Cow manure is the best for your hay fields. I was raised on a dairy farm, and spread alot of manure in my day. Trust me it also builds soil level deeper after some years.
Nathan- If you run a plate compactor over that rock, all you're going to do is make it bounce up and down. You need to bind it together. You need to mix some FINES in with it to hold it together. Either mix it with some stone dust which will eventually harden up pretty good or some processed gravel which will help bind it together. Gotta have something that will PACK if you don't want it to move.
Well done Nathan, don’t worry I’ve worked around heavy machinery for years, and as far as I’m concerned you’re coming along just fine. Remember you’re jumping on and off different machines all the time, so it’s not as if you’re spending all day every day on the same one, also i agree that landscaping in and around the new shed is a great idea. There’s only one person you need to make happy and that’s you. I like your longer videos too, it’s nice to watch you doing different projects on your farm. 👍🏼
A plate compactor would only bounce on top that rock. 57s won't compact and stay compacted because there's nothing to bind them together. Crusher run, abc, road base, or whatever people want to call it would be what you'd want if you want to compact the rock to keep it in place. I wish I lived closer to you so I could come by and help you out on the grading work you're doing around the new building. If I had gas money I'd make the trip. I'm just about 40 miles north of Charlotte NC. I did residental and commercial grading work for 19 years and would gladly help you out. If you had all the materials we could have got all the grading and gravel done in two days including burying the pipe for the downspouts. What you've got done looks good though and should work fine. 👍
The people who claim you're trying to sell them something, tell them there are a lot of us out there who want to hear about it. One of the main reasons I enjoy watching UA-cam is to hear product reviews. I'm glad you're one who gives them. By the way, I really loved the music you added @31:30 (my kind of music).
Great job Nathan, things ended well today for you all. What a day!!! Thanks for taking us along with you, it was a fun ride. Stay safe and we will catch you on the next video. Fred.
Hi Nathan, you are doing a great job. Really enjoy your videos. A wee tip from a retired roads engineer. If you tuck the uphill section of the fabric for the swale drain into the soil and bury it, surface water will go over the fabric rather than under it and will exit the area a lot faster. Ian from Aotearoa (New Zealand).
Every county as an Agricultural Extension Agent freely giving information from each state's land grant university. They recommend agricultural practices, help diagnose problems with weeds, insects, and diseases. They also work with 4-H and home economics members. Nice to have a productive garden. Who doesn't love fresh green beans and tomatoes. The Pole Barn project is making great progress and will be interesting watching you utilize and outgrow the space during the next year.
Looks Great Nathan keep up the good work and start making shavings.😊 The new pole barn is Really coming along and is turning out to be # 1 for growing business 😉
I like to use 11s for a base, it's small about 1/2" and it has the crushed stone fines mixed in. It spreads and compacts well. And Mr. Kato will do a pretty good job of tracking the rock in.
Nathan I just had to say how much I enjoy your videos there always super interesting and in formative. With reference to how you want your barn to look my old dad used to say"if a jobs worth doing it's worth doing well" so keep up the good work and I look forward to more of them video's 😊
Nathan while you may not of gotten everything done you want to you and the neighbor did solve all but one of the problems of the world...finally someone stepped up to the plate to address those issues. Your polebarn project is coming together nicely enjoy watching the progress.
Nathan, your Pole Barn is developing into an attractive addition to the homestead. Looks very pleasing to your eyes. Get Momma's input on locating small circular flower beds, one each of the three corners of the building facing the road, with a couple/three rose bushes and lower blooming flowers around them. I think that will help with the esthetics of the Barn. These beds will also be a focal point to keep visitors' eyes attracted to the overall beauty of your Barn and not just the enormous size.
Glad you got some rain. Yes sir get that soil tested at least every other year. It’s money well spent. Save your burn pile ash also for fertilizer. Once I’m out of the Red Tacky I will buy a tube of Schaeffer’s for my backhoe & give it a try, they have several different numbers & prices on Schaeffer’s
My neibor and i built a square tube to fit over his pallet forks. Welded 2 square tubs togeather an welded a half inch flat ireon to that to hook a chain to keep the irons from slideing off and the welded a ball out toward the end to pick up trailers.. works great and total cost was less than 100 dollors.
A water filled round roller that you pull behind a tractor to compact the rock. Great video, it is always something different, and always an interesting experience for all of us.Thanks!
Keep up the driving lessons with Burno on the Tracker. Once he gets good at driving, teach him to use the small tractor with the belly mower then let him loose.
The barn is really coming along Nathan. That’s awesome. I do believe you can get a plate tamper attachment for your mini ex. But a handheld one would do the job. Just hard on the body for such a large area Looking forward to the next video
For Shou Sugi Ban you are supposed to coat the wood with Linseed oil afterwards. Good to see you're using that grease with 5% Moly. It's the best - especially for the excavator pins.
Hey Nathan, a BIG thank you to you and your neighbor for solving the world's problems. Hopefully, we can now watch the price of gravel go down along with all the other thousands of things gone up in price. You got me interested in the Receiver plate. I can use one with my sub-compact tractor. I assume it fits a quick hitch attachment for the bucket.
One of the other video channels bought a Harbor Freight compactor a year or so ago and used it a lot and liked it. I haven't watched that channel in a while to be able to say how it is still working. Good days work. I'm glad you got so many of the worlds problems fixed. Take care and be sure to have a little fun every day, jack
Hey Nathan, Love your vids and your passion for the land. I would suggest to use a General-All-Passing product (that has fines) to level up inside the barn. That hardfill can be compacted. The stone you used makes a good dressing or wearing layer but won’t compact. The swale could be lined with big rock like you suggested but not the small stone. You hang in there buddy!
Nathan. Now that you have more space, you need to make up some 8 ft pallets. It seems in the old building you would pull back lumber and place it on the table. When this built up you put it on floor. Then handled again on to fork blades then restacked on to stickers. With purpose made pallets you are only handling it once. Leave to dry then same pallet into kiln.
You are making good progress Nathan, a couple of observations, I'm glad you finally have a proper hillbilly headdress and those fresh beans will make some larrapin shuck beans for this winter.
Actually, I'm glad that you do let us know what you're using and how you use it. Because of that I have bought and used a great variety of tools thanks to you. So, keep it up.
greetings from oregon.. blessed you are. 🙏🙏🙏 back in the day this would all be manual labor. .kudos to modern tech... you can present this content, and i can live vicariously. .thank you lord nathan
Good progress Nathan. Things look to be coming along fine with the barn. It was good that you were able to get such a fast delivery of the 'rock'. It's just a matter of time now. Looks like you had a pretty good 'drop' of rain, perhaps many drops of rain. Thanks for the update on the barn, cheers, Don from South Australia.
Them Beans look wonderful, Yeah you gonna need more rock, I estimate 30 tons to get good coverage, I used to get slurry from local concrete business its hard to spread but if its stirred up good (to dry) it works great pack it in with track loader sprinkle it some pack some more and it will set up pretty hard. I got it for free just paid for dump truck fee around 200 dollars for about 40 tons. Just a thought
Nathan,as always you do a lot of great work around your land and I know that you take pride in what you’re doing or building keep up the great job 👍😮😊❤
I wouldn't be concerned about the color of that come-along attachment. It looks just fine on Mr. Kato, in my opinion. Besides, you got a bunch of other things to do instead of painting it only to have to repaint it some time down the road. Be well.
If you use DGA stone and run a compactor over it repeatedly, it packs down like concrete. It's pretty much 57's prior to washing. Makes an excellent base and doesn't roll around.
Put ya clover seeds in your hay fields it helps with soil compaction and give nitrogen to the soil farmers use it as a cover crop then till it in. Its also good in the lawn. And cows can eat it. So you'll have good hay to sell.
Nathan, your new equipment building is really looking sharp. I'm looking forward to when you put the finishing touches on it. And if you and your neighbor got all of the worlds troubles figured out, we'll I have a few extra that you might be able to help with. 😂 God bless you, brother.
After hearing you say that #57 gravel cost in your area ($30 per ton + delivery) I think I need to stockpile A BUNCH OF #57 at $20 per ton delivered!!! Tim in northern TN
Nathan, I hear you about ladders. I spent 35 years working off ladders. When they handed out Covid cash I bought some scaffold for working around the house with my checks. For your ceiling you could get away with 2 sections with wheels. For what it costs to rent a lift you could buy the scaffold. Then you work at your leisure. I have roofing and tree trimming projects to do. I was going to rent a bucket lift.
Glad to hear you mention renting a lift to do the lights and upper electrical. SO much safer and you will safe enough time to pay for the rental. I am no longer a fan of ladders anymore myself.

I'd run water to the new building incase of a f word, you could put it out if it's a small f word

Base material like 21A or crushed run
Agreed. The 10 ton load appears to have some fines in it, but I don't think enough to compact to the point it's stable.
Nathan, you're getting pretty good on Mr Kato!
Why not get a full bucket full. Seems like it would go faster.
It is fine for a barn to look nice😀
A lot of people would say you were very blessed with the land in the tractors and the equipment but that bucket full of food is a true blessing
Yes

As a machinist who's repaired many pieces of farm equipment due to lack of lubrication...I can assure you any grease is better than no grease !
That was the most southern business call I've heard in a long time, Nathan. :D
I couldn't help but remember the good old days sitting on the back porch snapping beans with my Grandmother.
Having a trailer hitch in front of you makes it a lot easier to position the trailer. I put a hitch on the front of my F-350 years ago.
