    5'*5'*3* raised pond with 6 shubunkin, 1 weather loach and some medaka. Full of plants. Powered by a solar pump/battery through a bog filter.
    I've tried to keep the stocking low to mitigate the fact that water won't always be moving through the bog filter (although it does for at least a few hours a day as I force charge a separate 12v battery with my car battery charger).
    Water is crystal clear and fish seem happy .
    Enjoy your videos.

    Hi
    Can you recommend a uv clarifier. I bought a 36w Jebao in May this year and its faulty already. The electrics are tripping when I switch it on so think I need to get a better one. Your advice is always appreciated.

    • @ThePondAdvisor
      @ThePondAdvisor  4 роки тому +2

      We don’t use or recommend using UV clarifiering units as they effect the beneficial bacteria Mother Nature is proving to process the waste. These units are a must however for sterile fish pools with a bareliner.
      Not ever heard of a jebao must be a new company.

    Hi my pond is 1500 litres and has 74 adult goldfish. 30 plus baby goldfish. About 10 japanese koi and 5 English mirrors in. I have a huge amount of plants and a 30,000 litre kockney filter. As the large koi and mirrors out grow the pond I'll move them to a friend's larger pond but for now they are all under a foot in length and very happy.

    Hi there. I have a 1000ltr pond that is currently not stocked. I've had it running for 5 months, it has an internal sponge filter, and an external home made plant pot filter running from a pump. The plant pot has a large course sponge, 200 bio balls and a good amount of rock on top to keep it all weighed down and looking nice. It feeds back into the pond.
    How many goldfish would you think is a good amount for it? I was hoping to have 9 in total.

    • @ThePondAdvisor

    Hi Mark. We have an ecosystem pond with raised box filter in the rockery and waterfall. It was dug and designed by specialists. Its about 3ft deep and about 6 or 7 feet by 4 feet in water area. We have 2 koi that are obviously growing ! 2 tench and shubunkins and goldfish. Initialy we had about 12 fish. Weve plenty of plants, reeds etc....Weve had it 2 years and theyve bred both summers, so now weve about 15 fish and another 5 very small baby shubunkins from this year if they survive, is this gonna be too many fish ? The fish all seem happy and the pond is clean and gin clear.

    • @ThePondAdvisor
      @ThePondAdvisor  Рік тому +1

      Yes you too many, the pond is not really big enough for koi long term.

    • @ThePondAdvisor
      @ThePondAdvisor  Рік тому +1

      As your koi grow, they may require more space than the pond can offer.
      More fish mean more waste. Plus higher fish population will consume more oxygen. As the pond becomes overpopulated, there might not be enough oxygen to go around, especially during the warmer months.
      Overcrowding can also lead to health issues for fish, including the spread of diseases and parasites. It also can increase competition for food and resources.
      While your pond might be okay for now, you may face challenges in the future if the fish population continues to grow, especially with the koi.
      If you notice a decline in water quality, you might need to boost your filtration system.
      If you’re attached to your fish and have the resources, you might consider expanding your pond or adding a secondary pond.

    • @thefauxIDWATSON
      @thefauxIDWATSON Рік тому +1

      Thanks Mark. We are considering a secondary pond option for offspring currently and I fear my koi will have to move on eventually to another pond. I'd advertise ofcourse. 👍🏻

      I am not sure about the rating on the all in one pump, these types of filter are a lot of work. So I would not put many in, I guess it depends on how often you are going to clean the filter and what plants your going to grow. Lots of factors in a system that is potentially under filtered, I have bigger filters on much small cold water and tropical fish tanks

    I didn't hear here, or haven't seen in other pond channels: especially if you have smaller types of fish, I expect you then have to consider, 'when do I have too many fish and what do I do then?' I expect, if I were to get a handful or a dozen rice fish, or minnows, shouldn't I have to worry about them spawning and having fry? I can see if I had a koi or a feeder goldfish or three, there isn't a concern about them reproducing, but with smaller fish, I'm worried about possibly overfilling a pond (maybe in a couple/three seasons) if I have too many small fish in a small pond. Thoughts?

I used to keep discus about 16 in a 300ltr tank. All grew big and lived a good 5 years, I had 2 big externals going and internal and single filters running off air pumps, great filters for qt tanks etc always mature bio then. I do the same with thr pond. Over filtrate . My ponds not very big its 14 x 14 and 5 ft at thr deepest.

      Thank you, I like this topic as it’s a large rule of thumb, no hard and fast rules, great guide lines. And then we open up the door is this the stocking rate or the mature rate. Why don’t the fish breed and then you have more. It’s a great topic, we just need to understand if you keep lots of fish and feed them a lot you will have more work to do!
