I couldn't believe this was presented 9 years ago! A lot of what she said has come to pass. She is an awesome economist, whose consultation with African countries would be invaluable.
She is an articulate speaker who peppered her speech with a lot of factoids. Her recommendations are really quite obvious as she said so herself. Invest in education. Election based democracy has a myopic time horizon / short-termism and can't plan long term for structural problems. And protectionism as a weapon against the looming threat from the Orient. Who could argue against education? But the problem with the educational system in the United States and I would venture to say in .....
One big flaw in her suggestion that it might be good for USA (one of the western country) to become protectionist, is that if they ever do that, the US dollar will immediately be dropped as the global trading currency. And then all the debt they have accumulated over the decades will come back to haunt them to the point where they will not be able to trade with other countries without going into hyper-inflation.
Interesting talk. I think there is more insight with a deeper consideration capital, and a more nuanced understanding of what capital actually is - both from the side of the west and the emerging economies.
The same democratic principle that led to the good old days America - now its bad to get things done. This lady seem to represent both side of the argument. She puts forward a thesis of protectionism, debt default and what have you. She is no libertarian. I cannot place her - but she is indeed intelligent. He asks her to take it from the perspective of a "man from Mars" or "global citizen". Well, she IS a global citizen; she's NOT from the West and thus provides a valuable critique of the West vis-a-vis the East (China/India).
Not following the Arab's policy of slave castration was one failure. Another was accepting multiculturalism. Involving it's self in dumb wars. Helping support the radicalisation of Islam. Not spreading Liberty and freedom ideals enough. Caring about oil to much. Investing into the surveillance and slowly turning countries into police states. Buying into mass immigration. Letting the government get to big and thinking that making it bigger (raising tax's) will help.
Money is not the most efficient way to increase production and welfare. Instead people who are willing to contribute to society should be given real resources (food, homes, healthcare, education). Those who refuse to contribute are on their own. We will lose this game if we continue to play it this way. The numbers are against us. When the majority sink below poverty lines they will realize that working together is the only option. It's not a lack of resource it's a lack of willingness.
The speaker makes some good points about the time cycle of US elections. The moderator, however, speaks from the point of view that Western governments owe political allegiance to the betterment of all mankind at whatever cost to their own citizens even though their political viability arises from the service and commitment if those citizens. That notion is patently inconsistent with the premise of sovereign governments existing for the benefit of their own people.
@cyphi1 I think it's a lot more complex than saying the 3rd world doing things at a cheaper price, is counter productive to our economy. What should be looked into is the corruption and revolving doors of Congress that allows monopolies in certain industries than allowing those companies to compete. (American car industry, railroad industry, copyright industry...) Huge lobbying efforts go into those monopolies, making us worse off for the benefits of that cheaper labor.
Was this interviewer listening to what this woman is saying? Was he on mars when she was speaking? She makes a case for becoming more protective to maintain a stronger economy, educate our population, and many other ideas. He comes back with a statement like "those in the west aren't necessarily smarter" and other what I deem, non-sequitors. I didn't read the book and only heard her speech, so perhaps ideas in the book are something he's addressing.

However to assume that everyone in the west is living a life of luxury is to watch too much television. Many, including members of my family, are really struggling. I live Argentina and many here, not just the rich, live better than people I know in the US. To lump everyone in the US or the west together and judge them according to stereotypes is the standard from of prejudice.
Europe as well, is that by and large quality education is reserved fo the rich. Geniuses from poverty stricken ghettos with full scholarships to Harvard are exceptions that make the rule. The real question is how can we democratize quality education and reduce the ever increasing university tuitions? You can't put the blame of overconsumption on the people of the west. People in western societies, especially in the United States, have been conditioned to consume. Corporations have their hands in nearly every aspect of life from the media to politics. We can't escape advertising and all of their advertising is telling us to do is to buy their product. We should be figuring out how to develop a system that allows us to live sustainably.
