  • It is a fear that haunts the lives of too many Japanese women; a silent epidemic with consequences that can be fatal: Japan is suffering a wave of violent male stalkers.
And some victims are speaking out. Reports of stalking have increased ten-fold in the past decade, with more than 21,000 reported cases last year. But experts warn that this could be just the tip of the iceberg.
Rates of stalking are growing faster in Japan than in any other nation. When a stalker murdered a woman in 2011, Japan's anti-stalking law was toughened. But the killings continue.
'Hiro' began stalking his wife when she fled their home and his violent, controlling ways. He tells 101 East that he planned to kill his wife in divorce court because he believed it would be better for her to die than to be with another man.
Like Hiro, Japan's stalkers are often jilted lovers seeking revenge on former partners who they feel have wronged them or tried to leave them.
It is not easy to find victims and perpetrators willing to talk about stalking. But through support groups, we enter a world that remains hidden in the shadows of Japanese society, often at a shocking cost.
We speak to stalking victims who detail the terrifying experience of being continually threatened and harassed. We also hear from the brother of a woman who was killed by her stalker. He wants to draw attention to the dangers of stalking and says tougher laws are needed to protect women.
Therapists working with both victims and perpetrators say that much of the crisis is rooted in Japanese society. They say many Japanese men believe that they "own" women. They also claim that the police often fail to act to stop violent attacks.
Japan's leading criminal psychologist on stalking is calling for therapy to be made compulsory for any stalker with a criminal conviction.
101 East travels to Japan to explore the fear stalking numerous women across the country, and to hear from the men behind this insidious crime.

I'm a Japanese man and was stalked by a woman in Tokyo. Such a problem is not so taken seriously because by nature, women tend to be less violent. They usually don't end up killing their obsession. But if both men and women can be stalkers, what is the underlying problem?
Parents do not give enough affection when their children are small. They are not really affectionate people and I guess you can see that if you visit Japan. They never hug or even touch their children here. The worst of all, they never tell their children (or anyone actually) that they love them. Japanese children grow up doubting if their parents are really their parents, because they lack the affection they need or entitled to. I thought so, too. And when I asked around, it seemed that that is a universal doubt that all Japanese people have. It was shocking when this became a classroom discussion and every single student shared the same thoughts!
So when they finally are in a relationship, they tend to be extremely possessive. It doesn't mean that they'd be stalkers after they break up but they all seem to have problems. It's crazy to see your partner acting completely different in private across any culture. But I bet that that is even more different in Japan. Why? People are taught to not harm or disturb anything in nature and it's partially comes from Buddhist teaching. So in general, people act extremely polite in public in Japan. But that means they pretend to be someone else who is ideal to the society. They are really tired to act to be someone else (especially in modern society with all the pressures) so when they are with their partners, it's finally time to act like him or herself. In other societies, you can ask anybody what you need. But in Japan, they don't. In fact, they refuse to ask for a help or even express their feelings. Instead, they turn to their partners and ask them all their needs... But don't forget, he or she is the ONLY PERSON they ask the favor for! So when their needs or demands are not answered, they get really offensive. "You are mine and why can't you give me that?" That's what they ask. Why is this possible? It goes back to the problem of the parents not giving enough affection.
Here, people do not know or understand what love is. Parents don't teach them what love is. They don't even act like they love their children so what normally is "given" and "felt" during the childhood is not present there. So the children grow up without knowing love and end up being really "thirsty" for love. That is why they become too possessive and obsessive.
Just imagine children asking their parents to give them affection, and not receiving it properly. And when they are adult, they ask their partners the same but with the adult attitude and demands. It's worse than kids.
I guess any society has its problems but modern Japan is having numbers of major problems. That's what happens when a traditional society adapts foreign ideas, system or/and "modernize" itself too rapidly. That is not a real evolution of a society. I hope people talk more (that is the most difficult part here) and confront the problems as unified power.
I don't know if I explained the underlying problem here but perhaps you have a better idea why there are so many stalkers here.

There are several different factors that all combined are helping this disturbing trend to continue and increase, but by fighting for new laws, women's rights, changing the stigma of counseling and mental health, fighting for government backing on these issues, I believe that slowly things will begin to change. But the change must first begin with the people. In this case, it must begin with women, like the Miss International woman, and men who support them, like the man who lost his sister. They can make Japan change. It will take time, but it always starts with the people. In every country, in every culture.

I am the CEO of a private investigation firm in Japan.
Stalking is an issue that cuts both ways and is a frustrating issue for those of us in the PI industry. These stalkers are likely to hire us without telling their true intentions. We also struggle to determine if the customer is a stalker because the identity of repeating stalkers are always protected in Japan. The obsessive human rights protection policy in Japan may be the source of a problem in this matter. Additionally, many stalker victims are young females who are not rich enough to hire PIs. So they can’t get the protection they need.
When it comes to parental child abduction matters, Japanese mothers often make fake Domestic Violence accusations against the fathers to simply justify themselves and separate their children from the father. In such cases, females take advantage of the social issues on their benefit.
In short, stalker issues are complicated, a hazard to the Private Investigations industry in Japan.

    • @aydinx1052
      @aydinx1052 8 років тому +164

I'm sure your question was rhetorical, but I think it's because women have been considered the property of men since the dawn of civilization. First a girl is the property of her father, then he marries her off and she becomes the property of her husband, and in old age she becomes the property of her son. It wasn't until the late 19th century that this view started to change. We're trying to undo over 5000 years of a tradition in a few generations. The ideology is harder to break in heavily male dominated societies in the east, not just Japan. I hope we can see a change in our lifetime.

Depending on where you live though, it might be hard to find a man who doesn't see you property, so I wouldn't blame you if you were in that situation. I'm glad to help!

i wouldn't say it doesn't matter, cause it does, and so does defending yourself... both matter to bring down the amount/percentage of people who feel entitled to some one else and can't be cordial after rejection... of course there will still be a few but if the gov and police are on board to actually punish ppl doing it and schools enforced that the behaviour is bad and will get you a record and jail time i think more would opt not to do it. while knowing/ seeing behaviours will help you report it like some of the stories the police didn't help after the men were reported. after that what else is there to do?

I have never been stalked, but I used to receive obscene phone calls from strange men who got their jollies that way. I found the perfect solution: silence. Don''t speak, don't threaten, don''t cry, don''t blow a whistle into the phhone, don't hang up. Just sit there and wait. It's so funny to hear them run down into uncertainty, then "hello? hello" and finally hang up. The same man never called again. That method works for unwanted commercial solicitors too. They get tired hearing themselves talk and hang up.

    3) the identity or feelings of the Stalker are always protected.
    SMH 🙄

    • @SearchOddiN

      1) Having no laws against or ways to prevent stalking or any crime, doesnt mean that the police or the system its useless. (In Japan I think its illegal to have a taser or mace with you.)
      3) The identity of a perpetrator is protected because people might look into the family, relatives or friends of that person and retaliate in a vigilante manner. Also, to protect people with the same name, in asian countries is quite normal.
Your 2nd point, I just dont get it. "Believe", is such a strong word when it comes to judge a situation that could change a party's life. Just to put an example, insurance fraud is a pretty common thing in asia. According to your point, every person that claims that they are the victim of an accident or they demand benefits because they were negatively affected by something at work or while being in a hospital; ALL these claims/victims should be 'rewarded' with justice, money or the accused get years of jail for something they didnt do? He would stare at me during class through a reflection in the ceiling, show up to my fathers work and ask for me, and take part in many other stalker-like behaviour. When I asked my teachers for help, they just made light of the situation.
I had not heard or thought about him in over 7years, until two week ago; when he tried to add me on Facebook.

Most women detest being cheated on, too. It's about dishonesty, not ownership. I sure wouldn't like it if my boyfriend slept with another woman but I sure don't feel a sense of ownership over him. So no, you don't 'need' a sense of ownership over another human being in order to appreciate and value the covenant of a monogamous relationship. If what you say is true and there are loads of men out there like that, then what women need is a much better set of lessons in how to avoid these men like the plague. Because you cannot simultaneously love someone and feel ownership over them.

Usually they try to get my attention but I mostly ignored them or told them I'm busy. I show them no fears and just mostly ignored them. No emotions, no aggression. Just straight out ignored them until they are bored. I walked pass them, and go on with my daily life and they get bored and the move on.
What I notice stalker harass you if you are angry or scared. They feed off of your emotion and fears. They want your attention they want to control you in someway. If you go into hiding and get scared they control you.
Even a couple of time some stranger was stalking me in a store I circled around just to make sure if he was following me. He was so I turned around and stare him straight into his eyes and and ran away.

This is so incredibly sad. It's depressing to see women so vulnerable and oppressed as second-class objects, when they are just as capable and respectable as any person. Hopefully Japan will succeed in providing more security and peace of mind for these women and girls, and teach boys that females are not possessions! One can see the trauma and sadness this mentality brings.

Little Talks This documentary is a bit misleading. I live in Tokyo and Japan overall is very safe for women. At night I see women and even school girls cycling around on their own. Japan is a very safe country for women, especially in comparison to western nations. They do have other gender issues - it is still a male chauvinistic society. Japanese men generally prefer submissive women. It is one reason why white men are very popular with Japanese women - we are from places where confident women (and female empowerment) is far more prevalent.

Those unresolved stalking cases are indeed horrible... I was stalked by 2 men strangers in the past when I was in middle school, but it was for a short time. (I don't live in Japan, but everyone knows that there are people in other countries who have/had that problem)... I'm not being stalked right now, luckily. But I still hope to never get that experience again... ^^'

People have always thought that. Think of the traditional Western marriage ceremony. First the man approaches the FATHER of his intended and asks "for her hand in marriage". Then if he agrees, he walks her down the aisle and gives her over to her new husband.

I experienced stalking on a small and temporary scale but it was terrifying. He stayed in the same block. We met while waiting for the lift and he offered to carry my box, i let him carry it thinking maybe he just being nice. Then he put it on the floor in the lift. Im like wuuut?? I had to pick it up again. Later he found my number and sent me a picture of my car and himself to me over the course of a few days. I literally ran back to my unit after reaching home because i was scared id see him again. Luckily i was friends with the head guard of the condo and told him about it. He knew the guy and threatened him that he will call the police if he doesnt stop. Later on the stalker moved out of the condo.

Thats just awful. You should never have to fear something like this. This is evil. You should be treated with respect and dignity. The same way Christ teaches us to treat our wife. Many people misunderstand biblical teaching but fact is the husband is to lay his life down for his wife. He is to love her the same way Jesus Christ loved His church and sacrificed His life for her. I am very happy to see you are no longer living in fear. God bless you from America.

The sad part about this video is that it is in English for English viewers. This should be shown in Japanese and for the Japanese public to gain information and knowledge that is affecting the women of their country. I feel as if I am learning more information about Japan's problems than those who are citizens from how this video describes the public's general knowledge.

So many people don't understand stalking and abusive men. I suggest reading the book "Why does he do that?" by Lundy Bancroft to better understand these issues. He's attempted to treat over 2000 abusive men who ranged from verbal abuse to stalking and murder. These men are not mentally ill or crazy. They feel they are entitled to anything they want and will use any abuse technique to keep it. To treat them as crazy or out of control is to dismiss the problem as unsolvable.

How strange that a country with used school girl panty vending machines, violent sexual rape animes shown own non-cable tv stations during daytime hours, and laws that allow for groping in public places would have problems with woman being victimized in any way.

In many asian countries, having a huge billboard of Victoria Secret models in lingerie in a busy metropolitan is never acceptable, but in the US, that is completely normal. School girl panties in vending machines may be strange to Americans, but not to certain Asian countries. Neither one is right nor wrong nor better or worse, but you just have to understand that each country have its own culture and understanding of what is tolerated or acceptable and not.

Japan has bad mental health hospital system. In my opinion a lot of mentally sick people don't get help they need. Japanese society is hard to live in, you have a lot of expectations on you that you have to fullfil (it is bigger pressure than I felt in Europe) and some people can't keep up. People become shut-ins (failed school, job), stalkers (failed relationship, etc) and they are left like that. I agree with the doctor in the video, they need therapy (if they commited a crime then jail AND therapy).

Then all of those people should buy up some land and start their own society of lower exceptions for average people that just want to live regular lives in peace..
Mandatory only m-f work weeks... no weekend work allowed...
Weekends are for family time and fun..
After others see them working jobs and having a equal balance of downtime and fun with family and friends on the weekends..
Owning houses just like them... they will get pist...
Come people dont let the stress turn you into cra cra stalkers...
Just work together and create your own community...
