I really like the appearance of the pond. I just wanted one that was deeper and bigger. Something all pond owners should do at their pond is what you show here. Place some stone or heavy gravel at the bottom so it does not look like a large black plastic bag that doesn't make your fish happy. Koi loves to foraging on the bottom and they can easily here. Fantastic!
You got it, bigger and deeper is much better for keeping bigger pond fish. They love this pond and it works as they have a place to hide. Less stress plus much better to keep clean.
This video is extremely helpful in understanding the application of non-woven geotextiles in building fish ponds. We respectfully request permission to distribute this video to fellow landscapers as an educational resource. Many thanks
In a word - fish. If you want fish you can't have a wildlife pond as the fish will eat every dragonfly nymph, midge pupa, damsel fly nymph, tadpole or baby newt which tries to grow in their pond. I used to keep fish but gave them to a neighbour's young son for his pond and now just keep mine for any wildlife which is drawn to the water. The birds love it too.
Made my first one in 1978. Sump pump and a gym sock....now many ponds later, It comes natural. I did what they proclaim new, years ago, with other ponds or rivers connected for natural filtration. Battled birds, nature and racoons and disease. My wife loves her Koi.
Hello Mark great vid as always and that build was just great the pond looks just fantastic over the years when the plants grow it's going to look just great hope they do plant around it
A lot of comments about pond being too small, they are right but they are forgetting a couple of important facts, you can only build a pond to what the customer wants and can afford. A proper koi pond costs a small fortune to build and running costs can be pretty steep as well.
You can build your own koi pond very cheaply or for a friend but when you are building for paying clients you can’t cut any anything out. I have fish holding systems that cost me £11 per 1000 UK gals per year. Using air to move the water up and around wetland filters.
I have probably watched this video more then 10 times to get ideas for when I build my pond next spring but I also can’t get enough of that song. Anybody know what it’s called? It’s very relaxing.
Love this video the natural pond looks great and its a good water feature on the yard. The fishes have good space. I was lookinh for a video on building earth pond cos i want to get someone to build one for me and thanks for video well presented and pond professionaly done.❤
I made a pond once {just Goldfish and Guppys (Millionsfish)} that I made just by digging a hole (6 inches to about 2 feet deep), and then lining it with that Black Gardening Plastic... lasted a couple of years! Always wanted something similar to this though! Problem is, I can't afford it! Oh, Well! lol Beautiful transformation here... you do great work! :-)
Thank you very much, we all start somewhere, I had six paper rounds to fund my addiction of ponds and water features when I was 11. I also tried filling a hole with a rubbish bin liner.
@@ThePondAdvisor LOL I think the main problem I had was I had no money for good filtration, so I was cleaning it out every other month... a lot of work! I'm just going to get my tank going again! :-)
@@ThePondAdvisor Maybe someday, I'll do a really nice, big pond with a big, beautiful waterfall! I got it in my head, what I want, but so many health problems bearing down on me... two years ago, I was told that I have a year or two left... maybe next life! :-)
It is not like a pro dude. You become a pro by researching more than one peice of evidence and applying the best in your evaluation. This pond has various weaknesses.
The Pond Advisor, you built a very nice & lovely pond. However, it would be even better if lights were added. Except, the owner don't care to see the pond at night.
i felt the same thing.. like they had created alot more rock and water running bed but the fish are all crammed into a space similar to what they had before.
@@ThePondAdvisor I have plans to make a pond and have an area of about 32 sq feet of cattails as a filter area before the falls. Love how natural your work looks. Nice to see someone that really puts his heart into his work!
The Pond Advisor An extra liner of that type must also provide more surface area for beneficials. It’s use is worthy of a comment from you since no one else seems to do that.
Thomas Krafft I try and reply to everyone, yes beneficial bacteria will grow on the surface of the fleece and on all the natural rocks and gravel. A lot of people do not use an overlay or rocks and gravel. Then wonder why the pool starts to leak in a couple of years or if a dog jumps in.
The Pond Advisor Sorry-I wasn’t asking for a reply to me directly. I meant that when you use the extra liner next time in a video to consider commenting in it. 😉
Nice video helped especially looking through all the comments I’m 13 and I built my own koi pond during the lockdown it’s 10ft by 6ft by 2 -3ft one of my biggest koi is about 44cm which shows you don’t need a really deep koi pond I’m in the south east of the UK
You will find a lot of people that will say 4’ is minimum, I recommend a minimum of 11 by 16 by 3 for koi. However short term or for old fish like in this video you can have them in smaller ponds.
@@ThePondAdvisor yes exactly my pond is 2 foot at one end and about 3 foot at the other not because i dug out like that but because my garden is sloped slightly
The bigger the fish the more oxygen it needs. The cold is not going to be a problem, the sheets will help a little, if your not heating the water the covering them does not really do that much. If people are heating a koi pool they will cover to reduce the water loss and heat loss. Having said that some people spend thousands on heating
great video. will be perfect if you talk a bit more about the products. I notice you put something below the liner then another layer of that same something on top of it. Also about the skimmer, and the waterfall brand and products. not sure we have those in Spain. info will be appreciated

Hi there, great build. I'm currently building a pond for my grandparents, and will be installing rocks. What is that foam glue you're using to secure the rocks in place. Thanks 😊
Good work! How do you clean the gravel/gunk that collects in the bottom of the pond? Do you ever put a sump at the bottom for easy pumping of gunk from a low point?
Rebel Quadron FPV yes we will drain and clean the pond every 3-5 years, but the wetland will be clean once a season. The gunk gets move around by the fish and high turn over. It’s more like a river system. The gunk settles out in the wetland and waterfall filter. The skimmer also removes a lot of the floating waste. It’s all in the design!
Rebel Quadron FPV you don’t have to take any stones out, you may have to move a couple, but that’s the beauty of wetland filters, you wash the filter with mature pond water! How to clean is coming up in future videos. But yes pumping out any gunk, dirty water, out from the pump vault or snorkel. You can use a sludge/waste pump or a good pond vacuum
As you have it, the gravel atop the aqua blocks is above or at the water level. Do think the functionality of the wetland filtration system would be reduced if it were submerged under a few inches of water?

Hi great stuffwhat plants do you recommend for a wetland filtration system
It's not all about the plants but understand your question. I like for the UK climate watercress, brooklime, and ever green equisetum.
If you are not in the UK try researching whatever bog plants are available: there is a surprising variety.
As you have it, the gravel atop the aqua blocks is above or at the water level. Do think the functionality of the wetland filtration system would be reduced if it were submerged under a few inches of water?
Not at all, you can install these up flow wetlands in the base of a swimming pool
Ah, perfect. Thanks again.
