Scotty how do you feel about a Hyundai Sonata 05 with over 150,000 miles
Your stupid if you call people stupid. Unsubbed.
Love your videos keep it up 👍
No gasket
Why u always saying stupid .. I think that sound so ignorant
Moral of the story: Drink beer AFTER you change your oil.....😁
Or not at all.

Did this 40 years ago, didn't lose an engine, but the amount of time lost cleaning the driveway taught me a valuable lesson!
Same thing happened to me. Once is all it took
Ditto.
sucks to have to clean all that up, but still far better than ruining your engine!
Hey man, have any tips on cleaning a driveway with oil ?? Asking for a friend

Scotty, don't forget to mention putting a light layer of oil on the new filter to prevent the gasket from sticking in the first place!
My Dad taught me to do that when i was like 7. But it wasn't until a few years ago that i learned why we do it.
@@skeeterfan3626 Right? It's funny that such a small detail can make such a big difference
usually enough dribbles out to coat the surface when you are taking the old one off.
@@McSlackmaster yeah but most rubber gaskets absorb some oil so its good to do it anyways
@@McSlackmaster well yeah but it’s better to have clean oil on the gasket, not dirty
When you take the old filter off, make sure the gasket came with it. This has happened to me before and sprayed about 2 quarts onto my driveway lol.
LOL

Coz U 'shirley' weren't laffin my friend ! 😲

I actually blew oil everywhere because I overtightenes the filter...

how do you not look at the oil filter before you put it on??
@@Smittyschannel I tightened it too hard with the tool.... so when I turned it on... it blew out everywhere
That's what Scotty just said.
When I change the oil, i always take a rag and wipe the gasket surface off, sure fire way to make sure nothing there but smooth metal.
Yup , Me too .
That’s the way I was taught.
Yes, this is the correct way
tell me you had a father without telling me you had a father^^^
@@budlight2969 I just taught my 12 year old son this very thing a few days ago
This video made me dig in the trash and look for my oil filter I changed today lmao. Great advice haven’t heard of that before .
I always wipe the oil off the flange before installing the new filter, keeps things clean and lets me check to see if the old gasket is stuck to it.
I do the same to make sure bits of the old gasket doesnt interfere with the seal of the new gasket on the mating surface. Gaskets keep getting thinner.
Me three
Best policy I have done Cat Filters with 3 o rings on heavy equipment, you have to check them very carefully.
I do this, not so much for the gasket, but to clean all the crud off of the engine around the filter, plus the drips and leaks I don't like baked engine oil smoking at me. It also keeps anything that might compromise the gasket _gone_.
Same here 👍
Easy thing to overlook, luckily I have caught that missing gasket on the filter before!
Do all oil filters need that gasket? I've done a few oil changes and have never seen the gasket. I've never even seen one come in the box of new filters
@@giggityeffyou no. If it doesn’t come with one. Caulk around where the filter Meets the engine. Duct tape works too. 👍
@@giggityeffyou no mane, don't listen to all of em, they just tell you nonsense and make you pay extra things you don't need! What you really need really is to make sure it got a good contact metal to metal and just tighten until you hear metal screeching.
A good way to make sure you never double gasket is to wipe off the area the filter came off of. Cleans the muck from any old oil off and you'll catch the gasket if it stuck to it.
Never even thought those gasket can come off.. I always that they where permanently secure from the manufacturer.
That would make to much sence. I mean what if some customers want the option to run without a gasket...... they are just looking out for us........😎
Changed the oil in my wife's car earlier this year and this literally happened to me. It's a good thing I always turn on the car after every job and have a look around to make sure all is well, that's when I noticed the oil spilling underneath. Turned it off immediately and no damage was done. Had I not checked and she went work with it the following day, she could have blown the engine.
"Marge get the kitty litter".😝
cant lie made this mistake once and had to clean the whole engine bay
Any consolation, I am too. Lol
him: “it’s called Double Gasketing”
me: OOOOOH IVE ALWAYS WONDERED WHAT ITS CALLED!
Recently changed oil myself, and it is slowly leaking now. I now see that this was the exact issue. Thank you Scotty
Thank you for the tip..... But stop yelling at me 😭😭😭😭
No keep yelling that’s how things get in your mind
We need to get scolded so we won’t look like idiots on the side of the road
Want the message to be clear so you don’t blow your engine up too
IrishFist, you look delicious 😋
You got scolded because you did against the double gasketting rules.
I literally and purposely do everything Scotty says NOT to do im his videos and yet everything is just peachy 💪
I always wipe down the filter mount where the gasket will seal with a clean rag. This will ensure the old gasket is not there and also remove any dirt or debris on the mount.
just bought an es350 cuz of you ya crazy diamond.
So did I. Love It!
I did that to my girlfriend's Toyota Sequoia it was getting late dark I couldn't see. I'm lucky the computer turned her engine off before did any damage
I like top mounted cartridge oil filters. No mess, easy to install and it just goes on snug.
Agreed.
I agree. Too bad most cars aren’t made with those.
I've heard of this and I always check every time I do an oil change because everybody has heard this story but 25 years and hundreds of oil changes I've never seen a gasket stick! But definitely good practice to always check.
Very important tip if you change your own oil. 👍
If I was going to choose a job where my engine blew up, working for Scotty would be it
7.5 thousand likes....and not even one thumbs down. This is big. This means alot. Scotty you are the main man! From North Carolina, thank you for all you do to bring us great instruction! Stay cool in Tennessee buddy!
I always rub the new oil filter on the old filter to lube the gasket . Doing this you never miss the old gasket still on engine .
just did the double gasketing for the first time last week. Daughter drove 3 miles and lost 5 quarts along the way.
Damn. Were you able to save the car?
Wow my car only takes a little under 4 quarts haha.
I had part of gasket stick on a 3''8 ford blew 5 quarts of oil all over the floor
Excellent advice. I’ve heard of that happening to people that I know. Thank goodness they stopped their car right when the low oil light came on and they didn’t ruin their engine.
They call them dummy lights for a reason because by the time it comes on the damage has already been done
Most of those dummy lights are set to 3 or 5 PSI so by the time it comes on your engine has already been destroyed or damaged
In all seriousness, this needed to be said! Sounds simple enough, but love that this is being seen by so many people. Just a disaster and a waste of time. Takes longer to clean the oil off the lower engine covers than to check with the flashlight 👍🏻
Gotta ask why is this beloved guy still working on the driveway and not some comfy garage?
Because he wants to
His new house and garage are not set up for him to work inside yet.
keep the vids coming Scotty. I rather watch you than TV these days. I never miss a Scotty Kilmer episode!
just bought an '05 Corolla with 32,000 original miles on it becuz of you Scotty . The woman I bought it from drove it 6 miles a day .
Thank You Scotty .
I learned the hard way. Happened to me in my garage. I started the truck & oil flew everywhere!! What a hell of a cleaning.
And when you purchase the filter, open the box and make sure there is a gasket on it. I got home once and found out the filter did not have a gasket.
You can use the old one. Using it 2-3 times won't hurt, but definitely not more than that.
Never got one without a gasket yet but got one years ago that the dome end was completely crushed, now I always check for damage before purchase!
I also check to make sure the correct filter is in the box! Got home with a filter once and someone had swapped a cheapie into the box - no doubt a byproduct of them swapping an expensive filter into a cheapie box which they then purchased.
@@92Pony i've seen that happen. Some of the fancy ones are now coming plastic wrapped for that reason.
@@92PonyI got one with a used filter, some Ahole cleaned it up in what smelled like parts washer fluid, people will do anything to save a buck.

@@fishrocker95 it's how I was taught back in the '60s.
old habits..
This is the absolute correct way to change the oil. Everyone should take notes.
Literally does nothing. No idea why people lose their religion over prefilled oil filters.
Good advice. Did this on boat engine. It blew and the whole engine compartment was drenched. Hell of a job to clean. Well done Scotty. Now do a video on the use of wet timing engine. My dry belt did 110,000 melts. Its such a crap design. Hammer them Scotty.
Very helpful vid to many. Ive talked to people who do their own oil changes that didnt even realize theres a gasket on the filter
This is too sad. I always inspect the type of rubber and clean the goop or dirt off the mounting flange with a cloth or paper towel. But then I'm probably going to be single the rest of my life.
My german car would show on the display: "your engine oil filter is double gasketed, please have the vehicle checked by technician".
Yeah my dad taught me that when I was just pup about 11 years old
Happened to me once too, so i always make sure the old one is on old filter and still double check nothings on the car. Clean, wipe surface before putting new filter on. You'll see everythings good or not. Thanks Scotty!
I thought Scotty was going to also tell you to use a dab of oil and run it on the top of the rubber ring so it will not only keep a good seal, but it will also help the seal from possibly sticking to the bottom of the engine.
Scotty is so good!
Blew an almost new engine this way. Did the 1k oil change after the break in and destroyed the engine. $12k later I had a rebuilt engine.
You can't blow the engine this way.
A squid car blew up after a double gasket was found during the break down to see what went wrong SMH
I saw someone do this the first time they changed oil. No major issue just blew oil out the bottom after he started ut but he quickly cut it off. Just did it again and made sure to take the gasket off this time. Was a good lesson for me to learn
Make sure there is a gasket on the new filter too ! Especially when buying or using cheapo filters, seen missing gaskets on new filters too
Bruh this literally happened to me at the shop yesterday when I changed my cars oil, then the next day I see this Video. I think Scotty is watching me.
Oil change tips for people who care about their engines:
1. Don't double-gasket
2. Pre-fill the filter as much as possible (sometimes not possible)
3. Buy a quality filter (Wix, Motorcraft, Napa Gold, etc)
4. Light layer of oil on the new gasket
5. Use good oil (Valvoline, Motorcraft, Napa, etc)
6. Use Full Synthetic or Synthetic Blend. There is no reason to ever use conventional oil.
Why prefill the filter I never do that
I've always dipped my index finger in the new oil and spread a little film of oil on the gasket of the new filter (on the surface that meets the engine), and I've never had the problem of the gasket sticking to the engine.
It happened to me once.
Lol just did an oil change on my car today and this video was just recommended to me. I legit checked the old oil filter to make sure the gasket did come off which luckily, it did. Thank you Scotty for the advice
Dear Scott we look very carefully.. but you are my favorite personality
Evening Scotty! What are your thoughts on the 2022 corolla cross? Brand new SUV from Toyota.
Hey Scotty, I had this happen once. I knew better but wasn't focused and forgot. Oil everywhere... The clean-up is a good motivator to be more careful next time!!
Thank you! I'm just learning how to change my own oil and had no idea this could happen!
First time I ever did an oil change in auto class in high school, it was double gasketed. Teacher wasn't super impressed but I've never done it again , so he did his job. Good Job Mr Taylor
THIS PSA would've been much MORE handy if I'd seen it YEARS AGO !!! Scotty, what took you so long!!?
With Scotty you never know.....I think it took him 30 years to edit the video....LOl.
Totally needed to hear this. About to do this and didn’t think about making sure the old rings come off. I’m worried about the torquing part
Did this once when helping a cousin repair a civic. Never thought about it until all the oil started shooting out at pressure while idling.
Was a good lesson for the future without losing the engine.
Yep I did that to myself one time fortunately I've been in the habit of starting the car up and looking for leaks and boy did I have a leak that day thank goodness I caught it.
When Scotty talks.....People listen......
it will save their cars.....he is the Best!
Yup! Did this when I changed the filter on my parents riding mower. As soon as I started it I noticed oil leaking on the ground. I immediately turned it off. I pulled the filter and sure enough the old gasket was stuck to the engine. Took it off, reinstalled the filter, toped of the oil and everything worked just fine.
Happed to me this morning 😂 it was my first time doing an oil change on my car, definitely I learned my lesson
In doing countless oil changes for years on my own vehicles, THE one and ONLY time I failed to wipe down the filter mounting surface on the engine, is when the old gasket was stuck on and resulted in double gasketing. The car sat in the driveway until the next morning. Heading out in the morning I glanced back in the rear view mirror and noticed a dark line or stream trailing from the car. Stopping to investigate and peering under the car I notice oil pouring out around the new filter. Lesson learned - there are no short cuts in doing a proper job. Take your time and do it right.
I had that happen once, and fortunately I always check the old filters to make sure the gasket is in place. No harm, no foul.
I did this ONCE years ago and now I check the old filter every time. There's nothing more fun than multiple quarts of oil spraying all over your driveway.
In my 20 plus years of being a mechanic i've caught 2 gaskets sticking to the engine, i saw both instances and averted the big leak. it doesn't happen often but just make sure your old gasket comes off with the old filter.
Luckily I noticed the bottom of the oil filter broke off on my wifes 2015 Equinox! Some filters do not fit right and they break! This is a cartridge filter too! Im SO glad I didnt start it up and looked at it beforehand!
Personally never seen this happen before on any of my vehicles. But, I also make sure to lube the oil seal on filter with oil before installing.
Also using a quality filter also probably makes this less likely to happen
Thank you Teacher!!! Your the Man!!! Thank you for everything you show US!! Showing u some love, all the way from Pennsylvania!!
Never even thought about checking for that, thank you for the heads up 👍 I'll be sure to check next time I change my oil, I'm even going to send this link to my dad because I doubt he ever considered this as well.
Scotty. I did that to my 2002 Honda Accord about 17 years ago. I was leaving on a big trip. Luckily my sister saw the oil dripping under the car before we left so no damage done. But what a lesson learned.
Did that only once in my life... I was 17 and changing the oil for my dad... I started his car and boom 💥 oil all over the garage floor... never made that mistake again! Life lesson that 21 years later is still with me today
Well if one gasket is good, two must be better, right?
did that when i was like 16 years old , my first oil change i ever did , lesson learned the hard way
I just had my similar moment, the filter is in a really awkward spot on my ford f150 2011 so I didn’t realize the new gasket actually fell off, I tightened it by hand and should have noticed the missing “squeeze” of the gasket but didn’t started my engine for 4 second and 5 quarts of oil was on my driveway… sucks but learned my lesson… will ALWAYS check the gasket lol
Only had to do this once and will never do it again! Great advice here Scotty 👍
I always take my finger and make sure there isn’t one left behind.
I know the 3.5 v6 has a canister type filter, so seems like a weird example.
I see this about 5% of the time I'm doing an oil change service, likely due to the installer cleaning off the mounting surface but *not* applying oil to the new gasket.
Done thousands of oil changes and not once have I had one of my filters leave the gasket behind upon removal.
Also helps if you don't overtighten the ever loving crap out of the new filter. Some of them I could swear were installed by a competition bodybuilder.
Scott is a true mechanic a genius if you will
This is correct...also dont buy stp or cheap filters that have foam gaskets but quality ones that have fixed rubber o-rings, k&n bosch mobil
I never thought of this my years changing my own oil, thank you Mr Dennis Hopper 🤘🏾😎
Yep I learned the hard way starting out. I did it on a New Holand L190 skid steer. I fired it up an oil went every freaking where. 😂
In the almost 40 yrs I've been changing my own oil, the gasket has never gotten stuck. I guess I will be sure to look more carefully from now on...lol
I did it once many years ago when I was a teenager. Oil went everywhere. It only took that one time to teach me to double check my work.
I always put a skim of oil on the Filter. It helps it seal and keeps the gasket from sticking. All you have to do is make sure the old filter has the gasket on it. If you can get your hand on the old filter you should be able to twist it off. Read the directions on the Filter Box. Never ever tightened the new filter to tight. If you can't twist it off with your hand the filter was put on to tight. That is again if you can get your hand on the filter. If you have to use a filter wrench it is easy to over tighten the filter.
Had that happened when I changed the oil on my back then brandnew 2004 Hyundai Elantra for its 1st oil change. The original oil filter was on very tight and gave me a little fight to take off. I did not notice that the gasket did not come off, and put on the new oil filter. Funny thing is I did some local driving on the weekend and the oil did not leak. On Monday, when I took it to work on the highway I noticed the oil light come on and smoke billowing from the back of the car. Luckily, I was able to pull into a gas station right away. I put more oil in the engine, and the oil just came right back to the ground. The gas attendant commented he seen that happen with double gasketing, and thats when I realized what happened. I had a pipe wrench in my trunk which I used to correct the issue on the spot. That car is still running today with 140k miles on its third owner.
Just about to do an oil change this morning thank you so much for this video I just stumbled upon it thank you Scotty God bless you
I worked at jiffy lube for a minute. What you're supposed to do is lubricate the gasket on the new filter with oil so it's 1.) Easier to get off the next time and 2.) Doesn't stick to the mounting plate. Jiffy lube may suck but I learned alot at that job
Dude you are full of useful facts. Love the videos. Keep it up 👍
I buy all the oil filters for my vehicles from the Toyota Dealership and the Honda Dealership Parts Counters. The Toyota and Honda Filters have the rubber gasket embedded and they never get detached. But, I ways wipe the oil filter contact surface, on the engine, to make sure the filter mount surface is clean.
Thank you scotty for helping a green gill like myself learn stuff like this
This happened to me at work multiple times. I learned my lesson I always triple check for stuck gaskets
I worked as a lube tech at a dealership many moons ago, I was rushing and didn't check, ended up doing it, and spent way too much time cleaning up the mess.
Lesson learned.
Scotty just look at the filter you took off. If there’s no gasket check if it’s still on/in the filter housing 💀
Yep scotty, that happened to me once. Luckily I realised why the filter was leaking before I started the engine.
Morale of story, let Scotty have the beers, while we do the dirty work! Thanks Scotty!
😲😬 I have done the tune up to two of my pass cars, I didn't know that..
Thank you Scotty
As long as you lubricate the new filter gasket with some oil you should/will never have this problem.
