otherwise. This is very helpful to those looking at a 3row. Most of them are way tighter than people realize.
Does Wagoneer L and Regular length have same spacious 3rd row? Thanks for doing this helpful video!
@@AAutoBuyersGuidePlease note that Model X has different leg rooms for 6-seater vs 7-seater (113.1 vs 109.6). The one you listed in the video is for 7-seater.
Do yourselves a favor and give the atlas a chance I've had it for two and a half years and out of the three large SUV's I've had it's our favorite I have no idea why it didn't make this list
This is great consumer information, and one heck of a production effort. It’s appreciated. Well done.
Yeah this was a ton of work I’m sure, and greatly appreciated! Most of us don’t have the time or even available cars or dealerships to work through this ourselves. Even if we did it would take months to do. Thanks!
This is S tier content and the GOAT of 3rd row seating guides!
2 suggestions:
1) Include the vehicle length (this is very important if you have a small garage)
2) Land Rover has several models which fit the bill as well (such as the Discovery Sport)
Thanks for the video. You just saved me 25 trips to a dealer.
This is one of the most important videos by you, ever. Cheers to exquisite work.
Impressive review, Alex! Loved the attention to detail in your comparisons and the surprise result was intriguing.
Looking forward to more unbiased reviews like this.
Great job!
Alex is without a doubt the most comprehensive auto reviewer. Outstanding video. The only noticeable snub that didn’t make the list was the Subaru Ascent. Land Rover Discovery.
Ascent is just OK, not great not as good as telluride or better but a little more than CX-9. Seats 3 but I'd assumed only 3 kids or 2 adults.
Cargoe is just meh too.
I wanted it to be better than it is.
I was looking for the LR Discovery too, shame
How good is this! Great idea reviewing all of the 3rd row offerings back to back. Thank you!
This video looked so hard to make. Graphics, information, walking around the auto show, making sure you cover every car, etc. I’m so glad it paid off (the comments are overwhelmingly positive).
I have no children, and live by myself, yet I'm always interested in the third row of vehicles lol. I really enjoyed this video.
Hello there, my kindred spirit (although I do have three grandkids, they're 1400 miles away, and the oldest one is about to get a driver's license) 😲😲🤣🤣
You should be watch those Porsche 911 reviews, not a soccer mom SUV dude.
Heart wants what it wants
Mini Vans are the best! Its like a moving theatre and you can sleep at the back
@@stevenagood1159 They really are awesome. My parents always owned Minivans and I love them.
Thanks, Alex! Literally saved me like 3 days' time spent on research and testing some of them on a dealer lot.
How come VW Atlas is not in this mix? The 2024 redesign has an excellent 3rd row. Should be pretty close in space to the Toyota Grand Highlander.
VW Atlas is good and would be great with 300+ horsepower (or possibly turbo WR6). Too bad this isn’t at least an option for SEL. *Had 2018 SEL Premium 4motion for 3 years.
Just purchased the 2023 Wagoneer L not long ago. We have 5 teenagers and we sat in about every 3rd row option out there. We retired a 2017 Suburban that the kids outgrew, as the third row was slowly becoming too cramped for long distance road trips. Wagoneer L all the way. So much more comfortable, especially if driving 3 adults in the 3rd row. I do have to say, the moon roof is a must for an option. It adds more headroom and feels a lot better in the 3 row for visibility over a Wagoneer without it.
Only Alex on auto could think of a review like this, simply awesome. Thank you so much. Just love your channel.
Just did comparison shopping on three row midsize (I am 5'11" 190lbs, weightlifter) and many of these third rows are a joke, especially with three across in the third row. Unless you have very small children forget about putting adults in many of these third rows unless it is an emergency and maybe 10-15 minute drive.
Alex, you did an amazing job as always but I do wish you would have touched on the useable cargo space with 2 and 3 rows up because some of these vehicles really sacrifice cargo space with three rows.
We ended up with a 7 seater Atlas due to the sheer size of the three rows and available cargo space with all three rows up. We just did a 1K mile trip with 4 adults, an infant, and two teenagers and everyone was comfortable and we had room in the back for 6 carry ons and some other bags.
I went into this really wanting to get the new CX-90, a Pilot, or a Highlander, but none of them stacked up well against the Atlas in terms of space, comfort, cargo, and overall package and price. It's crazy how expensive these vehicles are! CX-90, and Pilots were all well into the $50K and all of the local Toyota dealers wanted a markup on the Highlander. Telluride and Pallisade were hard to find also with only $55-60K+ equipped models available on dealer lots (most of them had markup). Crazy. Not sure how people are buying these with 6-8% interest rates.
This is another reason your channel is so great. Answering the questions that most do not. You get what actually matters for buyers
Thanks for this Alex! So helpful that I have it saved as a video I revisit and send to folks who ask me about 3 row suvs
Great review. I would be nice if you could include a final summary list of all the dimensions. Could you do a similar list for towing capacity? Your reviews are outstanding. Thanks for all the time you put in these videos.
This is the best informational video about 3-row SUVs I’ve come across.
Thank you!
Great video, I hate to make a suggestion since I know how much work this was, though possibly a better way would be to sit in the second row seat, adjust to a standard amount of legroom and seat incline (that you use across all vehicles), then slide into the seat behind that... Since I feel the third row leg room might be quite variable depending on how the second seat is positioned and whether they allow you to put the second seat in an uncomfortable configuration.
Common 3rd row resident here; stretch out room for arms and legs is pivotal. That space in between the second row captain chairs is super nice to have. Also, bring a pillow so you can lean sideways.
As a fellow 3rd row climber at the Chicago auto show (been doing it since having kids): kudos to you. This was a full a exhaustive list of all quirks and details and your graphics were spot on to convey all relevant info.
And personally I've come to similar conclusions.
Great stuff!
Which 3rd row vehicle are your favorites?
Love these types of videos all in one place. Thanks for the time putting together and sharing.
Superb video, really helpful, I wish this video existed about a year back when I was searching for a 3 row 8 passenger vehicle. I ended up getting the Grand Wagoneer 8 passenger, as I determined had the most comfortable 3rd row, this video validated my judgment 😊.
Best comparison review for this type of vehicle. No other car reviewer has done this. Please update this comparison from time to time. Excellent work Alex !
Even without the vehicles I'm guessing you're hoping to see at the Detroit or LA auto show, you've really outdone yourself! This is, bar none, the single most informative video for 3-row shoppers! THANK YOU!
I was just thinking this on my way to work today and when i get home, this exact thing pops up on my feed. Wild.
This was the MOST well researched video with some stellar visual graphics/information to boot! Very well done
Some of these third rows are so tight it looks like Alex brought back his exclusive "Trunk Comfort Index". Love the video - great job as always, Alex!
Thank you so much for this video. Been looking around at all the 3rd row cars. This video was super informative and you compiled it all to one place.
Oh boy ! The stupendous Alex comes exactly with the stuff we love him for : load of infos and comparisons (except for the Atlas and the Ascent, I agree with Gus Morales and A C, thumbs up guys)... Like so many others, I have to vote for the minivan advantages : more than 32 mgp (exactly 2 years since I own a AWD Sienna, in Quebec City winter conditions, studded Nokian tires 5 months a year)... But for those who can't stand a minivan, outstanding job , Alex !
if you don't want a minivan but want similar space, the grand highlander really is the deal. heck it even has more passenger volume in all three rows than the full-size sequoia (new one, not 2nd generation)
@@huanronghu4432dealer markups and turbo keep me away from it though. The next best thing to me is the Pilot.
This is such a great video for families, best video
I've seen about 3rd rows. Thanks
Fun and very informative! Thanks Alex for the professional reviews, and innovation!
as someone looking to get a 3 row, this was SUPER informative!! thanks for making this
Thank you, Alex! This video is gold for a father of 3. Looking forward to more videos like that.
There is no one who reviews vehicles like Alex. This was a phenomenal summary. Bravo.
WOW! Awesome video! Exactly the information I needed, direct & to the point. Thank you!
Practically the only video needed on the internet on the subject matter. Thanks Alex.
Thank you for this compilation of third row!!!
I have a family of 6 and just purchased a 2023 Wagoneer L, that 3rd row space plus 44 cubic feet of cargo room are two of the many reasons we decided to go with this vehicle over the Suburban or Yukon XL...just a dream to drive and own!
As a father that’s in the market for a 3 row SUV or minivan, this was an amazing video. Thank you for thinking of the car seat set ups.
aside from my thoughts on a jeep grand Cherokee being the most popular in America, this video was brilliant! giving the consumer exactly what they need to know. Great idea and execution comparing all these 3rd rows in one video!
Very comprehensive content and just what my wife and I were looking for! Excellent job
Very impressed! A lot of work went into this video! Thanks for the information.
What a brilliant idea for the review! Well done and super helpful. Thank you!
You made our job simple. Thanks for putting this video. Its covers all cars woth 7 and 8 seater segments
Awesome video Alex! With 2x the amount of average children in the home, this really helped narrow down the options. Keep making great vids!
Disappointed in the sequoia
this was exactly missing on youtube. great efforts and thanks a ton!
This is one of the best videos of the car reviews that I have watched yet. Great job! One of the very best 3rd row SUV is VW Atlas which is surprisingly not mentioned in this video.
Amazing. Use of the 2nd row, 3rd row, and cargo area simultaneously would be the most useful analysis out there.
Such a comprehensive comparison, thank you.
For the odyessey (3:00), you can remove middle chair, and slide to the middle the chair with the child seat attached.
Love this video. Great comparison for people like me always wonder about the 3rd row comfort.
Bro this is exactly what I needed!!! Your the best!!! You explained everything perfectly!!!!
Review very helpful! Was looking for something like this.
Amazing analysis! This was exactly what I was looking for. Thanks Alex!
Thank you, this is the best video for rear seat realitys.
Unbelievably informative video. Thank you Alex!
Wow. This was comprehensive. Nicely done!
This video was extremely well done and very helpful as we consider our next vehicle. Thank you!
The best part is sharing how to get back to the third row with the child seats in the second row and sharing the space in the third row. Seat bottom cushion is very important, thanks for sharing its placement.
Best video I have ever seen till now for the 3rd row comparison 🎉🎉🎉 Great job Alex 👏
VERY impressed with this video. Thank-you.
The LATCH graphic is *FIRE*
Sacrificed going to bed timely tonight for this video! Totally worth it. See if you can add a summary at the end about roomiest and highest 3rd rice SUVs
Tbh, This video is most informative and professional review I have seen so far.
Superb video! Thank You for taking your time to make this very informative film.🎉
Excellent video video. Thank you for the great work and effort.
Awesome content. Given my empty nest the mission for the third row needs to be for adults. Given my EV aspirations, I opted for the most comfortable second row in the IONIQ 5. The spacious reclining seats are a plus as this is the slowest charging vehicle and shortest range I’ll accept. Looking forward to the third row possibilities of the EV9 right here. Thanks‼️ 23:26
EV costs more to produce and to power. It also produces more emissions to produce and power.
Why EV?
Alex, this is a fabulous review! Thank you!
Hey Alex, I love this comparison video. If you can attach an excel sheet in the description would even be more helpful. But this is already a very informative video. As a family guy, this will help us a lot when choosing the right 3 row vehicle.
Yes, if there is a spreadsheet with the dimensions all in one location would be awesome!!!
@@gstoner8432 Funny -I just sat down and did my own excel for this lol

@@ve2166Please share it with us!!! Google Drive, Microsoft Onedrive, however you want to do it. Thanks!
The most professional reviewer in the market. A must review source when buying a new car.
Just one clarification with the Carnival: you CAN access the 3rd row without tilting the 2nd row seat forward. The sliding door opening is wide enough for an adult to pass behind the second row when the seat is slid forward. That way, you can access the 3rd row with a car seat in place.
Also with the captains chairs you can pass in front with the seat all the way back!
Too bad we can't find Carnivals and there's a $10,000.00 minimum mark-up when you inevitably have to order one.
Seriously one of the best car review channels on youtube.
...THE...
yes, for dimensions and measurements I always look at Alex
This is one of the most useful comparison videos. Thank you =)
this is the video I was looking for. thank you
Thanks for taking one for the team and saving us a ton of time!
This the BEST automobile video on UA-cam so far, in term of 3rd row review 👍
I think this is the best video you've done, for my purposes! We're at the stage in life where we will shortly need a 5th full size seat for road trips (not around town, there we're fine with 4 full size seats), so the 3rd row utility is now an actual important metric instead of just how much cargo space there is with the 3rd row flipped down.
Looks like the Grand Highlander, upcoming TX, Yukon, Expedition, Wagoneer, Telluride, and Palisade make the short list.
According to Alex's latest Grand Highlander video, the GH is much bigger in the 3rd row legroom and trunk cargo space versus the Korean twins.
avoid body on frame vehicles
BOF isn't an issue for me.
All of the vehicles on the short list are at least satisfactory in terms of passenger and cargo space, so it's the more qualitative things that'll be deciding factors.
@@habu987 hopefully the TX will still have an option for an 8 seater and the passenger specs won't differ too much from the corporate cousin grand highlander since it is considered a "midsize" SUV on the outside with full size space in the inside. Meanwhile the LX is a full size SUV on the outside with midsize space in the inside. So I am guessing that u do not need a full Size XL SUV that has minivan space inside (Wagoneer L, Yukon XL, Suburban, Expedition Max)?
What’s the downside to body on frame?
Alex, you are the real MVP. Thank you!
Thank you for your effort. I hyper ventilated while watching you in some of vehicles ; those seats must stay as "mother in law seat" 😁
Would be nice if you included or linked to a table with your overall rankings. For those who are curious, he rated the Wagoneer L as the best 3rd row in America (excluding full size vans).
best comparison on youtube about 3 row SUV and their space. subbed
For the love of everything thank you. Thank you.
I worked in advertising for the auto industry. If you asked most Americans what they wanted it was a 3rd row, ability to fit a full sheet of plywood, plenty of space, awd and they would describe a minivan.
Phew! Amazing content as usual Alex! Maybe you can make a mini series of similar comparison videos!
Bravo! The best comparison ever.
Thank you for the detailed video!
Incredible video. Please do more like these. Could be done with comparing trucks or family sedans, etc....
We have triplets and went with the Pacifica just before they were born. We did not get the hybrid or AWD versions because you lose the middle jump seat for the 2nd row. This is a MUST! What can you do with this? Well, you can sit three across in both the 2nd and 3rd row IF you have the correct seats. For click in buckets almost any brand will work in both rows and for hybrid you can do it with the Diono series in BOTH rows (I can prove it with photos), and the Chicco Quick Zip. This has worked from premie age to +5 so far. Drop into the floor seats for both 2nd and 3rd (tho you do need to stash the 2nd row middle jump seat someplace - we use the largest Yakima box we could get and it works on it's side) means you can store a TON in here and have room on the floor to change diapers or provide a portable potty for younger roadside breaks. Everything about the Pacifica is perfect for hauling multiples - the only downside is the tragically horrible middle console - just an awful design or maybe it's better now ours is a 2018 model.
Note that the Outlander non-PHEV has a roomier 3rd row and if you pull the seat tab after it's up you can recline even further than the default, which adds extra headroom.
Great job, amazing effort, really helped me. keep up the good work.
Excellent video comparison. Would be nice to see the newer 3 rows like the Land Rover Discovery 130, Kia EV9, VW ID Buzz US Spec. ALSO, noting how the 2nd row folds to allow child seat in place is a great detail.
Would also like to see how the 2nd and 3rd rows fold. ALSO, note whether the 2nd row is a 60/40 split vs 40/20/40 split that allows 2 people to sit with a pass through in the middle to allow longer cargo item such as skis, poles, etc.
Great video, very helpful and was probably a lot of work to put together!
Hah. I live in Chicago, and was a touch confused thinking I was missing the autoshow. Nah. It was in February. Nice video! This is a great channel.
Great video.
It appears for most of these vehicles, the third row is so close to the back of the vehicle it must be pretty dangerous to be rear ended with people in the third row. There is virtually no crumple zone for the third row.
No Subaru Ascent?
I was disappointed as well.
Ugly and boring.
