New Barn Raising Shirt Mentioned (many times) in video: farmfocused.com/barn-raising-2024-pocket-tee/
I appreciate your channel. Super entertaining, and ultra inspiring.
@@davebecker5236 appreciate you
Good barn for a rain water collection spot
@@Sean-i4r - Nathan - have you considered emplacing a French drain to move the water away from the barn area?
I love your channel. It’s so satisfying for a 71 year old man that can’t do a lot of what you do anymore.
I appreciate that!
I can relate at 75.
I was born in a old house with a tin roof. My bedroom was on the top floor. When it rained, it would put me to sleep in no time. Loved it.
I know what you mean, my bedroom as a child on the farm was originally a porch and it had tin roof, best sleep I have ever had in my life, remember it well just like the smell of fresh cut hay.
Just when I was going to compliment you on your excavator skills I noticed he didn't have a beard! He really did a great job of giving you a nice, smooth drainage system for that side of your barn!!
Your audio in this video was absolutely fine. No need for you to worry about it. Cheers from New Zealand
Wait, those guys put a 70' gutter in a 14 foot trailer? That's amazing. Whoever came up with that portable gutter factory is a genius.
Yeah we run seamless gutters we can run up to 125 foot. After that long the machine can form the gutters and push 125 foot of it
Greetings from England. You have 3 tractors which is 3 more than me and probably 3 more than the people who say you are doing wrong. You are putting food on the table so life is not bad.
Greetings from Texas USA, what tractors do you have over across the pond, I know several USA Brands are build in England I think Massey Ferguson is the biggest, not sure about JDeere
2:45 I used to help my grandpa on the family farm before he passed. And when we did something that could have been done better, but was still good enough to work, he would say, "good enough for the girls we go with." I really enjoy seeing how you do things, and sometimes you give me a different way of looking at things. As long as it works and the people involved are satisfied, I don't think that is the "wrong way". Keep up the good work, sir.
Our saying was Good enough for the girls I dance with
Close enough for government work.
my Grandad always said "that'l work till it don't"😃
Your farm, your way Nathan. We’re just along for the ride and enjoying it.
AGREED 100%, anyone that complains or tells him he is doing it wrong, needs to also share the link of there own UA-cam page so we can see just how its spose to be done the way they think so...
This is a great space - an open air Mancave 👌👌👌
I certainly agree on the sound if rain on a tin roof. Puts me too sleep quicker than anything.
Your getting faster, smoother, and more confident with the excavator
You could use asphalt millings for the floor once graded and vibratory compacted will harden into a quite serviceable surface over time (can be used right away) or better spray thin coat of oil on finished surface of compacted millings using taroil/diesel and spread sand lightly for overcoat so you can use immediately for a hard useable no cracking surface that can be easily be changed or resurfaced as needed. Surface/floor will last for many years at a fraction the cost of of placing forming buying reinforcing and finishing concrete. It's also a DIY friendly task that most can accomplish w/o hiring an outside contractor. Other than the compactor/roller you already have all the equipment you need. Good Luck! Ray
That's a darned good suggestion. Here in the UK we call them scalpings. I've used them to make roadways for 40 ton trucks on my farm so it's hardy stuff and cheap too.
You might look into a rain barrel collection system for the pole barn, that way you will have water that could be used for the garden, chickens or whatever that needs water.
Nathan your buddy knows what he's doing.
Thank you, for showing with the rain at the end, was very helpful for me to visualise how it would affect the area.
T-shirts arrived and I was pleased with the quality of them
Cheers
Your "hired " man is a pretty good operator 😊
I always like watching beforehand. Thanks.
Thanks for watching!
So do I no commercials. I’m getting notifications in my email on the early release but not on the Patreon app
@@texasjetman I’ll let them know about that
The pole shed is coming along. Looking good
Progress is your most important goal. Good work. Good show.
Yes! Thank you!
A pleasure to watch, Nathan, and the rain was a real treat!!
From an old lady from Pittsburgh ⛈️ AND the meat looks delicious!!
I tried to smoke a turkey once. I never could get it lit.😁 Love y'all!
I showed my daughter (she's about your age) my new barn-raising pocket T-shirt and she'd never seen such a thing before, didn't even know it was a possibility. I remember wearing pocket T's when I was a kid but then here in Oregon they have seemed to disappear. I got a chuckle out of her reaction and thought I'd pass it on.
Good for you to see your grade work as you get the first rain because that will tell you exactly where the high points and low points are and where the water wants to go
Seamless gutters, smart move!!
All I can say is they look dang good
Sometimes, you just got to love how much people care about what they care about. Then smile and do what makes you happy. Much easier to say than do, and I'm not running a YT channel.
Looking good. Rain on metal roof is so soothing.
hi there really coming along nice . best to all john
Nathan , I operated heavy equipment for 12 years and your doing just fine , it just takes repetition and before long you’ll be able to put a comb on that mini excavator bucket and comb Mama cats fur ! 😂. Meanest cat on UA-cam !
Another great vid Mr. Elliot! Editing, tunes excellent! Richard is a surgeon with equipment, good neighbor. Rain on barn roof with thunder- perfect! Keep rockin it kid!
My wife commented about the sound of the rain on the metal roof about one minute before you did. She wasn't even watching, just listening in from across the room. Pole barn is really starting to come together. I'm looking forward to seeing you get back to making some sawdust in there!
thank you for watching, appreciate your support
My dad was a gunners mate in WWII. Due to the gunfire he lost his low frequency hearing. 40 years later when he got his first set of hearing aids, he was able to hear the sound of rain. For me, living in Arizona, will go out to listen to the rain on the tin carport roof. A real treat!
My ex-wife had become deaf due to growths in both ears that encased the inner bones and ear drums, after surgery on her first ear I came home from work and she was crying like a baby, I asked what’s wrong she looked up at me and said she could hear the rain falling off the roof , first time in 2 decades
I keep forgetting to ask how Bruno’s doing I love his clocks that boy got some talent talent about picking out things that are nice. Hope you guys have a nice day and keep the videos coming.
Disregard the negative naybobs! You have a great channel, and I enjoy your personality immensely!
I'm a career carpenter. Back when I did residential work we did gutters once in a while. I hated doing them. We didn't do them in one piece so it was pieceing sections together . When we use spike and ferrules it always seemed like the hardest wood in the house was the fascia boards.
Nathan I do love the sound of rain on your metal roof. All that grading and working on that slope has paid off. I don’t believe you’ll have any problems with it. Cool video. 👍❤️
The operator is doing a good job on the swale. I found that keeping the slope at about o e inch per ten feet drains good but doesn't run fast enough to cause erosion. I forgot the name but you can get rolls of grass that stabilize the ground fast. Have fun and stay safe!
You get things done. No complaints here.
Nice job with the wide bucket. Looks like you’ve got it in great shape. So jealous, lol
Thanks 👍
It does not matter what people think how you do things along you’re having fun that’s what. Worth doing keep up the good work love the videos..
I appreciate that!
Sounds to me like there is going to be a barn dance for the neighborhood in the future 😂
Tell Bruno I said hello and keep doing what you’re doing Nathan.😊
It all looks great. You could add some cement to the dirt and get a roller to pack and stabilize the dirt in the shed. I have all my gutters going into light duty 4-inch pvc pipe. it all goes to the lowest part of my yard. You could do that and let it come above ground and go over, or just take it all the way to the creek. you could also put some perf. pipe at the swale along your shed to let water perk down in and go to the creek. It all takes a bit. Regards. Doc!
Looking good around there
The 12'x14' is a great idea and will save a lot of steps. The pole barn will be a blessing in many ways. Great to work under shade and gives you more options during rain storms. You could even do blacksmithing in a corner of the pole barn. Nice sounding rain on the roof. Your placing of the sawmill seems perfectly logical and as you continue sawing will verify its location.
Oh. So happy, hello I always watching and supporting you, waiting for new videos from you ❤😊
Thanks for the video! Love your content. Every time I come downstairs to watch UA-cam, my kids jokingly say, “Welcome to the sawmill friends.”
Glad to See the Time you are Investing, is In Yourself.😎👍✅
You ain't doing anything wrong! You are just doing it your way! Those negative Nancy's need to have a little couth and respect! God bless!🙏🙏☕☕
No pitcher ever started out throwing 90 mph fastballs. Learning takes time and effort. It's also fun, for the most part.
It is fun. And very satisfying when you make or do something you’ve never done before. And you learn a bunch for next time.
its called a swale -i did that back in 1973 for a mobile home park with much heavier machines - brings back memories my swales were somewhat deeper
Nice video. Great job on the project and made a lot of progress ! 🪵🚧👍🛠️
... long as you got your 'que inside! That was fun to watch all of that naked eye grading. Well done!
I love your channel and enjoy watching you grow your future.
Bruno's gonna have a great starting point. God bless y'all! 😃
You brought in a ringer! The shop is shaping up real nice.
I bought one of your shirts and I love it. Great shirt!!
You just got the drain done in time and nothing like rain on a tin roof very relaxing
Nathan, my mouth was watering when you opened that smoker! I gotta get me one-o-those. Great vid!
That barn will be fun to have.
The man working the dirt was awesome.
yes he is the best ive seen
Nathan, looking very nice 👍 under the pole barn 😮😊❤
Hi Nathan & it's is Randy and i like yours video is Cool & Thanks Nathan & Friends & Randy
Thanks for sharing with us Nathan, really looks good. The friend is quite the operator on the skid steer/ excavator. The sound on the roof was great too. Stay safe and enjoy yourself once you get all in operation down there. The BBQ looked awesome also. Fred.
Great progress on the Barn Nathan, much of it just in time for the rain. Amazing to watch them make those super long gutters on site. What a genius machine. The water now seems to be behaving itself & drain as you wanted. A lot of work done so far but a lot still left to do. Heck, concrete work is expensive for you over there but it is almost as bad here in South Australia. I look forward to future progress & seeing the mill in back in action. Cheers, Don from South Australia.
Good tip. Using the bottom of the bucket to make a smooth spoon drain. Haven't tried that one...
I do know about using the blade - if you want to move dirt push it, if you want to smooth dirt pull it.
Cheers from Down Under.
Good stuff
It's really looking good Nathan.
thanks Gary
Man Nathan I was about to give you a big compliment about the technique with the Excavator then realized you were not in the operator seat! . I think that guy could tickle a kitten with that bucket and barely wake it up! The shed is looking good! I recently bought a nice 16 pound Boston Butt and will smoke it this weekend. I don't have a smoker so I use my Weber with setup I learned on UA-cam where all the expects are and it works great.
Nathan, your very nice drainage channel is called a “swale.”
Thanks!
Looks like a drainage ditch to me. Swale is a nice word though. I need to look it up and use it sometime.
@@miloh7871 Ditches are deeper in my book, but the swale-ditch is doing its job!
Great job Nathan cheers
I was getting ready to compliment you on how well you have progressed on your operating when I saw it wasn’t you. He doing a great job.
Busy as a beaver 🦫 making things happen. Absolutely can’t beat rain in a metal roof. You keep plugging away at it and you will get it done. Love my hickory on my smoker too !
You got that right!
As far as I am concerned, the only thing you do wrong, is listen to and or care about comments which say you do wrong. Ignore them comments, you are doing great. Live and learn, you would have benefitted by doing this kind of earthwork, grading before they came and constructed the pole barn, just saying 😍
Nathan , I come to your channel to relax , be amazed , entertained and above all educated , I cannot imagine a scenario where I give myself permission to come on here and criticise a hard working and likeable man who’s just going about his day and sharing the ups and downs he has .
If you were an accredited expert in all aspects of farm and wood mill life then your vids would be tutorials and tbh I wouldn’t be that interested .
So to all the smart arses who just cannot contain themselves from criticising you .. chill , relax , just enjoy the ride and the scenery 🤷♂️
👍🏴
Thx
Nathan, Looks great! The barn is shaping up quick, However, you may need more downspouts on the gutters. That is a lot of roof for 4 downspouts but time will tell. Thanks so much for the videos.
You may have already thought of this but I suggest that you put some larger stone or concrete diverter block at the base of each down spout so the water coming out of them does not dig a hole where it comes out of the spout.
Everybody makes it up as they go along. It's all a learning experience, and thus takes time and effort. Bonus: It's fun! (for the most part) When the eagle flies, this ol' Georgia boy will lay out a little long green with a short future for a pocket tee. Say hey to your lovely bride and your nifty son.
Nice to see your buddy Richard giving the Kato Ex a good workout. Looks GREAT !! That meat looks Goooood 😀😀😋😋
Looking really nice Nathan. Thanks for sharing.
Couple suggestions,
First, put pipe bollards in front of any posts you'll be passing through while carrying lumber.
Second, don't be driving through your drainage swale at the far end of the barn. It will cause you drainage issues pretty quickly.
That's thing to be nice when you get it all set up!
About that cold, I get summer colds about every year 😂
Live in SW Wisconsin and around hay hay fields are planted in alfalfa and we will get 4 cutting and if it goes perfectly they sometimes get 5! Need that really good hay for dairy herds.
Quality was excellent!
Log cabin, aka The Clock House.
See there, the weatherman was right, no rain.
Well, at least I didn't get any rain. Of course, I'm
in St Louis, but Hey, no rain. 🤣🤣🤣 😁✌🖖
Nathan, awesome work, always awesome content/videos, you get better with everything you do! I'm no excavating contractor or equipment operator, but your work is exceptional to a layman like me. If the drainage swale you created turns out to be inadequate for the water volume, you might try a curtain drain. I foolishly hand dug one once. Your excavator would have been much more effective. (Dig a ditch starting at about 12" below grade at the highest elevation of the swale. Make the ditch wide enough to accept a 6" or 8" Schedule 40 PVC perforated pipe. Line the ditch with a couple layers of geotextile filter fabric. Leave enough fabric out of the ditch to fold over the ditch later. Bed the pipe - perforations down - in 1"-2" gravel until covered and fill the ditch to about 2"-3" below grade. You'll be gradually and gently pitching the ditch toward 'daylight' at the low-end of the ditch/swale. Fold the fabric over the coarse gravel and finish stoning with finer gravel to grade (maybe slightly proud of grade.). No dirt on finish gravel. This will drain amazing volumes of water for decades. Your excavator is key. Keep up the great work!!! I try to never miss!
I was watching this video thinking, "Nathan sure has improved his excavator skills!", and then I noticed it wasn't you. 😅
For a second, I thought you had cloned yourself! I figure it’ll be a few years before Bruno gets trained up that good…glad to see he got a start with driving. The pole barn is gonna be great, you might even have room for a Barn Dance down there!
I could almost smell the hickory smoke, and the aroma of pork shoulder getting tender. From one barbecue guy to another, you should try portioning out your leftover shoulder meat, and immediately freezing it. Then take a package out of the freezer, put it in a 250° oven in a corning dish for about two hours. It will come out almost as good as it was right off the smoker. I do it all the time - cooking more than we're going to eat, and then freezing the leftovers. I was surprised that it even works well for leftover ribs.
LOL don't worry about people telling you do it wrong. I worked as a mechanic and a fabricator/ welder for years. Every one that walked by said there way was better. Know what maybee but mine always worker quite well.
Tractor supply has some of the best weed and grass killer I ever tried. It takes about 3-5 days to work but works well.
Looking good. When you get your crushed limestone, don’t use #57. Use #610. 610 has fines that allows it to compact like concrete. 57 is screened the same size and stays loose.
Here in SE Kansas, the phone app been saying no rain for the next 10 days. Well , we got 1.85 inches of rain starting at 1am this morning and .20 inches of rain 2 days ago.
Lookn good ty
Keep up the hard work 💪
Thanks, you too!
I'm so sorry to have to say, the truth is there's not always tomorrow. That why we each need to live the best we can, and do as much as we can today.
I like rain on a metal roof too!
Nathan, it's really looking good at the pole barn these days. Have you considered mixing sand & cement powder to put in a compacted path on the side of the sawmill where the sawdust will be discharging? It is a common construction technique to give a really stable surface if you aren't going to have a lot of heavy traffic and would give you a chance to create a pad that is easier to capture the sawdust, blow the area clean, and not have to worry about a muddy area if a hard rain blows in. A 3' wide path the length of the machine would be more than enough to keep that area cleaner and make it easier to remove the sawdust.
Pecan is my go to wood for smoking any kind of pork and poultry. Give it a try if you have some.
Looking good from North Carolina.
I have never said your doing something wrong, its yours to do as you please, wish i had it.
I only tell you what i have done.
The meat looks great.
😅 what times dinner? Ill bring some beans! Be just like Blazing saddles.
