    I am glad Ken's star is not shining brightly anymore. He was better at everything, acting, directing, choosing projects, etc., when he and Emma were together. They made really great movies. He was such a jerk, leaving her in the way he did. No class at all. His bright light dimmed, and he hasn't made an interesting movie in years, while her time in the spotlight was amazingly bright. One of the beautiful things about the Greg Wise story is that even though the prophecy came true, even with the prophecy he didn’t even consider Emma because he was 100% committed to honoring the boundaries of her marriage. It may have been a rough time in life, but it’s interesting to contrast the relationship between Kenneth and Helena and Greg and Emma. Kenneth and Helena just did whatever felt good in the moment with zero respect for boundaries or the other person involved. It may have felt good in the moment, but they obviously didn’t stay together, and honestly neither of them seems to have found anything of substance in terms of future relationships compared to what they lost. In contrast, Emma and Greg didn’t even remotely consider ANYTHING when they met, but they let fate play out and waited until it was appropriate and the previous relationship had run its course. It may have taken longer and may have meant facing more heartbreak in the short term, but they both found a relationship with substance in the end. Karma is real, even if it is rarely instant. Unless they mature a lot, I doubt either Kenneth or Helena will ever know the true joy and growth and sense of fulfillment and accomplishment and trust, etc., etc. that Emma and Greg get to know because they were willing to put in the work to build something infinitely more valuable and real. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not judging people who choose to have flings, etc., but there is a major difference in having a fling that is not agreed upon that destroys the happiness and trust of a third party who got no say in the matter and two genuinely single people have a mutually-agreed fling. And there’s also a major difference between say two 18-year-olds having a fling as they are discovering who they are and older adults that choose a life of perpetual flings because they prioritize ease and convenience over growth and effort that sometimes requires sacrifice and self-control to build something of substance. If Kenneth wants to have his fling with Helena, it may be immature and may not lead to much happiness, but if he ends his relationship with Emma first because he realizes they aren’t a good match because she is more mature and actually does want a monogamous relationship, and he’s not in that phase of his life yet, he gets a pass on 90% of it in my eyes. He still missed out on Gold to get a tiny piece of Fool’s Gold, but at least he is being honest and respectful about it. But yeah, I think the fact that he also wasn’t even willing to have the decency to end his serious relationship first before pursuing his own comfort and enjoyment is why he seems to be paying a bit of karma even to this day. Heck, if he had ended like a man, given time to heal he might even have salvaged some of the professional relationship with his ex-wife, which was clearly the strongest phase of his career.
    And yes, that is mostly me just rambling so I can better understand the situation. If anyone actually ever reads all of that I will be in complete shock.

    • @dod2304
      @dod2304 Місяць тому

      Well, I'm left thinking you must surely be very good friends with all of them, as there's no way else you could possibly know what happened between each couple or even Ken and Helena! Because, I certainly wouldn't 't presume to know what was going on, what they were thinking, or saying to other people at that time or as time went on! I also heard here that Kate Winslet suggested to Greg Wise he might want to spend some time with Emma (according to this and other reports I've read) One would think Emma and Kenneth had split by then , yes? It was 1995. Most women don't suggest a man pursue a friend who is married...do they? Maybe I'm naive 😜

    • @hollybigelow5337
      @hollybigelow5337 Місяць тому

      @@dod2304 I figured everyone knew the stories because it is a matter of public record, but yes, I did watch a short documentary where both Greg and Emma talked about this. Greg was so convinced the prophecy was true that he even tried to date Kate Winslet for awhile, but it just didn’t work out. He specifically said it never even occurred to him to consider Emma because she was married, and to him that meant she was completely off limits in that way. Several people at the time noticed they seemed to get along quite well, but they saw it as getting along as good friends to respected the boundaries of her marriage, nothing more. And yes, I know that because that is what they both EXPLICITLY SAID. It’s also what those in the cast also said. Sure, they could both be lying, and observers never know the whole story, but I for one tend to believe them partly because it is so in line with their behavior afterwards.
      With Kenneth and Helena, I would just say actions speak louder than words. So sure, in their particular cases I have very limited evidence about their opinions. I have heard Helena talk about her general attitude towards relationships and marriage, etc., and that attitude seems to perfectly mirror her behavior in this particular situation, but I haven’t heard her talk about this situation specifically. And I am definitely reading into both of their levels of happiness. I do know in principle that you can’t know the benefits of a long term relationship that requires work, respect, self-sacrifice, discipline, etc. without putting that effort in. I suppose it’s technically possible say Kenneth is now in the best relationship of his life and it is way better than Emma’s relationship with Greg, but I have actually heard Emma and Greg talk about their relationship, and they say incredible things, and their body language seems consistent with what they are saying. And although Kenneth may not talk as much about his relationships, in every interview I have seen when he was young and still with Emma he seems to have a vibrancy that completely disappeared after they split up. Sure, one could blame that on age or say there were other things going on in his life that made him lose that vibrancy, but when I watch later interviews, etc. with Emma her energy gets more vibrant, more confident, more mature, and seemingly more happy. Even just watching her interview after the Harvey Weinstein scandal was powerful for me. There was a woman who knew exactly who she was who wasn’t afraid to own her past mistakes and who also wasn’t afraid to speak the truth in spite of the danger of speaking the truth in a way that no one else was speaking it. Sure, that confidence and maturity and honesty may come from other areas of her life, too, but it is perfectly consistent with the attitude she has shown towards marriage as well.
      So no, I don’t know any of them personally. And yes, I am definitely reading a lot into certain situations. I have watched thousands, perhaps even hundreds of thousands of hours of footage of all of the people involved. I have been following Emma and Kenneth ever since Henry V, which is longer than many people online have even been alive. But just because I notice that Kenneth seems to have lost his sparkle and Emma has not doesn’t prove anything. To me this is not just a shot in the dark. I personally believe the principles which I said, so I’m adding the limited evidence I have into their individual lives to the principles that definitely have the power to explain what I seem to be seeing, but that certainly isn’t conclusive. I find it compelling enough that I still choose to believe it is highly likely, but you’re absolutely right that it isn’t conclusive at all. I will also say for some reason Helena doesn’t seem to have suffered as much from the experience. Although the way I perceive it is that the reason she didn’t lose her sparkle the way Kenneth lost his sparkle is because she didn’t have as much sparkle to lose in the first place. She has always come off as a darker, much more immature soul who at least is consistent in her brand of being darker, caring less, and having zero respect for social norms. I have never gotten the impression Helena cared one bit about what she did, but I also kind of get the impression she has no clue how much her actions hurt Emma. My feeling is she things she hurt her on maybe a 2 on a scale of 10, when she really hurt her at maybe a 9 out of 10, and this oblivious attitude is probably what inoculated her from feeling way worse about what she did. Yes, I am definitely reading a ton into her body language. She said some of this explicitly, but she didn’t say it all, and I personally believe probably 75% of it is outside of her own awareness, so she couldn’t explicitly say it because even she doesn’t know it if it is true. But it is all consistent with the principles I am seeing. Just as if I know someone abused drugs because they said so in an interview, and in a later interview they are shaking and slurring their words, etc., and then a couple years later they are perfectly still and speaking clearly, and between the interviews there are tabloid stories of that person going to rehab, I don’t know for sure that they were under the influence of some substance in the interview where they were slurring their words, but based on the body language and the known information that has been shared it’s not an outlandish assumption to make even if I don’t know them personally. If additional evidence comes out contradicting my conclusions, I am not so tied to them that I wouldn’t revise them in the face of new evidence, but based on the existing evidence I don’t think my conclusions are outlandish or come from nowhere. And it’s not based on 5 minutes of video. It’s based on many thousands of hours of material and following all of their careers for decades.

    Kenneth Branagh had had other couples, notably Alicia Silverstone. They were together in Love labor's lost (2000), directed also by him. It was a bit scandalous, because she was more than 15 years younger than him and again in one of his movies. While Thompson was alone for many years before she found her actual husband, and she couldn't have biological children at the end. These kind of guys are not trustable, they use a woman and when they should behave like a man, they just chicken out and find another woman. Either they finish alone or they settle later in life with a much younger woman, even if the woman doesn't share that much with them, only because they do not want to be alone, and they know they will be if they continue cheating. What he said was only an excuse, he could have worked less and be with Emma. Actually he continued working very hard the years after breaking with her, (and meeting other girls) so no, work didn't have anything to do with it. I like him a lot as an actor and director though, but he deceived me as a person then. Greg Wise however was 37 when he married Emma, and Emma was 44. There you have a real man!

    Love Emma. This split sounds so much like the Ralph Fiennes/Alex Kingston split. The cheating happened with a co-star and while the wife's biological clock was ticking. When a man doesn't want kids, and the woman does, it's never going to work. Branagh and Fiennes still have no kids. No excuse for cheating. But you can't force kids on someone who doesn't want them. Fiennes has been way more public about his desire to not have any children. That is probably why he pursued older women.

She spent years keeping things private and now all of a sudden she wants to trash her ex? In my experience there's plenty of blame to go around when a marriage dissolves and NO ONE is blameless.
