    Dambisa you represent Africa so well and you are a spine doctor. Knowledge is power no wonder you are among the top powerful people in the world using your knowledge so well at a global stage. Where are the other African professors and Doctors from the Harvard's and Oxford universities of this world?

    The only question that is in my mind is "Why is Europe so adamant to continue sending aid to countries who clearly have said they do not want it?"

    • @thon993
      @thon993 10 років тому +6

      1.because they want to maintain poverty.
      2.because they do not want other countries to have the same lifestyle as we do.(limited resources)
      3.because they are greedy.
      think about it, if every individual in the world live like you and I do,there wont be enough for everyone, we would need at least four planets. However, if we change the way we live and adopt new lifestyles that do not require large consumption of resources, we would be able to pull it off. Unfortunately since we live in a capitalistic world based on individualism we will never make it. In order for the wealthy to get richER, there needs to be poverty, inequality and abuse, on a large scale.
      welcome to the world

      1) Because "they" (who exactly?) have not 'clearly' said they do not want it. In fact, many African leaders are very vocal about getting MORE aid. For example to paraphrase Dambisa mentioning presidents 'skulking around G8 meetings asking for handouts'.
      2) Its a Politically Correct issue, and as such has been endowed with untouchable 'Holy Cow' status. Even someone who is correct, qualified, and has a legitimate criticism (such as Dambisa) will be strung up for speaking out instead of toeing the party line. For example, its the same thing that happens to critics of feminism, like Karen Straughan.

      And to add, there is no evil anterior motive behind giving aid. Most people really are trying to help. The closest to 'evil' is the point #2 I mention above: It's preached from various sectors such as university departments, people get their ego wrapped up in it and their little superiority feelings take precedent over actualy really helping people and the truth. It gets momentum like this, and becomes and industry wrapped in false pride. Its just f---ed up.

      KeyLimeLemon4U by saying "they", i was referring to the western countries(Europe, North America, Australia...) These countries used to be, and are still are powers that have colonized african countries. If you had control over a state, would you want it to be self-sufficient?
      Also, by sating that there is no anterior motive behind aid, please keep in mind that there are different ways in helping underdeveloped countries. I am not demonizing humanitarian aid.

      Europe has tried everything, except leaving Africa alone. A wound will not heal if it keeps getting picked at. Africa does not need aid. It has feathered the nest of the West, Middle East, and now China wants her share of Africa. Africa is beyond rich and needs noone. And there are many intelligent people in Africa who can sort Africa's problems out.

    A refreshing new approach. The way forward is is to learn financial stability through trade, rather than the proverbial "throwing money at them" approach.

    I can feel the heat in the MP's body. He is part of the culture that support the corrupt regimes in Africa. Cut of the aid pipeline and let Africans devise their own plan to solve their problems.
    I am an African and I don't see how aid has helped me or my country. Can the MP explain why aid continues to flow to Africa and yet poverty is getting worse. Aid is part of the problem not solution. Like she said aid makes African leaders to take the back seat not making any effort on their own.

  • @canadian97
    @canadian97 15 років тому +1

    Her argument couldn't be more logical. If you want Africa to be stronger then you should support Africa in becoming independent and self reliant. That doesn't mean all the other nations of the world should close their doors to Africa, but they should try to close the door to the aid that makes Africa TOTALLY dependent of the rest of the world. I support the effort of Dambisa Moyo in trying to educate the world in the kinds of aid that hurts Africa.

    I don't understand why she says these countries have not improved all these years. According to UN data, most of African countries have improved income and life expectancy in a significant way, if it wasn't for civil wars and AIDS, they'd be a lot better.
    But I agree with her criticism of Bono-like foreign aid. Why haven't I ever heard Bono saying words like "microfinance" or "venture capital"?

  • @Theocrooks

    I'd need to really see how much of the decline in Africa is due to funding and how much is to other factors. Nobody mentioned what the declines majors factors were. She just mentioned that America has been giving aid for awhile and Africa has been in job decline for awhile. she didn't state if there was a definitive connection. No I'm not a key mugabe supporter. Also, what happens if America doesn't give any aid and no money at all gets trickled down to the African people?

    Botswana and Namibia are powerful countries. Look at our progress without that nonce's corruption from landlocked countries like Malawi and Zambia. Corruption is everywhere in the world, besides Lusaka`s economy is doing great with no Aid assistants involve while Mandona sent tourist to visit Blantyre.

    ok let me get this right according to raymond, what he is saying is yes i know that the aid money is destroying your continent and making it worse and i agree with you, but im not going to stop sending it and i dont plan to create an end date for aid. Thats what he just said right. And if u reply to this please give me your reason why he didnt just say what i just said.

    She neglects to talk about the the issue cancelling of third world debt; which would greatly alleviate the financial pressure on African countries. African citizens need to be able to control their own resources and infrastructure, and this is something that will never happen given the rampant 'investment' by foreign companies who transfers profits away from the communties where which they have been earned.

  • @morebucks23
    @morebucks23 15 років тому

    Moyo is deluded when she says Africa shouldn't be a junior partner, African countires will only become self sustaining when they can protect and subsidise their own markets and are able to limit the amount of foreign imports.

    Much as I may Agree with some of your points ...You Should Stop Comparing Africa to Norway...Your statement "Africa should be like Norway" is rather be-littling Africa.
    Africa is a proud Continent and we need to beleive in ourselves that we can make it regardless of any odds.
    The wealth of Africa should not just be compared to a country like Norway..Style up in your activism

    This will not happen because of the neo liberal policies adopted by the WTO; fervently supported by the U.S and U.K governements. These issues tackled otherwise what Moyo states about aid is irrelevant. Moreover, the amount of interest accrued on the loans to some African nations from the world bank, in many instances greatly outweigh the money given in aid. It's completley right to say that aid can't fix this problem, but aid cannot be offered as a cause of these issues.

  • @mainoku2016

    I don't really think the problem is AID, the problem is bad governance. I would do so well with an extra thousand $$ a month coz I am good at planning my finances. If there were great leaders who could encourage entrepreurship, and still try to provide public goods for their people, AID would be a plus. She doesn't know it, but all she is saying is there is bad governance, and the aid that is going to many African nations is not being utilized well, but with great leaders aid is a plus. I also think she forgets that the African population in the 70s is different from what we have now. There was AIDS as well. With or without AID if there is bad governance people will continue to suffer.

    • @hannah60000
      @hannah60000 10 років тому +4

      Nope it is aid, aid is just a bribe by foreign governments to further exploit the continent!
      Give a man a fish they will eat for a day. Teach a man how to fish he will eat for life!
      Europeans do not care about Africans they want to abuse and use us!

    • @mainoku2016
      @mainoku2016 10 років тому +1

      hannah60000 but I still think if you are an educated somebody who thinks and makes use of opportunities, if you are given a million bucks you are not going to sit there and think you are rich, but you are gonna do something great for yourself and change the face of your life and the lives of those who come before you. If our governments where full of thinkers and those who utilize resources to the fullest, they would still do those things they are expected to do by their people. It's all in the state of mind. When a thinker is given fish, she doesn't stay complacent and she can still learn how to fish. Yes, ordinary people when given fish forget about tomorrow, but visionaries know tomorrow I might not have fish so they learn how to fish. Aid isn't an issue. We need visionaries and thinkers for leaders. If African leaders can embezzle that aid now and are not even moved by suffering people in their societies, what makes you think if there is no aid they will provide services for their people? There are so many pple suffering under the aid system and more will suffer if it's removed coz it's very clear that many of the leaders do not even care.

      The factor that you are missing is that those AID comes with conditions that is only in favor of the AID givers. It simply a token to the government so that western companies will control the country's resources. Please do not be naive and think is free, is not.
