    Lyrics:
The festival was over, the boys were all plannin' for a fall
The cabaret was quiet except for the drillin' in the wall
The curfew had been lifted and the gamblin' wheel shut down
Anyone with any sense had already left town
He was standin' in the doorway lookin' like the Jack of Hearts
He moved across the mirrored room, "Set it up for everyone, " he said
Then everyone commenced to do what they were doin' before he turned their heads
Then he walked up to a stranger and he asked him with a grin
"Could you kindly tell me, friend, what time the show begins?"
Then he moved into the corner, face down like the Jack of Hearts
Backstage the girls were playin' five-card stud by the stairs
Lily had two queens, she was hopin' for a third to match her pair
Outside the streets were fillin' up, the window was open wide
A gentle breeze was blowin', you could feel it from inside
Lily called another bet and drew up the Jack of Hearts
Big Jim was no one's fool, he owned the town's only diamond mine
He made his usual entrance lookin' so dandy and so fine
With his bodyguards and silver cane and every hair in place
He took whatever he wanted to and he laid it all to waste
But his bodyguards and silver cane were no match for the Jack of Hearts
Rosemary combed her hair and took a carriage into town
She slipped in through the side door lookin' like a queen without a crown
She fluttered her false eyelashes and whispered in his ear
"Sorry, darlin', that I'm late, " but he didn't seem to hear
He was starin' into space over at the Jack of Hearts
"I know I've seen that face before, " Big Jim was thinkin' to himself
"Maybe down in Mexico or a picture up on somebody's shelf"
But then the crowd began to stamp their feet and the house lights did dim
And in the darkness of the room there was only Jim and him
Starin' at the butterfly who just drew the Jack of Hearts
Lily was a princess, she was fair-skinned and precious as a child
She did whatever she had to do, she had that certain flash every time she smiled
She'd come away from a broken home, had lots of strange affairs
With men in every walk of life which took her everywhere
But she'd never met anyone quite like the Jack of Hearts
The hangin' judge came in unnoticed and was being wined and dined
The drillin' in the wall kept up but no one seemed to pay it any mind
It was known all around that Lily had Jim's ring
And nothing would ever come between Lily and the king
No, nothin' ever would except maybe the Jack of Hearts
Rosemary started drinkin' hard and seein' her reflection in the knife
She was tired of the attention, tired of playin' the role of Big Jim's wife
She had done a lot of bad things, even once tried suicide
Was lookin' to do just one good deed before she died
She was gazin' to the future, riding on the Jack of Hearts
Lily took her dress off and buried it away
"Has your luck run out?" she laughed at him
"Well, I guess you must have known it would someday
Be careful not to touch the wall, there's a brand-new coat of paint
I'm glad to see you're still alive, you're lookin' like a saint"
Down the hallway footsteps were comin' for the Jack of Hearts
    ...

There's a story possibly apocryphal about Bod Dylan and Leonard Cohan and Dylan asking Cohan how long it had taken Cohan to write Hallelujah, Cohan said about 5 years all told and Cohan asking Dylan the same question about, God gave names to all the animals, (from Slow Train Coming,) and Dylan said it took me about five minutes.

Now factor that by 7 careers and u will understand. I hate to upset beatle fans but how many great albums/songs has Sir Paul made since 1970???? That’s almost 50 years. It ain’t that easy folks. I personally change the nearly the whole first half with the outtakes from More Blood, More Tracks for a more slow/ somber tone. However, I keep this song as it is. I feel that the juxtaposition in tempo and "fun-ness" gives a bit of variety.
I also replace "Meet Me in the Morning" with "Up To Me". Nonetheless, this album is arguably the greatest album from a lyrical standpoint (not musically) of all time. This and Abbey Road (arguably the greatest album from a musical standpoint) are my top 2 favorites, Blood on the Tracks always leaning to the top spot.

...well, Ms Cathy, for me, it's been 55 years, & 2 chapbooks, with maybe (only) 100-200 pieces i would show anyone; i first saw Bob in 64-65, in the Village (and over 50 times since, most recently, about 2 years ago, on Maui... ( now, i can say with No apologies & no pretensions, 'i write because of hearing him',... At first Trying to write 'Like him'....Wrong !.... but still, tryin is what led me to the conclusion that No One could (& so i set about finding my own way...and i was blest with some gigantic 'real writers' & their merciless feedback.)..i have seen Ginsberg, Yevteshenko, Maya Angelou, Spender, Vozsnesenski, Ferlinghetti and others, not One of them was better than this man (who once rhymed, "i've seen all these decoys/through eyes of deep turquoise..." ! )...he is Truly (quite obviously) "One of a kind", a master, and like all Masters, one who doesn't care about ANY of that....& with the Nobel, finally, that is Unquestionably established, as you say, This is the One Literary Giant of the 20th century, who not only has produced a body of writing, unfathomable in its' quantity, quality, range, diversity & down-right Universal.... For the Ages.... ALL live in is shadow, & No one writes without being informed by him & his work....and yes there is a fair handfull who, inspired by him, produce (no where near as much, as many, (Truly) GREAT pieces, from Lennon, Brian Wilson, Neil young, Kantner & Slick, Jackson Brown, Paul Simon, to Lightfoot, Cohen, Joni, & yes, Townes, Willie, Chrissie Hynde.... but They are/have been All PBD (Post-Bob Dylan), they exist, have prospered, done admirable work, but All because BD 'went ahead', off the edge of the map, finding, exploring, defining, & clearing the ground for every body else to build their work on.... (IMHO), 500 or even 1000 years from now, if humanity survives at all, they will be studying, delighting-in & and (Still) learning from the work of this 'simple song-&-dance man' for eons....he found a world, & in exploring it made it compellingly Realer, by living-in-it, leaving blaze marks on the trees as he passed, creating a level, a standard, still unmatched & most-of-all he showed Us to ourselves, for better or worse, taking the blame for it all .... he may well be why We haven't destroyed it (and Ourselves) yet....he "in a little hilltop village,/ they gambled for his clothes/ he bargained for salvation/ ". but they give'm a lethal dose...."
...and, nobody, anywhere was, or ever will-be "quite like the Jack of hearts".....
      peace, my friends......

Can we take a second to appreciate how good his backing band is? In songs like this one, or "Tangled up in Blue", the band is doing incredible job. The little riffs, percussion, it all adds up to the final song. Which is excellent, as always with Dylan.

@@bieuxyongson You have nice taste. My favorite right now is hard to tell. It would be struggle between the albums released after 2000s (like Tempest, RARW, or Love and Theft), and Another Side of Bob Dylan. Blonde on Blonde is fantastic too. Although, I must admit that Another Side is simply my favorite. Every song on that album is excellent, plus it has more than two killer songs.

I have seen Dylan singing 'My Back Pages' and his voice was awesome. It is in black & white so probably from early 60's. I don't know if I saw it on TV or on UA-cam, although I can't find it on UA-cam now. There are various versions of him singing this track but on the one I can't find his voice is awesome. His voice was smooth and pure, not gravelly as it became later. Neverless, Dylon is out there on his own.......unique.

@@texetera I had a friend who had a friend that worked for WEA around 1974-75. He gave a "Loss Leader" compilation of artists. Dylan did a cut o Lay Lady Lay, him and an acoustic guitar. Absolutely perfect. Sang from his diaphragm instead of through his nose. Not as much projection, a TINY bit lower, and absolutely crystal clear. They didn't usually do this on the Loss Leaders but he had a second track, equally as clear, but for the life of me I can't remember. I've long regretted leaving over 300 hunks of vinyl behind when I left Oahu in 1979. It also had a phenomenal cut of Bread doing Elton John's "Your Song".

I started listening to Bob Dylan & Joan Baez in early 60's. Went to a concert in Raleigh, NC (1963) that Baez was headlining. Didn't know that Dylan was going to be there. He blew my mind with his creativity. Blowing in the Wind, Mr Tambourine Man, Like a Rolling Stone, etc. That's why he won the Nobel Prize.

Blood on the Tracks is one of those albums you might not be able to listen to the same ever again if you try to use it for catharsis during a tough time. This song especially always hits a painful chord, even though it's not one of the more overtly sad songs on the album. There is a feeling of loss and time running out that's very well captured here.
Dylan said he wanted to write songs that weren't fixed in time. This might be the best example of it.
