Those are great words, but unfortunately for so many people, you can't just tell them that they can or should change, they have to believe it. My wife has had a negative body image for at least as long as I've known her, 30 years. You can tell them until you are blue in the face but for some people, it has to be a fundamental change from within themselves. Maybe intense therapy can do it, maybe not.

Me too :( my 9 year old daughter just started experiencing these changes and she's so self conscious and hating her body and it devastates me so much because I know, that I myself, have had a huge influence on her by downing my postpartum body in front of her. I used to be 110lbs and a size 3 when bloated. I'm now closing in on 200lbs and a size 12, 3 kids later. So even at home she cant escape the constant stream of body image toxicity. So guess what? I decided it needed to start at home, the change in view. So, I explained to her that body's change even on a daily basis and her body is a powerful and beautiful machine that works hard daily so she can be and live a wonderful life.

Even stuff like: 'oh your body is so nice at this age', that is meant as a compliment reduces women and morality to their bodies.

I love Emma Thompson as an actress, but she seems to be a smart, emotionally intelligent, kind human too. Bravo Missy, BRA-VO! She made me tear up. As a 53 year old woman, it becomes more and more clear as I age that women are dealt an impossible hand and I am not going to accept that restriction society has put upon me any longer. Now, my braveness about living against that narrative evolves as I age, but ladies, here's the real truth. As you get older, you will look back at yourself at age 18, 28, 38 and so on and think: Man, I was really beautiful back then. And then you realize your 73 year old self would be telling you at 53, "Flaunt what you got, because it's good and it doesn't get any better."

And then I asked a question 'why should we stop feeling or looking sexy as we get older ?'. Nobody replied. At first I felt that maybe I had asked a stupid question but I stand by it. Sexuality should be explored and lived no matter what age. There is no reason that it shouldn't except for the capitalistic ideas that only value youth and enforce that value so that we keep on buying things that are supposed to make us look and feel young. I hope that I'll still enjoy my body and sexuality the older I get even if things don't look the same as when I was younger. I hope that for all of us, especially women.

Could u play this interview for your patients with eating disorders? I think the message would be heard by some...even if they don't acknowledge it (teenagers seldom do in my experience). But, it doesn't mean that they didn't hear some bit of the message. As an obgyn doc, I've cared for lot of women, young & old, with eating disorders. Susan, my BFF from childhood, has struggled with anorexia her entire life.
You're so right that the self hatred is very sad to see. And, how that self hatred diminishes their ability to be their best selves or enjoy life.
Thank you for spending your career on the front lines caring for these women in need. It's not a job most of us could do. From where I sit, your type of treatment does help in small ways for some & in big ways for others. Keep on innovating in treatment and take a lot of vacations for yourself:) I loved Emma Thompson's perspectives, too.

I had an epiphany one day when I was in high school. It suddenly penetrated my self-absorbed mind that every single classmate of mine was walking around worrying about being judged. And not a single one was really noticing me. Even bullies aren't really thinking of their victims, and most people aren't bullies; they're just people wandering the halls trying to be "good enough."
*(I hasten to say that I haven't seen the movie and have no real-life opinion about what the scene looks like. I feel I don't have to, because I've had this conversation with myself, about what I look like to other people and how I affect them.)
What Emma has done in that mirror scene is give a gift of acceptance to all the other people with bodies. Because nobody really feels theirs is good enough. But Emma showed us ourselves, symbolically, and allowed us to see that there's really nothing wrong with a real person's real body. If her character is a stand-in for us, then hopefully the lesson is that our body is not freakish to other people. It's, at worst, no big deal. For most of us, it's perfectly acceptable or even more-ish. And that knowledge should inform our behavior toward ourselves. It's okay to not be ashamed of yourself. It's okay to feel cute. It's okay to be happy.

The scene where she stands in front of Leo, her character and she herself were so incredibly vulnerable - they all (cast and director) did an amazing job treating the entire movie with so much kindness, compassion and respect. Or wildly going off the rails to recapture their youth. This was an honest heartfelt search to find one’s self and to come into feminine power. It was a now or never choice. “Leo” was amazing in showing his two sides of his personality. I felt very encouraged by this movie. Thanks for the lovely interview.

I have a bit of a complicated relationship with my flesh-prison. I had an abnormal puberty which made my body fairly gender neutral, but also very fat. Throughout my teen years I felt like an old man in drag. When I got to college I stopped having the energy to stress about my body and stopped trying to feminize it. Now I have a roughly neutral relationship with my body- I'm not excited that I'm overweight, but it doesn't cause me a lot of distress.
What makes me self-conscious is other people. Always other people. I'd probably be okay with walking around the house nude if there were no windows. I know that other people will see my body as ugly. I know that other people will judge me.
My autism makes things different as far as I can tell. I see my body as a meat-puppet. I should probably take better care of it, but its condition doesn't say much about me as a person. But I've spent a couple decades masking my autism- I know that other people judge who I am as a person by the aesthetics of my meat-puppet and the way it moves through the world. And I get hurt when people come to the wrong conclusions about me based on my meat-puppet. So I dislike my body insofar as it portrays something about me that isn't true.
My obesity gives people the impression that I'm lazy and/or bad. My feminine mannerisms gives the impression that I'm a woman. My mildly feminine face gives the impression that I'm a woman.
But I'm a man. A trans man, but a man all the same. And the reason I want to alter my flesh-puppet with Testosterone is because I want people to make the correct assumptions about the person piloting this meat-puppet. I've been talking to more and more trans people; the way they experience their body is _way_ different than me. They see their body as inherently masculine or feminine based on shape and texture but I don't. It's really weird to hear them talk about how it feels to exist in their body rather than just being hurt by people's false interpretation of you.
It's weird to hear people talk about hating their body even when they're in private.

Your description of your body as a 'meat-puppet' reminds me of Dallas describing himself as a 'meat popsicle', in the fabulous movie "Fifth Element". My wife has had a negative body image for at least as long as I've known her, 30 years. My mother finally got a doctor to watch my efforts to walk, and it turned out I had been born with no hip sockets. No hip sockets to go with the thigh bone which is the other part of a ball-and-socket joint. At the age of 2 years, and 2 months, I was hospitalized. By first grade at 6 years, I had had all manner of treatments, and therapies that didn't work, plus 7 surgeries. Surgeries leave scars. Mine grew larger as I grew larger. I was skinny, had frizzy hair, had a limp, and scars. Those are reason enough to lead kids to: 1) Not offer friendship, 2) Unending teasing/laughter/bullying/mocking.
