I feared that I would choke on my own vomit like the rock and roll stars do..they usually died.. well I had trouble breathing too.. I called 911 and ambulance came to take me to the hospital.. I quit drinking after that.. I have had an occasional beer but never more than one..

14 years ago, my friends kept asking me to go out for drinking session, I rejected 14 years later, at the age 35, 6 of them diagnosed with Serious liver cirrhosis, 2 of them dead due to drink-driving. As for me, I'm still in good shape and pink of health. It is worth it.

I have a very close friend who has to get all the acid out from his digestive system because of too much alcohol. He attended my birthday even though he had just recovered. I served alcohol that night but i didnt allow him to drink then he bought out his glass tube loaded with grinded kush...then he let me take a hit...it was good. I didn't touch my alcohol all through out the night.. and yeah i was normal when i woke up the next day.. i love drinking but cannabis is much controllable if you dont overdo it. But on the other hand...everything in excess is bad.
Its sad because alot of the illnesses and disabilities in korea can be *LITERALLY* cured and repressed with cbd oil. Alcohol and prescription drugs are way worse than marijuana.
Weed ain't my thing but I totally get why it's better for most people than alcohol. My physical health is much better than most people for my age, so I have no problem with alcohol, but I got a mental health condition that's already bad enough and weed makes it more painful, so I abstain. But most people don't have it that bad so I totally support cannabis users who use it smart, for recreation and medicinal purposes.

I spent two years in Korea at Camp Casey it was one of my best assignments in my military career. Saw many soldier lose their career getting drunk on soju. One thing I’ll always remember is how friendly the Korean people were and how extremely hard working they were.
I tried alcohol for the first time when i was 14, and i hated it. I've never drink again, that was my first and only time. I honestly can't understand why people need it to have fun, get over stress or sadness and make memories. Britain is not bad as American for police at all but I was still shocked to see the way which they handle most situations and how many police have no shame in aggression , intimidation and posses a strong sense of entitlement. Korean police deserve some real credit for treating their citizens with respect. I live in America (New York City to be exact), and people who kick or threaten to kill the police will not be treated with such leniency.

Yeah, but unfortunately that's how it's like in big cities, especially in asia. Surprisingly, a lot of the Koreans I know aren't big drinkers, so it's probably not as prevalent as it seems.
When I was in China, I got into the Korean international community. I loved how they were both playful but intensely serious about their education, work, and self-improvement. But I got the sense that alcohol played a significant role in their life. My favorite story was of an office building in Seoul where every morning at least one worker was so hungover that they would puke in front of a tree. The tree was dead within a year.
I'm so glad we moved to the states. I can't imagine being forced to drink to get ahead in the workplace. Before I got married, my dad and his friends got my husband really drunk to see if he would turn into a happy drunk or angry drunk. Besides alcohol, South Korea is also among the highest in suicide rate. The solution to this alcohol problem is going back to God, the ultimate source of happiness. You don't need substances to keep you happy.
Have met and worked with many Koreans over the years and shared BBQ with them, it’s quite horrifying how much they consume in a short period of time. It seems clear that none of them are living the life they want otherwise they wouldn’t be turning into alcoholics.
It's even worse when you realize that Asians are the least likely group to be genetically predisposed to addiction (3-5% from the study I saw) so for South Korea to have a million and a half addicts basically means almost the entire population is drinking all the time
From what I have heard from my Korean friends, it seems as if the emphasis on seniority pressures employees into going to bars and drinking (even if they wouldn't have otherwise done so). I really hope that the South Korean government puts out educational initiatives on the dangers of drinking copious amounts of alcohol.
The problem in Korea is very clear to me. Alcohol is cheap, and is literally the only way to escape reality for Koreans. Having a gram of marijuana is punishable with prison time, and even showing positive for marijuana on a drug test can land you in prison. If they make alcohol illegal, people will find another, even more dangerous way to get high. Prohibition never works, because the common man wants to escape from the stress of adult life at times, and there is nothing wrong with that. One should be in control of what goes into their body, not their government. I applaud those who remain sober in their lives, but those who choose to indulge should not be discriminated against for their choices. There must be a reform in Korea to give more choices to their people when it comes to personal leisure. Unfortunately, I doubt that this will happen in my lifetime.

It's a bit different. Koreans drink a LOT more, but Russians drink harder alcohol. Soju's typically only around 10-15%, so i dunno, i'd say it's pretty close between Koreans and Russians.

South Korea has a long history of police brutality during a period of military dictatorship from the 60s to the 80s, so when democracy was restored the power of the police was greatly reduced. Most police officers don't carry around guns or any weapons. Even the riot police are not allowed to use anything that can harm civilians, like tear gas or batons, so they are usually equipped only with body armor and plastic shields. Even the slightest police brutality would be all over the news instantly, which is the reason police officers refrain from confronting drunk people.
Trust me, you don't want that. I lived in Seoul for 6 years and the police are so powerless that they are like a local charter of a suburban neighborhood watch. You can't have that in a country like the U.S. where guns are so easily obtainable.

Yeah alcoholism is bad, but I think the bond you can feel with other people in those drinking parties are very strong. I've never quite understood American drinking parties, where people stand around and don't really talk to an individual for more than 5 minutes. As an introvert, I've always liked Asian drinking parties more, where you sit down as a group, eat, drink, sing karaoke badly, and make everyone feel included.

Ive been to Korea for work and yes they do love to drink but they are the most friendly respectful people i have ever met and drinking and socializing is a huge part of there lives. Fantastic place, wish i could live there.

Glad I'm not stuck in such a society, and free to avoid the alcohol cult. Take up a solid gym routine, hiking, yoga, or similar activities. You'll feel great and fulfilled at the end of the day.
That's healthy and I'm sure people who binge drink on the weekends can do the same but none of the things you mentioned is a social activity. Taking classes, going to art shows/concerts, joining social sports leagues etc is more social and give you the opportunity to meet more people

I lived and worked as an English teacher in South Korea for three years. Most foreign teachers start having alcohol problems within months. It was also nothing to see soju sold right next to candy bars at food shops that cater to schoolchildren.

I have a very close friend who has to get all the acid out from his digestive system because of too much alcohol. He attended my birthday even though he had just recovered. I served alcohol that night but i didnt allow him to drink then he bought out his glass tube loaded with grinded kush...then he let me take a hit...it was good. I didn't touch my alcohol all through out the night.. and yeah i was normal when i woke up the next day.. i love drinking but cannabis is much controllable if you dont overdo it. But on the other hand...everything in excess is bad.
Its sad because alot of the illnesses and disabilities in korea can be *LITERALLY* cured and repressed with cbd oil. Alcohol and prescription drugs are way worse than marijuana.
Weed ain't my thing but I totally get why it's better for most people than alcohol. My physical health is much better than most people for my age, so I have no problem with alcohol, but I got a mental health condition that's already bad enough and weed makes it more painful, so I abstain. But most people don't have it that bad so I totally support cannabis users who use it smart, for recreation and medicinal purposes.

I tried alcohol for the first time when i was 14, and i hated it. I've never drink again, that was my first and only time. I honestly can't understand why people need it to have fun, get over stress or sadness and make memories. I've been around drunk people before and the vomit, the passing out, the second-hand embarrassment and the stench are horrible.

Britain is not bad as American for police at all but I was still shocked to see the way which they handle most situations and how many police have no shame in aggression , intimidation and posses a strong sense of entitlement. I have never personally seen a police in Korea be violent of disrespectful of a person and I believe that displays Korean morales well

Only until 2am? Anyway, those that go to work earlier tend to go out earlier and go back home by midnight. But those who have evening or night shifts can stay out until 4 or 5am or later on weekends.

It's an anesthesia for a surgery. The bigger problem is some society doesn't allow any kind of anesthesia except religion. I agree that is a societal problem, but the bigger problem is some society force their people to think as if there has not been any problem.
and frankly, some of them are unhappy. :( there's a lot of household debt over there (I actually got to this video from one about household debt in SK) and that aside a lot of ppl have to settle for certain careers, romantic choices, etc to please their families.

When I was in China, I got into the Korean international community. I loved how they were both playful but intensely serious about their education, work, and self-improvement. But I got the sense that alcohol played a significant role in their life. My favorite story was of an office building in Seoul where every morning at least one worker was so hungover that they would puke in front of a tree. The tree was dead within a year.

Besides alcohol, South Korea is also among the highest in suicide rate. The solution to this alcohol problem is going back to God, the ultimate source of happiness. You don't need substances to keep you happy.
Have met and worked with many Koreans over the years and shared BBQ with them, it’s quite horrifying how much they consume in a short period of time. It seems clear that none of them are living the life they want otherwise they wouldn’t be turning into alcoholics.
It's even worse when you realize that Asians are the least likely group to be genetically predisposed to addiction (3-5% from the study I saw) so for South Korea to have a million and a half addicts basically means almost the entire population is drinking all the time

From what I have heard from my Korean friends, it seems as if the emphasis on seniority pressures employees into going to bars and drinking (even if they wouldn't have otherwise done so). I really hope that the South Korean government puts out educational initiatives on the dangers of drinking copious amounts of alcohol.

The problem in Korea is very clear to me. Alcohol is cheap, and is literally the only way to escape reality for Koreans. Having a gram of marijuana is punishable with prison time, and even showing positive for marijuana on a drug test can land you in prison. If they make alcohol illegal, people will find another, even more dangerous way to get high. Prohibition never works, because the common man wants to escape from the stress of adult life at times, and there is nothing wrong with that. One should be in control of what goes into their body, not their government. I applaud those who remain sober in their lives, but those who choose to indulge should not be discriminated against for their choices. There must be a reform in Korea to give more choices to their people when it comes to personal leisure. Unfortunately, I doubt that this will happen in my lifetime.

People in problems be it from work stress(very common in Korea) or other things,like sexual abuse or other terrible things,they try to escape it by drinking too much alcohol but most people do other things like eat too much ,especially women do this,they eat their stress away(mostly sugar) causing obesity and diabetes. And sugar is one of the biggest killers in the world and it's addictive too but because the koran doesn't ban it you don't talk about it. Most people who drink beer or wine are not alcoholics and this video just shows the extremes like most news does otherwise no one will watch.

It's a bit different. Koreans drink a LOT more, but Russians drink harder alcohol. Soju's typically only around 10-15%, so i dunno, i'd say it's pretty close between Koreans and Russians.

South Korea has a long history of police brutality during a period of military dictatorship from the 60s to the 80s, so when democracy was restored the power of the police was greatly reduced. Most police officers don't carry around guns or any weapons. Even the riot police are not allowed to use anything that can harm civilians, like tear gas or batons, so they are usually equipped only with body armor and plastic shields. Even the slightest police brutality would be all over the news instantly, which is the reason police officers refrain from confronting drunk people.

Trust me, you don't want that. I lived in Seoul for 6 years and the police are so powerless that they are like a local charter of a suburban neighborhood watch. You can't have that in a country like the U.S. where guns are so easily obtainable.

Mike Berg Not everyone is that interested in their country's issues, especially such linked with the past. Some people just live their lives. I think it's very benefitial to br informed and to think crtically and constructively about such things, but I don't really think we can say people MUST do that. Good to be encouraged though.

I see people doing nothing but chugging their drink. They don't taste it, but rather get hits of flavor as it passes down their throat. Drinking fast does nothing but facilitate intoxication. I'd think a "savor your cocktail" campaign could help.

thegazette wich i also do haha, but drugs have different effects, and a happend to like the effect alcohol has, but i hate the taste. the are plenty other things that i can enjoy drinking, you don't have to enjoy the taste of alkohol to drink it.

Yeah alcoholism is bad, but I think the bond you can feel with other people in those drinking parties are very strong. I've never quite understood American drinking parties, where people stand around and don't really talk to an individual for more than 5 minutes. As an introvert, I've always liked Asian drinking parties more, where you sit down as a group, eat, drink, sing karaoke badly, and make everyone feel included.

I lived in Japan for three years studying and feel the same. In the same way, I also for example prefer bars/pubs to nightclubs. Prefer to actually talk to the people during the parties.

Ive been to Korea for work and yes they do love to drink but they are the most friendly respectful people i have ever met and drinking and socializing is a huge part of there lives. Fantastic place, wish i could live there.

They've been drinking like this since the 70s. What's more of a problem and getting better is the smoking issue.
Glad I'm not stuck in such a society, and free to avoid the alcohol cult. Take up a solid gym routine, hiking, yoga, or similar activities. You'll feel great and fulfilled at the end of the day.
That's healthy and I'm sure people who binge drink on the weekends can do the same but none of the things you mentioned is a social activity. Taking classes, going to art shows/concerts, joining social sports leagues etc is more social and give you the opportunity to meet more people
