A thin sheet of paper stops alpha particles, that's why the detector didn't show any extra particles. Plexiglass will stop beta particles and the K40 in bananas is a beta emitter. It's mostly gamma rays you see. If you want to be sure if it's alpha, beta, or gamma place the chamber in a magnetic field. Alpha and beta particles will be bend into circular paths while gamma rays stays unaffected.
@@JJayzX Say someone gives you 4 cookies. An alpha cookie, a beta cookie, a gamma cookie and a neutron cookie. You have to eat one, throw one away, hold one in your hand, and put one in your pocket. The beta goes in your pocket if you know cloth will block betas.
I think what's important is that the radiation can ionize the alcohol molecules, so even if photons aren't the nucleation points themselves, they can cause ionization, thus you can detect gamma rays.
if you want to make them yourself, just put a sticky paste on a flat sheet of some sort, then stick another sheet onto it, and pull it off again, that's how you get those shapes.
Hey ! To everyone trying to replicate this setup, i found something interesting, it seems that you can go wayyy under 2-3° with some fan and heatsink. I found out that the major problem is the thermal coumpound you apply. With standard electronic one (the white one, 1W/(m.K)) you can't go under 2-3°C. Out of curiosity, i tested a good one (for computer CPU, 8.5W/(m.K)) and... -13°C. Same heatsink, same fan. It seems that a "bad" coumpound is not enough to draw the heat from the module to the heatsink, and you thermal balance in the module is at a way higher temperature.
Wouldn’t cooled water with salt also work better then ice? Ice will simply melt around the heatsink, locally raising temperature quicker. *edit: didn’t watch end of video yet, expected better results with salt

So putting the bananas behind that plexiglass is probably the reason it didn't work at all. Try putting them inside, It should work better, same with the smoke detector, which, btw, could be an optical detector with no radiation since they kinda "banned" ionizing ones
Better pro tip 😉 … The radioisotope in bananas is Potassium 40 which decays (mostly) via beta particle emission. NO alpha particle emission. These particular beta particles have more than enough energy to get through that plexiglass. But, given the half life of K-40 (over a billion years) and it’s puny specific activity, you’d have to leave one there for a while to spot any ionisation. They just get missed in all the other natural radioactive stuff 👍🏻 Yeah. I’m fun at parties.
@@cyclingbob1 nah, you're probably fun at parties. I'm not the kind of idiot to go around scolding people for correcting wrong data or being nerds, so thanks for the info 😄👍
10:22 To anyone trying to replicate this (and to @electroboom himself, although I don't think he'll see this by now): alpha particles are blocked easily by basically anything denser than air and without actual radioactive stuff, you are not likely to see any other type of high energy particles comming out of it (maybe you are lucky to have a few radioactive isotopes on your bananas), so you have to place them inside the chamber so those alpha particles are made visible. And with the smoke dectector... Well, some of those do have a tiny piece of radioactive americium inside but a) not all of them use them and b) it will still mostly emit alpha particles so you still need to have it insed the chamber to properly see stuff coming out of it... And probably destroy the sensor to expose the americium block inside anyways haha. I LOVE cloud chambers and i will definitely make my own some dayand @electroboom actually made some great job shoeing how to do it. I syill think dry ice is still easier though... But the alcohol-soaked sponges with resistors is a good idea

Awesome. The problem is that you're blinding yourself with the light. You should shade above those strips and recess them. You want the room to be as dark as possible, with only the thin controlled layer of soft light at the bottom. Also the bottom should be black. This would be a very cool application for some of that Vanta Black material.
Thanks for the innovative video. The plexiglass housing is blocking most of the alpha particles from the 241Am source (smoke detector). It also emits low energy gamma rays though which you see when you put the source outside. You would be able to detect only gamma rays or particles that can penetrate through the case.
Gamma rays can not leave a visible track inside of a cloud chamber as high energy photons do not really interact with matter the way that other particles do even tho they are ionizing radiation. What you are observing is a particle called a muon. Atmospheric muons are produced in earths upper atmosphere as a result of the decay of pions (a charged meson with approximately 270 times the mass of an electron) muons as well as muon neutrinos are both a product of pion decay. Pions tend to decay in about 8.5x10^-17 seconds. Pions are generated in the upper atmosphere when a proton collides with a molecule.
I am no engineer(electrical or mechanical) but I am a HVAC Technician. I thought of a improvement on the design for lower temps. Air over heatsinks are no good air has a low heat capacity. My idea would use a small refrigeration circuit to chill a bath of isopropyl alcohol and have the heatsink submerged in the actively cooled alcohol bath. As the alcohol condenses the sub zero plate will be pitched so it will run off directly in to the bath the heatsink is sitting in. Maybe a mini pump and a float switch to recirculate the alcohol to the top of the device to be evaporated again. For the lighting using a laser that projects a flat wide beam would be perfect for this application because no laser light would hit the metal plate as the beam would be parallel to it.

If something gets in between the source and the detector (like smoke) the alpha particles will stop reaching the detector and the alarm will be tripped. Due to this property of alpha particles the source will need to be placed inside of the box. You can identify paths made by alpha particles fairly easily. They are fat little dots. Don’t eat the source and don’t loose it and don’t touch the little star bit.
The actual fbi agent behind his screen be like : wtf is he talking about
"And now, I solder the two foams in parallel."
7:27 Dear kids! That's why you shouldn't lick icicles in winter after they fall from the roof

I learned more electrical engineering watching "the rectifier" than in my college classes and for that i thank you master!
my FBI agent doesn't even talk to me. I'm sad now.
It's ok, we were just hearing the voices in Mehdi's head.
oh my God! The part where you were cutting towards your finger gave me a small heart attack...

SLAP LIKE NOW
2:49 from the moment I stumbled upon this channel I always expected him to call me a slapper. And then it finally happened. :D
Your reaction to the particles was priceless.

Using a jigsaw like a dingus: I sleep
Cutting MDF inside with no ventilation or mask: I wake
Can you explain why that's an issue?
So, this is educational but also a huge meme
*NICE*
Is that a meme?
OH MY GAWWWWD
I really love the fact that Mehdi’s “My Life of Failures” book also features a failure: he misspelled his channel name 😆 (10:51)
I too only make failures.
there are no failures - Master Accident

I am baffled that you still have fingers after your constructing montage.

epic!(in Davie 504's voice)
That intro almost perfectly encapsulates the humor of this channel. I love these videos because it feels like I'm watching Looney Tunes while being educated.
10:15 "Good! So we can conclude that bananas are safe to eat"
Hey there, fellow Iranian electrical engineer here...dude bro I HAVE/USE THAT SAME DIGIKEY RULER...freakin awesome!!!!
