Dark Pulse is like the Pokemon equivalent of Killing Intent. It causes stress on the body and mind of the afflicted, and if they can’t handle the malicious aura, they can’t continue fighting

I think the meaning of the Dark type is mostly applied to being underhanded. Every dark type move has a side effect to it, almost nothing that just does straight damage. Would also explain the psychic immunity, as psychic stuff is usually depicted as requiring focus, which disrupting and disturbing the fight by playing dirty would certainly take.
Then the whole idea of the dark being the most common fear, bugs primarily spiders the 2nd most. Everyone at some point fears the dark, whether you're an adult or everyone has as a child. That psychic is like awakening the 6th sense, a 3rd eye you're more susceptible to things you can't explain, the dark itself, the unknown, monsters hiding in the darkness, strangers/evil people. I don't think it's mostly applied to that, I think they intentionally put a lot of effort into this type, meaning all these things. You got underhanded (no Pokemon is truly evil only the trainers or our interpretation etc) like Pangoro or Incineroar, Pokemon that just live in darkness like Umbreon or Houndoom, Pokemon that aren't evil but harness the energy such as Absol, you have Darkrai the embodiment of darkness itself. Meanwhile Pokemon that you could call evil like Giratina with the possibility of being Lucifer/Satan, Kyurem that's the zombie remains of the one dragon eating people, children, and Pokemon to keep itself alive just because it has no soul and Necrozma under similar circumstances. These are "evil" Pokemon but aren't the dark type, then there's Hoopa that isn't dark type but is underhanded... until it goes unbound where it is more sinister and evil.
Sand Attack should be a dark type move, it's a pretty dirty tactic to put sand in someone's eyes, and also it can hit flying types, something other ground moves can't
That explains why Spider-Man's Dark Forme is known for the infamous threat "I'm gonna put dirt in your eye." EDIT: Dang, the lad above me beat me to it.
Throat Chop has always seemed to encapsulate the "underhanded" tactics I associate with the Dark Type. "Hit them in the throat so hard they can't call for help."
Throat chopping is absolutely a cheap move. Plus, you can really hurt or kill someone doing that. Why isn't headbutt a dark move? Headbutting someone is also a cheap move and it causes flinching.
@canaisyoung3601 Headbutts are more of an easy and simple move. It's just ramming into your opponent, any Eevee or even Weedle could do that. Chopping someone's throat is a lot more of a calculated move, that requires at least some skill.

@@nirgunawish I like the ghost types that aren’t evil undead creatures. Like Frillish is ghost-like but not a ghost, it’s just flowy and ephemeral. Sableye isn’t a ghost it’s just a secret creature that vanishes in the shadows
In Spanish is less ambiguous and more straightforward with the explanation Lockstin gave us. Is called "sinister" type, covering both the trickster mischievous and the dark, frightening side.
The main way i look at psychic vs dark is dark type being considered tricksters. They confuse and disorient the psychic type with their tricks and underhanded tactics
i always went by psychic uses the mind of the pokemon to attack, dark types have dark thoughts and so psychic types can't or refuse to enter there minds.
@Zwoolk This sounds more realistic then the thought of @Goofy Goober. When im thinking about Alakazam having such a high IQ and then being tricked sounds not that logical. But either way i like both thoughts of you guys. Have a nice day!
@@soplexus You can still fool a genius with sleight of hand, or better yet, a swift, sudden strike at an unsuspecting individual. A lot of dark types have more to do with being sneaky than purely evil.
Perhaps a reason Dark is strong against ghost could be how the darkness greatly disturb spiritual purity. Ghosts are fickle and very emotionaly influenciable, so dark elements will cause a lot of harm to those emotionaly fragile.
I suppose it allows Psychic-types to peer past the generally negative energy the Dark-types output, which I guess is such an overwhelming feat for them that it's labeled a "miracle".
I guess it could be that the move opens a “third-eye” that strengthens focus so that the moves can go beyond the mind barrier either of or imposed by the Dark-type
About the relation between Dark and Psychic, i like to think it's more about society, especially outcasts and taboo. Think of Absol (announces calamities), Pangoro (a japanese delinquant) or Spiritomb (a banished evil spirit). Most Dark types are away from society, thus not spoken of, or messing with it. They won't care in the slightest either way however, hence their immunity.
I feel bad for absol, it could have been just psychic due to its ability to foresee the future, hence it could sense calamities, yet people shunned it for its connection to all bad things that was about to happen
And even after it becomes Mega Absol, a being that can do more to prevent disasters, it still makes people faint, calling to mind receiving news from a god, meaning it is still seen as causing misfortune but as a god or as a fallen angel with strange morality
Dark types being immune to psychic types, due to their "twisted" state of mind, is similar to the times Marvel's Ghost Rider couldn't use his penance stare against characters like Thanos who enjoy the suffering of others.
They keep making cop outs for the Penance Stare just so Ghost Rider can't merc assholes. Thanos enjoys suffering? So do a BUNCH of normal human psychos. Punisher doesn't feel bad about what he does? Neither do a TON of criminals.
@@zeusdemi6858 it worked against Galactus, and to him, there’s nothing to regret, he NEEDS to eat or else he will starve and die. Yet it doesn’t work on Thanos or the Punisher? Galactus is infinitely stronger than Thanos, and also feels no regret about his actions, but the Penance Stare knocked him out cold.
For the the Fairy type resisting Dark, I’d say the reason is Fairies, specifically the Fae or Fair Folk, are known for causing mischief and doing devious deeds similar to what the Dark type does. So they know all the tricks and how to avoid them. The big difference is Dark-types let you know they’re evil, fight dirty and mischievous. The Fae and fairies do the same things as them but with innocent facades, or operating on logic you would understand not thinking it’s evil or a dirty trick. To paraphrase Jack Sparrow “You can always trust a dishonest man to be dishonest (Dark-types), it’s the honest ones (Fairy-types) you have to watch out for, the day they deceive you, you’ll never see it coming.”
@@Sakaajani3625 I don't think this counts as evidence but in the Mortal Instruments books, they said fairies have the beauty of angels and the trickery of demons. That's sort of the point in the fairy type pokemon video, some of them have nasty tricks up their sleeves, as you would expect when medieval people believed mushroom circles are portals to the fairy world. Step in and you'll get trapped there until the fairies feel like letting you go. Or legends like sirens luring you to your death because the music is so pretty...
Same here, though I think it's more of a mix between the ones that embody darkness and evil (which is why Fairy types can beat them: the old "Good vs evil" fight with good triumphing over evil) and the ones that pull dirty tricks to win fights (which is why fighting types can beat them: dirty tricks can't win against someone or something that's trained to counter and avoid those type of attacks. And there's also the "good vs. evil" fight tucked away in there).
11:33 I'm also pretty sure that beetles were a big inspiration for the design of Samurai armor specifically the helmets. Love this video because of how many themes you used to explain, various scientific points, believes, etc...
Basically, a Pokemon is Dark type because it is literally evil (Spiritomb), is not evil but does things that we can consider evil (Yveltal killing Pokemon and humans to balance the ecosistem, Tyranitar and Hydreigon being extremely aggressive by nature, Hoopa with it's tricks...), or because it's related to the darkness, either it lives in/with the darkness (Sableye, Umbreon) or because it is literal darkness (Darkrai). At least this is how I see it
Lockstin at the end: "Preferably while setting your UA-cam interface to dark mode." Me: I've must've been playing 4D chess, because mine's been in dark mode for YEARS!!!
at 1:00, the japanese on screen just says aku taipu not akuma taipu Bulbapedia is also saying that the type's name is aku taipu. While it doesn't really change your explanation, it adds an unnessessary emphasis on demons/devils/"akuma" specifically that wouldn't exist if you translated/read it properly. No shade (pun?) but I just wanted to point it out :D
Another reason for ghost & psychic types also being weak to Dark making sense with the "evil type" understanding, they're probably the 2 types most inherently drawn to it. Disclaimer that most of this can easily be dismissed as reaching, since it's mainly looking at what we can see/ expect from the types as a whole, and how those interact when taken as an allegory for people. Normal and Fighting are others that I imagine would feel that same allure more strongly than the rest of the types, but they're both more grounded; Normal type is "normal", which in this regard could be seen as having a relatively well balanced sense of morals, or being an analogy for relatively ordinary or neurotypical people who might tend to see less discrimination or be picked on less growing up and thus being more removed from those dark topics. As for Fighting, you said so yourself about it being related to honourability and discipline, so while the possession of power lures one to look for opportunities to use it, a disciplined and honourable fighter should have the self-restraint to not give in to such temptations. To be a psychic, you'd presumably be quite smart, or at least be inclined to think a lot. And if you're thinking a lot you'll probably get stuck in your own head from time to time, and when you're there it's easy to get into negative spirals; Either thinking about a bad situation and getting tripped up by pessimism, or thinking about doing something bad yourself and overthinking it trying to rationalise "would it really be that bad?", both of which even if you only were critiquing the thought can still lead to some dark places. It's easier to find the dark than to leave it, and it's easy to get lost when you're there. There's also the flip side to the Normal type analogy of being neurodivergent, hence the psychic prowess that "normal people" don't have, and the kind of misunderstandings or bullying that can come from being perceived to be abnormal, and the frustrations and sadness that can build up from that. In that regard, it'd be easier to grow into someone more affected by dark thoughts. The Ghost types in Pokemon frequently seem to be depicted as mischievous pranksters, being of generally harmless intent and just wanting to play mostly. While that's all well and fine, "the joke that takes things too far" is a very well known phenomenon. There are people who do/ did harmful things while not meaning to do any harm at all, because they thought it'd just be a fun prank that they'd all be able to laugh about. There are also people who are actively malicious, who see the creativity and ingenuity some of those prankster types display, and recognise the value of it, and who might encourage it, but push them towards their own ends. The innocently meaning prankster being taken advantage of by an influential figure who meant them or others harm. Alternatively for those types, there seems to be a drive to top yourself, outdo your previous pranks, which can often be what causes the joke to go to far in the first place. The Lavender tower ghosts in the anime for example were entirely good natured, but actually maybe killed Ash & Pikachu by accident for an afternoon because they were just playing and things got out of hand. Also, as a Ghost type, it could be that sense of "why not?" is increased. You're already a ghost after all, so that allure towards doing dangerous things might feel a little harder to resist. Many people struggle with being a "good person" while alive, so (for the ghost types that are literal ghosts) to have died and found yourself "alive" again I could easily see that eroding some amount of one's sense of morality, or just being tiring, making one not want to care anymore. A sense of apathy can be a dark thing by itself, but it's also an incredible enabler for darker thoughts and activities around you. Also it's notable that ghost types in particular are renowned for typically being upbeat, playful, and good humoured. Something that almost seems like it's in direct contrast to them being a ghost, until considering the question of what's left when you give up on everything and are still living regardless other than to entertain yourself. Depending on what you find amusing, and how much care remains, there's a gradient for "only looking to have fun" ghosts all the way across the harmful/ harmless to Malicious/ Benevolent spectrum. afaik It's also relatively common for people who do struggle with forms of depression to go out of their way to wear that happy "everything's fine" façade, be it as a means of keeping your head above the water (the fake it 'till you make it method) or to keep the people around you from worrying. *TL;DR:* Psychics are the most likely pokemon type to overthink themselves into a dark place/ mental state, and Ghosts are the closest to the topic of death, thus can be considered a grim subject by their nature even if they do often act jovial and friendly. They're the closest to and as such most susceptible to influenced by the Dark, be it Dark in the sense of evil, grim, gloomy, or depressed.
I’d like to see more videos of you explaining the reasoning for each type’s strengths & weaknesses. Some of them can be so hard to remember, & maybe knowing the reasoning behind them will help make remembering them easier!
I've always found Dark-types so fascinating! I'm a cheerful and usually positive person, but some of my favorite Pokemon are Dark. I've always felt they were misunderstood. Thank you for this amazing analysis video! "Consuming souls to gain power!" I came to a Pokemon video, and got Yugioh vibes! XD
For Dark's immunity to Psychic, I've always thought of it in two ways: 1) If we're talking on the "fear" bit, then you can train your mind to not be afraid of bugs or being hit anymore. Overcoming these fears will directly improve your ability to deal with these things. However, even if you overcome your fear of the darkness, the darkness will still hinder you. It's not like you'll magically develop night vision or something. 2) Maybe Dark types are _literally_ dark to Psychic types. Maybe they have a natural mental shield from birth that not just protects them but makes their minds invisible and/or invulnerable to Psychics, and that's why they can't deal damage to them.
i love the little stock photos you put in all your videos whenever you mention something, it adds a whole fun little layer that just helps make them so great. my favorite is the 'evil act' at 16:44
Many types can actually represent multiple things. Fairy-type can also represent a form of Light-type. Ghost-type can also be seen as a Shadow-type considering the amorphous and shadow-like physiology of many Ghosts-types. Flying-type can also be considered the Air-type, as a lot of Flying-type moves has to do with wind/air-based attacks.
@@njfernandes87 I think it has to do with Poison being the closest word to the riginal Japanese. And I*m pretty sure Japanese only have one word for both Poison and Venom, as other languages do, and so the dubbing team just went with Poison.
@@Lupinemancer87 Actually, poison in Japanese is "doku" (毒) and venom is "dokueki" (毒液). The Poison type in Japanese is "doku-TAIPU" (どくタイプ) so they got it right in this case. On the other hand, the Fire type in Japanese translates as Flame type in English as it uses the word "honō" (炎) instead of "hi" (火). The Flying type in Japanese is "hikou-TAIPU" (ひこうタイプ) which literally uses their word for flying (飛行).
I always looked at darks being immune to psychic type attacks as the fact that dark, in the sense of fighting dirty, being tricksters, are unpredictable pokemon whose moves can’t be foreseen, even for a mind reading psychic type. Psychics can’t fully read their minds as to stay in that state would drain them of their energy as they get no where. The dark Pokémon’s mind is cloudy, murky, unpredictable.
If the Dark-Type pulling from nothingness and evil thoughts is the official explanation for its existence, then Miracle Eye must be the user concentrating the positive cosmic energies of the universe onto the progenitor of the nothing. You gain heightened awareness, clarity of mind enough to resist any form of negativity long enough to gaze into the void and have the void blink.
"The fear of the unknown" Know i have my own pokémon head canon The fear of the unown when beings in the pokémon universe have a near death experience they see that view of all those unown circkling reality and just loose it
I mean, Akuma (the Street Fighter character) isn't necessarily evil; he's just trying to quench his thirst for marital arts combat n' stuff. He doesn't actually want to kill everyone around him or conquer the world, just win or die against Ryu's Satsui no Hadou.
heck, in the OG japanese he isn't even called Akuma for start. His name is Gouki and his western name sounds like a western trying to apply their morals to a japanese character
You and me remember Akuma very differently lol. Akuma is pretty evil, his main art style and code of conduct is about murder and bloodlust, and the killing instinct. However, he has a strict code of conduct not to bother killing or fighting the weak, so he doesn’t murder for the hell of it; doesn’t change the fact that he’s a psycho murderer who attacked his brother and murdered his instructor.
@@KrSaPoww actually, they wanted him to be called Akuma but he cant have that name it Japan. Its like a bad omen (its also banned as a name for real Japanese people). And Gouki literally translates to grand/super demon. So its still pretty fitting of the character.
I like the dark type, I mean still not one of my favorites, but it's easily the most well thought out type, with all the angles that go into it. You got Pokemon like Spiritomb that harness dark energy for evil, Absol that uses it to warn people, Incineroar and Pangoro aren't evil they just play dirty, Umbreon hunts at night. Then Yveltal and Darkrai embody and are all the angles in 1 being.
Dark is a very abstract type. You nailed fairly well Lockstin. Dark/Negative energy, Dark matter, Underhanded tactics, Bad Karma/Juju, etc., Fairy and psychic types do the same. I wish there was a true light type though. Shake up the balance a bit.
I'm of the opinion that every program that exists needs a dark mode because when I'm working on a document I can't be staring at a blinding white screen all day.
I've always seen the dark type as the anti-hero type. Venom, Spawn etc. That's why it's my favorite type. We're jerks but we do the right thing when it really matters.

Psychic types be pursuing knowledge and enlightenment, but when they stare into the abyss, the abyss stares back OwO Like the madness of gazing into the unknowable
My favorite explanation for Dark types Psychic immunity is that the darkness in their mind is difficult for Psychic types to comprehend, it is twisted beyond what is "normal". That would also offer an explanation as to why the move Miracle Eye allows them to hit Dark types. It opens up another inner eye, one that allows the miracle of interacting with what the Psychic type doesnt understand.
I honestly don’t think dark Pokémon are evil at all. It’s more like the type for the easily misunderstood or for users of more sly actions/users of dark magic. Eirika from fire emblem puts it best: "Dark magic is generally not well regarded... but at a basic level, it is not innately evil." This I cemented by the facts that dark Pokémon are only used by evil teams when it can be assumed that these Pokémon were stolen due to their access to moves like thief, making it easier for the Pokémon to do their bidding. Also the fact that the main concept Pokémon art designers first motto when making a Pokémon is to make it look like it can be your friend. There are arguably more notable non dark type, evil Pokémon then there are actual dark type, evil Pokémon. (Looking at you ghost types)
yeah I assumed they started with "Evil/Dishonorable" Dark in mind but as the franchise continued softening they became more about the Nocturnal/Lightless aspect of Dark, which is why early Dark Moves are all about disrupting or attacking & disorienting while newer ones are about the Night and Dark Matter as for Espeon & Umbreon, I would say Espeon absorbs the Conscious energy while Umbreon absorbs Dreams
Despite being Western/American, I've always felt like the idea of exploring how everyone has the potential to be good and bad is not only more true to life and relatable, but just better for telling stories intended for older audiences too. Being purely good or purely evil, is more suited to fairytales and little kids
So I've been working on and off about translating stuff in Pokémon to Esperanto, and for the Dark type, I went with a word meaning "hidden", that's also used in things related to thieves, which I again think fits. Glad to get some more justification on this. (The time someone tried translating fire red to Esperanto they used... A word that only means the absence of light)
No, you already also went over what dark type _is_ in other vids, too. I distinctly remember you defining it more as having "foul tactics" meaning, as well as criminal or mischevious, as opposed to having dark void powers. Don't you mandela affect me.
I know it's only about one frame, and most people probably didn't notice it, but I gotta say mad props to the editor right at the end of the video for that cut to black. (for those who don't normally watch to the very end of the video, recently there's been a small message to do with the video alongside an animation of tofrug being hecking adorable. In every other video so far, the final frame has been just a funny smear frame in the animation along with text and background, but in this video (for which the text was "time to black-out") the final frame was all black apart from the text. It's really subtle, but I appreciate it)
I see dark type as the Dark Side of the force, the extreme emotions that you can't control. It makes you abandon rules or logics, you're not above anything as you're consumed by the burning emotions. Ghost types are souls of the dead people, and the ghosts in real life, represents regrets of the ones who left behind, but also, the social norm to be respectful and afraid of the death. Dark types, has just completely abandoned such norms, and they are not afraid of death, because they are already too focused on other emotions to feel such thing. They don't care. Fairy types are represented as power of nature, a feminine force, but also they represent the peace of mind, affection, and mellowness of emotions. They usually have power to calm down others, which is basically the whole purpose of Dark types. Dark types wants to be angry, mad, and mean, but Fairy types just don't let them have it. For Dark type's immunity to Psychic type attacks, is that Psychic powers are ability of shaping matters and other individual's mind. Which is negated by the extreme emotion of Dark types. Taking the usual association that each type have with different works of life, the Psychic types are usually associated with Mediums, Priests, and spiritual teachers, while the Dark type is associated with delinquents and criminals. Dark type represents rebels who deny the social norms, and rules, and the Psychic type represents that social order, which gains from people's respect, which Dark types doesn't have. One thing to note is that Mediums are not only associated with Psychic types, but with Ghost types too. On the other hand, Fighting types has actual physical force, that can knock some sense into Dark types, unlike Psychic types or Ghost types who's all just mind games (or is it?). For the weakness to the Bug type, it's about bugging people who's extremely susceptible to anger and frustration (Dark type), or who needs perfect calm of mind (Psychic type).
I think you should make a video about all of the pokemon controversies it had over the years, it could be very interesting (Also spooky month is around the corner)
On the whole Dark being weak to Fairy, I like to think it’s because all dark types are cynical, they are filled with uneasiness and with them battling against Giant Plants and Menacing Water Monsters and then suddenly fighting a creature of pure light in the form of a cute entity, they probably don’t trust it and are thus able to be attacked or they go easy on it, because they are afraid the fairy type will show it’s true colors
The theme with the anti-light fits perfectly with the German name of the Dark type: Unlicht. It means literally "not or anti light". Every German kid back in the day was wondering, so what is the light type then... psychic? Glad they kind of fixed it with fairy type, even though they named it just fairy / fee.
my interpretation of the dark type is that it's heavily tied to emotions and the manipulation of them. some signature dark moves are feint attack, throwing the opponents guard off to land a dirty hit, or moves like taunt or torment. this also covers at least most of their type interactions. fighting types are resistant because their discipline allows them to not lose focus as easily and are super effective because without their mind games, a dark type cant match them in a straight, fair fight. conversely, they are super effective vs and immune to psychic types because the psychic type is all about the mind, so their ability to mess with emotions breaks the psychic type's concentration making them unable to effectively harness their powers and fight back

Sand Attack should be a dark type move, it's a pretty dirty tactic to put sand in someone's eyes, and also it can hit flying types, something other ground moves can't
Sorry, my pidgy is flying 1m off the ground and is now immune to that kicked sand up in the air.
Though, at least it make sense to have reduced accuracy when it's used on Flying types, sand can be blown away

Aku Maguire: I’m gonna put some dirt in your eye
That explains why Spider-Man's Dark Forme is known for the infamous threat "I'm gonna put dirt in your eye."
EDIT: Dang, the lad above me beat me to it.
@@canaisyoung3601 Headbutts are legal in at least one major fighting style in competition (Lethwei).

I agree with this.
But then wouldn’t that make it the exact same as the Fairy type?
@Zwoolk This sounds more realistic then the thought of @Goofy Goober.

You can still fool a genius with sleight of hand, or better yet, a swift, sudden strike at an unsuspecting individual. A lot of dark types have more to do with being sneaky than purely evil.
God that ad was top tier, gotta love a powerthirst reference.
It's so good.
1:13 you snuck her in you absolute based editor, props to you

Perhaps a reason Dark is strong against ghost could be how the darkness greatly disturb spiritual purity. Ghosts are fickle and very emotionaly influenciable, so dark elements will cause a lot of harm to those emotionaly fragile.
Also the dark creatures' mischievous games can make the undeads cannot RIP (rest in peace).
You missed out on why Miracle Eye allows Psychics to hit Dark types.
Up
I suppose it allows Psychic-types to peer past the generally negative energy the Dark-types output, which I guess is such an overwhelming feat for them that it's labeled a "miracle".
This makes no sense to me. Are you saying that Psychic Types represent society? If your theory was correct then it'd be Normal instead of Psychic.
@@zeusdemi6858
I'm well aware. Although, Punisher tends to feel remorse for a lot of things... particularly his failures.

*Dark types being weak against Fairy types due to the latter's innocence*
Tapu Lele and Hatterene: *laughing in psychological torment*
Morgrem: I am CONFUSION
Lockstin & Gnoggin is like an English literature teacher trying to make sense of someone's work even if they didn't mean anything with it
For a long time, I've thought of the Dark type as the "sneaky" type, not the evil type.
Ah yes, language being a headache once again. Also that sponsor spot was kinda awesome
In German it's called the "no light" type (Unlicht).
At least this is how I see it
Lockstin at the end: "Preferably while setting your UA-cam interface to dark mode."
Me: I've must've been playing 4D chess, because mine's been in dark mode for YEARS!!!
I'm happy that Maxill is coming back more.
Me too. It's nice seeing Maxill more
I agree with you,I like maxill.
I agree
at 1:00, the japanese on screen just says aku taipu not akuma taipu
Bulbapedia is also saying that the type's name is aku taipu.

Yeah! For some reason I keep thinking poison counters fighting type from a comment in one of these videos, though it's not true.
XD
Thank you so very much for the Powerthirst-esque add. I had forgotten about it and now I will have to re-watch the vids...
For Dark's immunity to Psychic, I've always thought of it in two ways:
1) If we're talking on the "fear" bit, then you can train your mind to not be afraid of bugs or being hit anymore.
Flying and poison are simply named wrong, but now is too late to change. dodrio doesnt even fly...
@@njfernandes87 I think it has to do with Poison being the closest word to the riginal Japanese. And I*m pretty sure Japanese only have one word for both Poison and Venom, as other languages do, and so the dubbing team just went with Poison.
Wind and Corrosion types, yeah.
And electric type can mean literal light, while grass and psychic look for either meaning each.
Gotta love how when you brought up the Merriam-Webster definitions you featured Darkdork himself 🤣

Really great video! Also, I love the little feet dangle at 1:44 Such a nice detail.

Dark type vs fighting is like a samurai slicing a bullet that was shot by a criminal
Then there are the street punks like Scraggy, Galarian Zigzagoon and their evolutions.
Dark is a very abstract type. You nailed fairly well Lockstin.
Dark/Negative energy, Dark matter, Underhanded tactics, Bad Karma/Juju, etc.,
Fairy and psychic types do the same. I wish there was a true light type though. Shake up the balance a bit.
I always interpretted fighting types being strong against dark types as a reflection of the trope of jocks bullying goth/emo kids

Psychic types literally have to reach enlightenment just to scratch dark types. For some reason that's hilarious to me.
I honestly don’t think dark Pokémon are evil at all. It’s more like the type for the easily misunderstood or for users of more sly actions/users of dark magic.
Eirika from fire emblem puts it best:
"Dark magic is generally not well regarded... but at a basic level, it is not innately evil."
This I cemented by the facts that dark Pokémon are only used by evil teams when it can be assumed that these Pokémon were stolen due to their access to moves like thief, making it easier for the Pokémon to do their bidding. Also the fact that the main concept Pokémon art designers first motto when making a Pokémon is to make it look like it can be your friend. There are arguably more notable non dark type, evil Pokémon then there are actual dark type, evil Pokémon. (Looking at you ghost types)
yeah I assumed they started with "Evil/Dishonorable" Dark in mind but as the franchise continued softening they became more about the Nocturnal/Lightless aspect of Dark, which is why early Dark Moves are all about disrupting or attacking & disorienting while newer ones are about the Night and Dark Matter
as for Espeon & Umbreon, I would say Espeon absorbs the Conscious energy while Umbreon absorbs Dreams
I feel like Baddie Bad from Pokemon Let’s Go Eevee should’ve been called Debauchery or Vile Villainy.
No thats to clever

1:21 I appreciated the reference to good morning form hell
I'm kinda surprised that the dark type doesn't have more to do with the power of night and elemental darkness, to be honest
Yeah... currently it feels a bit like "being mean is an element"
My favorite part was that milk before cereal was evil.
Dark for me has always been more mean than evil. And a little bit of the night time vibe.
What's the difference? Evil is just advanced meanness.
The full Analysis of Pokémon as a whole thing is so brilliant. Definitely One of my favorite Pokémon channels
But then there's Absol, though I guess we can say they are creatures who are sensitive to disturbance of the world.
I think you should make a video about all of the pokemon controversies it had over the years, it could be very interesting
(Also spooky month is around the corner)
Glad your mascot is getting more time.
Anyone else notice that when he said bad acts an image of cereal being poured after the milk was on the screen?
I just wanted to say that I appreciated the powerthirst reference for the manscaped bit
Your videos are amazing, and honestly gives me so many headcannons for how Pokemon In different routes and situations will react to one another
16:44 ah yes, the most evil thing someone can do, put the milk before the cereal
The theme with the anti-light fits perfectly with the German name of the Dark type: Unlicht. It means literally "not or anti light". Every German kid back in the day was wondering, so what is the light type then... psychic? Glad they kind of fixed it with fairy type, even though they named it just fairy / fee.
my interpretation of the dark type is that it's heavily tied to emotions and the manipulation of them. some signature dark moves are feint attack, throwing the opponents guard off to land a dirty hit, or moves like taunt or torment.
this also covers at least most of their type interactions. fighting types are resistant because their discipline allows them to not lose focus as easily and are super effective because without their mind games, a dark type cant match them in a straight, fair fight.
conversely, they are super effective vs and immune to psychic types because the psychic type is all about the mind, so their ability to mess with emotions breaks the psychic type's concentration making them unable to effectively harness their powers and fight back
12:30 Ah yes, the classic Psychic-type move: Gun.
