I love using oil on my coticules. My main one (might be la grise) cuts very well on oil, midrange to finish. Not surprised it works well on the curve too.
Excellent video Eric. I'll have to try that. I regret shaping my synthetic stones too. As you know, I went from a 1K all the way up to a 12K when all I needed is another Coticule or 2 and that's it.
I am glad I stopped after the first one. It’s a simple concept, but it’s hard for us who honed just flat on the normal progression to wrap our heads around it. You can really do all this with 2 lower end coticules.
@@BigEShaves can’t wait to try mine out! I’m gonna make a shave video tomorrow with my Boker Damascus and your soap! Let me know when you release the sandalwood please! I’d love to try it👊🏼😎🤙🏼
Watching you from the peanut gallery, and having a great time. Keep it real, and classy:) The La Grise and the La Gross Jaune coticule layer is nice to use for this. They cut really fast if you start with a flat bevel.
They do, and they are the most affordable, they have plenty of yellow left for curving An easy way to start with curved stone honing. Thanks for Watching.
Mineral oil (aka baby oil)?? Need to try to finnish on a flat coticule after the stick progression, that would be interesting. My problem is that my two daily use razor are so smooth that I really don't need to hone more.. 😢
Well, that gives me the urge to hone on oil again. I learned to sharpen on oil but moved away from it because in those days we didn't clean the stone (an "oil" stone). It got grimier over time. I have several types of "light" oils here. What were you using in that video?
I like oil on a coti, especially the really hard ones. That edge can rival many other stones claimed to be much higher grit. I do use a soap/water/glycerine mix that’s pretty close.
@@greggallant5058 I like a thin oil on a coti and a slate and a more viscous oil on an Ark. the oil in this video is Dollar General Baby oil. I am an oil nerd, if I see it I shake it up look at it. This one was very thin, which I like. It had almost no smell. So I added some Oud oil to it. I really like this one’s consistency, it’s just tight to use on both Coti and Ark. I will continue to test it. Right now my favored is 3-1 penetrating oil on a coti and marvel mystery oil on an Ark. This DG baby oil may kick both of those to the curb.
@ I have some very light oil that I bought for pivots in folding knives. But frankly, I think the Oud fragrance oil makes the difference. Just like the orange citrus fragrance in my hand soap. I’m going to try baby oil on my next coti hone.
What are the measurements supposed to be for a 4’ wheel on a 8” stone , I’ve got the “Jarrod plate” . I’m just trying to figure out how much more to take off the stone to get a 3-4’ wheel
@ , what should the height of the stone be at both ends and in the middle of the stone to get a 4.5 foot wheel . I think that’s what I’m needing to know / lol . Thanks for the help !
@ lightbulb 💡, I understand what your saying now , I apologize I’m new to the convex honing , I’ve been a flatstoner for 30+ years , flatstoner is that a word . Thank you a lot I really appreciate the help .
@@BigEShaves I wasn’t sure if you were using 3-in-1 on Coti. Are the specific oils that could damage the stone? I usually do soap or smith’s honing oil.
@ I use 3-1, penetrating oil, mineral oil, marvel mystery oil, I don’t think any can damage a stone, I clean with degreaser after each use. But Dawn works well too.
@ I’m still new to Coti’s so this is very helpful. Now I can try some other oils and see how well they do. Honing with oil on a Coti works surprisingly well sometimes for me compared to water.
Nice Video, Great advice. I shaped several grit progressions. It is not needed and sometimes makes things harder. More curvy / more coarse ….-->…. Less curvy / finer grit
Amen brother, I was told to keep it simple, and I didn’t. It hard to breaking old mindset of a multi step synthetic progression. Once the light bulb clicked. I realized I worked a lot for nothing. It’s an incredibly easy concept.
Very amazing to watching you Eric over your shoulder! It gives me many informations what I can use for me! Have a great weekend!
Thank you! You too!
Well, let me tell you! My opinion is very important and everyone needs to listen to it!

Fantastic honing and method.

Thanks man, Coticules are a special stone, it started with the Roman Empire. I sure do love them.
@@BigEShaves absolutely they are a special stone indeed thanks for the vid

I do enjoy it. La Grise is a good underrated coticule, performs well with oil or soapy water finish. Thanks for watching and commenting. Happy honing
Great video Eric, this makes me want to experiment with oil on my coticules.
You should! It’s really nice
Excellent video Eric! I’ll be giving the curved coticules a go this weekend.
Can’t wait to see how you like it

I thought my honing experience and opinion mattered to you!?!?!? Now my day is ruined. Excellent video. But I’m sad now. 😂
It does matter, to you 🤣😜😉
Love the hand signals

Hi Eric. Nice. What type of oil do you like to use for honing? Have a good one
That is baby oil, but it’s real thin. Something I just picked up to experiment with

On an 8’ stone (205 mm), 8 mm is right at a 4.5’ wheel
