- My dad and I have a long-standing argument about who’s the better guitarist: Slash or C.C. DeVille? The answer is obviously Slash, so I put together a compilation of some of their guitar solos from their respective bands, Guns N’ Roses and Poison in order to prove that I’m right. Enjoy, and be sure to let me know who you think is better! I might do more of these comparisons, so if you have any particular ones you want to see, let me know :)

I don't think you can compare them. Totally different styles and right for the bands they play in. CC is one of the most underrated guitar players out there.
The chemistry of both bands are amazing that I can say is true.But overall cc DeVille stands out above and beyond any of them I think he's that special of a guitar player.
Really you cannot compare any guitarists. They all have their unique way of playing. Which is what we grew up with, Listened too and brought us great songs. Eddie Van Halen, Angus Young, Chuck Berry, Randy Rhoads ♥ (died too young) and all the other guitarists. You all have a special place that gave us rock. Cheers to you all.. Rock will never DIE!!!

Well not really. GnR plays really similar stuff to Poison. I mean, sure, they happen to be more bluesy than Poison, but both bands have this L.A. glam sound. Plush Slash and CC have very similar guitar tones, if not the same guitar tone.
You can compare them, Slash was almost in the band Poison. Prior to becoming a member of GNR he auditioned for Poison, along with CC DeVille, making down to the last two. Well we all know who Poison chose as guitarist and the rest they say is history.
I love slash, but there is something very beautifully strange and mesmerizing about C.C that's why he will always be my number one
for Poison, it was Slash 🤣🤣🤣🤣 just kidding, both are exceptional on their styles
I don't know who is better but CC Deville is definitely one of the most underrated guitarists of the eighties.
His studio work is phenomenal. He gets pretty wild live but nobody can deny how great his playing is. The album Flesh and Blood is some of his best work.
I think CC talent didn't shine through as much for what ever reason wrong producer .Because that first album Evan though it sold great numbers .It was made on the down cheap .And the producer was well known for getting band with out alote of studio experience finish there albums on time and under budget so there was problem not a lot of time spent on his parts .Play it lay down move on and it still a bad ass recorded.
Truth be told, CC and Slash both auditioned for the Poison gig which obviously CC ended up winning. Doesn't mean he was necessarily better, but just a better fit for their style of music.....and he wasn't afraid to put the make up on which I think Slash struggled with. Regardless, it would be interesting to hear all the Poison songs with Slash on guitar and the Guns songs with CC

Agree but again CC butchered the solo on Swallow this live ...shame his playing was SO sloppy live

CC is the kid in all of us, he plays with fun and passion, all over the place and bright. His playing is amazing and a highlight of the 80s style of guitar. Slash is more the older us, more tame and slower but still can get the job done. Both are amazing in their own way.

I was listening to their music since my teens but I didn't think nothing of it.But I got deep into guitar music I think cc is up there with the greatest .

Both are super talented. I love both bands. I think I like CC's solos better. The distortion he used, along with his style, are the purest of all the bands... with the possible exception being Pink Floyd.

CCDeville is my all-time favorite guitar player, I get the most joy hearing him play, i understand there is a " better " guitarist out there, but for me, CC Deville is who makes me go " Fuck yea" every time.

Personally I disagree, as good as it is idk if it’s the greatest and in my opinion slash is just a monster when it comes to guitar and making it sound so perfect
I'll agree with that . he'll cc is no joke that guy is good. Everyone knows slash is amazing and he is when guitarist are on this level there's really no comparison just greatness on both sides.

Love his guitar playing. He made Poison and the 80’s guitar hero. Slash is great but I’d rather have CC in my band rather than Slash….and Steven Adler on the drums.

I like both of them. Have listened to both since they came out. I have seen both live. I now listen to Poison more than GNR. I would also rather see poison live than GNR.
Slash is a great guitar player but c c is a extra ordinary one
First one isn't "better" than the other, they're so completely different in their styles and abilities. CC can play anything. He's a heck of a player. But that being said, he also knows what the Poison fans want from him and he delivers exactly that.

Cc is truly highly underrated Guitarist .. slash was way too famous n one man show but surely can never forget Cc's emotional solos which had huge impact for Poison's tunes..
I agree CC is criminally underrated but Slash wasn't a one man show he played guitar behind the most famous singer of the 90's also he played with one of the best rhythm players ever Izzy people don't understand how important Izzy was to Guns he wrote a huge amount of their songs!!

not a fan of poison, but a fan of CC, I actually like CC better personally, a lot of people don't know Slash was almost Poison's guitarist. he had the gig but turned it down when they started talking about hair shoes and makeup he was not going to conform to the "feminine" look, which is great because now we have CC and Slash

That's no true, he wear make up when Guns N Roses were a Glam band. And Slash played in London (The same band that Nikki Sixx and Blackie Lawless played) another Glam Metal band.
@@TemplarShad0w Ya, but Slash said he didn't want to do it again. He said alittle glam was ok, like early GnR and London...BUT Poison was too over the top w/ makeup as in cover of Look What Cat Dragged In.
Slash did not turn it down, they choose Cc.

@@stephenmacdonald912 I've been playing since 83 and I agree with the original statement.. Slash is cool, sits back in that pocket and his stuff is all blues based. CC, he stands out way more, blues, rockabilly, some jazz and even classical influences in his style of playing. He has more tricks and techniques in his bag than Slash. However, for what slash does, he's obviously great, but I prefer CC's solo's over Slash's

Both fantastic guitar players... I actually had the opportunity to hang out with C.C. and Steve Lukather (Toto) and C.C. was surprisingly humble enough to say to me.... "Anything I can play, he can play with his toes!" C.C. is also one of the funniest bastids out there! There is a reason Sam Kinison loved hanging out with him! (I met Sam as well... God they were hilarious together!)

These are my 2 favorite guitarist. Can’t compare the two. They are BOTH AMAZING MUSICIANS PERIOD. Glad to have grown up with these two ROCKING AND ROLLING the soundtrack to my youth. DEFINITELY better than anything going these days. TAKE ME BACK TO YESTERDAY

I think what makes a lot of CC's solo's fun, energetic and interesting is he uses a lot of old school rockabilly stuff in his solo's. Something Slash doesn't give us, Slash to me is a chill guitarist that kind sits back in the pocket and is very blues based with his solos. CC in one solo can have rockabilly, blues, jazz and EVH type tapping/techniques. And it all comes together in a really cool melodic fun solo that works.
Example: Poor Boy Blues solo
i play guitar, but i dont really understand the science behind it. But to my ear, CC riffs and solo is more fun and emotional to me.

It’s a difficult thing to compare consider the vast difference stylistically. Personally I prefer Slash’s playing style, I think it’s more emotional & more memorable. His solo’s were David Gilmour/vocal like, but I’ll admit he worked out of the pentatonic scale quite a bit. C.C. was more exotic & is more technically proficient as his sweeping/tapping/string skipping etc, is superior to Slash, but he was also sloppy at times. His solo in “Life Goes On” is one of the great solos ever. I’d still take Slash if I was starting a band though...
Nothing at all wrong with the Pentatonic. Some of the greatest solos of all time were almost strictly pentatonic.
CC is much more naturally gifted
Slash is much more tasteful.
CC more erratic
Slash more connected.
I would take CC's chops and sprinkle them with Slash's composure.
But CC for the win!
I love both , I learned guitar playing both. I like Slash better but I still play cc, is easier to play than slash . Cc is cleaner each note can be 👂so it can be played. A solo like coma or paradise city are really hard to follow personal opinion. But love the musicality of cc in life goes on every rose has its thorn

November rains solos and life goes on solo are both in my top two but I personally like ccs solo better and I don’t see how it’s not considered the best

CC pulled double duty as BOTH rythmn and lead and is amazing in both positions. plus he can sweep pick, slash is not the greatest at that.
Guns n roses was better than poison, but poison s songs touch my feelings and that s because CC solos 👍🏻.

Ironically, it’s these two guitarists that got me into playing guitar. Not that I have anywhere near the talent that either of them have, but I’d say my style is more like Slash’s. Much love and respect for them both. Agree with comments here about Life Goes On solo being CC’s best, but he has a lot of great solos. Every Rose’s solo is just an absolute soulful solo and fits so perfectly with the song. And Estranged is among my favorite guitar work from Slash.

I've always loved both these guys. Slash is a very soulful player that tugs at your heartstrings, but I think CC has a sort of more dynamic, charisma when it comes to just plain fun songs. I think they each have their strengths we love them for. From a technical standpoint, my Dad (who plays several stringed instruments) tells me they're both sloppy :/
I would've compared "I Won't Forget You" to "November Rain".
I agree, they’re both amazing at what they do, but I do tend to lean more towards the guitarists who play their feelings into the guitar. And you’re right, November rain would’ve been a great comparison to I Won’t Forget You, but I couldn’t resist putting the Estranged solo in here somewhere. I like it too much! ;)

You guys know that Slash tried out for Poison, right? After Matt quit and moved back home. He got the gig but Rikki said fix your hair and change your look. Slash went back to Guns. This was '84 or '85. Read his book. I like CC. Both are pentatonic minor players.
Slash plays a lot of of other scales as well, and cece does when he gets into his fast pull off stuff. More straight minor scales not just pentatonic. Plus every rock guitarist bases their solos off the pentatonic, it’s only when they are flying that they don’t even use the scales but more of their workouts. Van Halen is notorious for not using scales. As long as you hit the base not you are going for you can pull it off.

I am fan of both and they are perfect for the bands they are in. The 80s had some talented musicians. Glad they still tour. Got to see C C live last month. His solo was amazing.

Slash’s solo are where harder to play, but cece is really crisp and clean. The difference between a blues based player vs a glam band guy. Both very good. Cece did this solo on their live cd back in the day was really good
I started playing in 1988, and these two are still among my favs. This is coming from a huge Yngwie fan.
Skill at CC Deville, Soul at Slash. But i think slash is more signature, thats why he become a legend.
C.c.Deville is the best, second place for Slash because Slash tried out to be in Poison , if I'm not mistaken.

Really tough man...CC DeVille was the child in all of us, and his solos were memorable. Slash, had swag, and the swag showed in his guitar playing..Let's put it this way..They were the best at putting their personalities through the strings of their instruments. They never tried to be anyone else but themselves..
I think they are both totally different but no doubt they are both great guitar players! I love them both and appreciate all the great music they've created through most of my life

Cc is underrated because of being in a glam band. I love poison but cc could've fronted any band he wanted. Hes an amazing guitarist and this comes from a Randy Rhoads fanatic...
CC had Floyd Rose n uses it a lot, Slash had Izzy Stradlin.

Fun Fact: Slash tried out to be in Poison. He destroyed all of the song no problem, but didn't get the part because he refused to where the clothes. He passed C.C. on his way out and said, "You're gonna be the one man."
I'm kinda biased, as I've met and hung out with CC numerous times when I was a kid.
He used to come over for.thanksgiving at my aunts house if you can believe that.
But, if you want to talk some of the best guitarists in the music business, you might want to turn on some country...

Hello all! Both played in my two favorite bands of all time. I would literally sit for hours with my BC Rich Warlock and try to imitate the wonderful chaos. CC is the classically trained king of the arpeggios as Slash is no doubt the king of the new rock blues riff. Many people may not know that CC is actually a natural lefty but left handed guitars were too expensive so he learned how to play natural. Have to mention Izzy Stradlin in this conversation. Definitely one of the most underrated guitarist of the day. He allowed Slash to stay on track while he played outside the box but gave GNR that Rolling Stones Keith Richards Ronnie Wood type sound. Have seen both bands live multiple times and have to say Slash is great especially as he got sober but if you want a show CC is the King. I would agree with all that comparing the two is difficult like apples and oranges. As I’ve gotten older I can say I enjoy Slash’s blues riffs to CC’s speed and harmonics. That being said two of the greatest from a decade of music where the guitar ruled the world.

CC is by far a better guitar player technically. He’s much more diverse in his skill set. Slash is a better blues player and definitely better at showing emotion in his playing.
I would agree with that! Personally, that’s why I lean more towards Slash. I tend to appreciate the emotion behind be playing more than the skill required to do it

Slash is a “lick” style player and C.C is a scales style player. Both are great and completely different styles of guitar masters!
