The USB killer started as a student project. I can't believe it went into production. The purpose appears to be purely malicious - to damage other people's laptops and computers. Can you imagine if you were a student and some prick destroyed your laptop with all your work on it for a joke?
I think the original version was used to test how well host devices would survive having defective devices plugged into them. If your USB stick went bad, it'd be bad for it to be able to destroy your computer as well. I seem to remember seeing a list of devices which survived the USB killer completely, devices which survived but lost the port it was plugged into, and devices that failed entirely.
4:30 the "usb killer" is plugged in and it must've put in so much power into the laptop that it actually managed to power the keyboard LEDs, impressive!
It's also used to remind everyone around you as to how much wealth you have. (Or how much wealth a social circle has. Which is why I think it's so expensive since a dead laptop is the equivalent of a 'slug buggy' to certain economic groups)
@@TheKoenigsParkour Not really... not needed to break things -- AC is just great for destruction, and has the nice property that voltage can be easily adjusted by simple transformers, and capacitors will pass AC current through instead of blocking current flow, increasing the options for destructive capabilities. I had one of those. A USB 3.0 internal cable was damaged in transport but I didn't think it would matter and it worked with the USB 2.0 drives I had at the time, but as soon as I plugged in my new USB 3.0 drive into that port it fried.

9:37 I'm not sure about the damage you described for the Computer. It will travel from the I/O -> USB Controller -> Southbridge now it could take several routes either to the PCI Bus (Graphic card, Sound card etc.) or to the Norhtbridge or like you said to the SATA controlled devices like SSD's. So it will definitely kill the USB Controller and possibly the Southbridge. So I believe the Motherboard will be fried and if you are unlucky also the Graphic card. It would be interesting to test this though, since you can't really predict the path it will take.

"Some of my methods may kill more than your device..." wowww he just never runs out of punchlines. One of the funniest videos I have watched in a while.
Their rational is they want manufacturers to install protection circuits to prevent this but that doesn't make sense to me. This concept would work just as well on serial ports, HDMI, VGA, Thunderbolt etc. More over you can always just build a beefier circuit to overcome any manufacturer's protection circuit.
It does make sense, if you consider the sellers of these devices a kind of mafia. “That's a nice USB port you have there, it would be a shame if something would happen to it. We do happen to be selling special protection circuits…”
@Brett Bates I wouldn't call it "well built" per say. Usually that phrase describes build quality, not protection against random things. ie. certain casio watches are waterproof but looks rather disappointing otherwise. Surely you wouldn't call those "better built" than a rolex that isn't?
Reminds me of an old _Bastard Operator From Hell_ story, I think it went like "The hefty nicad batteries making up the bulk of the 'laptop' poured grunt into a tripling inverter, which in turn sent *_RICH, CHUNKY VOLTS_* to alternating pins of the 'SCSI' port of the host machine"...
Medi is right. Even when I worked in major electronic design, assembly and testing, we had a device called a HI-POT device but it was only specifically designed to work in the mains of the PSU units where there was the ever so slight chance of something like that happening.

Alexander Thomas hey can y’all speak English?

@@totallyrandomuser5760 even I was wondering about that
@Brett Bates I wouldn't call it "well built" per say. Usually that phrase describes build quality, not protection against random things.
ie. certain casio watches are waterproof but looks rather disappointing otherwise. Surely you wouldn't call those "better built" than a rolex that isn't?

Medi is right. Even when I worked in major electronic design, assembly and testing, we had a device called a HI-POT device but it was only specifically designed to work in the mains of the PSU units where there was the ever so slight chance of something like that happening.
