@@aquaex6 dont worry. Maybe you can get him as a skin for the Mii Avatar shooter thingie :D. Cause you know... those are less important characters sadly
Agree, at the beginning of Ultimate Cloud was the toughest base game character to get back, and non ironically Sora (Another Square Enix character) was (probably) the toughest DLC to get. Half of Nintendo's budget went into Square Enix characters, that little maneuver it's going to cost 'em 51 years... Well actually 5 months and 1 day considering both DLC passes sold like stupid.
Looking back: Sonic was revealed in October 2007 Steve was revealed in October 2020 Sora was revealed in October 2021 Their names all begin with an S too! It’s settled, hype internet breaking characters are always revealed during October and fun fact, Sora releases on October 19th in Japan which is Yoko Shimomura’s Birthday!
@@joserachi96 That's gonna be on my new story idea, BTW. it's gonna be about Sora finding his new place in the Video Game World, and how the 7 Worlds of the Heart were originally a shared idea of Mario and Mickey. It would be made as homage to Nintendo's partnership with Nintendo before video games were made, or how Disney became corrupt in today's world.
Seeing Sora flying out above all of those legacy characters that Sakurai and the rest of the Super Smash Bros Ultimate team worked hard to put together in a masterful celebration of videogames was such a beautiful moment. Yes, he's a beloved character from a popular title, but, above all of that, he represents precisely the magic that those games and those stories can provide. It's true that there are many greedy corporations behind those creations (especially Disney), but what makes fans fall in love with these characters is the absolute passion that the artists put in them. Nomura really brought us something special after risking so much in order to try and successfully convince Disney to let him follow his vision, and it absolutely payed off in the end. Sora in Smash is just a love letter to the fans, almost a thank-you note for joining the ride.
It was such a regal trailer too. Like I love the other trailers but all of them were like “BOOM HERE COMES CHALLENGER FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT” which was hype but with sora it was like a long time coming.
It did make me burst out in laughter when, at the end of the cinematic at the start, Sora's introduction was "Sora is Finally Here!" Sakurai, Sora, and Nintendo were just as eager for Sora as their fans were.
@@thedailypersonsopinion2099 Majority?? Hahahah you keep telling yourself that, hater. The vast majority wanted Sora to be in, and now he is!! Joy for all except petty haters.
If Nintendo was a kid trapped in the realm of Dungeons & Dragons, and Nickelodeon All Star Brawl was Venger, then that would pretty much make Disney Tiamat.
Doug debuted on Nickelodeon, but is now owned by Disney. Sakurai managed to get Sora in Smash, it's time for GameMill and Ludosity to get Quailman in NASB.
We've had confirmation multiple times that anything kingdom hearts original is Disney owned and not SquareEnix. That combined with Disney being 60 year old partners with Nintendo, and I feel the quote from sakurai was taken out of context for this video. It likely was meant to mean there was a lot of legal work to do but was overall easy. Also the Imran Khan quote comes from a speculation podcast. He didn't say Nintendo went to Disney definitively, just that sora was so big a request he doubted they didn't.
@@seqka711 well after the votes were counted they'd then have to go through the legal paperwork, which while easy would still take a long amount of time and clearly they didn't have the time for that when ending 4 and moving to ultimate.
I feel inclined to disagree due to an interview with the FFXIV director. He's a part of the Square Enix board of directors, and Disney "trusts" Square Enix, and FFXIV is the most actively played MMORPG in the world (yes, even more than WoW), however, he said he'd not consider any Kingdom Hearts collaborations in FFXIV due to the hardships of negotiating with Disney. (This was in an interview for patch 5.3 of Final Fantasy XIV, when asked about upcoming collaborations. You can find it on Eurogamer)
So here's the thing. Sora and the orgional characters in KH are NOT owned by one company. There are 3 parts to KH. The Square Enix owned reps. The Disney owned reps and then the dual owned reps that are the origional characters. I want all of you to take a moment to realize Sakurai could not get damn near ANYTHING close to Diseny Only Owned properties. Whether it be world wise, model wise, music wise, hell, not even stain glass imagery wise, Sakurai could not use anything outside of the origional KH cast. Now a lot of you may be asking how why is this? Why is it that Sakurai couldn't get anything else when Sora being in Smash means Disney gave full co-operation after a certain point? And I am here to tell you, it is because Sora is not 100% owned by Disney and thus not called a normal owned Disney Character. He is owned half and half between Disney and Square Enix along with most of the origional cast for KH. Sakurai could only use the origional KH representatives for music, stage, art, model, and of course animations because that was all Disney would allow since Sora is a Square Enix and Disney rep. Want more proof? Disney, whether it be international or just JP Disney, knows how popular and how much money KH as a franchise makes. So why wouldn't they capitalize on that via park attractions or merchandise selling of their own? Easy, that was not in the agreement with the other half that owns the franchise, that being SquareEnix. And before you say, "Oh but, maybe they had a good reason they themselves decided not to do that?" and I have one answer for you it all rides on the rights being partially owned by Square Enix. Disney has no problem capitalizing on Star Wars and Marvel as soon as they acquired them because they are super popular and make money. This would of been no different AT LEAST for JP Disney Parks. Alot of people say that Disney owns full rights to KH origional characters and I disagree entirely because not one of those articles will say it was from Iwata's or Nomura's mouth. Also to back this rights stuff up, Square Enix are the one that makes the merch and sells it off their store. Try going to a Disney exclusive store and finding KH stuff that they sell. Once more, Disney, does not own Sora or the orginal characters 100%.
Well from what I've seen Disney is getting a really nice cut out of this and Disney specified that ALL Disney characters be scrubbed from this collaboration. That's why the "heart" platforms for the stage feature no Disney characters, the only Disney related thing is the little Micky charm hanging off Sora's key blade, & and few brief moments in the trailer showing off the KH games. So Disney collecting a phat check, hardly affiliating their IP with this making this look like like a square property (also not slapping their kid friendly IP's into a fighting game) while they probably dictated the heeeeeelll out of the entire project. She is right in this video, Disney is incredibly sensitive with their properties and honestly "family friendly, & quality driven" Nintendo is the only one that could have made this work from a legal standpoint... Disney absolutely would never have said yes to doing this with Sony all starts or Microsoft's version if they ever tried to make one. Their QC just isn't there and the other mascots from those 2 would be way to mature to slap Sora next to. Kratos dripping in blood comes to mind. Even with Nintendo bending over backwards to make this work, Sora being added has been stuck in at least a 4+ years legal loop over this.
@@aidensnow5017 Disney only agreed because Nintendo is the Disney of gaming lol. While Square is just without comparison due to the quality of art they've put out since creation.
I used to work at Disney Studios, and I can tell you, the licensing for Sora was likely a nightmare for Sakurai and Nintendo. Disney is extremely protective of their properties, and the mere fact that the keyblade has the Mickey Mouse logo on the keychain is a huge legal issue, since they have very strict legal standards they impose on all their characters. This is also probably the reason you won't see Donald and Goofy alongside him, as Disney doesn't allow their characters to appear in intense combative situations of a brawler like Smash Bros. Kingdom Hearts alone required very close monitoring by Disney to ensure that their legacy characters like Donald, Goofy, and Mickey didn't appear in serious harm or in intense looking combative situations. I believe there was one cutscene in KHII which almost got canned due to strong criticism from Disney higher ups. So yeah, the fact this is happening at all shows how committed Sakurai was to convincing Disney and demonstrating Sora and their property could be displayed properly in the game. Even though Sora is technically owned by Square Enix, he shares Disney related features, such as the Mickey Mouse logo on the keyblade. These strict legal standards are also the reason Donald and Goofy are not allowed in the Sephiroth battles in the Kingdom Hearts games, as Sephiroth would be cutting them with a sword. It is indeed a miracle this happened at all.
So then, what the hell do they consider to be "serious harm or in intense looking combative situations"?! Donald Duck and his two friends, José Carioca and Panchito Pistoles, *literally died* in episode 9 of 'Legend of the Three Caballeros' (2018) Then episode 10 is all about them trying to escape the Underworld. What the heck, Disney? Stop holding your characters back.
I mean that sounds all good on paper but from playing any KH game, there’s intense combative situations happening in every encounter lol I think it has everything to do with Disney not wanting to mix their characters with other properties
@@ultra-Snedronning I am talking about about how they appear in video games. Also, I know what you're talking about, and that isn't the same or nearly the same level of appearance of danger. Disney controls what appears in that series. They DO NOT control what happens in Smash. This means Donald and Goofy would be put in situations where they are sliced by swords or shot, which is something they don't allow.
@@FrESHKid301 Not in the same way. Kingdom Hearts had intense battles, but the characters can't die, and all of the hit animations are hidden by sparkles and light flashes. Disney stretched the limit of they would allow just for that game.
Still, weather you're a fan of KH or not, the fact Sakurai was able to convince freaking Disney to cooperate & allow Sora's inclusion is just amazing on it's own. That man is miracle worker and truly earned a long rest after so many years of work to bring our favorite franchises together.
From Piranah plant to Joker, Hero, Banjo, Terry, Byleth, Min-Min, Steve, Sephiroth, Phyra & Mythra, Kazuya, and now Sora. Thank you Sakurai and his team, we appreciate it 👍
I was very happy to see Doom Slayer as a mii costume, he got representation and that’s what matters. The mii costume looks cool and having Sora is a great way to end off Super Smash Brother’s Ultimate.
It's no coincidence that Kingdom Hearts is coming to Switch in the near future and that aside from the Mickey Emblem on the Keyblade, NOTHING directly Disney is in Smash. What i draw from that is, clearly, the only permission was for Sora specifically and that it may be viewed as a marketing ploy, to drum extra interest up on KH from Smash Players who have yet to play it and answer that interest with game sales for KH, on the Switch, which Disney will earn a lot of money from, certainly far more than whatever the split is on a dlc character.
Ooooor... Sakurai simply enforced his rule about ONLY videogame-original characters joining If he let Donald, Mickey or Goofy appear, that would open the flood gates for literally any character from any form of media to join. There has to be boundaries
@@tempest2789 when i say "nothing" Disney, i'm including music, spirits, stages, cameo background characters and even symbols and other things, for example, the Final Smash could have been a Trinity attack or been a the sealing door with Donald and Goofy or we could have seen Disney Summon usage, FF7 stage style or whatever. When i say none i mean zero, to the point it's clearly not just Sakurai's self imposed rule. And even if it was the issue, your claim is it would open the flood gates for other characters.....yet it's the literal last Smash addition so there is no Flood Gate to raise. Even with the character restriction, it doesn't include the above stated things. Besides which your point makes no sense. If the only issue was Sakurais rule, then its self imposed and can be removed, but very clearly Sora not being in Smash till now wasn't because of that but rights issues. Whilst it is circumstantial, the fact that Kingdom Hearts saga is announced the exact time he's included in Smash is suspicious. As i outlined, Disney is clearly not averse to making money and i'd certainly not be surprised that the games coming to Switch and that Nintendo used their Smash video to promote it, was a condition to granting permission for Sora, with permission for nothing else. Of course, all three benefit, Nintendo, Square and Disney but it certainly wasn't Square being the problem, nor Nintendo. Hopefully you understand my point.
@@MrXMysteriousX I understand your point, but I disagree First off, you are making a lot of assumptions based on little to no evidence. We do not know what happens behind closed corporate doors. 1) "when i say "nothing" Disney, i'm including music, spirits, stages, cameo background characters and even symbols and other things, for example, the Final Smash could have been a Trinity attack or been a the sealing door with Donald and Goofy or we could have seen Disney Summon usage, FF7 stage style or whatever." This all applies to the "Videogames only" rule. If you allow spirits, music, stages or whatever with non-videogame characters, you're starting a snowball effect of allowing any franchise of any form of media to be represented in some way, shape or form. 2) " it's clearly not just Sakurai's self imposed rule." Unless you can point me to an example of a non-videogame character/item/spirit/stage/music being in Smash, at the moment, your point does not hold up. 3) "Even with the character restriction, it doesn't include the above stated things" It's not limited to characters. It applies to the game as a whole. 4) "your claim is it would open the flood gates for other characters.....yet it's the literal last Smash addition so there is no Flood Gate to raise." You are aware that Smash is a continuing franchise with no plan of stopping, right? If they let non-videogame characters in this one, for the next one, the public will go crazy asking for the likes of Naruto and Goku, for example, and they can actually say their complains are valid since Disney got their non-videogames characters in. It's called looking at the bigger picture. 5) "If the only issue was Sakurais rule, then its self imposed and can be removed" Sure, but a) It wouldn't be that easy since he would still need to convince Nintendo's overlords (who are the ones that choose the DLC, Sakurai just follows orders) and b) Why would he? 6) "clearly Sora not being in Smash till now" Many characters weren't in Smash for many years for many reasons. Nintendo didn't even start doing third party until Brawl and DLC became a thing in Smash 4, the previous title. Half the DLC of Smash4 were old characters returning with only a few third parties (Ryu, Bayonetta and Cloud). There's things like time, development of the character, promotion of other games, legal agreements to be made, etc. Sora not being in until now could simply be because negotiations would've taken longer than time allowed for Smash4's DLC 7) "Whilst it is circumstantial, the fact that Kingdom Hearts saga is announced the exact time he's included in Smash is suspicious" Hero came in when Dragon Quest 11 was coming to the Switch. Bayo came into Smash after becoming a Nintendo exclusive. Joker came when Persona 5 Strikers was coming to the Switch. Sora is not an exclusive case of using Smash to promote a series coming to the Switch.
Disney Interactive existed when SSB4 DLC was coming out. When the division ended, Disney became more willing to license out their properties like Jack Sparrow in Sea of Thieves This mindset could be why they eventually let Sora later into SSBU
And after Kingdom Hearts 3 and the ReMind DLC, Sora had no further purpose other than mobile phone games. So Disney had to let Sora go and join Smash Bros.
@@orangeslash1667 I mean, Microsoft has already put their previously exclusive Xbox titles like Halo, Forza and Gears on Steam. Microsoft probably values total sales across platforms more than exclusivity.
Reason for Sora in Smash Nickelodeon: Were releasing a 2d platformer fighting game with old iconic characters you grew up with. Disney: So that's how you wanna play...
If Nintendo was able to get Sora in Smash, they can get anyone. His highly debated inclusion along with widespread disinformation covered up any leaks early on. Sephiroth's inclusion likely led many, including myself, to think Sora would be impossible for Smash. Without Sakurai's immense passion to please his fans, Nintendo would have likely never pursued further beyond Sephiroth. I'm really glad Sora is in. I was hoping for Ryu Hayabusa, at least as a dlc mii costume, but it seems those dreams will be put aside for now. Sora is the perfect final character for Smash. I can't wait to play him October 18th. Thank you Sakurai for Super Smash Bros Ultimate.
@@caturviriyananda9586 I think K. Rool, Ridley, Sora, Banjo and Kazooie in Smash 4 would be a bad idea because characters like Cloud and Bayonetta are very easy to develop. The formers characters I Mentioned may require a bit more creatively to do them justice, and that's exactly what happened.
Sora being the final character makes sense when you remember that Joker, the phantom thief who steals hearts, was the first DLC character & Sora, a Keyblade Warrior who returns lost hearts to where they belong, is confirmed to be the final DLC character Imagine the rivalry these two will have

Kind of fitting how Sora was created and joined Smash Bros thanks to collaboration. You know, because Kingdom Hearts emphasizes the importance of the power of friendship
Sora is a character that represents innocence, and friendship and hope and light. And the reveal was done perfectly. And it's just such a fitting note to end on. I can't really think of any other way to end these reveals and end this game other than on a note of light and hope-especially CONSIDERING the main theme of this Smash is LITERALLY CALLED Lifelight. It's too perfect lol.
Khan, while being an industry insider, during that quote was purely speculating that Disney said no. Meanwhile HMK asked a Disney rep and they said Disney would love for Sora to be in smash. Obviously, that's the case now
This makes me a bit conflicted about where I'd like to see KH going in the future. KH without Disney would feel... Wrong. Specially without Donald, Goody and Mickey. But on the other hand, now that KH is more than capable of standing on it's own, I can't help but wonder if it wouldn't be better for them to let go of the Disney aspect moving forward. If Disney really is so restrictive with their properties (and I think we all believe they are), I'd really hate for that to hinder KH's development. I think KH could do fine on it's own. As an example, KHUX, the mobile game that finished not long ago, had almost no Disney aspects in it's main story at all (Wreck it Ralph was there by the end... But they could have replaced that with a generic digital world and it would have worked just fine) and it had one of, in my opninion, the BEST stories of any KH game (seriously, if you're a KH fan and haven't checked it out because "mobile game bad", do give it a chance. I'm sure you'll love it). And I feel like the story is in a really good place to leave Disney behind... TL;DR: I think KH has grown to the point where it can stand on it's own without Disney. As much as I think it would be taking an important part away, maybe it'd be best if it left Disney behind moving forward. [SPOILERS FOR KHUX AND KH3] With the recent developments in KH about "the unreality/fiction world", somewhere outside of what we know of the KH universe, and Sora heading towards (apparently) this "unreality/fiction" at the end of KH3 (his encounter with Yozora, an in-universe videogame character, and being in what appears to be TWEWY's Shibuya) it feels like they are trying to find a way to *literally* take the characters out of the Disney worlds and into their own thing. I could very well see the gang of KH-originals following Sora into this world for the next saga, leaving the Disney characters behind to "protect the realm of light while they aren't there". Hell, it could even be an emotional and well deserved send-off to these characters we know and love. Sora saying goodbye to the friends he has traveled with for years, Riku to the one friend he had while he was struggling with himself and his darkness, and Kairi... Saying bye to... Merlin? Idk. The point is, it could be a stellar opportunity to leave this part that could hinder KH, while at the same time paying it due respect and having an in-universe explanation for it all. I don't know... I've been rambling for long enough now... If you read all this way, thank you for listening to the ramblings of yet another crazy KH fan. Have a great morning/afternoon/evening.
Actually, it could go both ways. As what it appears, Sora will explore the World of Fiction and may focus on Square and potentially other properties. Meanwhile, with Kairi still stuck in the World of Light (and Disney's obsession with Strong Female Characters lately), she would be the one exploring Disney Worlds alongside Lee and the others.
Based on the Last game play we got in KH3 you are right that Sora or better say KH can go on his own withoud the Disney charather because let all be real most of his Attack are based on FF game style of fighting and seeing how they do want het out of it with small preview it chould work. Still we dont leave Goofy, Donald or Mickey because they did bring a big role in the story it self at this point i do think too they van make a game without the Disney charather if the new KH4 plan to do this in the next 10 year in making
I like Disney Worlds in KH, but I would love to see a game without these aspects, DDD and Re:Mind have already given loopholes to The World Ends with You, it would be nice for other Square properties to come in as Mana or Dragon Quest (maybe Dragon Quest either because of my desire to see Sora in the style of DBZ)
The Moral of This Story is, "If you believe hard enough, and never let go of your faith without bothering others, there's a good chance a miracle can happen when you wait long enough for something."
Sakurai: Disney may we please add sora to smash? Disney: Ney I say, neeeyyy!? Sakurai: We promise to show who really owns the property, I mean the Mickey Mouse logo is literally part of the character. *GRASPS SHOULDER* Disney: I knew you’d see it my way. Agreed
4:31 My theory is more to do with cross-promotion. Kingdom Hearts was eventually going to come to the Switch, and when it did, why not allow Nintendo to help push more consumers to buy the ports of the remasters to Switch? Nintendo would have to pay a hefty fee anyways, it's more promotion for them. There's that, and it all concides with Kingdom Heart's anniversary this year, and on top of that -- I wouldn't put it past Nomura-san if he intends to use this somehow to be lore for Kingdom Hearts 4, or 5, or whatever game he's making next (considering what explanation we got of where Sora could potentially be in the Switch KH spinoff game)
I love that so many times people posted around that Sora was "disqualified" from Smash as he is a Disney property, but I guess if you strip away EVERYTHING Disney from Sora then you can have him be in Smash as there is no representation of Disney to being with.
Why is Sora in the game? Because he's by far the most requested character, as revealed in an online poll run by Masahiro Sakurai and the team at Sora Ltd several years ago. well they got sora and he has moves most anime sword fighters already had we could have gotten an original character like waluigi or geno but sure lets just get an echo
Nintendo and Disney have a great relationship with each other that goes all the way back to the 1950's and at the kingdom hearts 3 launch party youtuber HMK was invited to that launch party and he asked a Disney representative about sora's chances of getting into smash and the representative said Disney wants sora in smash and if Nintendo approaches them and asks for sora they will allow it to happen, the youtuber HMK talks about it in his video who owns sora
It's such a weird thought in my mind that Disney technically owns every KH character, or at least the rights to them to some degree. The thought of all the former organization members being Disney characters is baffling to me.
I’m still speechless! Like I doubted Sora because he’s one of my most requested character for Smash 4 but never showed up and then Sakurai made that rule about no none video games characters in smash bro’s and he’s a Disney character, but now he’s here and IM NOW ALL EMOTIONAL 😭
The "only characters that are original from videogames" rule exists since the first game, dude. Sora was possible because he was created to a videogame, but the Disney characters didn't have a chance and they will never be in Smash.
7 years ago Sakurai: hey, can we have Sora in Smash? Disney: no. Sora is our character Now: Disney: hey, Sakurai? Sakurai: yeah? Disney: remember 6 years ago when we said Sora couldn't be in Smash? Sakurai: yeah Disney: he can be in now Sakurai to the fanbase: Sora Joins the Battle! Smash fans: 🎵we are the champions🎵
A very positive way of explaining the whole matter. I imagine reality must have been much more crude, violent and pathetic. I can see many suits set to destroy the project just for spite or pride...

3:55 Oooooh, that was a smart move on their part to not let the public know that Sora was the most popular pick for the poll and that they were trying to make it happen because who knows what would've happened if fans sabotaged themselves with trying to get Sora in Smash? Oof.
Moral of the story The glove are on get ready to play hard If Nintendo and lego are able build something together Square sharing character with Nintendo Square and Disney okay playing by a few different rules too Nintendo and Disney can do same to same to do something amazing
Im just going to point you in the direction of HMK, who does a video talking about a few extra tidbits that have come out, assuming the translation is accurate. the short version is that sakurai mentioned the idea to a disney employee in passing, just to find support. With the help of the person who knew the inside of disney better than most, the idea was able to climb the ladder to actual discussions. As a result, sora was dlc for the dlc. The obvious negotiation hell made the team hesitant on including sora as a slot, so they planned 5 fighters other fighters to match the first pass' format and numbers, but when the negotiations made progress, they were able to add sora to the pass plans, bringing the total number to 6. With the pass announced with 6, it is pretty safe to assume the negotiations over sora were complete or at least nearing completion by the time the pass was even announced.
I heard someone said even though disney holds the rights to kingdom hearts they need to always asks Tetsuya Nomura who is the creator of Sora and kingdom heart to get permission from him out of respect if they wanted to use Sora for anything.
Sora as the final DLC character made sense. I mean, it makes sense for the final DLC character to be a fan favourite and Sora filled that role. Wouldn’t make sense for it to be some random dude nobody knows about like Xnopyt the Forbidden Word God from Memelandia.
Indeed. I am curious about what the revenue split is between Nintendo, Square and Disney; how much of the 6 dollars does each get for every person who downloads him?
I was just having a conversation with some friends about how Sora’s DLC on the eshop may get delisted sooner than any of the other DLC third party characters and Mii costumes in the coming years cause of how Disney is with video games. Even in World of Final Fantasy, when Sora was added to that game it was only for a very limited time.
Actually the end should have been. "Sora wouldn't have been in smash if it wasn't for us. Ever since snake got revealed that third party requests can be added we started requesting collaberations with many different characters, sonic made it into brawl BECAUSE Sega later realized how many people really wanted him to be in smash, which is.. a game based on icon collaberation. it later on got very very popular, that also since they couldn't reveal sors did won the ballot. Since bayonetta was chosen for keeping fans calm if sora was announced when many people might not know smash.. (it was the wiiu version..) and one big reason bayonetta was the top choice is "nobody else is more icon than bayonetta since.. well you can realize her in real life." Now since they cooperated with so many companies that aren't actually nintendo, the switch as a fan love console, many fighters that are from different companies than just games.... and the love for the game and such made disney realize how iconic smash is to alot of people. They made impossible characters possible. And.. yeah
It's a truly magical moment for gaming as a whole, befitting of a Disney character. The stars have aligned just right for this to have even happened. I'm very grateful that Sora is in Smash, and I thank Sakurai and his team for making it happen.
I think I have a theory as to why Disney caved in. If it had not been for the exsistence of Detective Pikachi and Sonic the Hedgehog’s wild success, I don’t think we would’ve seen Disney even considering the option, but with these films success, and with another one on the way (Super Mario the Movie) I think that they’re thinking bigger. I think that DISNEYs gonna be the one to create the SSBCU. (Technically Disney owns the rights to Sora, so they can make a Kingdom Hearts movie whenever they want. The problem is going to be getting the other film companies to “fork over” the characters they made in previous films...)
While I've long outgrown my adoration of the KH series, Sora's reveal was genuinely a nice surprise. One of the biggest things the series had going for it from the start was the outlandish yet functional collaboration of Disney and Final Fantasy elements. It felt like a celebration of gaming becoming a more recognised medium back in the early 2000's and was a large part of why I got so into the series. Fast-forward to the Smash Ultimate's reveal and I had a similar experience seeing so many franchises and characters in one place. The series has always been a celebration of Nintendo's games which is great, but starting all the way back in Brawl onwards that sense of celebration started to shift toward being one for gaming as a whole. Seeing Sora join the roster is honestly perfect, layers upon layers of collaborations to provide something fresh and exciting in an otherwise dreary year in a way that, outside of Smash, only Kingdom Hearts has ever made me feel so compelled by in that unique manner. Sure the mouse has a stranglehold on the series and as a result we ended up with a watered down version of Sora, but it's still an incredible feat that they even got the rights to use him at all. The missing Donald & Goofy from the stage background and lack of Disney themed music from the series is a bit on the sad side, but I still love the music they went with. What I love a whole lot less is them gating another track behind the rhythm game, but it's not like I have to have it and at least I can finally play KH3 since up until now it hasn't released on a console I own or a PC storefront I like.
I just remembered the Shin Megami Tensei Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse demons, I wonder how Disney feels about that? Either way, I’m pretty happy that Sora is in Smash! I played Kingdom Hearts 1 when I was younger, though I got stuck on the Tarzan area.
@@daleketchup7434 Well, kinda. They're in the game's files, but they go unused and went by the names 'Zombie Mouse' and 'Demon Duck.' They were later implemented in the PC Engine port, but they're appearances were drastically altered in that game to the point that it was barely a reference anymore.
Wouldn't it be hysterical if you download the sora dlc and go to the character select screen and off at the very bottom next to Sora is Waluigi. No trailer, no acknowledgement, no nothing he is just there and playable.
That would be epic, but I doubt that would ever happen. Wouldn't make much sense to just give a character for free. Then again, it's smash bros so who knows.
The second I saw the Disney symbol on Sora's keyblade, I burst out into tears knowing that my childhood was making an epic return to my life, this has been a character I have wanted since I began my smash bros career in brawl

Now we know why the second fighters pass was 6 characters instead of 5
Seeing Sora flying out above all of those legacy characters that Sakurai and the rest of the Super Smash Bros Ultimate team worked hard to put together in a masterful celebration of videogames was such a beautiful moment.

I think if it was easy, it would have happened for the Wii U. The fighter ballot WAS for that game, after all.

I'd love to have been a fly on the wall, witnessing the negotiations to have Sora in Smash

Ooooor... Sakurai simply enforced his rule about ONLY videogame-original characters joining
If he let Donald, Mickey or Goofy appear, that would open the flood gates for literally any character from any form of media to join.
@@MrXMysteriousX I understand your point, but I disagree
First off, you are making a lot of assumptions based on little to no evidence. We do not know what happens behind closed corporate doors.
1) "when i say "nothing" Disney, i'm including music, spirits, stages, cameo background characters and even symbols and other things, for example, the Final Smash could have been a Trinity attack or been a the sealing door with Donald and Goofy or we could have seen Disney Summon usage, FF7 stage style or whatever."
This all applies to the "Videogames only" rule. If you allow spirits, music, stages or whatever with non-videogame characters, you're starting a snowball effect of allowing any franchise of any form of media to be represented in some way, shape or form.
2) " it's clearly not just Sakurai's self imposed rule."
Unless you can point me to an example of a non-videogame character/item/spirit/stage/music being in Smash, at the moment, your point does not hold up.
3) "Even with the character restriction, it doesn't include the above stated things"
It's not limited to characters. It applies to the game as a whole.
4) "your claim is it would open the flood gates for other characters.....yet it's the literal last Smash addition so there is no Flood Gate to raise."
You are aware that Smash is a continuing franchise with no plan of stopping, right? If they let non-videogame characters in this one, for the next one, the public will go crazy asking for the likes of Naruto and Goku, for example, and they can actually say their complains are valid since Disney got their non-videogames characters in. It's called looking at the bigger picture.
5) "If the only issue was Sakurais rule, then its self imposed and can be removed"
Sure, but a) It wouldn't be that easy since he would still need to convince Nintendo's overlords (who are the ones that choose the DLC, Sakurai just follows orders) and b) Why would he?
6) "clearly Sora not being in Smash till now"
Many characters weren't in Smash for many years for many reasons. Sora not being in until now could simply be because negotiations would've taken longer than time allowed for Smash4's DLC
7) "Whilst it is circumstantial, the fact that Kingdom Hearts saga is announced the exact time he's included in Smash is suspicious"
Hero came in when Dragon Quest 11 was coming to the Switch.
When the division ended, Disney became more willing to license out their properties like Jack Sparrow in Sea of Thieves
This mindset could be why they eventually let Sora later into SSBU
Thanks

Khan, while being an industry insider, during that quote was purely speculating that Disney said no. Meanwhile HMK asked a Disney rep and they said Disney would love for Sora to be in smash. Obviously, that's the case now
you see that's the story I heard the most, I wonder why no one had brought that up yet.
Wrong. Disney said yes years ago. Tetsuya Nomura was the one who initially said no.
[SPOILERS FOR KHUX AND KH3]
With the recent developments in KH about "the unreality/fiction world", somewhere outside of what we know of the KH universe, and Sora heading towards (apparently) this "unreality/fiction" at the end of KH3 (his encounter with Yozora, an in-universe videogame character, and being in what appears to be TWEWY's Shibuya) it feels like they are trying to find a way to *literally* take the characters out of the Disney worlds and into their own thing.
Honestly, Kingdom Hearts would've been better off without turning into "Pooh's Adventures in" fan fiction passing itself as actual stories.
I can’t wait to see Quadratum...

Nintendo would have to pay a hefty fee anyways, it's more promotion for them.

Disney: "We don't deal with Nintendo."
Also Disney: *Releases Kingdom Hearts games on multiple Nintendo Systems*
The final moral to this story:
Good things come to those who wait.
What made Disney decide to allow Sora was Selling their games on the switch. The dlc alone wasn’t enough money for them.
Character born from collaboration of two titan companies is the final character ro be added in thr biggest collaboration game of all time.
Disney agreed because they finally realized how profitable Kingdom Hearts is.
I mean Sora is still a video game character by origin. Notice how no other Disney character or references are present.
The "only characters that are original from videogames" rule exists since the first game, dude. Sora was possible because he was created to a videogame, but the Disney characters didn't have a chance and they will never be in Smash.
How've you been dude? It's been a while
You did all this video in less than a day, amazing
7 years ago
Sakurai: hey, can we have Sora in Smash?
Disney: no. Sora is our character
Now:
Disney: hey, Sakurai?
Sakurai: yeah?
Disney: remember 6 years ago when we said Sora couldn't be in Smash?
Sakurai: yeah
Disney: he can be in now
Sakurai to the fanbase: Sora Joins the Battle!
Smash fans: 🎵we are the champions🎵
We’ve truly been blessed!!
A very positive way of explaining the whole matter. I imagine reality must have been much more crude, violent and pathetic. I can see many suits set to destroy the project just for spite or pride...
Man Video game story is such a great news channel! Can't wait to learn more Story's from back then there so interesting! And Exiting as well! Good luck on your next Vid :D
Simple answer:
Sakurai: Darkness
Disney: Darkness
"The one who let Sora in said darkness."
3:55 Oooooh, that was a smart move on their part to not let the public know that Sora was the most popular pick for the poll and that they were trying to make it happen because who knows what would've happened if fans sabotaged themselves with trying to get Sora in Smash? Oof.
I was eagerly awaiting for this video! Thank you!
Moral of the story
The glove are on get ready to play hard
If Nintendo and lego are able build something together
Square sharing character with Nintendo
Square and Disney okay playing by a few different rules too
Nintendo and Disney can do same to same to do something amazing
Seeing as how Nintendo had to butt heads with the house of mouse just to get Sora in smash, and succeeded, astounds me
I heard someone said even though disney holds the rights to kingdom hearts they need to always asks Tetsuya Nomura who is the creator of Sora and kingdom heart to get permission from him out of respect if they wanted to use Sora for anything.
That is correct
Sora as the final DLC character made sense.
I mean, it makes sense for the final DLC character to be a fan favourite and Sora filled that role.
Wouldn’t make sense for it to be some random dude nobody knows about like Xnopyt the Forbidden Word God from Memelandia.
The real reason:
Disney: "I like money."
Nintendo: "Here's a pile."
Indeed. I am curious about what the revenue split is between Nintendo, Square and Disney; how much of the 6 dollars does each get for every person who downloads him?
@@countrystud1986 Probably:
Disney $5
Nintendo $0.75
Square: Everything else the retailers didn't get.
@@countrystud1986 Probably get a huge portion of the KH ports. That was probably a huge part of the deal.
3:05
Hey!! That doorknob is Blanky from The Brave Little Toaster!
Talk about a deep cut there
This is very informative. Thank You! It's great that Sora made it in at all.
2:59 “Square Enix’s proven track record.”
Square Enix didn’t exist when KH was created
When companies merge all that previous history is take as part of the legacy of the newer company. Always happens.
In 13 days, the 13th fighter comes in version 13.0.0.
Nomura and Sakurai are madmen.
Sora's original home Disney Channel has died in TV so they've returned by joining in a popular video game
Okay that ending panel was funny and cute, props to your comic book style
I was just having a conversation with some friends about how Sora’s DLC on the eshop may get delisted sooner than any of the other DLC third party characters and Mii costumes in the coming years cause of how Disney is with video games.
Even in World of Final Fantasy, when Sora was added to that game it was only for a very limited time.
Being in Smash Bros is the quintessential equivalent of being entered into a hall of fame of sorts
In my headcanon, Sakurai challenged Disney corporates in a best of 3 in smash bros to get Sora
Anybody notice how Sora being released on October 18, 2021 is 2 days away from Disney’s 98th anniversary from October 16, 1923
So, Disney was the reason of Sora not being able to get in smash before hand?
"Allegedly"
Undoubtedly. That Nintendo worked out any licensing deal with Disney at all is quite the feat.
And then Nintendo made Disney say darkness
Actually the end should have been. "Sora wouldn't have been in smash if it wasn't for us. Ever since snake got revealed that third party requests can be added we started requesting collaberations with many different characters, sonic made it into brawl BECAUSE Sega later realized how many people really wanted him to be in smash, which is.. a game based on icon collaberation.
it later on got very very popular, that also since they couldn't reveal sors did won the ballot. Since bayonetta was chosen for keeping fans calm if sora was announced when many people might not know smash.. (it was the wiiu version..) and one big reason bayonetta was the top choice is "nobody else is more icon than bayonetta since.. well you can realize her in real life."
Now since they cooperated with so many companies that aren't actually nintendo, the switch as a fan love console, many fighters that are from different companies than just games.... and the love for the game and such made disney realize how iconic smash is to alot of people. They made impossible characters possible. And.. yeah
Well He Was The Most Requested Smash Fighter In Smash History! More Than Waluigi!
Communication and compromise are the keys to everything in life. This gives me hope for the world.
And of course, the main reason: Those Sweet Dahllah Dahllah Bills.
There’s a Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse demon?
@@daleketchup7434 Well, kinda. They're in the game's files, but they go unused and went by the names 'Zombie Mouse' and 'Demon Duck.' They were later implemented in the PC Engine port, but they're appearances were drastically altered in that game to the point that it was barely a reference anymore.
Now, everyone is happy and the story is at it's end!
The End!!!
i like to think of that one scene between doctor strange and dormamu went down between the two companies.
The first keyblade shot probably costed more than the sora dlc himself
I was genuinely hoping you would make this a video
I never thought I would say this Sora made it in
Im happy there's no disney characters even as a spirit
same
Yeah. Otherwise, Disney would really come down hard on Nintendo.
How can people dislike this great video?
Wouldn't it be hysterical if you download the sora dlc and go to the character select screen and off at the very bottom next to Sora is Waluigi. No trailer, no acknowledgement, no nothing he is just there and playable.
That would be epic, but I doubt that would ever happen. Wouldn't make much sense to just give a character for free. Then again, it's smash bros so who knows.
Kingdom Hearts’ entire existence is really so special and I’m SO HAPPY Sora is in Smash❤️
I think Sora migth now have record being the most crossed crossover character ever, Handshake with Mario was beautiful moment
Man you guys were quick
The second I saw the Disney symbol on Sora's keyblade, I burst out into tears knowing that my childhood was making an epic return to my life, this has been a character I have wanted since I began my smash bros career in brawl
