I will not go down under the ground
’Cause somebody tells me that death’s coming around

Written in March 1962 (and first sung on March 19th) this precedes "Blowing in the Wind" by a month and is therefore Dylan's first masterpiece. I might even suggest that it's a better, or more substantial, song than "Blolwing.." The Muses had begun to take the young man in hand!

Maybe because the world wasn't ready for it yet, or because people are not gifted with 20:20 hindsight - or maybe that's the same thing. Or maybe because Dylan likes to cover his tracks, and Blowin in the Wind and Hard Rain are further developments on this theme. But I agree - it is one of his very best.

This is in my top 10 Dylan songs ever (not that it's possible to draw a line at 10). Fascinating to see the evolution of Dylan. The seeds of Blowin' in the Wind are in this song and in No More Auction Block. I was listening to Planet Waves tonight - hadn't listened to it for decades, and not a favourite at all - but now I can see it was a necessary precursor to the awesome Blood On The Tracks which is a further development of that musical style.

I was in 3rd grade when the existential threat of horrific nuclear annihilation was driven home almost daily in school with the duck and cover drills and evacuation to the fallout shelters. Despite it not happening, the "fallout" has poisoned me for life. We could have been spared all that horrible torture because as the bigger kids liked to say... Of all of Bob Dylan's songs, this was the most reminiscent of a Woody Guthrie song. In fact, if I didn't know better, I would have guessed this was a Woody Guthrie song. This may be the reason Dylan left this song off of the 'Freewheelin' album. At the time, he was slowly moving away from the Guthrie link.

Definitely one of Bob Dylan's best early songs. Resonates about the threat of nuclear warfare circa 1962 and the need to go 'underground' ie into a fall-out shelter; yet at the same time a metaphor for death in a wider sense (or the need to 'survive' and re-create to avoid death and destruction) which are common themes in Literature and poetry throughout history e.g. World War One poet's like Siegfried Sassoon juxtaposing warfare and death with images of nature and renewal. Better than A Hard Rain imo and should have been included
    on the Freewheelin' album.

    Deixe-me morrer em meus passos,
    Deixe-me morrer em meus passos,
Deixe-me morrer nessa vida antes que eu seja enterrado.
    Deixe-me morrer em meus passos,
    Deixe-me morrer em meus passos,
    Deixe-me morrer em meus passos,
    Deixe-me morrer em meus passos,

He’s still around and gives interviews. Don’t see why you’re mentioning his name of you’re referring to the war In Ukraine which the CIA and Victoria Nuland helped orchestrate with the Maidan Coup back in 2014. Don’t tell me though, you think that all of this is Mr Putins fault despite well respected academics like Noam Chomsky warning that this would happen thanks to the US and their NATO allies breaking their agreement with Mikhail Gorbachev regarding NATO expansion along with Zelenksy claiming that he would sign the Minsk Agreement once he comes into office. I’m sorry, but the situation in Ukraine doesn’t all fall at the hands of Mr Putin I’m afraid despite what western governments and the corporate media like to report.

    Ohio state massacre of innocent.
Students. They have no interest .
    Wow, it's part us. .

What, you mean because of the war Victoria Nuland and the CIA helped orchestrate with the Maidan Coup back in 2014?…..

The US and their NATO allies are the biggest warmongers in the world, but you’re here because of Vladimir Putin. The hypocrisy and double standards from people like you is incredible. 🤦🏽‍♂️

I will not go down under the ground
"Cause somebody tells me that death's comin' 'round
An' I will not carry myself down to die
When I go to my grave my head will be high,
Let me die in my footsteps
Before I go down under the ground.
There's been rumors of war and wars that have been
The meaning of the life has been lost in the wind
And some people thinkin' that the end is close by
"Stead of learnin' to live they are learning to die.
Let me die in my footsteps
Before I go down under the ground.
    I don't know if I'm smart but I think I can see
When someone is pullin' the wool over me
And if this war comes and death's all around
Let me die on this land 'fore I die underground.
Let me die in my footsteps
Before I go down under the ground.
There's always been people that have to cause fear
They've been talking of the war now for many long years
I have read all their statements and I've not said a word
But now Lawd God, let my poor voice be heard.
Let me die in my footsteps
Before I go down under the ground.
If I had rubies and riches and crowns
I'd buy the whole world and change things around
I'd throw all the guns and the tanks in the sea
For they are mistakes of a past history.
Let me die in my footsteps
Before I go down under the ground.
Let me drink from the waters where the mountain streams flood
Let me smell of wildflowers flow free through my blood
Let me sleep in your meadows with the green grassy leaves
Let me walk down the highway with my brother in peace.
Let me die in my footsteps
Before I go down under the ground.
Go out in your country where the land meets the sun
See the craters and the canyons where the waterfalls run
    Nevada, New Mexico, Arizona, Idaho
Let every state in this union seep in your souls.
And you'll die in your footsteps
Before you go down under the ground.
