This classic situation comedy-"The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis"-originally aired on CBS from September, 1959 to September, 1963! I watched all the episodes of this tv comedy program, it's so old that even the new young american teens don't know about this. I always laughed when his dad said "I gotta kill this boy" so hilarious.
I like that the dad in this show seems more realistic than the dads in most TV shows from that time - Father Knows Best, Leave it to Beaver, Ozzie and Harriet, etc.
This was probably the first television program I ever saw. What I remember about this show is the statue. I saw Bob Denver in person at New River Gorge Bridge Day in 1994 in West Virginia.

Watched this show in syndication years after it’s run and enjoyed it. Dobie reminded me of the old Archie comics. I’m disappointed that I didn’t hear much about Hickman’s passing in the media.
Maynard is more beatnik-y in the early episodes, using lots of beat words & making his voice sound jazzy. He wasn’t as stupid in the first few episodes - he connived with Dobie & gave him some good advice sometimes. As the show went on they dropped the beat words, just using the occasional “big daddy.” Beats were already getting outdated when the show started, so Maynard was turned into more of an innocent idiot than a beatnik who talked about jazz & wanted to be cool. But he still didn’t change his clothes. Beats were known for wearing dark clothes, whereas Maynard wore light colored clothes & shoes. Could’ve been the network censors insisting that the character not be too dark in character or clothes, or it just could be that white looked better onscreen & showed off the dirt & holes in Maynard’s outfit. Showrunners were portraying beatniks as dirty & sloppy stereotypes. The dirt disappeared as time went on & there were fewer holes in his clothes as the Maynard character became more dim & childish. Dobie calms down in later episodes. His manic obsessive stalking of Thalia in early episodes was tamped down & eventually the show featured Dobie & Maynard’s adventures more than Dobie chasing girls. There was just so much you could do with a girl-chaser character in 1959. Even double entendres were forbidden on teen shows back then. You’ll notice Dobie became less manic & less stupid as his hair darkens over time. By the end of the series Dobie disappears (Hickman started looking too old) & was replaced by his younger cousin “Dunky” while Maynard turns into a unicorn type fantasy character, eventually wearing footie pajamas & hugging a teddy bear as he waits for Santa in what looks like an oversized child’s bed in the Gillis household on Christmas Eve. Some of Maynard’s later episodes feature fantasy/dream sequences that were lifted straight from Dobie Gillis & plunked onto Gilligan’s Island a few years later. CBS, like all networks, retreaded their sitcom tropes over & over again (like chimpanzees - you couldn’t have a 60s sitcom without a chimpanzee in there somewhere).
One of the best shows from the '60's. I watched it when first aired as a teenager and liked it immensely. I still find it quite relevant exploring American mores....just wish the canned laughter was axed.

It featured the comedic talents of Dwayne Hickman, Bob Denver,Frank Faylen, Florida Friebus, Sheila James, Tuesday Weld, Warren Beatty, Tommy Farrell, Yvonne Lime, Darryl Hickman, William Schallert, Doris Packer, Steve Franken, Jean Byron, Richard Clair, Raymond Bailey, and Bobby Diamond. The show was based on characters created by author Max Shulman. I've enjoyed watching reruns of "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis" since 1980! :)
William Shallert was Mr TV! He was on countless shows. He was in 388 films! I don’t know what the record is but he had to be close to the top. We just lost him in 2016.
Beatniks, Maynard, Way Out Girl. 🙏💪🌍🌏🌎❤️🇺🇸🖖
I remember that music! I was just a little girl and had such a crush on Dobie. I wanted to look like Thalia.
r.i.p. dobie and thank you
This is one show that slipped by me in my 1990's youth of watching tons of old shows.
I would have really dug it
Damn I remember seeing this when it first ran. Feeling a little old.
I'm 1993 born tbh I'm loving these 60's sitcoms , although it's 2020 with same problem "to get a girl you need money" true Af
Ketan Awale Try being 2003 born😂
I found this after looking back at the influence for Scooby Doo characters and it’s aged surprisingly well.
@@morrigan7066 like around Sept 1969 might have been like ahhh the 13 th. Another one I seen first run. Maynard and Shaggy are like total depiction's of beatnik's.
Maynard G.Krebbs. In the words of Obi Wan Kenobi, "Now there's a name I've not heard in a long time, ...a LONG time!"
Tuesday Weld was so gorgeous! I always loved her soft spoken voice and her beautiful blonde hair!

Oh cool! I was wondering if they will put "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis" on DVD. I especially love the character Maynard G.Krebs portrayed by Bob Denver and it was the First Hipster/Slacker TV character.Around that era, The Beatniks were the thing and they were the counterculture before we even knew.
That was the role Bob Denver should have been famous for.
525Lines Maynard G.Krebs predated the Hipster culture by 40 Years.
Erin Walker w. work!,,,,,,
All seasons of the show are on dvd. Search Amazon.
@Meade Vlog channel Yes,then around,um,1965, came the hippies 🕊️🌼☮️,then in the late '70s to the '80s, came the punks, then in the early '90s came the slackers/grunge-types, and then around 1997, came the hipsters.
Frank Faylen and Florida Freibus were favorite TV parents. More realistic; like mine. 1959-60 were great years.
I remember watching this. Reruns. The dad is a trip.
My fav actor in the series.
I remember when I was young watching this show all the time and really enjoying it.
WHOA!! Did Bob Denver just call Dobie "good buddy"? Like the skipper used to call Gilligan? My head is spinning.
@Proud2be White yes
Little Buddy.
I'm British but I used to watch this when 12 years old as a £10. Pom in Oz. We all loved it but no-one in the UK knows of it!
shout Out From Florida 🌴I enjoyed British shows! On the Bus 🚌 was a fav! Also, Bread was Great! and Upstairs/downstairs...Carry On Series were so funny! I still prefer British shows and movies! We took the premise of “ All in Family” from You!! I’m sure their were others !!Take care and God Bless 🙏
@@suzeauster2223 Thank you. Thats too nice. x
malcolm nicholls ❤️
Never shown in the UK, and you can see why! It makes The Dukes of Hazzard look like As you Like It !!
RIP Dwayne Hickmen. Its strange that I checked up to see if he was still alive Jan 3 and was impressed only to find out he passed on Jan 10. Seems like we are losing all our stars.
I’M A HUGE FAN OF TMLDG
My mom used to watch the repeats on Nick at Night, so I watched a few back then. I found it interesting that it spawned Scooby Doo, with Dobie as the Fred character, Zelda as Velma, and Maynard as Shaggy.
You just blew my mind; forreal??
I mean it fits so perfectly, it must be
I watched all the episodes of this tv comedy program, it's so old that even the new young american teens don't know about this. I always laughed when his dad said "I gotta kill this boy" so hilarious.
watched this show many times. wholesome entertainment.
Use to love this shit as a kid when they played it on Nick at night lol none of my friends never knew what I was talking bout
Shit's the word. Been wanting to see it again for almost 60 years -- what a letdown, what utter superficial degrading trash.
@Meade Vlog channel But that's not saying anything, MV. Paper tastes better than poop, but it doesn't make it edible.
I like that the dad in this show seems more realistic than the dads in most TV shows from that time - Father Knows Best, Leave it to Beaver, Ozzie and Harriet, etc.
Thank you very much! You make the world a better place place. The more the better
I just realized how much I loved this show in junior high-- esp. Maynard!
This was probably the first television program I ever saw. What I remember about this show is the statue. I saw Bob Denver in person at New River Gorge Bridge Day in 1994 in West Virginia.
I use to watch this in the early 90s brings back so much nostalgia
Wow! I used to watch it in the early 60s.
I would love it if this show came out on dvds.
It is on DVD. You can purchase each season individually or as a set.
@@Muirmaiden Thank you for letting me know that. 😊
@@Muirmaiden At the cost of

I remember from 8 years old give or take a year, The late 50s/ early 60s , Pretty clean-cut programs back then
I saw these shows as a five year old. Didn't really understand much of it, but my parents and sister were laughing.
I was born in 1955 and haven't seen any of these TV episodes in sixty years. This reminds me how damn cute they were.
Dobie Gillis actually hits the spot.
*She will never get a girl for himself because he doesn't have money.*
Dang, I remember discovering this show on the final days of 2023.
I'm currently 14, and I actually like this show. *Like, a lot.*
Tuesday Weld was quite the gal!!!
She's exquisite.
Jack Pullen - Yes, and she later did films. She was a good actress, but didn’t take many roles.
@@alexthompson9516
Watch her as the older sister in the movie Looking For Mr Goodbar. She wasn't just a pretty face, when Ms Weld got decent parts she did a very good job with them.
She was stunning. And a decent actress
She's my grandmother's cousin 👀😯

MY FAVORITE ACTORS AND ACTRESS DWAYNE HICKMEN. AND MAYNARD G KERBS YVONNE CRAIG
One of my favorite series when Nick at Nite first appeared. THX 4 Posting!
that was actually how I found Gilligan's Island. I don't remember this one, though.
@@Analyn100 It was on Nick at Nite from the late 80s-early 90s when they used to show many TV series from the 50s and 60s like the Donna Reed Show and the Patty Duke Show. Shame no one shows those TV shows anymore.
Watched this show in syndication years after it’s run and enjoyed it. Dobie reminded me of the old Archie comics. I’m disappointed that I didn’t hear much about Hickman’s passing in the media.
RIP Dwayne.
Excellent analysis!
Thank you for this!
The chimpanzee thing carried into the 70s, except it switched more into the comedy-adventure genre. Anyone remembsper "B J & the Bear"?
Thank you
So this was when the use of the word ''like'' as it's used now, started!
Like, yeah man
@Jeffery Pullin hey you talking about her or me. you should have seen me in the 70`s
@Jeffery Pullin Uh oh, we got another Dobie Gillis in the house.
@Jeffery Pullin I always thought that was more of a young adult subculture than teenage.
This was the time of the 'beatnik' generation. "Like" was a beat speak.
A very good tv show. Tuesday Weld was very Beautiful, back in her day.
These were great TV shows. They made me laugh and looked forward to watching them weekly. How'd we get to the point that all they produce is crap?
One of the best shows from the '60's. I watched it when first aired as a teenager and liked it immensely. I still find it quite relevant exploring American mores....just wish the canned laughter was axed.
well, the canned laughter here is MILD compared to it now
Love how they timed the laugh track wrong. "My Father's 60 years old and has a kidney condition..." hahahaha
I remember watching this with my grandmother and my grandfather on the old Nick at night. Along with car 54 and the Donna Reed show.
RIP. Dobie
Dobie and Maynard are the models for Fred and Shaggy in Scooby Doo
There are two surefire ways to solve the money problem in this case. 1) Get a Van with your friends and solve mysteries. 2) Get shipwrecked on a deserted Island after a three hour tour.
LOved that show!
Que serie más chula 😃, es para todos los públicos.
Mainerd G Krebs, Bob Denver! Loved this show as a kid.
He looked like a PERVERT in the opening title sequence....Actually, this WAS an intelligently written series, l watched it every week. Dig this... l was at a hospital watching TV, and saw the WHOLE SERIES sequentially. Wow.
Well,he has that look at the same time he points to the "knot hole" that does look kind of like a .... And the show starts going into and through that hole. Symbolism can be powerful
@@johnmichaelkarma knothole..... LOLOLOLOLOLOL
It was the dire script that made him seem a pervert !
Hey, I didn't know Maynard could play piano!
Hey, the Dad played Ernie the Cab Driver in "It's a Wonderful Life!" Frank Faylen.
Good catch!
Cab driver and cop were named bert and ernie. And Andrew dice clay made a movie in which he was a private eye looking for a girl named Zuzu Petals.
The teacher on Dobie Gillis would later play Dennis Mitchell's father(Dennis The Menace)

Rich L Actually, 100 or more years ago, a man had to have an established job and career before he got married. This meant men didn’t get married Until they were in their 40s and they would have to marry a younger girl to give them children.
Tee Tarquin I don’t want kids but I’ll go for the younger woman. I’ll buy them dinner.
Not anymore. 80's and 90's baby boys don't follow what 50's and 60's baby boys did.
